Union Boss: It’s Fiction… We Don’t Have a Deficit Crisis

Richard Trumka runs the AFL-CIO, one of the single largest supporters of President Obama and the Democratic Party.

AZCobraman   August 10th, 2010 - 7:36 am

Sooooo, not only do we not have a 'deficit problem' but members of the press are responsible for not properly assplaining the Obama administrations need to spend more money we don't have….Brilliant!

Bill_Lumbergh   August 10th, 2010 - 7:38 am

…and if you don't believe him, he'll BREAK YOUR FRICKIN' KNEE CAPS!

OILBAMA   August 10th, 2010 - 7:39 am

Well if this is true, I guess they'll be praising bush then

Here's a fictional tale called "A kenyan who never ran anything but his mouth
can run the country"

And here is the NON-fiction tale, you only have to add one letter
"A kenyan who never ran anything but his mouth
can ruin the country"

When will this tale end?

DavidC99   August 10th, 2010 - 7:42 am

No deficit crisis?

Um…

Yeah.

Right.

His own little world, I see.

86-44   August 10th, 2010 - 7:43 am

What he is really sayin is that "HE, NOR THE AFL-CIO, HAS A DEFICIT CRISIS"

Keep sending in those union dues you dumbass blue collar donkey workers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ScarySoetoro   August 10th, 2010 - 7:43 am

What a coincidence that when he knocks on doors the issues people talk about are the ones he's involved in. See, when I talk to people they seem most concerned about the Constitution, high taxes and spending, repealing Obamacare, abortion, foreign policy, and Obama's birth certificate, despite how they are doing personally. In fact, they think they'll do better personally if the government and thugs like this stay out of their hair.

RightUnite   August 10th, 2010 - 7:49 am

Oh, and I guess his degree is in economics??? Are you freaking kidding me??? Not surprised to see another lying liberal dog….

PaBowHunter   August 10th, 2010 - 7:51 am

Typical liberal spinster. He attempts to mitigate the effect and perception of the deficit by placing blame on everyone including himself, speaking of who did a bad job on the deficit. But then states that the republicans are actually to blame for the deficit, shifting the lions share of the blame to the republicans.
Complete spinster bullcrap. But the less than intelligent or educated victim class will gobble it up.

UrinalMint   August 10th, 2010 - 7:52 am

Of course the unions don't think there is a financial crisis. They are being given money right and left by Barry-Bob's regime.

carter137   August 10th, 2010 - 7:53 am

This idiot claimed that he knocked on 20-30,000 doors without anyone claiming that the deficit in a major problem. Well, he didn't knock on my door! This man is nothing but a bully trying to advance the cause of his union. If he really cared about the american working, he would fight to end illegal immigration; it's the illegals who are taking away jobs from americans and depressing wages.

JoeDoakes101   August 10th, 2010 - 7:56 am

To The Editor, and Mr. Trumpka,

The Great Depression did not end as a result of government largess; the Great Depression ended because the US went to war, and in so doing annihilated the enemies ability to produce goods, and thus wage war. By the wars end the only country with any manufacturing capacity was the good old USA. Admittedly, FDR’s policies might well have saved this nation from further erosion, but the birth of entitlement programs of that era, and those that followed, will in the next three decades combined with the interest on our debt, completely drain the productive resources of our nation. That is, our entire federal budget will be equal to those financial promises, and if the next forty-seven months of this administration are anything like the first one – those promises will buy me a cup of coffee, and a doughnut when I begin to rely on them.

As far as your apparent animus toward Republicans for trying to be, at long last, responsible with the funny money that is the American dollar; the toughest part of any fight is not deciding to do the right thing – it is doing it. Under Minority Whip Cantor the Republican party demonstrated that it is prepared to, at long last, stand for fiscal responsibility. Seven Democrats stood with Republicans on the last “stimulus” vote. While I do not have the responsibility of being director of any part of the Republican party; I am a registered Republican. My party provided the leadership, Abraham Lincoln, that preserved the Union and ended slavery. My party provided the leadership, Ronald W. Reagan, that pulled the United States, and the rest of the world out of the malaise of the 70’s. I’m proud of the Republican party and the spine it is showing against this self-destructive economic philosophy.

