Why not the Fair Tax? The gov’t mails everybody a check for the amount of taxes you would pay to live above the poverty level. Then anything you purchase above that level you pay a tax on. It makes perfect sense and will attract new investment in our country.
Why not? Because if this were the case and the people voted to limit gov’t to only spend what revenues it collected then gov’t power would be in the hands of the people and our elected representatives don’t want to give up their power.
Having seen this live yesterday, poor old Steve Liesman, standing in front of the White House like the bootlicking, toady and Hussein syncophant he is, was overwhelmed by Santelli. Liesman, in my opinion, is why Charlie G. left CNBC. He just couldn’t take Liesman’s BS, excuse-making, spinning, misinformation, and lies by omission, any longer. In my opinion.

If you send a $1T stimulus through the wheels of the government, only about $500M at most could be used for “shovel ready” or otherwise projects. Why? IF they can stick to a plan of fiscal austerity (a big IF considering their performance from 2001-2007), that will eliminate – not create – jobs as thousands of government employees are cut loose. And what are they going to cut? Axing some $5 billion program isn’t going to get the job done. A balanced budget will require big cuts in our most lavish expenditure: the military. And we know the so-called conservatives aren’t going to do that.
If they cut taxes in an attempt to boost individual and/or corporate spending, the deficit will rise. If they just pander to the base by babbling about freedom, nothing at all will happen.
If you try thinking through our current economic situation, you’ll see there are no easy answers.

Wanda, as conservative as I am. I am also a realist. If the conservatives win going forward it will require a lot of sacrifice on everyone’s part. We Americans are so used to being spoiled and comfortable. BUT I believe if we, collectively, begin to see and admit how we have made sooooooooo many mistakes on both sides of the isle(with all honesty), then there’s still a chance that we can save our country. In my humble opinion, we must begin with the sanctity of each human LIFE.
There is no such thing as a “fair” tax. Any tax by it’s very nature sucks money form the economy. So, what is more realistic is a flat tax system without deductions. Example: Fix income tax at 15% of gross income. This would include Social Security and Medicare. If a worker earns 10,000/year he/she pays 1,500/year in tax. If one earns 100,000/yr, he/she pays 15,000 in taxes. This way everyone pays according to their economic means. Imagine the financial savings in paperwork alone.
If we want industry to return and outsourcing of jobs to cease, decrease Corp tax from 35% to 20%. If we want greater employment, stop congress from continuing the giveaway work visa program for foreign nationals and enforce existing immigration laws.
The problem here is in Obama’s “racial roots”. He was bought up on “handouts” and thinks this is normalcy. He never paid one dollar for tuition, someone else paid it. So you see when America says we have to get the government to “stop spending”, he doesn’t understand why because he has never had to stop spending other people’s money.

mike russom- you are correct on your breakdown of the spending. however, what you fail to note is that social security was paid for and continues to be paid for by people throughout their working life, involuntarily i might add. it was the democrats who over the years took the money (theft) paid in to social security to pay for the other programs you cite enabling generations of the mostly black minority population to grow up in homes where no one worked. this was done deliberately by the democrats to keep minorities poor and dependent and to secure their vote. now they are attempting to do the same with the hispanic population. as for medicare, that is also not an entitlement. about $100. is taken out of the social security check monthly to cover a portion of doctor visits, etc. plus a co-pay at each visit of $15-$25. because of the way the government has skewed doctor fees and other costs, it is necessary for medicare recipients to get supplemental insurance from private carriers which costs $300-$400 per month plus another $50 per month to defray rx costs. also, it should be noted that even though we paid taxes on earned income while working and paying in to social security, we are also taxed on our social security income. double taxed if you will. for that we can thank that great statesman bill clinton and the sex poodle lying crook al gore. both of whom should be in jail. so you can see that social security/medicare recipients are not getting a free ride and are still contributing through taxes each year. obama plans through new taxes and the “so-called” health care reform crap to drive all of us into poverty. that is his idea of equality to put us all on the level of the people who took government hand outs and never worked a day in their life. Hey old man, I don't think anyone has a problem with thousands of government employees are cut loose. Public goods such as education, and safety should be saved. Most other programs should be cut, so that the money can go back to the people and companies that actually earned it. That way they can continue to develop new ideas and projects that people actually demand, which will lead to a better society for those that are actually willing to work for it and not for those that want to sit on the sideline and criticize.
