Tea Party Congressman Hits Sharpton: ‘What’s Your Income?’

Representative Tim Huelskamp (R-KS) appeared on "Politics Nation" where Al Sharpton tried to turn the conversation to social justice. “Is it fair that millionaires pay a lower tax rate than their own secretaries,” Sharpton asked, only to be slammed by the Congressman that Sharpton's statistics were not true according to the IRS.

The question for the left is never what anyone makes, the only question that is important is what conservatives (eg, the "non-believers" in big government) pay in taxes (we all know democrats don't pay their taxes – hell, most of them don't have income and just feed at the government trough – just the way Ubama designed it to be).

Walker_Lewis   January 26th, 2012 - 12:53 pm

Why not have everyone pay 10% of their income regardless of how much they make? Wouldn't that be the fairest?

Instead we have the top 5% paying over half of all taxes and half of the population pays zero. Does that sound "fair" to anyone?

bubbatrunk   January 26th, 2012 - 12:55 pm

Sharpton is the biggest (well next to J.Jackson ) disgrace to the black people and the Democrapic party that there has ever been.

His lack of knowledge and discipline of voice is epic. Why he is paid at all is a mystery.

He is certainly at home at MSLSD

Taxes, are one can of worms Ol' Alphonse doesn't want to open up.

Why is Sharpton paying zero percent taxes? That's lower than a welfare dreg.

30%…… NOT A FACT! If she is paying 30% she needs to FIRE the H&R Block hack she has doing her taxes!

Has anyone seen this woman? Good God….Warren Buffett….. what a toad! Why is it that Democrats parade themselves around as victims when they are not even living in the same dimension as the rest of us? You would think that Warren Buffett's Secretary make $4.50 and hour and pays half of that in taxes. I want to know why he hasn't set her up with her own trust fund…… or has he? What other benefits does she not pay any taxes for?

A more fare tax system would be great! I am all for it. I think that those that don't feel they are paying enough should send a check to the US treasury right now or shut up. Bla-bla-bla go the democrats elite… Oh I'm am so uber rich it's just not fare…. wah…. Is anyone on the face of the planet this stupid…

Walker_Lewis   January 26th, 2012 - 1:11 pm

One small wish I do have is that if these politicians are willing to come onto these shows that they would leave the talking points behind. The Democrats do it all the time and it bothers me to no end.

Rep. Huelskamp was actually quite awkward at taking Big Al's question and turning it into an attack on Obama. He doesn't have to walk into the trap. He can rephrase the question or debate the premise or simply talk about the BIG difference between the tax rate and the EFFECTIVE tax rates people actually pay.

If conservatives are going to actually win in the marketplace of ideas we have got to start bringing a gun to a knife fight. This was a perfect opportunity to impress upon the very small audience of liberals who watch MSNBC the idea that millionaires do pay a lot more in taxes than secretaries. Instead, those viewers just see a "crazy" politician from flyover country trying to attack Obama. They aren't listening.

We have got to start talking about true principles and fight the socialist agenda toe to toe. I think that is why Gingrich is so popular right now. He doesn't rely on talking points and he is willing to actually discuss the issues and doesn't return to standard attack lines.

sistyugler1   January 26th, 2012 - 1:12 pm

FrankN2010   January 26th, 2012 - 1:14 pm

What if there was no tax? Would it be unfair for some to earn more than others? Why aren't Democrats calling for a flat tax on everything? That would be fair – we'd all pay the same rate.

ToddM   January 26th, 2012 - 1:18 pm

That statement from the race baiting Sharpton, who should be in jail for instigating the riots after Tawana Bradley, is exactly how Liberals/Marxists/Communists/Democrats see the tax code. They see it as a way to stick it to people. What the tax code is, and you liberals hold on to your seats, is to pay for essential government services. Not take from one to give to another. Or to not pay like a lot of Democrats do. They use it as a cudgel to bludgeon people with that they don't like. Nothing more. Sharpton can stick that bullhorn up his lazy butt.

SHARPTON IS SOOOOOOO STUPID WHO WOULD HIRE THIS IDIOT?????????????????????

Walker_Lewis   January 26th, 2012 - 1:26 pm

It's not a mystery. He extorts money from companies. He is a member of the diversity board at Walmart. The reason he is a member and gets paid a handsome fee to visit the company semi-annually and act like a pompous ass is because he will sue Walmart for discrimination on behalf of some Walmart-employed black lady in Nebraska who didn't ask for his help.

