Saying Haiti was hit with an earthquake because they are cursed is a bit much there Pat. Nothing could be more untruthful and annoying than to speculate that weather or earthly phenomenon is controlled by God. When a tornado kills dozens in a Southern Baptist town in the south, I don’t say God’s wrath was behind this. When Jesus demanded the storm calm, did He go against God since God supposedly is behind weather? I think not and will pray for the Christians of Haiti as well as those who have not accepted Christ.

I went to Haitit on a short term mission trip in the mid-1980’s. When you observe at the people, talk to them, view the decimation (by the locals) of the countryside, etc., I have no doubt, that much of the nation’s woes are tied to the pacts entered into by Haiti’s past leaders.

The slaves were able to succeed in ousting the French because the French were dumb enough to have some ridiculously low number of French soldiers to keep over 500,000 slaves from turning on them (I want to say it was some 500:1 ratio of slaves to soldiers). That is how the slaves pushed the French out, freeing themselves and establishing sovereignty for Haiti; not some pact with the devil. Poor leadership and corruption are to blame for the disasters that Haiti has encountered since. In fact, Santoria was not really widely practiced until the 1800’s long after Haiti was a free nation. Oh yeah Mr. Pat Robertson, it is also little known that most who practice Santoria in Haiti are also practicing Christians (yes as in Catholics and Baptists). Those who wish to help impoverished countries should really learn of the History of their dilemmas before making a statement that tarnishes the image of the country and its people both locally and abroad. In 1791 a slave revolt began in Haiti. Supposedly this began with a voodoo ritual held at night and this is where the legend of invoking dark spirits come from. If they did or didn’t isn’t really known, but the war that followed was extremely bloody and genocidal. It more likely that the system that arose during and after the revolt favored corrupt and brutal regimes that pillaged the country for the next 200 years.

Just do a little research into the history of Haiti and you can find most of this stuff out.

The poster who referred to Robertson as superstitious is probably right. Yes, Haiti was one of the very first countries in the hemisphere to go independent – but it had nothing to do with the devil. And, while the DR is far better off than Haiti, I’d hardly call it prosperous. It’s per capita income is on par with Guatemala. As for Haiti being “cursed”, well that’s a combination of centuries of mismanagement, government corruption, poverty and just plain bad luck. The Haitians are known for their voodoo worship. Voodod worship equates itself with the worship of Satan. Will anyone argue with this? Is there a God? Umm.. I believe there is. I think it takes a lot more faith to believe that humans somehow created themselves from a pile of muck than it does to believe God created us. So why are so many against God? I’ve actually been to Haiti several times doing mission work, and Pat Robertson should do the same before shooting his mouth off in such an irresponsible manner. If he took the time to actually visit various parts of Haiti, he would find a significant portion of the population who believes in God and prays to the same Jesus Christ as does Mr. Robertson. There is a part of the population who practice a cultist combination of Voodoo and Catholicism, however this is a minority. Even by the widest stretch of logic, one could not validly argue that Voodoo dominates the Haitian culture.

Mr. Robertson is a member of the kook minority fringe and anyone who thinks the vast majority of Christians share his viewpoints is just dead wrong.

The story has been around for decades and Pat Robertson is obviously a believer in the story. After some research it appears that there are plenty of people both Haitian and non-Haitian that believe the story to be true. I think that it is incredibly stupid for a religious leader to portray the story as being definitely true especially when the story is so controversial to begin with.

To assume that this is s story dreamed up by Pat Robertson on the other hand is quiet stupid as well. The story apparently has had lots of coverage for quite a long period of time. several guys I was stationed with over my years in the Army that Toussaint L’Ouverture

fearsome army of the times and were defeated in Santo Domingue (now Haiti and Dominican

While I respect Mr Robertson, I don’t believe that statements like his help bring people to the Lord. The short answer to why these things happen is sin. It’s not necessarily the sins of the Haitian people, but the sins of all of us. That includes you, me, and Pat Robertson. It was our disobedience that brought sin and death into the world. I also know that God is in complete control and will comfort all those who turn to Him. My family sponsors a young girl through Mission of Hope Haiti, and our prayers go out to Dolene, her family, and all the Haitian people. While my heart aches, I trust that as people look for answers, that some of them will turn to Jesus Christ.

I listened to what Pat Robertson said and find nothing in it but the truth. A nation is cursed or blessed by God based on the leaders rejection of the One True God, or not.
The Haitians made a pact with the devil and cursed their descendents. The Word of God says “a Curse does not come without cause”-Proverbs 26:2.

