Dramatic Footage: Near Riots at UCLA Over Proposed 32% Tuition Hike

Daily Bruin: A crowd of more than 500 demonstrators rushed Covel Commons on Wednesday to protest a proposed 32 percent student fee increase. They were met by dozens of university police, some of whom were outfitted in riot gear. At one point, protesters broke through police barricades that surrounded the main entrance to Covel. Officers responded to the stampede of students and union workers by extending the metal barricades around the entrance and using nightsticks and Taser guns to force the crowd back.

These kids are TOTALLY mislead in attacking the Board of Regents. The REAL cause of this proble is Sacramento’s ineptitude. The Board of Regents is just trying to make sure they still have a school to attend, and because of the $21 Billion problem the State government has caused, this is the only way…

The REAL protests should be in Sacramento, NOT at Covel Commons. WAKE UP!

The contradictions of California are ‘coming home to roost’ in the immortal words of Obama’s spiritual mentor.

California has taxed and spent and taxed and spent and regulated the state to fiscal death. Now the rich have fled, manufacturing has fled, companies that need electricity have fled, anyone with assetts has fled.

The remaining tax base can’t support the bloated services the voters have given themselves. These spoiled brats want the belagured taxpayers of California to continue to over subsidize their education, but the money just isn’t there. It’s a zero sum game at this point. If tuition isn’t cut at UC, then welfare will be cut, or section 8 will be cut, or free medical care will be cut.

It is fun (from afar) to watch the absurd contridictions of the wefare state collapse on itself. The future of Aztlan is seen in this video!

Steve   November 19th, 2009 - 1:48 pm

Well stated RW.

GG   November 19th, 2009 - 1:48 pm

RW,

I was raised BLOCKS from UCLA, but, I agree with you 1000%. As goes California, so goes the country. Somehow this state was the 7th largest economy on the planet, now $21+ billion in debt. Sick, huh? United States of Obamastan will become the same in a matter of years on its current trajectory, too.

JD MIX   November 19th, 2009 - 1:51 pm

And these kids are supposed to be ‘well educated’ and the future of our country…
#1) They were probably NOT educated enough to realize that voting for an Obama-nation would result in raised fees and taxes.
#2) At least they ARE educated enough to know that raising fees and taxes is BAD.
#3) One would have to expect that the liberal-owned education system would begin to implode on itself for the indoctrination and propoganda it spews contrary to common sense, not to mention its over-arching denial of God and country and the values that are the glue of a stable and free democratic republic.
#4) This is only the beginning…

arby   November 19th, 2009 - 1:52 pm

…and the worst is soooooo yet to come… waaaaaaaaaaaaa

Matt S   November 19th, 2009 - 1:52 pm

Students are out at protest, but I feel they many do nut understand WHY the public system needs to raise addition revenue. It is because they are broke due to the numerous social programs in the state of California. They should be protesting unsustainable government spending in Sacramento.

Luckily I got out of the CSU system prior to a 25% hike, but unluckily when the job market is flat.

This is just one of the first symptoms of why the welfare state cannot be sustained. I fear more and more for the state of California and the Union.

This is just the beginning. The income tax increase in my city was defeated in Nov. but the teachers still want an increase in pay and benefits. Teachers unions throughout the educational system are to blame for the downward trend in education in America. The state, federal city and county gvernment are goig to collapse from the weight of government workers wanting more and more from the private sector. We all can’t work for the government and expect to get raises when most people are taking cuts or losing their jobs completely.

$14K for UC tuition is a joke, and $2500 more still makes it a joke. Private colleges cost 2 – 3 times as much. If these students can’t pay off a few thousand more dollars in loans after they graduate then you seriously have to question the majors they are selecting and the courses they are taking. Which you should. Chicano studies prepares you for nothing except more time living off taxpayer dole.

Cops clearly trying to provoke the crowd – he should be arrested for inciting a riot.

But the truth is college has become a bubble with more and more people paying for more and more “education” where very little is actually taught but just going through the program is viewed as an achievement….until more and more people realize the diplomas are nearly meaningless.

trinket59   November 19th, 2009 - 2:07 pm

Most of these students probably campaigned and voted for this administration. I bet if you asked them the majority support “free” health care. Demonstrates the disconnect of many in the country between services and how they are financed.

