Reason.tv: Your Flight Has Been Delayed – And It’s Washington’s Fault

Reason.tv: "The air traffic control system in the United States is technologically obsolete," says Robert W. Poole, Jr., director of transportation studies at Reason Foundation. "This model is basically the same model that we have used since the beginning of air travel." The technology the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) uses to navigate $200 million jets is less advanced than the GPS technology drivers use to navigate $20,000 cars.

It is a travesty that the Federal Government has let our Air Traffic Controllers run the entire Air Traffic in the United States on a “wing and a prayer” with such obsolete technology currently being used in the control towers throughout the Country. If the status quo continues unabated you will see more and more of these types of problems happening, needless to say. It is on the shoulders of the FAA to provide a “safe” environment for air travel and this is one area where “skimping” to save a buck doesn’t apply. The American people, and people in general, should be the number one priority and concern for the FAA when it comes to making air travel safe, efficient, and modernized. Since currently the FAA “lacks” in all those areas is it any wonder that people hesitate to fly at all or why the number of people who do fly has dwindled significantly since 9/11/2001 and continues to dwindle to this very day? Something definitely needs to be done, although every time a significant change to make things better has been attempted it always loses out to Congressional opposition. That’s why it is critically important that the American people vote OUT Congressmen and Senators that have their own “self interest” at heart instead of the American people whom they were elected to serve. And then vote IN those candidates whose record(s) show that they are first of all “competent” and have produced “good” works while in office or in public life and have gotten ‘results’ i.e. gotten things done, both for America and its citizens, and that have America’s best interest at heart, instead of their own pocketbook and/or re-election bid succeeding.

So, what makes us think the government will do any better running our healthcare?

Bill2   November 20th, 2009 - 3:10 am

The FAA via ATC don’t “navigate jets”….it separates them.

The air space should be privatized into a for profit corporation. Each citizen would be issued 100 shares. After owning the shares for 25 years, and being older than 65, one would be entitled to share in the profits of the corporation.

Each airline, general aviation, NASA, or military would pay for the use of the airspace. Demand for slots at major hubs would determine the price. Busy times would cost more. Contracts for multi years of use could be bought. A market could be established for trading contracts.