To get free of the curse for their half of the island, there must be repentance before the One True God, and a renouncing of the pact with the devil which the ancestors made.

It seems again that Haitians were heavily into voodoo since it was imported with the black slaves from Africa after Christopher Columbus discovered Haiti and named it Hispaniola. If it bothers you so much, why not get in there and read the sources that Robertson says he believes. The entire Bible is not that big a collection of books, and there are plenty of tools you can use to help understand any difficult entries. Is what he says true? I’m not a fan of Robertson (overall he does more good than bad), but Haiti is saturated with voodoo witchcraft. I have a CIA book on Haiti that even describes voodoo practiced all the way to the top leaders there. Some good theological/philsophical questions to ask is: Does God cause it? or Permit it? I just watched this video and I get that Operation Blessing is sending relief to Haiti. Pat is asking for prayer for people. It’s been a well-known fact that many Haitians are involved in voodoo and witchcraft and have been for many years. He reported that this is a true fact, not something he made up. Wow! It all began back in the Garden of Eden. Man knew God face to face and talked with Him daily. Most of the people posting here are really taking his comments out of context simply out of ignorance of Pentecostal beliefs. Pat was simply suggesting that it was a very real posibility that many of Haiti’s long term problems could be caused by demonic influence. There is nothing he said that violates the teaching of the Scriptures. When a people’s leaders sell themselves (whether through “pacts” or simply free will choice) to do the work of Satan, ALL the people will suffer. This is a principle that can be seen to play out multiple times in the history of Israel under wicked kings. Pat is not saying the people of Haiti are all (or even mostly) devil worshipers. But, given their abnormal degree of misfortune and frequent disasters, it is likely they are suffering under a generation curse for the sins of their past leaders. Any curse of this kind can only be broken by repentence and turning to Christ, binding Satan and breaking any and all curses through the name of the Lord Jesus. And, not everyone who says that they are Christian, is, either. It all depends on your definition of “Christian”, doesn’t it? Each one of us has just as much opportunity to come to know him as any other one of us. God loves each of us the same, it is we who turn away from HIM. Why do you think there are so many missionaries that are right now down in Haiti by the way? For the scenery? HE holds out His arms to all of us all the time, we’re the ones who spit in His face, call Him names and all around curse His name whenever something bad happens. Think about it, if you were Him, would you keep holding out for us? Keep praying for those folks in Haiti.

just wondering…you asked about the Dominican Republic and why they are so much more fortunate than Haiti? The reason is that when the Spanish and French controlled that portion of the island they exploited its vast natural resources for profit. The slaves, when they took control of Haiti did not know how to manage the plantations and keep the soil fertile so they laid waste to the land due to poor management of crops. Also, the war took its toll on the forestry and fertile soil as well. Thirdly, since Haiti has not industrialized properly, they still rely on wood burning as a primary source of energy. Couple that with an average population growth for a nation of millions at 2.3 percent and you have a recipe for rapid deforestation and a resultant desertification (unusable land) opposed to the Dominican Republic that has not had to deal with such a devastating past.

He also said gays caused 9/11 (God was upset with NYC) and a hurricane that hit Orlando (punishment for Gay day at Disney). What a nut job. No wonder the religious conservatives are looked upon as simpletons.

I’m a Christian and I have problems with people assuming to know the mind of God. Bad things also happen to good people but God gives us the grace to go through it. God has northing to do with earthquakes. Haiti is on a fault zone, Hello??? That means earthquakes happen there. Remember the Monserrat Volcanoe. Where are volcanoes? Always near earthquake zones. The Haitian earthquake (and the death of everyone in the U.N. Headquarters) should serve as a warning to the United States, where the Obama Administration is making “Satanic pacts” with the United Nations and others:

- Letting UN laws supplant U.S. laws
- Mandating Abortions in Government Health Care
- Forbidding the practice of Christianity in public places (while allowing every other religion)
- Promoting homosexuality in government-run schools
- Turning America into a Socialist country (a precursor to forcing America to be subjected to communism)

The earthquake was centered practically right beneath Port Au Prince. Think of it this way, San Francisco received a large amount of destruction from a 6.8 quake a few years back, but Los Angeles didn’t feel a thing. Same idea here, has nothing to do with God punishing them. Santo Domingo (the capitol of The Dominican Republic) could just as easily have a massive quake hit them in the future because they are located on a very active fault line that is similar to the same one that causes the earthquakes in California.

