If tuition isn’t cut at UC, then welfare will be cut, or section 8 will be cut, or free medical care will be cut.

Students are out at protest, but I feel they many do nut understand WHY the public system needs to raise addition revenue. It is because they are broke due to the numerous social programs in the state of California. They should be protesting unsustainable government spending in Sacramento.

Luckily I got out of the CSU system prior to a 25% hike, but unluckily when the job market is flat.

This is just the beginning. The income tax increase in my city was defeated in Nov. but the teachers still want an increase in pay and benefits. Teachers unions throughout the educational system are to blame for the downward trend in education in America. The state,federal city and county gvernment are goig to collapse from the weight of government workers wanting more and more from the private sector. We all can’t work for the government and expect to get raises when most people are taking cuts or losing their jobs completely.

I believe it’s just a matter of time before protests like this get violent. I’ll venture a guess that the vast majority of these protesters had a liberal bent. What did they expect, the schools teach civil disruption in every political science class. There is no current “true” cost because the subsidies, grants and other set asides and freebies obfuscate the numbers so they cannot be recognized accurately. For every athletic, minority, gender, orientation, perpetually “aggrieved” group getting grants and giveaways there is a loss of perspective on the true supply-demand relationship that adds up to the base cost of education, books, housing and other ancillary items. If ALL of these subsidies were terminated tomorrow the cost of education would almost immediately begin to plummet due to true competition without government buffers, we should give it a try, NOW!!!

This is a novel idea but why not cut the salaries of the top professors and administrators, something they claim has been done but when you cut $1 out of a seven digit salary. It really doesn’t do anything for the bottom line. Cut the top salaries and keep the lower professors working and students from having to pay more and possibly scarying them from going to school.

So also can be done with all the states that are in trouble. Cut the top salaries of those in the government and keep the lower workers employed.

This same theory works with Congress. Why should they get a pay raise, which they received this year when the nation is hurting and everyone else is getting their salaries cut. Instead of keeping their status quo, why not cut their pay as well. You have over 200 millionaires in Congress, why do they need any money. Then cut their petty cash which was also increased this your 4 times.

I have been waiting for this sort of thing to happen. The increase in education spending in this Country for the last 15 years is STAGGERING!
The schools K-12, and higher ed have kicked and screamed, and sued the taxpayers for more and more funding. And have gotten what they asked for.
Im in Kansas, my father is a state legislator for over 12 years. In Kansas alone education consumes over 70% of the State budget. Education spending has increased here from approx $800 million in 92 to close to $4 billion now. With little increase in enrollment. In California Im sure that education spending has far outpaced their ability to pay for, and look where that gets you. The Universities only way to pay their hugely inflated expenses now that the State coffers are empty is to (TRY) and charge the students the difference. Let the students see what the scools have been up to. When the State pays for everything no one knows the amount of increases going on.

So the schools have to learn the lesson of Capitalism instead, just like all those “payers” had to inorder to be able to pay in the first place: offer a product, charge a fee with enough profit to maintain competitive value and product integrity.

All the “takers” are angry that they’re now being expected to pay for the product they have come to demand, because many of the “payers” have left the state and the state isn’t creating more, due to those high taxes, high prices, overall degenerating conditions.

Nancy Pelosi, for example, her preposterous Leftism is a prime example of how stupid the Democrats in CA are: they only know how to bleed off taxpayers through ever increasing demands for more.

And the CA State Legislature (Sacramento) is about as Far Left and as Far Marxist as ever was.

Things have not changed much. I didn’t see any S.W.I.N.E. The LA TImes reported a few years ago on students who went to Santa Monica CC for two years then went to UCLA and compared their scholastic results at the end of their junior year with students who entered UCLA as freshman. This was a comparison of the junior year only. The Santa Monica CC students did better on average than those students entering UCLA as freshman.

I’m a native ex-Californian, and a product of that state’s higher education system myself. I saw the handwriting on that wall several years ago and moved myself and my business to capitalism-friendly Tennessee. Whenever I have to go back to the Golden State on business it saddens me deeply to see the all of the economic and social destruction left in the wake of the liberal ideologues who have driven it to the brink of collapse.

What you are witnessing is the US becoming a 3rd world country. This is about a 32% hike in the student fee not tuition. The education/indoctrination system has been pushing college down kids throats for years now. They make it sound like you have no future if you don’t get a formal education.

