However, Obama needs to do some fact checking before he opens his mouth. The earthquake was a relatively weak 4.4, and was located 20 miles underground, so it had virtually no effect on the Hawaiian islands.

It’s a stretch for him to say that Hawaii would benefit the same way Louisiana would from this part of the legislation, but not uncharacteristic of him to say something like this. Why should weather related issues be part of extending billions of dollars
for health care in any state – how can the CBO properly evaluate future emergency

When a disaster strikes a state measures are put into place which include many
federal benefits for the people involved.
Why not add some extra billions for the states that report the most traffic
accidents, or boating accidents or have more people coming down with lyme disease?

This interview is about healthcare, not disaster relief. In that context, the “provision” would provide healthcare money to states that experience a “catastrophe”. Yes, Hawaii just had a small earthquake. Yes, Hawaii did have a bigger one in 2006. Yes, the one from four years ago did do a good amount of property damage, but it could hardly be considered a “catastrophe” requiring extra healthcare dollars when the “most serious injury was a broken arm and a survey of Big Island emergency rooms showed 25 people suffered minor injuries.”

We have earthquakes quite often on the Big Island due to volcanic activity. I think he’s referring to the 6.7 we had in west Hawaii in October 2006. No one died but there was quite a bit of structural damage – bridges closed, old buildings collapsed, Mauna Kea hotel closed down for a couple years. We received FEMA assistance for it.

The doctors, hospitals and insurance companies get mentioned… what about the lawyers and judges involved? I’m an American but I live in Asia. There isn’t actually a health care problem here because you don’t get foolish lawsuits. The judges throw them out. Because you don’t get foolish lawsuits, you can go to a hospital and pay cash and it’s still cheap.

I’ve had 8 stitches in 2 places (16 total), 3 shots of anesthesia, emergency room after hours service plus the antibiotics to prevent infection for just about $120. I’ve stayed in a hospital with a morphine IV drip, antibiotics, food and constant checkups for 3 days for about $150. And… being a doctor here is one of the most lucrative professions!

The difference between my situation and the situation in the US isn’t the insurance companies, it is the lawyers. The lawyers screw over the insurance companies, who then raise the rates on the doctors being insured and on the people who need insurance. Then the doctors screw over the people because they’re going to have to close their offices because they can’t afford the insurance. The root of the problem isn’t with the insurance companies, it is with the lawyers and judges.

So now if you want to do a little homework, look up your state legislation profiles and look up senate/congressional profiles for past professions. You’ll find that the majority of democrats have a background coming from the legal professions and the majority of republicans have a background coming from business. Obama isn’t going to eat his own, so he’s not actually confronting the root of the problem. He’s confronting a symptom because a real fix for the problem involves going after his own democrats, the lawyers who attack the insurance companies.

This “Louisiana PROVISION” grants extra money to states which have underwent catastrophic disasters that have affected the quality and/or availability of healthcare. It is named as such because of the extremely brutal recovery there from Hurricane Katrina, though it does (contrary to racist – I mean popular belief) cover other states, such as Hawaii or even those states along the flooding Red River (which also flooded last year, a condition that can easily be attributed to global warming – but I know you guys can’t handle two difficult things at once so forget about that now).

I would say phone your representative or senator and ask them to explain it to you, but they’ll probably just scare the living hell out of you like they have been for the past year so don’t. STOP WORKING AGAINST YOUR INTERESTS. GET OVER YOUR ANTIQUATED PREDJUDICES. Things didn’t work out the way you wanted them to and now your president’s black – GET OVER IT. I live in Hawaii (Oahu) and I know of no such earthquake worthy of being mentioned. I guess he misspoke? You’d think that he’d be interested enough in his home state (the 57th one) to know what types of disasters are dealing with. I do know of a “tsunami” that pretty much ended up being more like a drill than anything else. But there was NOTHING that happened that needed to mentioned alongside Katrina. It was a talking point gone awfully wrong. My side – the North Shore – didn’t have anything more than a few minutes of higher tide.

I’m no supporter of Barry, that is for sure. But it seems everyone has forgotten about the near 7.0 earthquake that hit the Big Island of Hawaii in October 2006. It was relatively devastating with some long term economic impacts, BUT WITH NO LARGE SCALE SERIOUS INJURIES. There might have been a handful, but nothing really memorable. Most of the state lost power, including here on Oahu, for the better part of a day. It was a Big Earthquake, but like Katrina, certainly didn’t happen just recently. That said, those of you sounding off like such an event never took place are really rather ignorant on the subject, sorry to say. So, do a Google search and see for yourself before you start mouthing off on something that has some connection to reality. Our conservative side is not served well when you all decide you know everything without checking the facts. Better to focus on how bad an example this was, rather than trying to claim he made it up.

Get this: After the 6.7 earthquake that hit back in October of 2006, “No deaths or serious injuries were reported, and the damage appeared to be scattered, allowing most tourists and residents to resume life as normal.” Why? Because the region is used to earthquakes and knows what to do when they happen! They build to sustain earthquakes; they drill to prepare for them, and they have the resources to recover. Hawaii needs the NOLA Purchase like I need a few gold bars stuck in my cargo pockets.

