Security Camera: Glass Shatters as CA Officer Arrests Mentally Ill Man

AP: The troubles of the San Francisco Bay area's transit police went viral again as video hit the Internet showing what some claim was another use of excessive force. A cell phone video showing the violent arrest of a mentally ill passenger accused of being disruptive on a commuter train came less than a year after footage of an officer fatally shooting an unarmed man incited riots in the region. The Saturday night incident has prompted claims of police brutality and sent Bay Area Rapid Transit officials scrambling to address yet another public relations nightmare.

That cop did nothing wrong. He ends up bleeding but he’s abusing? Only in San Fran!

The cop got cut?   November 24th, 2009 - 10:34 am

So why was it necessary to slam the guy’s head against the glass?

k train   November 24th, 2009 - 11:42 am

I don’t think the glass was expected to break idiot! Besides, you respond to a complaint, you don’t know if the person is armed, he is obviously mentally unstable and you are not sure if he is dangerous or not. Most windows in an area like that are plexiglass, I’m sure the officer if asked will express regret at what happened, but really, why bother to get his side? The liberal media will just fill in the blanks and give guys like Van Jones more fuel for their respective fires. Just what they want.

Why is it when a cop tries to take control and lets the criminal know he has had it, they scream abuse, These cops put their lives on the line everyday.

There should be more broken windows.

Other   November 24th, 2009 - 1:27 pm

Watch the perps right arm. It goes up and hits the glass.

Eddie   November 24th, 2009 - 1:41 pm

Exactly right. The cop wasn’t being brutal. The lunatic’s arm broke the glass also. By the way, why doesn’t this window have safety glass?? I thought code (especially in an earthquake zone) called for it or at least plexiglas. Anyway, got the looney under control. Good job officer! Also kudos to those citizens who offered assistance to the officer. You don’t see that very much nowadays.

Cops continuously violate the Americans with Disabilities Act   November 24th, 2009 - 1:47 pm

Actually people, this cop will be lucky he keeps his job. The Americans with Disabilities Act specifically spells out protections guaranteed to the Mentally Ill. You can’t restrain a mentally ill person without a caseworker present. Where was the caseworker? If a caseworker can’t be present, then the officer must have training in recognition of mental illness. And don’t give me the “every criminal is mentally ill” crap. That is all bunk. I’m appalled the lady didn’t offer her scarf to aid in stopping the bleeding. She just blew off the request. Hag.

Eddie, you'd make a good Brownsuiter in Hitler's Germany   November 24th, 2009 - 1:52 pm

Wow Eddie, unbelievable. A person winds up bleeding all over the place and you say “the cop wasn’t brutal”. Sorry, but the cop didn’t have to take the guy all the way over to the glass. Give me a break people, plexiglass? ROFLMAO! If the cops in our cities would actually be physically fit, they wouldn’t struggle with people.

k train   November 24th, 2009 - 2:03 pm

actually, I have worked with people with disabilities, and cops are exempt from this law especially if the person is committing a crime or in this case, the officer is unaware of the status or diagnosis of the individual. Furthermore, mental illness is all to often lumped in with disabilities and the two are vastly different. A person with a diagnosis of say, Autism is in no way similar to a person diagnosed with ADHD. By the way “Eddie” you idiot, if the man wasn’t resisting, he wouldn’t have been taken over to the wall. And as far as the “physically fit” comment, I’m sure you would have been able to take him down soft as a feather without an issue, right? Gimme a break!

snowjob   November 24th, 2009 - 3:55 pm

Since when have we referred to drunk, unruley, and irrational behavior as being “mentally ill”???

b.s.

Chris   November 24th, 2009 - 4:42 pm

Since when is “drunk” mentally ill? Stupid liberals.

jbone   November 24th, 2009 - 7:51 pm

…this retard got off lucky.. if there hadn’t been any witnesses, the oakland police might of just tazered the guy into unconsciuosness (then planted some crack or a stolen gun on him)…

Looks like this cop is a Brownsuiter with an attitude   November 24th, 2009 - 8:47 pm

actually, I have worked with people with disabilities, and cops are exempt from this law especially if the person is committing a crime or in this case, the officer is unaware of the status or diagnosis of the individual.<<< You must be a Janitor in a mental institution then. Law enforcement officers are in NO WAY exempt from the law. If this person on the subway was a common criminal, then why does the headline state he was mentally ill? I know the exact wording of the Americans with Disabilities Act. If someone is diagnosed with chronic mental illness, then they are immediately termed "disabled". This cop was out of line. A good lawyer will have this Brown Suiter fired. There are thousands of excellent Civil Rights attorneys in the Oakland area just because of the cops.

danglingjohnson   November 24th, 2009 - 10:13 pm

I want that cop’s autograph. That fool needed his ass kicked real bad. That cop didn’t know he was a supposed retard, all he knew was that punk was terrorizing innocent people on the subway.

BB, CLEAN UP THE CENSORING APPARATUS   November 25th, 2009 - 5:19 am

BB, PLEASE STRAIGHTEN OUT YOUR DEFECTIVE CENSORING MECHANISM!!!!! THERE WAS NOTHING “FOUL” OR “POLITICALLY INCORRECT” IN OUR POST, BUT, DESPITE SUBMITTING 3 TIMES, IT STILL IS NOT APPEARING. WHY??

mossberg   November 28th, 2009 - 3:24 pm

I think It’s quite irritating that the public still refuse to acknowledge that the police are nothing but a bunch of thugs, thugs that you pay for and support no less . clearly the cop pushed his head into the window causing it to break. Then running to the cowards rescue when they see him bleeding, SO WHAT!!!! He did that to himself people. Would they have cared if the other guy was the one cut and bleeding? As far as I’m concerned let the swine bleed out.