Well, my husband does not have a college degree and he makes 2x the national average salary & we have primo benefits worth thousands.

The future is going to be in hands on industries. There is a major shortage of maintenance & trade workers. Train for a hands on trade like plumbing or electrical work. They are a dying breed since so many kids have gone to college & instead are trained for white collar jobs.

Well, those white collar jobs do not exist any longer. If you are going to get formal training, go to a trade school.

I went to University of California, and although it was expensive, its voluntary attendance. Don’t want it, don’t go. City Colleges and State universities have open doors for everyone. Loan applications are available as well if UC is the only option for them.

California is what happens when you try a provide every entitlement you can think of without first identiying where you are gong to fund it from..

California has the highest welfare payments.
When you apply, they pay you for a couple of months before they even check if you’re eligible.

They routinely give welfare recipients cost of living increases and give the government employees either a zero raise or furlough days.

They tax businesses to the brink. Most big business has relocated out of state, taking jobs and a huge tax base. Small business scratches to survive being over-regulated. If they require all employers to provide Obamacare, many many more small businesses will fold up.

They will do nothing about illegals, even to the point of trying to give them CA drivers licenses.

The state allows illegals to pay in-state tuition for college while requiring out-of-state U.S. citizens to pay more than twice the in-state rate.

Ca pays higher gas prices because of the lunatic environmental requirements making our gas a particular grade, easy to manipulate in the market.

Our public schools pay billions to teach the illegals. It doesn’t work as 2/5th of LA kids dropout. LA is 70% illegals.

So, you have massive entitlements, high prices, few jobs, no water, high taxes and fees, businesses leaving the state, while illegals such the system dry and don’t pay a dime. Gee, you think the state MIGHT be in trouble?

(3) Remove all of the protesting students from campus, leaving only the students that are smart enough to realize that their taxpayer funded education is still a really good deal despite the increase in tuition.

Our tuition in GA was raised 33% this semester. The hourly rate did not increase. However, the minimum number of hours one is required to pay for was increased from 12 to 16. The average students math skills are not adequate to decipher this accounting nuance. Result? Students wondering why they don’t have enough money for baby food but not knowing why.

Rates have to be raised so that people like me can come to America and get good education. Just don’t raise the rates on hispanics. This was our country before the whites took it from us.

We shouldn’t waste our tax dollars on professors who don’t teach professional subjects, or don’t teach well at all. Medical, Dental, Engineering, Computer Science, these are majors that can earn money when you graduate. The idea of the well rounded education is passe’. 60 units of pablum before you start on a path and then the path leads nowhere is not worth 50 large. Many colleges and universities are just breeding pens. The young people are having fun, but they are wasting their time and our money. There are hundreds of thousands of lawyers. The average probably earns $45,000 a year, if that. How do you pay back the money? Maybe your parents took out a loan on their house so you could become what? Think about it. We are all being suckered over and over by something we want but don’t need. Do you need to go to the university. Can you get where you want to go with community college. Don’t be a sucker for the teaching establishment that turns out economists who can’t figure out inflation or deflation? Or go the MBA route so you can go to Wall Street to be a crook. Or shoot for the stars: go to work for the State of California as a tax collector. Let the rich put their money in these institutions so their kids can major in communications, or political science. Go to a state school take some science. Electrical engineering is a better bet than phys ed. The UC wants to charge a fortune so their professors can teach two classes of sociology 180 days out of the year, and have a couple of assistants to do all the work correcting papers bought off the internet all for $150,000 a year. Go to a private Optometrist School, spent a couple of years, and make me a new pair of glasses for $1000. No jobs you say so I will go to school. Walk away. They need bodies. They need people to take out Pell grants and other government grants and loans. Its a racket and you are feeding it. Supply and demand. If there is no demand, the price will come down.

Colleges have charged far too much money for far too long. Most universities are sitting on lots of money in the form of endowments. My heart goes out to the younger generation who are no indebted to banks to the tune of $80,000 when leaving a college. They are indentured servants to the banks or they can join the service to pay for their college and be indentured servants to the government. The jobs in this country are drying up quickly now. What are they going to do? Teenagers couldn’t even find work in fast food restaurants this past summer because adults had filled the roles in desperation.

I wish all college students would protest colleges/universities by abandoning them . If no students came the colleges would actually have to compete for students. For too long parents and students have agreed to take out giant loans to pay these corrupt institutions. Until the American public refuse to fork out obscene college tuition the colleges will continue to financially rape the students.