But Sharpton knows the cameras will be there at the press conference and so does Walmart. So they pay up and Sharpton pats them on the head and says "Good boy."

Who says racism is dead? It is alive and doing quite well.

This guy is right. Challenge them daily about their income …. and how much taxes THEY pay. As usual, Democrats are trying to deflect.

d106   January 26th, 2012 - 1:49 pm

Ok. One more time; the secretary only pays a higher rate in taxes because she is being tax on traditional income. The so called millionaire is only paying 15% because the "income" is dividend income and not the traditional income. Traditional income and dividend income is taxed differently. If the secretary has any dividend income then she too would pay only 15% on the dividend income. On the other hand if the millionaire has traditional income, i.e. a paycheck from an employer he/she would pay the usual tax rate on that because it is traditional income. Why in the world people either can't or refuse to understand this very simply rule is beyond me. And Sharpton knows this because I am certain he receives not only traditional income but also dividend income and those are taxed at different rates. Sharpton just like Obama are intentional misleading the people of this nation in order to stir hatred against wealthy people…………………..

Because the program’s algorithms do not have “the human touch”, it will methodically delete any suspect message. Take the word g-o-r-i-l-l-a…..try using it without dashes; and you will have it “moderated” or deleted instantly. Apparently it is one of those “code words” that Sheila Jackson Lee has warned us all about.

LOL

The question is misleading and pointless but for the constant media regurgitation of the point. We can only hope that the barrage of insulting punditry by the Democrats is not given much weight, but the lack of a consistent counterpoint to such drivel makes the Republicans look weak.

For those of you who think Sharpton and his ilk are stupid, they have been underestimated for years and still possess the will and power to make people do their bidding. We may disagree with most of what they say, but their message has kept them healthy for many years.

Obama Nobel Failure   January 26th, 2012 - 2:25 pm

That was PAINFUL TO WATCH!!!

Al and the Congressman were both clueless on the facts.

Why does Romney pay only 14%?
Because his income is derived from investments. Investments are NOT taxed at the same rate as payroll taxes. If you tax investments at the same rate as payroll taxes, it will stifle people investing in this country. People will take their money elsewhere. That is COMMON SENSE. Why couldn't the Congressman articulate that? Does he not know it?

The problem is that we have elected officials on both sides of the isle that don't even understand basic ecomomics!!

jdog   January 26th, 2012 - 2:26 pm

Disturbingly10ayshus   January 26th, 2012 - 2:28 pm

I can't watch it again… was that made clear?

Capt_Knuckles   January 26th, 2012 - 2:37 pm

DeathStalker74   January 26th, 2012 - 3:02 pm

I don't understand why this congressman doesn't make the point that Romney's initial tax on his income was probably the same as most people (of course, I mean those who actually pay taxes). The 14% he paid afterwards was on his dividends. So truth be told, he's actually been taxed TWICE!

scirel   January 26th, 2012 - 3:02 pm

That's right – If I go to a buffet with 10 people and the bill is $100, my "fair share" is $10, right?

I wonder how the Rev will feel in 2 years when he starts getting investment returns after investing the overspill of his his windfall salary and having that taxed at 15% so that in 10 years most of his income is from investments and his overall rate gets very close to 15%. I'm sure his tune will change then.

DrBobNM   January 26th, 2012 - 3:04 pm

F_This   January 26th, 2012 - 3:32 pm

DebbaLux   January 26th, 2012 - 7:11 pm

So frustrating to watch this video. Huelskamp was prepared but forgot to Teach that Romney's income is taxed at 15% because that is Capital Gains. Money you make by Risking your money to finance businesses.

I pay that 15% Capital Gains Tax every year on a modest money market from a marriage settlement. But, I don't get that money. Any dividends are rolled over. And, I stand a chance of Never seeing that money. When the market went down, the money it earned disappeared. But, I had to pay 15% on anything it earns every year. And, I am in Very Low tax bracket [read: very low income]. That money is my Safety Money. Not everyone who pays Capital Gains is Rich. Most aren't.

Comparing some "secretary" [who is obviously making more money than 99% of the people to be in a 28-35% tax bracket] with money earned in W2 salary to Capital Gains earnings is comparing apples to oranges.

We go on the defensive and forget to Teach.
