Texas Spends Upwards of $2M in Stimulus Cash to Caulk Seven Homes

Dallas Morning News: The state received millions of federal dollars from the economic-stimulus package to help poor Texans cut their energy bills, but by the end of last month, just seven homes had been weather-treated under the program. The state has spent $1.8 million of $163 million available over the past four months, with most of it going to administrative costs, such as the salaries of state workers.

ACCOUNTABILITY – WHERE IS IT?

Who got the money for doing so little?

Who were the receipients of the money connected to directly and indirectly?

Was there a conflict of interest?

Who approved the expenditure?

Who were the approvers connected to and accountable to?

Who were these people connected to directly or indirectly?

Did these people have a conflict of interest?

Emudude this is not a case of “evil rich people” as the left loves to blame everything on. No, this is, just as the text says, due to the inefficiency of having the government run a program. These “administrative costs, such as the salaries of state workers” are I’m sure going to mid level government employees – hardly rich people – but the sheer volume of them can quickly mount up costs. Remember, any government program must have people running it, and in the government that means roughly 3 times more people than the private sector. Add the various regulations, redundancies, and compliance policies, soon each department takes on its own life and becomes much like a mini corporation in its own right.

This is why I am so distrustful of any claims that the health care reform bills will save anything. New bureaus and departments are being created to do nothing more than make policies and generate paperwork. Soon it will be $2 million for 7 flu shots.

If you want to know who approved these ridiculous expenditures, just take a look in the mirror! Allowing this sort of waste and corruption for decades in this country has left us weak-willed and easily taken over by a bunch of communists. So stop being so outraged and whiny! The question is: what are you going to DO about it? Can’t figure it out, can you? I wasn’t kidding when I said weak-willed. Stupid, too. What’s black and white and Red all over? Barack Hussein Obama.

These government employees are, in fact, rich people. An accountant can compute the value of their pension and benefits package. When you do the math, computing the “net present value” many government employees wind up with a net worth of over a million dollars, no risk from investments and the most generous healthcare plans out there.

WHY DOES NO ONE DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT?

Praise the Lord! Amazing Grace!!! Sing it!

Tom from Florida   December 27th, 2009 - 11:55 am

My degree is in Building Construction Technology. I have been an estimator, Superintendent and Project Manager. The maximul that seven houses should cost, if the whole house was done inside and out, is $4,000 total.

This government is totally out of control. We need to take back our country and take it back now. Waiting for an election where there is no assurance that it will be fair is not an option.

CommonSense   December 27th, 2009 - 12:18 pm

Quit complaining, its not your money. The ones who should really be upset are the thugs who run China.

Our government leaders do not get it: Keynesian economics does not work.

When it was first used in the US during the GD our economy was mostly agrarian and industrial and it was mostly closed. The idea that we could get a multiplier effect of a pulse of government spending conceptually made sense: But no more.

With many of our products manufactured off shore and much of our industrial work done by illegal aliens, the Keynesian multiplier is one or less: We are not even getting $1 worth of benefit for a #1 worth of stimulus spending.

The multiplier used to support the massive Obama stimulus package was less than 2. In reality, it must have been less than 1. As a result, not only are we creating huge deficits through these irresponsible government actions but their stimulus is spilling over in to other economies.

If you accept the notion that investment spending is necessary to create jobs (in the long run) and that this spending must be financed with savings. Then it should be clear that not only is stimulus spending not working but it is progressively damaging. It makes it harder for our economy to recover. The private enterprises that actually create jobs must compete with the government to get financing.

The author’s point of spending on projects that improve the efficiency of the US economy would be an improvement on the current pork barrel mentality of Congress; however, it will not work to move the economy back to full employment.

Maybe the Chinese will figure this out and stop funding Washington waste.

Government Mess   December 27th, 2009 - 1:47 pm

As the greatest President (Reagan) in my lifetime said “Government is not the Solution to the Problem, Government is The Problem!” This is just another sorry waste of Taxpayers dollars. Add this to the very long list of our Government’s failures. Government can not spend Money it doesn’t have to create jobs. The only jobs being created are Government jobs from an increasingly growing bloated Government Monstrosity. Limited Government controlled by “The People” NOT Special Interest Groups is the first step in the solution to fixing our problems. If our Government really wants to put people back to work they need to cut taxes on small businesses and create tax breaks for hiring new employees. One thing is certain if we do not stop government growth nothing else will work!

I just did a quick calculation. I found out that you could build 7 (20,000) sq foot houses ENTIRELY out of caulk for that amount. This assumes that you purchase latex caulk at $1/tube. Now if we’re talking luxury digs, you could still build about 7 (3,000) sq ft houses out of that fancy silicon stuff. We haven’t seen this much caulk since Clinton was in office!