I have a relatively painless solution. On one hand a 32% tuition hike is a pretty big sticker shock. But, the state of California is bankrupt. California already has the highest net domestic migration rate so raising taxes is not an option. It will only serve to increase California’s high net domestic migration rate as American’s flee the Peoples High Taxed Republic.

So, California must cut spending. But, how do you offset 32% rate increase in tuition? You stop giving illegal aliens in state tuition. California can no longer afford the high costs of illegal immigration. If those students don’t want to see their tuition go up by 32% they better start protesting the Democrats policy of looking the other way when it comes to illegal immigration. Putting an end to illegal aliens receiving in state tuition is a great place to start.

You still seem to ignore the illegal problem and the direct relation to the costs that CA (taxpayers) must come up with and the similar policies that keep the states unemployment in a perpetual state of misery.

Nice to see so many people with the same view as I have insofar as the States that try to be everything to everyone (like the Obama-nation is trying to be) cannot afford to pay for it. The next big fight is to keep all pensions from being defined benefit pensions (like the teachers and many others get), which keep driving up the taxes. Expect many, many teacher strikes over the next few years, which at least will give a job and experience to those who take their places. The argument that being a teacher is not an easy job is not an argument I would make, its only that there are many others who have jobs that require education and training, that make a heck of a lot less than teachers do, and also don’t get the benefits (or job security) that teachers do. Teachers work hard (and many do a good job and while others do not) and deserve a fair pay, but they have to see that many others do too, and not expect that we can keep footing the bill for their raises every year when so many of us have gone several years without one (and have had hours cut to boot).

I am a non-traditional student who started my college education at a California community college. I took grants because I had over-paid taxes to the state of California for years and years. While at the community college, I saw more and more illegals and anchor-babies taking up spots in classes that should have gone to citizens. It became increasingly difficult to get the classes needed to graduate. At the same time, students coming from out of state were charged a higher tuition than the invaders. Meanwhile, elementary schools in California were given $200,000 a year extra to educate the children of illegals. That extra money was aside from their regular annual budget for American students. The schools had to spend the whole $200,000 dollars or they would not receive the same amount the following year. Lots of computers and other expensive equipment was bought for the anchor babies. It was spend, spend, spend. By the end of the school year, the newly purchased equipment had been destroyed by these ungrateful children of illegals. Textbooks were returned with gang writing all over them. So the next year, it was spend, spend, spend again.
I was furious with what was happening to California and the school system, so I hit the streets protesting against illegal immigration. The rallys I went to almost every weekend were attended by 15 to 20 people on average. Citizens would drive by and stare at our small group of protesters but few ever got out of their cars to join us. Myself and other patriots emailed, called, and showed up at government offices to protest as well. People cursed us and and called us racists.
I eventually transfered to a private Christian University because I knew what was coming. Sure enough, the state colleges and universities started reducing the amount of classes because the state was running out of money. Many citizens could no longer get the classes they needed. Now the unemployment rate in California is almost 13% (I suspect it is higher than reported.) Maybe if more people would have given up their weekends and joined the rallys protesting illegal immigration, Californians would still have their jobs. I am now very close to graduating with a B.A. and there are no jobs available in my area of California. I worked my ass off in college only to be usurped by the California legislature’s support of illegal immigration. It is their fault California is bankrupt and the people who pay all the taxes are fleeing the state. I witnessed it all and saw it coming but no one would listen. According to the liberals (including these UCLA students,)I am just a stupid racist. Well, I get the last laugh, but I am crying too for what these idiots did to the beautiful state of California.

California needs to pass Assembly Bill 390, the Marijuana Control, Regulation, and Education Act, which seeks to tax and regulate the commercial production and retail sale of cannabis to those age 21 or older. This will give much needed revenue to California and save much more by not filling the jails with non-violent criminals.

Do these kids know how much of their tuition goes towards PENSIONS? And baby, we are talking HUGE pensions. Its a sweet deal. I want my child to have faith conveyed as a part of her primary education. I will spend approximately $115000 on that education over the next 6yrs. It will not be easy for us. Unfortunately, I cannot trust the curriculum or the presenter in the public schools in my area. $2500 of my property tax bill subsidizes this local school system. Im working to put another good person into this society, one who embraces faith and espouses the good will of man. Why cant my own community serve me in this undertaking?
I should get this kind of support from my own community, it is sad. I feel like any parent that is not pursuing a similar path is betraying their child and their community.

