As usual, the White House Protocol Office didn’t bother to research the proper way to bow. 1st)You bend at the waist ~15 degrees, with your arms at your side and 2nd) You don’t shake hands while doing so. It is perfectly fine to bow fairly deeply like this when greeting high status Japanese folks, in their own Nation, even if you’re the President. With everyday introductions, you’d just bend a bit less. I don’t know what the big deal is – this was an occasion where it was ok to bow, unlike with the Saudi King.
First he “bowed” to the Saudi king. Now, he “bowed” to the Japanese king. How many more kings will Barack Obama “bow” to? And, of course, when Jesus Christ comes back (hopefully soon), will he then “bow” to the King of Kings”? Just asking.

Actually, I think bowing is also a form of applause, and as such a it’s a lovely gesture. People across AMERICA, and around the world, take ‘bows’ in various ways every day – live theatre, Carnegie Hall, a tip of the hat, a lift of the hand(s), a nod of approval or thanks with the head, and even in a smile… as when you purchase fresh loaves of bread from your local baker, wave at him, and he grins from ear to ear. He knows you’re well-pleased with the work of his hands. He knows your confidence in him is so strong, so steadfast, that you trust the lives of your family members with his bread on your table. Your baker understands. The appreciation is mutual for he knows who is “buttering” his bread! It’s a win-win!

As an American who has lived and worked in Japan for more than 17 years, and has family ties there for more than 55, I am appalled and dismayed at the comical behavior of the America President when meeting the Emperor of Japan. Emperor Akihito is a political equal and not a superior.
To the Western mind, this all seems so trivial, but to Asia it is not.
The President bowed not once but several times, bobbing like a Dicky Bird. This action is one of submission and capitulation, not to mention, foreigners are not expected to bow, as they don’t know how to do it.
This additional action of bowing to another foreign monarch is typical of a man who hasn’t the slightest idea of foreign policy, Asia, Japan or its customs.
The President should be home bowing to the families of those cut down in the Ft. Hood attack, and spending time explaining to them why his administration failed to stop Maj. Hasan when there was ample evidence that this murderer was psychotic and dangerous, not bowing to a monarch whose county, our men and woman in uniform, protect.
