Michael Yon has since stated that this was not TSA but was CBP. Customs, who are law enforcement, could ask about your income for two reasons.
1. If you aren’t a citizen they can determine if you are likely to “become a public charge.”
2. If you are a citizen then they have to verify that there is no risk of smuggling or outstanding warrants.
It is possible for them to ask about your income as part of a smuggling investigation. How that is done is important. A professional interrogation elicits cooperation.

Thanks for airing this interview. There bonus is the iPods, cameras, recorders and phone they pilfer from checked baggage – 17% of all air travel theft. The money spent on their new uniforms and shoulder patches do not make them look or act more respectable, honest and believable? The TSA is a government sponsored storm trooper unit of the Bush/Obama administration and has failed in its proposed mission of improving safety. This agency needs to be dismantled.

I was asked similar questions at the ferry border crossing in Victoria CANADA! They asked me what I was coming to CA for, how long and then what I did for business – fine. When I told them I was retired (I am young) that was the beginning of the strange questions. The what did I dos, how much did I makes, how do I get income now… and they were not in the least amused when started chuckling because I thought he was joking. He told me it wasn’t. He did not say answer or you are going back to the US on the ferry you came on, but his silence told me I was expected to answer. It was only when I asked what was going on, that I had been across on the ferry and aboard my own vessel numerous times he relented. I am not sure if it was because I had decided it was enough or because while I was talking he was reading something on the computer that made him confident enough to let me through. But it was disconcerting.