The vote will bring the total cost of a UC education to more than $10,000 per year for the first time. We discuss the protests and the growing privatization of public education with UCLA student activist Zen Dochterman and the president of the UC American Federation of Teachers, Bob Samuels. AMY GOODMAN: Amid thousands of student protesters and armed police standing guard, the University of California’s Board of Regents approved a 32 percent increase in student fees Thursday. A crowd of about 2,000 protesters, including students and labor union activists from across UC campuses, faced a large force of police in riot gear outside UCLA’s Covel Commons, where the regents met. The twenty-one regents approved the fee hikes with little debate. Only student regent Jesse Bernal voted against the increase.

After the vote, some of the regents were trapped inside as students protested outside the building and all over campus, marching in the streets and in lecture halls. The demonstrations were part of a system-wide strike to protest the fee increases, which will bring the total cost of a UC education to more than $10,000 per year for the first time.

Early Thursday morning, students from UCLA and other UC campuses barricaded themselves inside Campbell Hall and occupied the building. They renamed it “Carter-Huggins Hall” in honor of two Black Panthers who were shot and killed in the building during a Black Student Union meeting in 1969. This is how one student protester, speaking from inside the occupied building, described the action.

UC STUDENT: I’m a student representing no one. Statement by the occupiers of Campbell Hall, now renamed carter-Huggins Hall. On 19 November at approximately 12:30 a.m., students occupied Campbell Hall at UCLA. The time has come for us to make a statement and issue our demands. In response to this injunction, we say we will ask nothing. We will demand nothing. We will take. We will occupy. We have to learn not to tiptoe through space which ought to be, by right, to belong to everyone.

We are under no illusions. The UC Regents will vote the budget cuts and raise student fees. The profoundly undemocratic nature of their decision making process and their indifference to the plight of those who struggle to afford an education or keep their jobs can come as no surprise. We know that the crisis is systematic. It reaches beyond the regents, beyond the criminal budget cuts in Sacramento, beyond the economic crisis, to the very foundations of our society.

But we also know that the enormity of the problem is just as often an excuse for doing nothing. We choose to fight back, to resist where we find ourselves, the place we live and work, our university. We therefore ask that those who share in our struggle lend us not only their sympathy, but their active support. For those students who work two or three jobs while going to school, to those parents for whom the violation of the UC charter means the prospect of affordable education remains out of reach, to laid-off teachers, lecturers, to students turned away, to workers who have seen the value of their diplomas evaporate in an economy that grows without producing jobs, we say that our struggle is your struggle, that alternative is possible if you have the courage to seize it. We are determined that the struggle should spread. That is the condition in which the realization of our demands becomes possible.

We’re also joined here in the studio in Los Angeles by another guest. We’re joined by Bob Samuels, who is the president of the University of California American Federation of Teachers. We welcome you both to Democracy Now! I’d like to start with Zen Dochterman. You’re a UCLA graduate student. You were at the protest. Describe what happened.

ZEN DOCHTERMAN: OK. Well, I was there mainly for the protests on Wednesday, and so—so on Wednesday, basically we witnessed police—police tasering students and beating students. And then basically I was—yesterday I was away from the actual scene for most of the day, but we’ve heard that people were surrounding Covel Commons, where the regents were having their meeting, also surrounding the actual—the actual vehicles where the regents were leaving. And so, there were—there were many student direct actions aimed at blocking these fee hikes.

AMY GOODMAN: Bob Samuels, just explain the situation right now. Why are these student hikes? What’s the justification for the 32 percent increase in student fees?

BOB SAMUELS: Well, President Yudof, the president of the University of California system, says that because of state cut to the UC budget from 20 percent of the state contribution, which is—the state only contributes about—contributes only about 15 percent of the total budget, but because of that cut, they say they have to raise student fees. And our argument has been that this is actually a record year of revenue for the UC system, and the problem is they just don’t want to spend the money on instruction. So what they’re doing instead—

AMY GOODMAN: How could it be a record year?

BOB SAMUELS: They brought in a lot of money from the federal stimulus money. They had a record year in their research grants. They had a record year in medical profits. Most of their money is brought in by selling parking, housing and medical services throughout California. So they had a record year in that revenue. They had a record year in grants. And so, actually, last year they ended up getting more money than before from the state, because they got the federal stimulus money.

