The seat was held by Harold Ford (before he attempted to become a reverse carpetbagger but was roundly slapped down by the Democrats in New York state. Cohen is as liberal as he needs to be and as black as he needs to be. One of his r3cent stunts was to apologize for slavery from the floor of the House.

The totally crooked and ignorant mayor of Memphis, Willie Herenton, has decided that the 9th should have a black representative, and he is challenging Cohen in the August primary. As a 45 year old gay man that has never had a girlfriend (except the time my mother likes to remind me about in kindergarten), I find no evidence to his words. Just because someone is “gay” or a certain “race” does not mean they we were not brought up with values that best serve America. I honorably served my county in the military, saw a “witch hunt” when there was no “don’t ask don’t tell,” and am completely against same sex marriage for reasons from a stand point that the left promotes (cradle to the grave)–ask me later to justify my reasons. My main point is that there is a whole broad spectrum across American, me included, that support the Tea Party movement. It is not about hate to any one group or race. It is about the core principles that made this country great, and all members that support the “American way of life” (gay, hetro, black, white) it doesn’t matter. What matters is keeping America great.

H.R. 4439, the Tobacco Tax Parity Act of 2010 was introduced on January 13, 2010 and would raise the tax on pipe tobacco 775% from $2.8311 to $24.78 per pound.
Introduced by Representatives Steve Cohen (Dem., TN) and Lloyd Doggett (Dem., TX), it has been referred to the House Ways and Means Committee of which Mr. Doggett is a member.
I am writing to express concern about this bill.
I want you to vote NO to H.R. 4439.
This bill punishes pipe smokers and retail tobacconists. It will destroy an industry of pipe craftsmen, small farmers, tobacco blenders and retailers. Pipe smoking is an historical, time-honored tradition in America that goes back to colonial days.
This is nothing more than an attempt to rope in taxes from roll-your-own cigarette tobacco. The roll-your-own industry has re-labeled cigarette tobacco as pipe tobacco to be taxed at a much lower rate.
This is not the way to fix that problem. For those of us that enjoy real pipe tobacco, this is unfair. A tax increase of 775% on anything is ludicrous. This will kill many small businesses and an historical tradition.
Many honorable people smoked a pipe including; State Senator Millicent Fenwick, President Gerald R. Ford, General Douglas McArthur, Albert Einstein and many more.
The signers of this petition are telling the congressmen and senators that we want them to vote NO on H.R. 4439.

Real American, I feel your pain. How any government can take profit from someone’s addiction is prima facie evidence of their hostility to citizens. In the old days, a long time ago, I hand rolled my own smokes with Three Castles tobacco. It was absolutely pure and loaded with nicotine. It had to be shipped from Virginia to England and then reimported to the US. Still, it was much cheaper than buying factory cigs.
I don’t have any qualm with pipe smokers or any other tobacco users as long as I don’t have to smell it or be around it.
Is there some chance of you growing your own tobacco or importing it? I know it was uncomfortable to quit tobacco when I did it but over time it just goes away. Speaking of which, yep, time for Cohen to go away. Let him try and make a living practicing law for his constituency!! Probably as a public defender. But, WTF, somebody has to do it. His folks deserve a really talented lawyer just like him.