The worst problem with CA legislature is their unwillingness to cut any funding/jobs/pensions of SEIU government workers who are their constituents.

While I agree with the assessment that the students are blaming the wrong people. Colleges are creating their own “bubble” by growing administration costs beyond the increase in student population and inflation.

I believe it’s just a matter of time before protests like this get violent. I’ll venture a guess that the vast majority of these protesters had a liberal bent. Unlike the so called “tea party” protesters who attended very peaceful events, these liberal protesters are but a small spark away from getting very ugly.

Gandhi's Fist   November 19th, 2009 - 2:14 pm

What did they expect, the schools teach civil disruption in every political science class. Lefty professors constantly hammering about the benefits of communism and socialism and change via revolution. I wonder, who many of those kids were–in fact–students of science, engineering, chemistry, math, physics or any other useful major? Looks to me like a bunch of “African studies”, “education”, “general liberal arts” students.

Nice to see the dog bite itself for a change.

Common Sense   November 19th, 2009 - 2:14 pm

Legalize and Tax Marijuana and use the proceeds to fund cheaper public school.
Any Marijuana outlet that sells within a mile of a college should be charged a
larger tax with the knowledge that additional money will be applied directly
to reduced tuition. If you choose between binge drinking on campus and a stoned student
I would say a stoned student would be much less destructive to society and himself.

LEGALIZE AND TAX MARIJUANA AND STOP THE MADNESS

demdicks   November 19th, 2009 - 2:15 pm

Why the surprise? This is liberalism on full display. What is the “real”, base cost of a university tuition?, we may never know. There is no current “true” cost because the subsidies, grants and other set asides and freebies obfuscate the numbers so they cannot be recognized accurately. For every athletic, minority, gender, orientation, perpetually “aggrieved” group getting grants and giveaways there is a loss of perspective on the true supply-demand relationship that adds up to the base cost of education, books, housing and other ancillary items. If ALL of these subsidies were terminated tomorrow the cost of education would almost immediately begin to plummet due to true competition without government buffers, we should give it a try, NOW!!!

Barack Obama   November 19th, 2009 - 2:17 pm

tombt   November 19th, 2009 - 2:20 pm

Excellent points RW. The commies had to use walls and barbed wire to prevent people from fleeing. In this country, when taxes become too confiscatory, the people – and corporations – are free to flee as they are doing from California and NY. Many corporations have fled the country entirely. What we are witnessing is the rage of the dependent class. To get votes, politicians over the years have promised too much and now the economy is collapsing as those promises have become too costly to sustain.

BECC   November 19th, 2009 - 2:20 pm

Jeff fromTO   November 19th, 2009 - 2:26 pm

Why the large tuition increase? Because state budgets are being cut which includes funding for the UC’s and the Cal State’s. Why is the state cutting budgets and funding? Because the state’s tax revenue has plummeted. Why has the state tax revenue plummeted? Because the liberal-mindset of taxing BIG business and making it harder to do business in Cali has caused a mass migration of businesses leaving the state….and in its path are hard-working, employable, citizens of the state leaving as fast as they can!

This is a novel idea but why not cut the salaries of the top professors and administrators, something they claim has been done but when you cut $1 out of a seven digit salary. It really doesn’t do anything for the bottom line. Cut the top salaries and keep the lower professors working and students from having to pay more and possibly scarying them from going to school.

So also can be done with all the states that are in trouble. Cut the top salaries of those in the government and keep the lower workers employed.

This same theory works with Congress. Why should they get a pay raise, which they received this year when the nation is hurting and everyone else is getting their salaries cut. Instead of keeping their status quo, why not cut their pay as well. You have over 200 millionaires in Congress, why do they need any money. Then cut their petty cash which was also increased this your 4 times.

Another “dirty little secret” about the reasoning behind this is that ILLEGAL ALIENS who claim residency in California are CHARGED LOWER TUITION RATES THAN OUT-OF-STATE AMERICAN CITIZENS COMING TO UCLA FROM OTHER STATES to attend college!

Where do you think the money has to come from to pay for these ILLEGAL students (many of whom MUST have considerable “financial aid” to EVEN BE ABLE TO AFFORD TO GO TO UCLA? – and, I might also point out, are being admitted WITH LOWER TEST SCORES AND GPA’S THAN “NON-MINORITY” STUDENTS SEEKING ADMISSION THERE!)

