mmmm…pie…
All Michelle can see is that some folks have pie, and others don’t. Never mind all that work that went into baking the thing in the first place. Spread cooking skills, not the end product.
mmm…pie…

Homer Beck   January 13th, 2010 - 7:57 am

Looks like Fat Boy has been dipping into that pie, doesn’t it?

sugabee43   January 13th, 2010 - 8:15 am

I love Fat Boy!!!

roger b.   January 13th, 2010 - 8:24 am

I like Glenn, but this was a really, really, really stupid segment.

Skyhawk   January 13th, 2010 - 8:43 am

Homer Beck – Does the TOS mean anything to you or do you just have a problem with simple reading comprehension?
BTW, that “Fat Boy” is more popular than you will ever be – remember few people look good in jealous green.

Glen Beck is a complete MORON! The top earners pay the most because they have the most. The bottom % pay less because they have less to give. This is the most idiotic argument I’ve ever heard. It is unfair that ANYONE pays more than anyone else. It’s time for a flat tax on EVERYONE and Corporate America… Then there can be no complaint by anyone as everyone would paid the same… But someone needs to put Glenn Beck in a mental institution where he belongs

Kenny   January 13th, 2010 - 9:43 am

MRB: Get over yourself moron. Envy will get you nowhere very fast.

H2K   January 13th, 2010 - 9:53 am

MRB, the top earners pay the most because of our progressive income tax. The bottom 40% don’t pay anything. This isn’t because “…they have the most”. It’s because liberal policies are crafted to keep liberals in power. If the earning power of the population is a bell curve with the richest and poorest at either end of the curve, the tax policy is design so that as many as possible don’t pay taxes, are getting net benefits from the government, and will continue to vote these same politicians in time and time again.

If we outlawed deficit spending, then
a) more people would have to contribute – making more people vested in the success of our society
b) more people would be challenging the government’s policies and insisting on the most minimal of services

Both a&b run counter to big-government’s ultimate goal.

This, in a nutshell, is why we have a tea-party movement.

Looking Forahandout   January 13th, 2010 - 10:15 am

Keep up the good work, Mr. Beck.

Oh, and take el Rushbo with you!   January 13th, 2010 - 10:19 am

Hey Fat Boy, do us all a favor and eat those pies, drink some more booze, and run around the block! Better still, run through the woods. Then we can locate you in a week or so by following the smell.

Simple Simon   January 13th, 2010 - 10:22 am

Beck’s use of the “pie” was a simple illustration used in the theme that Michelle Obama rasied in the first instance. He should have used Pumpkin Pie instead…

He would have been better off illustrating the metaphor on tax cuts below because it shows exactly how the progressive income tax affects each group in US society He could have used the particpants meeting for desert & coffee rather than full meals and it would have accomplished exactly what he was looking to illustrate in the “pie segment”. It would also be much more comical when the punches were thrown…

http://logiclifeline.blogspot.com/2006/07/great-taxation-analogy-and-great.html

How our Tax System works when taxes are reduced: Is it only a tax cut for the rich? Try to understand the real world economics of a tax cut. Suppose that every day, ten men go out for dinner and the bill for all comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this.

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
Ø The fifth would pay $1
Ø The sixth would pay $3.
Ø The seventh would pay $7.
Ø The eighth would pay $12
Ø The ninth would pay $18.
Ø The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So that’s what they decided to do.

The ten men ate dinner in the restaurant everyday and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day the owner threw them a curve. “Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily meal by $20.” Dinner for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes, so the first four men were unaffected. They would still eat for free. But what about the other six men – the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his ‘fair share?’

They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to eat their meal. So, the restaurant owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:
Ø The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
Ø The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% savings).
Ø The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% savings).
Ø The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
Ø The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
Ø The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to eat for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.

“I only got a dollar out of the $20,” declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, “but he got $10!”

“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a dollar too; it’s unfair that he got ten times more than me.”

“That’s true!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get $10 back when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!”

“Wait a minute” yelled the first four men in unison. “We didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!”

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up!

The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for dinner, so the nine sat down and ate without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill. And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore, in fact they might start eating overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier

Homo Beck -
Your just a typical Libtard. Cant dispute his argument, just call him names and move on. You Libs disgust me “hey neighbor gimme some of your stuff, Im to worthless to support myself” …. I’ll bet Homer Beck gets a tax refund and spends it on some new rims …

melli50   January 13th, 2010 - 11:22 am

Are you kidding, roger? This segment is brilliant! Go, Glenn!

Duncan Idaho   January 13th, 2010 - 11:56 am

Glenn beck is being very disingenuous with his pie analogy. Of course the rich pay more money in pure dollar amounts. They’re making massively more than the working class. He has to look at it that way because otherwise people will see that many of those top 10% income earners are not paying as much, percentage-wise, as people making less.

Ostensibly, income tax is progressive but rich people with creative accountants have found ways around a lot of taxes. Just look at Warren Buffett’s quote. He pays less than 20% tax rate while his employees pay over 30%. Also, don’t forget that sales tax is regressive. You can be sure that the top 10% pay significantly less sales tax as a percentage of their total wealth than factory workers.

A progressive tax is supposed to provide an equal burden on everyone. Rich people can pay a higher percent because they have more to give. Glenn Beck sure goes to a lot of work to muddy the waters.

Meli50…

The example of the 1% paying the huge piece was GREAT. It was good showing the next chunk out… It was even OK throwing the guys on it… (would have been nice if he chose a pie that held together so you could clearly see how much it actually was….)
Then he got lost in his numbers.. was it 3 or 10? then the union. stirring it up… Then the éclair and the union and the protected pie…
What the heck was the protected thing… just plain lost me

Remember I’m pretty dense… he just lost me entirely. In the end I was wondering what point he was trying to make.

Guess if I didn’t have a life and could just follow him around, maybe I’d understand his point. I sure didn’t… like I say, I’m sure it is because I’m so stupid… But I thought the pint if ILLUSTRATIONS was to illustrate and illuminate… if left me confused.

Typical commie Democrat Marxism……………………She IS the “enemy from within”.

Say What   January 13th, 2010 - 12:37 pm

Right wingers don’t seem as enthusiastic about Beck since he said of the birthers ” I mean, that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.”
There is a concerted campaign to get those questioning Barack Obama’s constitutional eligibility onto the airwaves – a strategy Beck said would actually benefit Obama.
Don’t see many from the right saying Beck 2012 anymore LOL

He is an addict. Whether it is blow, hooch or pie, he can’t get enough. Is there a word for pie addicts, something like a drunk or stoner?

Duncan Idaho… Sorry, but progressive taxation does not help this (or any) country. Everyone should pay the same percentage of tax (say 8%). Perhaps if everyone did:
1. everyone would be a little more engaged in what is going on politically… taking your money has a way of focusing your attention…
2. everyone would feel as though they were contributing to the success of the country.. they would be
3. it would minimize politicians pitting of groups against each other (the rich feeling they are getting ripped off the poor thinking they are entitled… each fomenting hatred)
4. yeah, it would make it quite a bit harder on the poorer in society, but then the POLITICIANS would have to decide how compassionate it REALLY is to keep taking dollars from the citizenry… when they are going to be taking it from people who can’t afford it.

(It is real easy to spend a rich guy’s money)

Just some food for thought.

rufus   January 14th, 2010 - 2:40 pm

Beck is plenty smart. He has a difficult job trying to dumb down explanations where the average American can understand stuff, and will stay engaged long enough to get the point. Americans are pretty much lazy minded, and prefer to “learn” everything from Kos, HuffPo, Rascal Maddow, Tingle Mathews, and Keith Overbite.
