Water World Actor Kevin Costner Testifies on Gulf Clean-up

Fears and frustrations over the Gulf oil spill dominated the congressional agenda Wednesday. Lawmakers heard from the Interior Sec'y, a fisherman demanding BP live up to its promises and an actor who says he may have an oil cleanup solution.

Kevin Costner, James Cameron and Roman Polanski could team up to create adolescent water world avatars to swim around and clean up the oil.

Paul Thompson   June 9th, 2010 - 10:00 pm

Who’s to blame for the less than luster oil well breaking.

Alot of you the blame is you…..

I’ve dealt exclusively with Chevron for years, because they go to
great pains to make sure they don’t have an ‘accident.’

WE have three enemies, ignorance, error and arrogance.
I have heard nobody speak the truth the “problem” is an
unconcerned, uncaring, uneducated populace.

Where is She?   June 9th, 2010 - 10:11 pm

Well they’ve heard from that Hollywood jackass, when are they going to get Whoopie to testify?

At least she could be useful for the cleanup. Throw her off a crab boat and she’d likely soak up the entire Gulf of Mexico.

SO WHAT   June 9th, 2010 - 10:13 pm

So just because an evil liberal actor has a good idea we should not use it because you f**king sh!tstains are too cool ??

GET A LIFE

SO WHAT !!   June 9th, 2010 - 10:15 pm

WHO CARES WERE THE IDEA CCOMES FROM AS LONG AS IT IS A GOOD ONE!!!!

do you skid marks have an issue with the idea or the plan that he has ?? Or is it automatically bad because its from a lib ???

you people make me SICK

Oilbama schooled   June 9th, 2010 - 10:44 pm

This guy has more answers than Oilbama , bet Oilbama has a better golf game.

Sickofobama   June 9th, 2010 - 10:47 pm

SO WHAT !!:

If Costner’s idea works, I’m all for it. But King Obama has the ultimate say so let’s see if he’s willing to listen to a fellow lib.

But this is Obama’s Katrina and you better remember that the next time that idiot blames Bush for anything.

dumbasslib-hater   June 9th, 2010 - 11:14 pm

Where is Shaun Penn and his Film crew to rescue the Fish???? He had no problem jumping in the middle of Katrina with his Boat full of Film Crew and Room for One Passenger! Oh Yeah,Bush isn’t President, but his Obamination Lackey IS!

FedUp   June 9th, 2010 - 11:19 pm

Guys! Knock it off and grow up. Try to have a mature conversation here… It doesn’t matter whether you are D, R, or I – what matters is cleaning up the Gulf! Period.

Is there ANYONE out there who knows how to stop that well from gushing? Can we rally the American people to help in the clean up? Can we raise money for those who have lost their jobs, homes, livelihoods?

C’mon we run all over the world helping victims of various disasters. Well, now these innocent people, families, and communities as well as birds, sea creatures, animals and wild life need us!!!

Have we forgotten that WE ARE THE GREATEST NATION ON THE PLANET!?!?!?!?! Let’s stop tearing each other down and let’s remember what’s important before it’s too late!!!!!! And let’s get to work on this – each and every one of us!!! Or we can kiss this great nation goodbye.

Paul Thompson   June 9th, 2010 - 11:39 pm

@Fedup

The first question I’d ask is BP trying to stop the oil flowing from the broken well…in other words, ‘plug it’ or are they trying to save their investment and keep the well open so they can get whatever oil they can from it and in their greatest hope ’save it’ for future production.

unkeeaf   June 9th, 2010 - 11:58 pm

This is just getting stupid now. Kevin Costner from Water World. That is one of the worst movies ever made. Just like the Obama Presidency is one of the worst ever.

John Campbell   June 10th, 2010 - 12:26 am

If Kostner has something then lets have a look at it. My problem is the Representatives telling BP they don’t want them advertising. Obviously the leftist held hostage Congress doesn’t want any counter statements making it to the public. In this report alone the implication is going after money from BP and without limits. It’s an intentional effort to exploit BP by stealing their money well after this is over and done. This is an outrage, but it’ll never be presented for what it truly is from a leftist press.

infinitefreedom   June 10th, 2010 - 12:29 am

Are you people just assuming that he is a lib because he acts, or does he have a record of being a lib?

But that doesn’t matter right now, I think that it was very kind of him to travel across the country to offer one solution. So I say thank you, Kevin Costner.

Personally, I think the feds can’t afford to do anything, because they have spent us into oblivion, & forgot about emergencies.

& this is yet another way that the liberal agenda scr*ws the American People. (but that’s only my opinion)

Warren   June 10th, 2010 - 1:00 am

He invested in oil skimming and separation technology a while back, before the spill…didn’t he? Please, conservatives, don’t be quite so knee-jerk. Make an effort to work and think together once in a while.