In so far as your assertion that the stimulus bill will create millions of jobs and provide for various forms of alternative energy. Sometimes when it snows I hire my teenage neighbor to shovel; my neighbor is a smart hardworking fellow, he once revealed he is saving it for college. Why? He wants to grow economically, maybe he will decide to sacrifice present wants for a matter of years and realize the goal of coming back to XXXXXXX and raise a family – as I have. That is real job creation; make work projects do not create communities, they destroy them. As for alternative energy, there is only one, nuclear power. At present not one reactor is under construction in the entire United States. All other forms of alternative energy even if we max them out – wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass – do not have the horsepower to do the job. Even if they did we cannot transport enough power from those areas that create it to those that will consume it.

The only way out of our current situation is to determine what is absolutely necessary and to use the organs of the federal government to fix the damage it caused, and take the rest, and throw it away. In doing that we will end the constant cycle that creates one crises after another. In doing this we will be able to rebuild our banks, our military, our communities, and fund restructured entitlement programs via a vibrant and growing economy. Building modern nuclear power plants, using that clean power to convert domestically produced coal to domestically produced liquid fuel; and continue to support applied science to research solar panel technology to shrink the cost of production, and increase its capacity to generate power and batteries to store it on cloudy days.

In fact, I think this nightmare will be fertile ground for any politician, Democrat or Republican, to advocate for fiscal soundness, insurmountable national defense, restructured entitlement programs, and individual State control of the rest. Sir, politics ought not to be about who wins and who looses, or what party prevails, it ought to be about who can best articulate, and promote our shared values, and principles and in doing that lift all citizens up, not a few at the expense of the other. Remember, as President Reagan said, “If we lower our standards we lower the flag.” I say we put the shovels away and grab a bull dozer and a half track and get to work. I say we take our eyes off the politicians and put them back on the business leaders, the engineers, the scientists and the service members who preserve this great country, and all those men and women that make this country move everyday without so much as a thank you. This is where our attention should be, this is where our hope will turn to reality, this is where change will hone the granite that is the impenetrable American spirit.

very well put sir. They scream racist, but it was democrats who segregated the military, the liberals who erased our proud BLACK founding fathers, and filibustered the civil rights movement. republicans used to be the party of peace as well, dems led us into both world wars. we need to get back to a Calvin Coolidge mentality.

H2K   August 10th, 2010 - 8:27 am

…because if we actually have a deficit "crisis', then the public won't be so willing to prop up the grotesquely lavish union pension funds. You know, the promises made to the union members for higher and higher retirement wages, all medical paid for, for themselves and family. And in return, the union members only had to vote these guys in. Now, knowing that these pension systems were unsustainable meant little or nothing to the union members nor their bosses. That's why the bosses have forged a tight relationship with liberal democrats who will bail out the union pensioners at the expense of those of us who have saved throughout our careers….again, in exchange for their vote.

See how this works?

wohlfguy   August 10th, 2010 - 8:27 am

This is the biggest bunch of BS I have heard in a long time. No deficit problem? The debt from when Obama took office up to now has increased 25%!!! WTF is this morons problem? These heads-in-the-sand libs seriously need to consider getting help for their mental issues.

excelsiorRog   August 10th, 2010 - 8:29 am

He is correct, the self-centered, useless, steal-from-other-sycophants, whose doors HE knocks on, are not worried about the deficit. They only worry about here and now, TODAY. Anyone thinking beyond the moment (anyone with 1/2 a brain, that is) realizes the only difference between an individual overspending and government overspending is the time difference before the PAIN is felt.