AMY GOODMAN: And so, what is the justification then? Explain further where that money goes.

BOB SAMUELS: Well, you know, the university says that it’s poor, that it can’t spend money from its other areas on students, on instructions, and so it has to basically—what it’s doing now is laying off hundreds of faculty members, especially the non-tenured lecturers, and it’s increasing class size.

And money is being funneled into the compensation of the star faculty and the star administrators, because in the UC system there’s over 3,000 people who make over $200,000. And many of them make $400,000, $500,000. A lot of them are mostly administrators and staff, and so the university has—basically has fewer and fewer faculty, more and more students and more and more administrators.

And so, what’s going to happen is it takes students longer to graduate. They can’t get the classes they need. And I teach required writing classes at UCLA, and they just laid off our entire department. And we have required classes, so we don’t know what they’re going to do. And the dean of our division told us the university simply does not have money for undergraduate education.

AMY GOODMAN: Doesn’t have money for undergraduate education. But what about the administration, the money that goes into the non-teaching staffs at the university throughout the system? And we’re talking about three basic tiers, right?

BOB SAMUELS: Right.

AMY GOODMAN: Explain that.

BOB SAMUELS: Well, in California, we have the University of California, and some of the schools are UCLA, UC Berkeley. We have the CSU system. And then we have the community college—

AMY GOODMAN: And the CSU system is…?

BOB SAMUELS: The California State University system. And then we have the community college system. And the way it’s supposed to work is there’s a master plan, and the top students are supposed to go to the University of California. It’s the top ten percent of California students. And then another large group is supposed to go to the California State Universities. And then everyone else is supposed to go to the community college.

What’s going now is California right now has the second lowest rate of students who go directly from high school to a four-year university. It’s the only—only Mississippi has fewer students. And what we’re afraid is with these fee increases, what they’re talking about doing is raising the fees and basically lowering enrollment and increasing the amount of out-of-state students. So California next year will be—have the lowest rate of students who go directly from high school to college in the entire country.

AMY GOODMAN: And the issue of the non-teaching staffs, the administration?

BOB SAMUELS: That the administration keeps on expanding and growing. They keep on hiring more and more administrators. We’re not exactly sure what they do. And our joke at University of California is, when two administrators walk into a room, three always walk out. So we never know exactly what they do, but there’s just more and more of them.

AMY GOODMAN: So what kind of cuts are they suffering, the administrators?

BOB SAMUELS: The administrators are cutting—are virtually no cuts. In fact, the same meeting, when they decided to raise student fees, they voted on millions of dollars of increased salaries and special bonuses to administrators and to the highest-paid people. And so, there has been several compensation scandals in the UC system. And what they discovered is the UC has secret packages that it gives a lot of its administrators and athletic coaches and some of its star faculty, a small percentage, and that it makes these secret deals, it breaks its own rules, and that money continually floats to the top of the university. So while we think the universities are often these progressive institutions, they often are run like large corporations. And that’s one of our concerns.

One of the stories I want to talk about is just that UC lost over $23 billion in investments in the last two years. And one reason why it lost so much money is that it invested heavily in toxic assets and in real estate. And it followed the Yale model of investing in these high-risk assets, and at first it gained a lot of money. And what’s happening across the country are universities, especially the private universities, they’re losing so much money in their endowments that they’re having to raise, once again, their tuition and also cut classes, cut faculty, and especially the non-tenure track faculty are the most vulnerable. And at the UC system, the non-tenure track faculty teach over 50 percent of the classes, and those are the ones that they’re laying off and that they’re firing. And they’re also basically reducing the salaries of the workers and also increasing their workload. At the same time, they’re refusing to negotiate with the unions.

AMY GOODMAN: What is President Yudof’s strategy?

BOB SAMUELS: I think his main strategy is basically to blame the state for everything, while they try to privatize the university. And a very telling moment came. After the UC’s budget was cut by the state, the UC turned around and lent $200 million to the state. And people said, how can you lend $200 million to the state while you’re giving faculty furloughs and while you’re raising student fees and while you’re cutting classes? And he said, “When we lend money to the state, we make a profit from interest. But when we spend money just on teachers’ salaries, that money just disappears.” So, from his perspective, instruction is a losing proposition, and the university should just try to get out of the business of basically teaching students and hiring faculty.

AMY GOODMAN: You’ve talked about a great deal of money being lost.