With this logic, the NOLA Purchase ought cover the recent natural disasters (read, absurd snowstorms) in VA, D.C., MD, PA, etc.

Only Obama (might) know what he meant by comparing incredibly devastating catastrophes. We can only guess. The question in the interview (and the topic) was about whether or not Obama thought buying off votes for his health care bill was a valid thing to do, and if the deal in Louisiana as well as the other states listed, was OK to do since other states didn’t get equal treatment. In order to answer that question, Obama tried to say that buying/bribing the vote in Louisiana by giving them $100 million for the vote would some how help with what happened with the earthquake in Hawaii. That $100 million or so is completely separate from FEMA monies or any other money that went there. Obama stated that the vote buying (money given to some states and not others) somehow would also benefit Hawaii’s earthquake – which it would not. Money (tax payers’ future debt) goes only to Louisiana does not go to Hawaii, unless Hawaii also gets their vote bought.

Whether Obama confused Hawaii with Haiti’s earthquake, or if he actually meant that buying Louisiana’s vote by giving only that state $100 million for the vote on his health care plan, it’s still dishonest. And more to the point, he’s basically saying the ends justify the means of getting his ideology passed of growing government control at the expense of currency devaluation and hyperinflation.

Bottom line: Obama is saying anything to spin the dishonesty and unequal treatment across the states by saying that buying the vote in Louisiana will also help with the earthquake in Hawaii. Problem is, FEMA already gave money for the hurricane in Louisiana (tens of billions). The $100 million now is to buy the vote. That $ does not go to Hawaii in any way. In 2006, when Hawaii was hit with an earthquake, FEMA sent money, via Pres. Bush’s declaration, to that state’s needs (minor). In no way was it comparable to Louisiana and Katrina.

Now, the earthquake in Haiti in 2010 actually received more money from the U.S. than the small earthquake in Hawaii in 2006. Current events are that vote buy in 2009 in Louisiana and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Common sense is common sense.

An honest and professional interviewer in the future should specify that Obama limit his reponses to one minute or less and pause for the next question. 100% minus (premium decrease of) 3000% = -2900%

Meaning, that if say a company pays $1 million in premiums for employees, then passing Obama’s health care, it’s estimated (by him), that your premiums would fall by as much as $30 million – and they could give you a raise. So this would be great for companies since instead of paying $1 million/year, they would actually receive $29 million from somewhere.

The Louisiana “healthcare provision” was put in the healthcare bill in exchange for Democrat La.Senator Mary Landrieu’s vote(60 needed) to bring the bill to the floor–thus insuring that the horrendous Senate bill would pass.
Louisiana may have needed help on this particular issue– but it should not have been included in the healthcare bill and it should not have been used as an excuse for Landrieu’s vote and probably should only come into play when there hase been a catostrophic event such as Katrina was..
It certainly appeared to be the “Louisiana Purchase”, so to speak, of a sitting Louisiana Democrat Senators vote. I don’t think we yet know the total extent of that closed door transaction.

Since this “provision” will also help Hawaii according to Obama–will it also help Mississippi–that state was devastated by Katrina also.

The real issue here is the President saying that some objectionable provisions in the Senate bill have been removed. Really? When did that happen and when did the Senate vote on the removal of these provisions? What he says is simply and demonstrably not true. The House is looking to pass the Senate bill as is in order to avoid having to go back to the Senate and have the Senate vote again. The President may be alluding to the “reconciliation” bill but no one has seen that bill. And if that bill is what the President refers to, then why is the original Senate bill even in the picture? If The House “deems” the Senate bill passed or actually votes on it and passes it, that is the bill the President will sign and it has all the provisions he claims have been removed. If The House passes the “reconciliation” bill, that is a totally different bill and must go to the Senate where the Senate can do whatever it wants, including failing to bring it to a vote or voting it down. Does the President think we are idiots?

Seriously? Where did he say “purchase?” The question was about the “Louisiana Provision”, which refers to the portion of the bill that allows for special aid to States that have suffered a natural disaster, and which has created a medical emergency. It was an example and they use that term because it had roots from Hurricane Katrina. Therefore, if a State has a natuaral disaster, then it would fall into that category.

It is amazing how nieve people are and don’t actually listen and read articles.

The biggest problem facing this country right now isn’t so much who’s in charge but rather the political climate that exists today. Re-read the above post and virtually each and everyone of them is filled with hateful and polarizing language. We are one country but through polarizing politics we a tearing this country in two. On October 17th 2006, President George W Bush declared ” a major disaster exists in the state of Hawaii” due to “an earthquake that occured on October 15, 2006 and related aftershocks”. Wilson Spaulding quotes Lincoln correctly, one of the ways we can destroy ourselves from within is ignorance. If you have a problem with policy, fine. If you get your “facts” from Steve Doocy, you best double check them, otherwise you end up sounding like an idiot.
