Spat Between Producer & Director Leads to ‘Kanye Moment’ During Oscar Telecast

MTV: Producer Elinor Burkett borrowed a move from Kanye West's playbook at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards when she stormed the stage and interrupted her "Music by Prudence" collaborator Roger Ross Williams' acceptance speech for the Best Documentary Short award.

Salon interviewed Elinor Burkett: "What happened was the director and I had a bad difference over the direction of the film that resulted in a lawsuit that has settled amicably out of court. But there have been all these events around the Oscars, and I wasn't invited to any of them. And he's not speaking to me. So we weren't even able to discuss ahead of the time who would be the one person allowed to speak if we won. And then, as I'm sure you saw, when we won, he raced up there to accept the award. And his mother took her cane and blocked me. So I couldn't get up there very fast."

thats why i personally can’t stand watching these type of things everyone just makes a fool out themselves when the cameras are live (~_~)

Jim   March 8th, 2010 - 2:40 am

Wow! That’s one of the rudest things I’ve ever seen. Hey, Elinor. If you had a difference with the director that was settled out of court “amicably,” why did you have to storm up there and steal the once-in-a-lifetime spotlight form the guy whose direction MADE IT AN OSCAR WINNER?!

I’m still shocked that happened and feel so bad for Williams. Elinor Burkett is a world-class jerk. He should have shoved her aside and boxed her out. And if he wasn’t so utterly shocked, I’m sure he would have.

Oh, and Burkett will be accused of racism for what she did in 3 … 2 … 1 …

Salon: People are already saying you “pulled a Kanye.” What happened?

BURKETT: What happened was the director and I had a bad difference over the direction of the film that resulted in a lawsuit that has settled amicably out of court. But there have been all these events around the Oscars, and I wasn’t invited to any of them. And he’s not speaking to me. So we weren’t even able to discuss ahead of the time who would be the one person allowed to speak if we won. And then, as I’m sure you saw, when we won, he raced up there to accept the award. And his mother took her cane and blocked me. So I couldn’t get up there very fast.

By her own statement it sounds more like she is was upset that she didn’t get invited to those precious Oscar events. Maybe because she left a bad taste in some people’s mouths by her personality traits which were on display at the AA.

claspur   March 8th, 2010 - 5:50 am

Ditto Karen….. *sigh. I sure can’t either.

FastFacts   March 8th, 2010 - 8:35 am

Kanye West is an idiot, one of the few things I agree with the president about.

He has no place on stage or near a stage after that drunken act.

hey breitbart how about you post the whole video where you can hear them say that the award is for both of them and also where you can clearly see her get up from her seat and not be able to get to the stage? If you would show that it, this would be a non story because it is definitely not the same as Kanye West and Taylor Swift.

now she wears the STUPID lable   March 8th, 2010 - 9:55 am

she could have made the tv rounds and vent about how hurt
she is that she was not up there – thus solidifying what a
self-centered person she really is.

so she didnt get there in time. so he was incapable of
saying Thanks? it was pooor, poor theatre. shame on

@maine west
As a father of young adults, your statement only validates what I knew to be true. We didnt have a television until after 9/11 & about 2 years ago we turned off the cable.
I dont know who half these people are.
Your parents must be proud.

That poor guy. God bless him. He kept his cool. He was probably dreading just such a scene. I wonder who will be anxious to work with that woman in the future.

What another film about Blacks? Didn’t they have the other one with the fat ghetto mammy that Oprah made (even though she lives a life a privilege)?

Eric B   March 8th, 2010 - 1:37 pm

The real answer is……….STOP WATCHING THESE STUPID AWARD SHOWS THAT GIVE HOLLYWOOD IDIOTS A PODIUM TO LOVE THEMSELVES FROM!

The number of people who STILL watch this crap says a lot about the falling I.Q. levels in this country.

Hollywood Facts   March 8th, 2010 - 1:49 pm

This loud mouthed witch is nuts. I can’t imagine working with some loose cannon like this crazy person. Give her the hook.

Hollywood a-holes. Can’t stand any of these self-important, self-centered, limousine liberals. Haven’t watched the Oscars in years and have no plans to do so.

oh-security!!!   March 8th, 2010 - 2:30 pm

security needed to remove the crazy woman. the look on sone of the people face was priceless.

NewOrleansAnn   March 8th, 2010 - 3:05 pm

Who cares? Never heard of the movie, haven’t seen the Oscars in years, and don’t care who the weirdos in Hollywood give awards. Until they give a hoot about the U.S. Constitution, they can sit on it and rotate.

testicular man   March 8th, 2010 - 10:04 pm

Well what the hell do you expect from a left wing hack ex-reporter for the Miami Herald… Yes Elinor Burkett had the worst reputation as a biased reporter and quite frankly, was despised by everyone who worked there…

All these shows are a joke. I’m the greatest no I’m the greatest and so on. These people need to get real lives. In the big picture nothing any of them do means anything. Self serving, reassurance, ego lifting, it’s a joke. Americas real heros are never given a glance. But these clowns are our royalty. And we make fun of England.