BOB SAMUELS: Right. Well, that money, the $23 billion, is mostly in the pension fund and its endowment and its short-term investments. And so, that’s really a long-term problem. And the UC still has a $20 billion budget. It had more money brought into the system last year than any year before. It doesn’t have to raise student fees. It doesn’t have to fire faculty. It doesn’t have to cut courses. They’re talking about eliminating minors and majors. They’re talking about moving classes online. They’re doing these drastic things. And what we’re seeing is just basically undergraduate students are subsidizing research, they’re subsidizing administrators, they’re subsidizing things that have nothing to do with undergraduate instruction.

AMY GOODMAN: Bob Samuels, the implications of what’s happening here in California for the rest of the country?

BOB SAMUELS: Well, basically, what we’re seeing, especially at the major prestigious universities, is more and more—only upper middle class, upper class students can go to them. And they’re privatizing these institutions. And the institutions—what happened about 1980 was that states started to cut their funding of higher education, and so universities looked for other ways of making money, and so they concentrated on raising funds and doing research, and especially research funded by corporations and the federal government. And so, basically now at a lot of universities, instruction only represents about ten percent of the budget, and so it’s a minor aspect of the universities.

And most people don’t know that, that universities, in some ways, are just kind of fronts for investment banks and investments, because at the University of California, the regents, who are the main financial overseers of the university, are appointed by the governor for twelve-year terms. And most of the regents now are Republicans, who not only have voted against taxes and have not only tried to defund higher education—and they’re the ones in charge in many ways—but they’re also business people chosen by Republican governors. And those—and they are real estate people, they’re investment bankers. The new head of the—the chair of the UC Regents is the former head of Wachovia, and he actually—they sold subprime student loans, right? And they profit from the student loans. And also, they pushed the UC into investing heavily into mortgage-backed securities and into real estate right when those were tanking.

And so, I really think that the Board of Regents basically is forcing the UC or motivating the UC to make a lot of incredibly bad investments, and when the investments turn bad, then they try to take it out on the students, on the faculty and the workers.

AMY GOODMAN: I want to just end with this USA Today latest study of compensation, revealing that at least twenty-five college head football coaches make $2 million or more this season, slightly more than double the number two years ago.

BOB SAMUELS: The UC Berkeley faculty last week voted a resolution to stop subsidizing the athletic department. Apparently UC Berkeley has been paying, subsidizing out of student fees, $3 million to $4 million a year. What most people don’t know is most athletic departments lose money, and the big departments lose a lot of money. And student fees often go to paying for athletic departments. And also, we found out that student fees go as collateral to—for construction bonds.

AMY GOODMAN: We’re going to end with Zen Dochterman.

Just a correction: I said that fifty-two students were arrested at Campbell Hall at UCLA. It was actually at UC Davis, at University of California, Davis, when they refused to leave the administration building.

Zen Dochterman, what are the plans now?

ZEN DOCHTERMAN: Well, first of all, I just wanted to reiterate a lot of what Bob Samuels said, is that students are fighting not just these 32 percent fee increases, but they are fighting the links of the university to the larger economic system as a whole. We are fighting the privatization of the university and the effects that has. We’re fighting the re-segregation of the university and the way in which these fee hikes also exclude people of color and working-class people from attending higher education, and that public education is supposed to have a universal—a universal scope. But what we’re seeing is an antagonism between that mission and everything that is going on.

So I think what is important for many of us is to recognize that we are part of a larger international student movement that sprung up in places as far away as Vienna and Heidelberg, and Berkeley also, of course, and London, and that really what we need to be focusing on is not so much the issue of fee hikes and layoffs, which are also important, but really that the universities need to belong to the students and the workers who work there.

And so, I would say that the next sort of step for many of us will be talking to our departments, talking to our unions. And many of us have also been working with people in the unions at the UC, such as AFSCME, the UAW, UPTE, so talking more with the unions, more with the student groups, more with our departments, and even more with our friends, and organizing.

We also have a big day coming up, March 4th, which is a public education system-wide day of protest. There have been many thoughts about what kinds of actions there might be on that day, going everything—

AMY GOODMAN: March 4th?

ZEN DOCHTERMAN: —going to everything from system-wide shutdowns of campuses, also going to tuition—tuition strike. So there are many things being talked about now, but we can definitely say that March 4th will be the next sort of November 18th and 19th in the—not just at the UC, but at the public education—
