How much ya wanna bet that most of the protesters do not even attend Berkeley? It is a campus surrounded by a big, mostly black, economically depressed ghetto, and academically it is nothing as radical a student body as it was decades ago. If anything, you’ll find a greater percentage of aging radical faculty than percentage of radical students there.

So….What’s the real story here? Note that the caption identifies the demonstrators as “protestors” and not as students. Next, the caption says that it began when…. “The hall, which is under construction, was taken over by a couple of dozen demonstrators who broke windows, sprayed graffiti and used a sound system”.

Berkeley has over ten thousand students. Methinks a whole lotta information has been left out of this story.

As a graduate of Berkeley, I am not surprised. Students will have to learn that as long as the government subsidizes the loans for higher education, the fees for these schools will continue to rise to the equilibirum between school fees and the debt load capability of the family unit. The school gets rich, the government claims a gift to the people. Students and/or their parents get further into debt. It is an economic lesson that liberals do not understand. The same economic lesson applies to housing as well.

Separately, I remember walking into a bakery in Berkeley in the late ’80s. They had Chez, Sandanista and Mao posters up on the wall and $40 tarts behind the glass. That explained Berkeley in a nutshell.