Perhaps this event will cause that island to repent and believe upon the Only One who can save them, and experience a time of peace and provision they have never known. And then perhaps 20-30 years from now, the Haitians would rejoice and actually be thankful this happened for through this rubble and death, came beauty and life.

As well, how can He display to the world His attributes of mercy, benevolence, compassion, and grace (as well as judgment) if not for working through events like this to display His love in the way He, through His children will pour out love, prayer, resources, and their very lives to help the Haitian people?

You ask how a good God could allow this to happen, and in doing so you make yourself out to be god and to sit in judgment of Him, which is blaspheme. God is good and in Him alone there is no darkness. How can you be pro-abortion, pro-homosexual marriage, pro-adultery, pro-fornication, pro-drunkeness, and above all, treat the sacrifice and blood of His Son as a common thing and refuse His gift of forgiveness and mercy in Christ, and yet think to sit in judgment of Him? As a retired pastor and educational administrator I take strong exception to the comments of Pat Robertson. Men, women, boys, girls, babies, Americans, Christians, care givers, Christian agency personnel who have traveled for years to Haiti to help were also killed. Mr.

Robinson, who do your represent? A loving caring God who gives life or tourself as an ego centric exhibitionist who needs strong Biblical and ethical correction. I am a devout Christian and love the Lord with all of my heart. I don’t think any of us have the exact answers to why these things happen. I only know that God is good and the Devil is bad. My prayer is for the innocent victims of this horrible tragedy in Haiti. But if a less than affluent person, part of the world or particular town/country practices a problematic and dangerous lifestyle be it drugs, violence or religion we tend to feel sorry for them and dismiss the causitive factor when tragic consequences come. Why do people tend to assume there is more virtue in poverty than in wealth, that somehow the poverty of their condition relieves them of the consequence of a bad lifestyle? My wife and I wish to express our sympathy and prayers on behalf of the people in Haiti. Today should be a day of compassion and aid. All judgments should be left for another day and to those directly involved not to self absorbed pundits whether political, social or religious.

Having been to Haiti, the poverty is extreme, some of the worst I have seen, but the people are proud, many are very hard workers, and I have never been to a place where children wear cleaner, brighter clothes to school (at least where I was). Ok, he didn’t document his ‘devil’ assertion at all, and he needs to do so. But his point is very valid. It’s not just the earthquake, Haiti has forever been a sewer of corruption, poverty and witchcraft. And at the end Robertson says we need to pray for and get relief to the people there.

So most and perhaps all of his statement is verifiable. Taken as a whole, without the sensationalist headline, he pretty much was right on. The story of the pact with the devil apparently is factual, and for the chap who asked for video of the pact, it might come as a surprise that the event in question took place about a century before movie film and about 150 years before video/TV became commonplace–just in case you did not know. Mr. Robertson is describing something that took place (see the relevant posts before mine) in Haiti’s past. And those who condemn Mr. Robertson’s alleged lack of compassion should listen through the whole clip to the end, where he actually calls for aid to the people of Haiti, says they are helping Haitians, and has his organization’s phone number is posted on the screen to contribute to relief efforts.

It seems that the majority of posters here listen to part of the story and take off on a rant. Not factual, not fair to Mr. Robertson–with whom I do not always agree, and evidence of an impaired span of attention and an inability to understand even slightly complex situations and arguments. I believe Pat is referring to a black slave and witchdoctor named Dutty Bouchman (Bouchman… Bookman because he was one of the few slaves who could read and write). The bible is replete with examples of God’s judgement against nations and that includes those that He considers His “chosen”. God uses His creation to bring judgement, so He can withhold the tectonic plates or release them to wreak havoc as He wishes. There are literally lineups outside the churches in Port-au-Prince, 7 days a week. Including times like Friday night at 11 p.m. — when it’s so crowded you can’t even get inside. Catholic churches, Protestant churches. You name it, they’re full.

As everyone is familiar, Job suffers and is afflicted terribly…the moral of the story as it were comes after. His friends come to comfort him, but then start telling Job, “You must be hiding some awful sin for God to afflict you like this. Better come clean.” To which Job insists he is not hiding some transgression. He is suffering in spite of the fact he’s blameless before God. His friends keep insisting he’s hiding something and Job keeps insisting he’s not. Finally God arrives and calls Job’s friends morons. The world doesn’t operate in some clockwork way in which bad things happen as punishment and good things happen as reward, He confirms.
