The truth is, the people involved in writing the Declaration were rich white men. Even though they thought they themselves should have these rights, they didn't want to extend those rights to poor people, women, black people, Jewish people, or Native Americans – more than half of the people living in the United States at this time. Even though representatives of these people asked to be included and to get human rights, in the end the Declaration of Independence did not include them.
But that was then and this is now.

I have felt the long arm of the government by choosing what classes and career options are made by them for me. Acquire any book by David Barton, but you may want to start with Setting the Record Straight: American History in Black and White.