Taxpayer1234   June 10th, 2010 - 1:07 am

Yep, I heard Costner (and his brother?) got interested in clean-up ideas after the Exxon Valdez disaster. I also heard he’s invested quite a lot of dough into the idea. I guess it’s some kind of centrifuge.

Kagiso Edwards   June 10th, 2010 - 2:45 am

Is it really so strange an idea, is it really too much to ask, to have Obama gather real engineers, the best in our nation, to figure out how to stop the flow of oil and how to protect the shores from more oil? Instead .. we get this manure from celebrities…Epic Failure by TPOTUS…

Battle Yak   June 10th, 2010 - 2:48 am

At least Costner is being a gentleman about it. And he has invested millions in working on this. He’s not like James Cameron who goes around calling others moron while asking if he can help.

COconserv   June 10th, 2010 - 3:09 am

I am about as conservative as you get but I agree that this should have at least been tried. I did some research on this when I heard it mentioned a couple weeks ago. Kevin did not create this, his brother who is a scientist did. Kevin just put the public face on it. From the records I have seen there are about 300 of these centrifuges that could be brought to the area. There are different sizes up to 2.5 ton units (this unit alone is supposed to be capable of keeping up with the flow from the leak) that could be put to work in different areas to reduce the impact of the spill.

I also read how much money that Kevin put into the company, about $40 million, and do not have a problem with him making a profit if it works. I am not a big fan of Kevin Kostner but think that should not be a reason not to try a system that could help the area.

I spent a month in Louisiana after Katrina. I was there two weeks after it hit and spent time in St. Bernard parish as well as the River center in Baton Rouge and I think anything that can help this area that has already went though so much should be tried without politics or bureaucracy getting in the way.

Woodward   June 10th, 2010 - 4:27 am

Who is stopping Kevin Costner from saving the Gulf? Not I, nor anyone here! So to all of you who post comments like “who cares if he’s a Lib, give him a chance” maybe you should complain to your precious government. It is they who are blocking Mr. Costner’s efforts. It is not conservatives, Tea Party members, George Bush or the evil Israelis. It is not the Gulf state Governors nor BP standing in the way. The people who are preventing Mr. Costner from deploying his centrifuges are the very government HE RAISED MONEY FOR, CAMPAIGNED FOR AND SUPPORTED. Wrap your tiny little, public school dumbed-down brains around that fact. Mr. Obama and his Socialist administration, who have been “on the case since day one” are the only thing standing in the way of
Mr. Costner.

I don’t like Mr. Costner, I will not watch his movies, he shall never get a dime of my money. But I have a great deal of respect for his efforts with his centrifuge venture. He is walking the walk, something few celebrities actually do. But the Liberal government HE helped put into power will not allow him to help in the Gulf clean-up efforts, shouldn’t you people be asking why? Are you afraid of the answer? Who is John Galt?

A camel   June 10th, 2010 - 5:04 am

A camel is a horse designed by a committee. Congressional committees are busy work for schmoozers.

This forum is a great place for ugly little people to practice their ultracool profanity they learned at middle school.

COconserv   June 10th, 2010 - 5:06 am

I agree with Woodward. This is not being stopped by the conservatives, Tea Parties or any other right wing organization. The ultimate call comes down to the current administration and the bureaucracy that goes with it. The leak can be blamed on Bush with some stretching of the truth but the clean up and containment of the oil in the water is squarely on the shoulders of the current administration. After 50 days everything that could possibly be tried to contain the oil should have been in place and tried no matter how illogical it sounds.

By the way I spent 10 years on submarines in the Navy and have first hand experience with centrifuges used to seperate oil and think this idea should have been one of the first to have been at least tried.

Mick Russom   June 10th, 2010 - 5:25 am

Progressive traitor communist scum caused this, caused the OIL SPILLS, caused Mercury from COAL BURNING, even caused the gas explosion in Texas. They want

rigs OUT OF SIGHT, so deepwater rigs happen. They hate nuclear, so we burn stuff like cavemen due to progressive liberals.

Even is the USA doesn’t drill, everyone else will . Every last drop of economically obtainable oil WILL BE BURNED. China will do it. India will do it. They

will kick the Sierra Club losers in the balls and take the oil.

To do anything significant, you must spend and help and allow and promote NUCLEAR POWER and FUSION RESEARCH, but the progressives have urinated and stymied

Nuclear Power since the 1970s, and look what it got us? Mercury from coal and oil being burned for all energy, along with coal and natural gas. Nuclear is

10000x cleaner. But the stupid progressives stopped it.

Progressives cause all of the problems, just go a little long term, you see the lefties were racists, the lefties were Tammany Hall and Boss Tweed, the

lefties have terrorized America for hundreds of years.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_M._Tweed

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tammany_Hall

But you see I’ve been asking for nuclear power from TARP and STIMULUS money, but all we have done with it is NOTHING. Just funding ACORN or whatever it was

renamed to into local chapters.

This presidency is a complete and total anti-American failure regime Cloward Pivening America to death.

