Short selling played a large role in the ‘08 crash. Essentially selling a stock you don’t own then purchasing it later at a lower price, pocketing the difference. The ‘uptick’ rule was ended about a year before the crash. Mark to market also helped push bank stocks downward once housing price began to deflate. On top the 1977 Community Reinvestment Act, accelerated by Bill Clinton to funnel money to Democrat groups and the party, then put on steroids by Acorn street activists after a successful court case by Obama. Once rules limiting short-selling were removed George Soros, Sovereign Wealth Funds, and Goldman Sachs hired ‘boiler room’ staff and began to attack US financial stocks. Trillions were lost, but is it any wonder Soros made billions over the same time period?
It is laughable Democrats are blaming Republicans for the crash. Barack Obama himself blocked efforts by the Bush Administration to investigate short selling, ending mark to market, and to reign in Freddie and Fannie several times during his short stint in the Senate. In other words Obama is more to blame for the crash than the former President. Central characters in this debacle: Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Senator Feinstein, and Senator Schumer.
This is going to come out over the next couple of weeks, utterly smashing Obama’s attempt to be a ‘populist’ over this issue. According to Bloomberg, the two companies owned or guaranteed about 75% of all residential mortgage loans made last year and accounted for more than $5 trillion in mortgages, nearly 60% of the total market.
Of all the companies bailed out by the federal government, mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are shaping up as the deepest money pits. A close look at their past and recent financial filings shows why their losses continue to mount.
Together the two firms have already tapped $125 billion from government lifelines and the Congressional Budget Office predicts they ultimately will drain $380 billion. That would far exceed the final tabs for rescuing the big banks, the automakers or even insurance behemoth American International Group (AIG).
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will be required to increase financing to low- and moderate-income home buyers and to increase their commitment to underserved areas under new rules by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
HUD is requiring the two government-sponsored enterprises to make 56 percent of their mortgage activities in loans written to low- and moderate-income borrowers by 2008, up from the current goal of 50 percent. They will have to increase mortgage activity in underserved areas from 36 to 39 percent by 2008.
To meet the new goals, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae would have to purchased 400,000 more qualifying home loans during the four-year period, HUD said in a statement.