We DO NOT have a TAX problem. We have a spending problem.

Stop the insane spending!

It is not the rich than need taxing, it is the government that needs to quit SPENDING!

If we don't have a deficit problem, then we don't need more money, then the George Bush tax reductions should remain untouched and perhaps taxes should even be reduced further. Via email to: Rep. Hall, Appointed Sen. for NY, Sen. Schumer, Pres. Obama
Washington DC

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Yertle:

I am concerned that the manner in which the federal government is operating is eerily like how the Krupps munitions factory was still billing the Nazi’s – after Hitler committed suicide. Benjamin Franklin once remarked that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing, and expecting different results. The congress has passed bailouts, and rescues, and soon a, stimulus package, all in an empty effort to save the Republic from the financial malfeasance of governments small and large. If they failed to work in the past what reason do you believe that they will work in the future? It appears to me that the solution is obvious. Forgetting financial reality for a moment. In a given year the US economy generates 10 to 15 trillion dollars. I say why wait for the year to pass. Next time all of you are at your respective posts pass a bill to print $12.5 Trillion and disperse it. At least that way we will all know who is getting the money.

Obviously, however enticing, this idea is absurd. Is it any more so than one insolvent institution, the US Government ($2 Trillion running deficit, $12 Trillion in debt), giving another insolvent institution, US Banks(Bloomberg news service reports $4-$5 Trillion required to re-capitalize them, at the current rate of loss), money it does not have anything to back it other than more debt, and a beaten up taxpayer? With ink so fresh on the bonds that the Communist Chinese government has yet to collect the interest on it? I fail to see the wisdom in how creating a smaller hole in one spot, and a bigger hole in another will ever do any of us any good. This philosophy has not worked in the past and it will not work in the future. The evil economic stew we are cooking has been brewed before, and it will taste just as bitter this time.

When Ronald Reagan took the reigns of this nation in 1981 we were in far worse shape than we are in today, a large portion of our military qualified for poverty assistance, a business owner could not breathe without the governments permission, inflation was sky high, unemployment at double digits. Unless we do the right thing now we will be there again, rapidly. Our economic problems today are manufactured by our own fiscal malfeasance – there is no shortage of food, energy, labor, or capital. What we have too much of is the heavy hand of government deciding who gets what, how much, and when via a complex set of regulations and tax policy. President Reagan, to the largest extent possible, ended that madness, and while the 80’s were no picnic, that decade created 20,000,000 new jobs, strengthened this nation so we could carry on in the future, and we brought most of the world with us as a lucky strike extra. The economic lesson of the 80’s is that freedom and economic liberty are viral, and the only antidote for it is big government – this is something we have forgotten or chosen to ignore. Up to now President Obamas rhetoric has been the antithesis of this pro growth philosophy. Mr. Obama thinks that a combination of targeted tax cuts, welfare, and government make work projects are the cure for our ills. To do this Mr. Obama will need more bureaucrats, and add more legal and fiscal complexity to meet his goals. I reject this economic cure and its implementation. Remember, what the government gives to one it must take from another. How does the government know that the capital or wealth it is redistributing will not be used for a much wiser purpose then the one it has ordained? It doesn’t. Like an alcoholic in a bar, the government drinks without accountability, and spends the monthly mortgage payment on whiskey without forethought, and hurts everyone it claims to care about. Remember these thoughts as you create the next seemingly free government give away; someone has to pay for it, that someone will be our children, their payment will either be in gold or blood.

This insanity of printing, borrowing, and misallocation of capital must stop. No country on earth has ever borrowed, spent or taxed it’s way to recovery, let alone prosperity. War and Depression? Absolutely. If this economic cancer is allowed to metastasize we will once again be pushed as a nation into a choice of not whether we should or should not do something, but whether or not we can. The “stimulus package” legislation all of you are considering is nothing more than economic suicide.