Otraitor’s regime. The oligarchical collectivists wet dream.

TAXCUT   June 10th, 2010 - 6:31 am

April 23: (Reuters) – President Barack Obama has no plans to reconsider his proposal for new offshore oil drilling in the aftermath of an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the White House said on Friday.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said the administration had taken swift action to ensure the safety of workers and the environment after the spill, which on Thursday measured one mile by five miles.

Asked whether Obama had second thoughts on offshore drilling, Gibbs said, “No.”

Obama still believes that “we have to have a comprehensive solution to our energy problems,” and the spill did not open up new questions about his drilling plan, he said.

“We’ve taken swift action to ensure the safety of those that are there and to ensure the safety to the environment by capping the exploratory well,” Gibbs said.

“We need the increased production. The president still continues to believe the great majority of that can be done safely, securely and without any harm to the environment,” he said.

David Nance   June 10th, 2010 - 7:15 am

Not so fast cracking on Mr. Costner or Cameron. Both know about the open water. Cameron may not be an Oil person but knows how to work and get things done at the deeper depths. The devices Mr. Costner has offered sounds like they would work.

Even if they only extracted one gallon of oil out of the water, it would be better than the army of lawyers Ovomit has sent down to get in everybody’s way.

Dave   June 10th, 2010 - 8:06 am

Kudos to Costner, unlike most enviros he’s put his own time and money in to the effort. A real man of action.

Costner did not invent these machines. But he had the good sense to financially back this company & help them bring it to market. I find that admirable.

Mindless celebrity cretins arise, here is your chance. Now starring in ring three under the big tent, we have a self professed expert in off shore drilling – Costner. And next legal advice attorney, O’Donnell. But wait the flap is still open, plenty of time for more of the extreme left to congregate while they console their leader, Barry Soetoro. Barbra, Alec, Steenbergen, McCartney, …………………

@Fedup,
I completely agree. At least Mr. Costner has an idea and a machine. Let’s see what the guy can do. There are no stupid ideas when trying to deal with the greatest ecological disaster in history. We all know the incompetence of this lousy president.

fulljump   June 10th, 2010 - 11:43 am

Best thing is to go out there in the gulf and suck the floating sludge up with oil tankers. If Costner wants to go in closer to shore and run his separator’s for crying out loud let him do it. Why wait??

Jim   June 10th, 2010 - 11:55 am

I have met Kevin Costner, While he is somewhat a liberal and I do not always agree with his ideas, he is also a gentleman and unlike many on the left, he is willing to listen to other points of view. The invention that his brother came up with is very promising. And unlike many far right wingers, I don’t care who invented the damn gizmo. As long as it will get the job done. What I don’t understand is why congress is sitting on their collective arses and not getting the best and brightest down to the gulf. Why are we having hearing after hearing on this. One possible answer. And the thought of it scares the crap out of me if it is true. Obama and company want as much damage as possible. Hence the slow response. With a major disaster he can force his promise of causing energy prices to skyrocket. He can get his cap and trade laws passed without any problem. He can make those on the gulf dependent on federl dollars just to stay afloat. In my opinion, based on who Obama has in the whitehouse as advisors, I believe that Obama will use any and all crisis to his advantage to take away from the American people our rights and values. He does not care about the average American. he has mocked the majority more times than I care to count. And BP is his cup of tea. A major disaster that he can exploit to the full advantage of his agenda.

The companies largest capacity machines clean 200 gallons per minute. They stated that BP purchased 32 of the machines which would clean 6,000,000 gallons per day (total).
The gulf of mexico holds aprx 643 quadrillion gallons of water. That is 6.43 x 10 to the 17th power. 6,000,000 gallons a day means that after nearly 3 MILLION YEARS (2,936,073 years) nearly one percent of the water will have been cleaned.

Now, lets say that BP purchased 32 million machines, instead of just 32 machines. That means they could clean 1% of the water in just three years. Of course, it would make Kevin Costner quite rich for BP to buy 32 million of their machines, but I am thinking there is some serious impracticality going on here.

No, the real answer was to shut down the leak as soon as possible, with a well planted series of explosives.

I’ve been a fan of Costner for a while, and I appreciate his approach to conservationism. Please liberal, don’t be quite so knee-jerk. Make an effort to not place everyone in the same box because of a few comments.

Also to knee-jerking conservatives, back off on Costner. He’s definitely not a bleeding heart liberal. He doesn’t talk about his politics very much, but from what I’ve seen he’s conservative to libertarian in a lot of things.

vchandler   June 13th, 2010 - 11:12 pm

I have also read about this idea and am quite surprised that it has not been tried. While it would not do anything to stop the flow of oil, it could minimize the damage from the flow until a permanent solution can be put in place. Who came up with the idea is not important – what is important is whether or not it has a reasonable chance of positively affecting the situation. From what I have read, it’s the most logical idea out there. What would it hurt to try it? I can’t believe it would make the situation any worse than it already is.
