These people are less concerned about collective bargaining and more concerned about compulsory union membership. Making every State a Right to Work State is what they fear the most. They only use collective bargaining as a rally point because most people don't understand it and it doesn't sound that bad to them. If everyone comes to understand that we are trying to give workers a CHOICE in whether they want to belong to a union without it being a condition of employment, the unions lose, taxpayers and workers win.

We have been suffering for 40+ years and you think we can't hang on until 2012.

There is a common thread through military service, government employment and other forms of public sector work. That common thread is that the entire country pays for it.
It may not be "socialism" per se, but it is a social contract.
On occasion I see military or other uniformed persons, people on the public dole, having very anti-government attitudes. I find this attitude quite contradictory.
It is not a sweeping indictment of any kind.