Respectfully,

At least he is a real AmeriKan BUT he isn’t telling you where the money is hidden. Read the link above and start kicking A$$ and taking names.

It IS NOT IN ANY OF THE GOVERNMENTS That they Openly display, IT IS HIDDEN FROM VIEW IN THE CAFR !!!!

CAFRs Are the True State of the State, Not Budgets

THE CAFR SHELL GAME-THE REVOLUTION-BE A PART OF IT!

Gov Shake Down “GROSS” INCOME of government is now 1/3rd “TAX” income and 2/3rds NON-TAX income derived from: return on INVESTMENTS and money generated from government Enterprise projects.

Any Company or in fact Country can be “made” or “broken” through the use of those government investment funds. China and India in 2007 restricted new US “Government” investments, now several trillion dollars strong in China and India so that US Government investments would not further increase control (take-over) in their own markets. China and India learned by seeing what happened to Mexico then Russia when the US Government investment machine came rolling on in.

If US Government cashed in just 20% of their International investment chips (held outside of the dollar), in conversion back to the dollar, the dollar would shoot through the roof, with the dollar index jumping from 70 from its low to over 94 in the snap of a finger -DOLLAR INDEX CHART get it? (POST NOTE: They are doing it!)

A complete government and (taken over by government) syndicated news media blackout has existed for over 60 years and it started back in 1946.

WAKE UP! THIS IS FACT, NOT FICTION AND IT AFFECTS YOUR EVERY DAY LIFE!
The #1 Profit makers for Government on their investments are: The Pharmaceuticals; Banking/Finance/insurance; Oil Companies; War Industry; and “INTERNATIONAL investments outside of the dollar” – (400% to 600% profits)

Further education on where the Local, State and Federal Government is hiding the citizens money. It is the citizens money not to grow bigger governments!

Don’t believe it? Would eliminate property taxes and income taxes if they were FORCED to release these funds back to the citizens. That is why it is hidden in the CAFR.–

Chamberlain   August 10th, 2010 - 11:26 am

He should keep on saying idiotic things like this; more people will realize he is out of touch with reality. The union is the single entity within this country that is tearing it up and Obama is a wholly owned subsidiary of Trumpca. The latest evidence is the $26 billion bail out now going through the union's right arm. He is not in financial trouble – he has a rich uncle – Barrack Hussein Obama. Now teachers, who are union, are being bailed out. Hey Trumpca – snap you fingers and Obama will come running. Card Check; coming up between November 2nd and December 31. One side note; the beaches of the gulf – Trumpca would not permit the Jones Act to be waived so foreign ships could come in. Get it while you can there leach, Trumpca – your uncle will not be there after Jan 2013.

mackycat   August 10th, 2010 - 11:33 am

You've got that right… I did a simple google search and found that his AFL-CIO salary for 2010 is at least $239,000, probably more (he apparently gave himself at least a $74,000 raise over the last four years). In addition, Trumka will also get an AFL-CIO pension equal to 60 percent of his top pay. As much as I hate the mother f'er, he's not stupid. He's lining his own pockets at taxpayer expense and at the expense of the union workers under him. Yet he points the finger at "greedy corporate america" as he bleeds the system for all he can. POS mother f'er. All of these top union officials are making that kind of money with insane pension and benefits. Is it any wonder that we are out of money?

mariodebarrio   August 10th, 2010 - 11:45 am

I just checked the latest CAFR in my State. They have in EXCESS of $14 BILLION of the States taxpayers money hidden away in the CAFR. Get smart people, all of the governments in the U.S. are gaming you. How much is hidden in your state?

SonnyB   August 10th, 2010 - 12:48 pm

Yeah, what he means is the AFL-CIO doesn't have a deficit crisis because all us sucker taxpayers will bail them out!

SonnyB   August 10th, 2010 - 12:52 pm

These union thugs are shameless. Just put a suit and tie on an ape, just like this Richard Trotsky guy, and there's the union leadership.