Gotta love it when the libs are in power.

olddog   December 27th, 2009 - 3:31 pm

Maybe they used the same caulk that is used to glue the tiles on the space shuttle. I hear that it’s pretty expensive stuff, but with global warming getting worse, you’ll need that kind of caulk to withstand the 200+ degree temps we can expect in a couple of years!

Mike   December 27th, 2009 - 4:34 pm

What a WASTE of taxpayer dollars!!! Can anybody say where’s the “bang for the buck” in this deal?? What a farce!

I did a little calculation on this wasted $2 million bucks of taxpayer money. The average (median) price of single family detached homes in the Dallas Fort Worth area as of 2009 is roughly $131,000 – average price of ‘one’ home. For that same $2 million you could “buy” “15″ HOMES outright instead of just ‘caulking’ these 7 homes in this charade called a stimulus package. It simply boggles the mind when one considers this Administration’s sheer amount of governmental ineptitude and lack of any fiscal accountability whatsoever before the American people, whom this Administration has essentially robbed blind spending taxpayer’s money like there is no tomorrow.

When you have a former crack cocaine junkie running the White House and who also has NO experience running anything EVER in his entire life until ‘now’ is it any wonder then why America is currently on a downward spiral towards bankruptcy and economic ruin? When crooks, tax cheats, and former drug addicts, who appear NOT to be fully rehabilitated as evidenced by their juvenile behavior(s), are in charge of running this Country then all I have to say is God help us.

Let’s do “our” part too, while gathering all of our friends and neighbors and family together and let’s join “united” in running these liberal shysters called politicians out of office come Nov. 2010 & 2012 shall we? Can I hear an amen?

Okay, you can go ahead and caulk a few more homes if you want to Barack. Just watch your back come Nov. 2012… cause you’re going down sucka. ;) The American people have spoken!! And the majority are saying NObama! NO mas! NO more! You LIED! You LIE! You’re THROUGH!

MotherRedDog   December 27th, 2009 - 5:37 pm

I’m surprised that anyone would really be surprised by this news. Every day government employees show up for work, play on the computer, read the newspaper, spend a couple hours on lunch and breaks, zerox their church, children’s, spouse’s, personal information and papers on work equipment. I’d be willing to bet my life that the government gets about 40 percent of work out of all of the government employees (on average). That, is being generous. I spent over 32 years analyzing the efficiency and effectiveness with jobs, or mainly, lack thereof. Yeah, the administrative costs for employing a whole lot of people and supplies that do nothing with 60 percent of their time, is expensive. The bigger the government gets, the worse this problem will be and the more they will want from us to pay for these “job”.

Joe   December 27th, 2009 - 6:12 pm

tacamojo   December 27th, 2009 - 6:25 pm

What surprises me is they spent only $1.8 MIL. They probably insist they came in under-budget. How much did ACORN and SEIU charge for their advice on this project? And don’t tell me they weren’t at this trough. It was done by union caulkers, right??

Vernis Magnetic   December 27th, 2009 - 6:31 pm

Sorry Holly, no money for weatherizing in the Midwest. We are busy killing fish over here. It cost $3,000,000 to kill one carp.

I think the money would have been better spent on having a fishing tournament and giving anyone that caught a carp a few hundred dollars. It would have been cheaper, safer for the environment, and would have given the unemployed something to do for the day. Instead it was just a water poisoning fish massacre. It’s what some of the environmental groups do when they are not declaring CO2 a pollutant or taking a plane to a global warming conference.

I have some SHOVEL READY Projects for the Federal Goverment, the State Goverment, the Local Goverment, and these PORUS Overpaid Taxpayer Funded Vampires. The SHOVEL READY PROJECTS begin in Washington where there are PILES AND PILES of HORSE SH-T in Congress that needs to be cleaned up. Then at the White House there are MOUNDS of Elephant SH-T that needs shoveled and lets let the Senators and Congresspeople and all their RICH Lobbyists shovel in the hot sun or in the freezing rain or snow. Lets see them start to clean up their own mess and every city, town, or village they go to with their shovels they have to give the PEOPLE (i.e AMERICAN CITIZENS) their JOBS and each and every benefit that members of Congress receive. Lastly, every Congressperson and Senator and everyone in the White House (Elected or Appointed) must take their shovels and start protecting our Borders from ILLEGAL ALIENS and our Country from MUSLIM EXTREMISTS. Then and only then will these OVERPAID PUFFED UP FAT CATS who have stuffed BILLIONS of dollars into their coffers – in their childrens coffers – in their family member coffers – will they ever see the REAL AMERICA and by the time they are shoveling they can return to Washington or whereever else they came from long enough to pack up their personal belongings as they need to be interviewed for their roles in violating the RICO Statutes which is CONSPIRACY TO DEFRAUD the American Taxpayer. Then they can trade their shovel ready skills for license plate making skills.
That is CHANGE I CAN BELIEVE IN!
Nuff said.
