Syracuse University Professor Blames Feud With Bill O’Reilly for Tenure Denial

"In many academic circles, being attacked by Bill O'Reilly might be a badge of honor."

TV Newser: A Syracuse University professor is blaming his public feud with Bill O'Reilly as the reason he was denied tenure last week, reports Inside Higher Ed. "In many academic circles, being attacked by Bill O'Reilly might be a badge of honor," writes Inside Higher Ed. "A Syracuse University professor, however, charges that he was denied tenure last week in part because of the fallout over his on-air disputes with the Fox television star." Boyce Watkins appeared on CNN, among other outlets, several times after O'Reilly's comments about lunching at Sylvia's in Harlem. Throughout those discussion, Watkins called Fox News contributor Juan Williams an "eternal happy negro" and compared O'Reilly to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Typical liberal. You people don’t take responsibility for your own actions. Bill O’reilly ain’t got that much power over you worthless POS.

poundnails   May 18th, 2009 - 3:46 pm

Are we so stupid that Uncle Bill has to educate us to the fact that all of black America doesn’t carry old uzi’s and jack cars? Hey, Juan, next time you roll out of an Applebee’s let America know that all of white America doesn’t do meth and drive El Caminos.

What come around, goes around…’bro.

And, is this any different from Imus getting fired because of Al Sharpton?..I ask?

More La Shawn Barber and less of the tired old Uncle Toms for Uncle Joe (Joseph Stalin) please.

Get a life you looser…You should be denied tenure for being so politically knee-jerk sloppy in your attempts at doing a race-bating drive-by at O’Reilly.

To further justify the university’s tenure decision you AGAIN resort to blaming O’Reilly (Whitey) for your plight.

Mr Watkins, what a debased and craven attempt at pandering, I sincerely hope millions of other minorities (like myself) join in expressing a common disdain for what you represent.

You can tell Bill O’Reilly is lower class or he wouldn’t have ate in that place. As an upper class rich liberal I only eat at fancy places. Conservatives eat anywhere there is cheap food. Get a life Bill. My class of people look out for one another and we make sure we only have the best jobs and eat at the best places.

Hickok   May 18th, 2009 - 5:10 pm

American A$$hole,
“You can tell Bill O’Reilly is lower class or he wouldn’t have ate in that place.”
A lower class individual is one who uses ate instead of eaten, a$$wipe. And for the record, O’Reilly went there to meet with Al Sharpton, not because he was hungry.

Gandhi's Fist   May 18th, 2009 - 5:23 pm

I doubt O’Reilly had a thing to do with this “Professor’s” failed tenure bid.

There are a number of factors related to tenure. Effectiveness of instruction, participation with your collegium and publishing in peer reviewed venues or better yet a book. There is also the issue of having a terminal degree and sitting through at least 4 committees who review your application and either find or do not find in your favor. It is tough to become a professor.

Without knowing the facts, it would be hard to say if this fellow’s claim has a bit of merit. In this little snippet of him in a tet a tet, it is clear he’s not quite a fact finder and certainly launches into ad hominem at a moment’s notice.

As is the case typically with the left and extreme left-wing watch groups like media matters, they’re prone to taking dialogue out of context and cherry picking–hopefully–inflammatory rhetoric from their victims.

My guess–considering most every campuses are wildly left leaning–is that Syracuse had other, legitimate, reasons for relieving this fellow of his post. It may have even been the economy. Welcome to the real world Prof.

According to the “Boyces” of the world, you can degrade and defame Whites, but not the reverse. Where is his outrage about Jessie Jackson?

Stan   May 18th, 2009 - 6:03 pm

Calling this “prof” an idiot is an insult to genuine idiots….

Happy Negro   May 18th, 2009 - 6:31 pm

Gee, if you are black and conservative you are called a “Happy Negro”, “Uncle Tom”, “Stockhome Syndrome” and may other names. This guy has the typical victim status syndrome. EVERYTHING wrong with his life is because he is black and the racist whites are holding him back. I am sick of all this racism crap. Black Entertainment TV, The Black Better Business, The buy black campaign, the black caucus, the united negro college fund, the NAACP, the NBA. These black so called leaders are segregating the blacks of America. Why must you be called African American- were you born in Africa? are you not just AMERICAN? Why has there been so many name changes for blacks in America? Negros, African-American-black are you really that unhappy with your own skin color that you feel the need to redefine yourself every decade?

Bill O’Reilly can’t do anything to anybody except report on them and expose them. It’s these people’s own actions that result in the reactions. It’s called Karma, it’s called taking responsibility for your behavior, it’s called “what goes around comes around”, it’s called “cleaning up America, one action at a time”. There’s no room for hatred, no matter who you are. Now get some decency and try again for you vaunted superior position, and do it without doing it at the expense of other people whose shoes you aren’t worthy to lick! You can drink all the Kool-Aid you want to about Bill O’Reilly without ever watching him if you must, but Juan Williams is a very fair, honest and decent man, and you KNOW what kind of divisive agenda-ridden garbage you’re dealing with when someone goes after Juan also!

bupkus   May 18th, 2009 - 7:39 pm

Most of the same people who consider being attacked by Bill O’Reilly to be a badge of honor are the same people who consider being chased by the police or getting away with fraud to be a badge of honor anyway. Anyone who knows O’Reilly’s shows, beyond what Janeane Garofalo and Jon Stewart tell you to think about him, knows that he goes after criminals and people who are trying to ruin this country. Whenever that happens to be anyone to the left of center, then O’Reilly becomes the bad guy, and the criminal gets a pass because of anti-O’Reilly-based sympathy. It’s no different than the crowds forming in the ghetto and attacking the cops when the cops finally manage to pull over someone who just raped someone and mowed down pedestrians with their car. Whenever America finally wakes up and sees criminals for what they are, rather than automatically support and perpetuate their behaviors because they are told by the media to hate Bill O’Reilly, then America will get a lot better, faster! Until then, people like Letterman, Garofalo, Olbermann, Colbert and Stewart-Liebowitz should just shut up unless they have a better way of doing something good for the country other than criticizing the few who dare to try!

Gandhi’s Fist…excellent points, and could very well be the case.

And now he’s trying to roll the blame over to someone else…and possibly snag a CNN “advisor” position.