Because UCSB is an unaccountable criminal mafia organization where I endured four years of near-constant hostility in the form of verbal and visual abuse, physical threats, an assault, bullying, mobbing, and finally getting unjustly fired followed by being sabotaged and libeled into permanent unemployment, I held little hope that I would be rehired by the UCSB crime family.

Although I guessed correctly that the unacceptable criminal UCSB mafia would refuse to even grant a telephone interview when I applied a few years ago for the newly created $100K/year executive position of Associate Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services, I applied anyway because the position was purposefully left mostly undefined and it provided a great opportunity to present my visionary ideas for how to rehabilitate and redeem the UCSB criminal mafia organization. I want the record to show that at least one good person correctly predicted the current crisis and attempted to head it off with an excellent visionary proposal. (I did the same thing for the State of California when I presented a detailed radical but workable engineering proposal for California that would have had us in the black instead of the economic degradation experienced under the Zionist mafia-installed Arnold)

It doesn’t take an MBA or a business genius to recognize that the key to UC prosperity is increased revenue via an increased enrollment of diverse satisfied customers willingly paying a reduced amount for a product of increased cutting-edge quality that results in greater overall income, endowments and prestige to the University. My proposal was to lead the experimental project to better utilize 21st Century communications technology to liberate undergrads from the bricks and mortar of a retarding unstimulating stationary campus that allowed the UCSB campus to be converted solely into a Grad School and revenue-generating business park while permitting UCSB undergrads to trek around the World between UCSB-owned or controlled hostels through the best places of the World while earning their degrees.

I proposed a variant combination of Netflix, Microtel, tourist hostels and MIT’s online university business models to provide superior, profitable, exciting and stimulating undergraduate educations to Californians, out-of-staters, international students and students of non-traditional age.

Instead of tuition increases, reductions in service, layoffs, furloughs, pay-cuts and the inevitable default of the retirement system, UCSB could be leading UC toward greater prosperity, greater support to graduate research programs and making a significant improvement in American student social awareness and ability to compete internationally.

Instead UCSB mafia hired Ron Cortez to supervise the UCSB campus food waste composting project. Hip, Hip, Hooray.

UCSB criminal mafia is, indeed, a mediocrity mill.
Where there is no vision, people perish.

Kevin   November 19th, 2009 - 2:46 pm

This is but small taste of what is to come. Gerald Celente forcasts a college bubble burst. The fact that Obama wants to take over ALL student loans should be a red flag. It is being proposed that the kids can have free college education, as long as they WORK for the government for ten years afterward.(and it will only cost the students their soul)

It is disgusting to know that according to a in depth study; http://tinyurl.com/yl9tbys
Illegals cost the people of California 9 billion a year, 7.7 billion of that, is just from education.

With a 21 billion dollar deficit, they could turn things around quickly by arresting, then throwing out all illegals. Furthermore, they would not be in the position that they are if they simply enforced the laws currently on the books.

Tree huggin’ libs, don’t bother with the race card, it no longer works

USA on the Brink   November 19th, 2009 - 2:46 pm

But, didn’t Obama promise to pay the mortgage, to fix the car, and to pay for the groceries? Didn’t he promise that the government would pay for college tuition? “Out of his stash”, as I recall one supporter saying.

I guess not. In fact, I recall him saying that we would all have to make sacrifices. After all, he is sacrificing our freedom on the altar of universal health care, and our nation on the altar of his majestic reign.

By the way, this looks like a “riot”, not a “riot almost”.

Look, kids, the Democrats hold both houses and the White House. You need to direct your anger towards your representatives, your senators, your president, and do it at the ballot box.

These are the same students that criticize the TEA parties protesting TAX hikes. They really need to educate themselves on how their education is funded.

I would like to place Janet Napolitano our unqualified head of DHS right in the middle of these peaceful protesters. She will be safe as nobody was carrying a bible nor an NRA sticker and thank God nobody had a Tea Bag sign.

I noticed the corrupt dinosaur media made no comparison regarding the peaceful Tea Party protesters vs the jungle mentality left wing union scum protesters shown on this video.

We know who the real enemy within is and they unfortunately are winning. Our schools and media give cover to the progressives. If they did not give cover they could not hide the fact that all of documented history proves progressives are always on the wrong side.
