His group has protested at many venues I thought to be Innapropriate. They were there the day I married my partner in SF/CA 2004. Bullhorns Blaring, posters waving. Did I get upset? NO. Why? IT WAS THEIR RIGHT. It was Public Property (City Hall). Now a cemetary is not Public Property – at least NOT where the Soldier Funerals in this discussion were located.

No, most of us are talking about decorum.

The Right of Free Speech doesn’t contain a right to act like a lunatic and disturb or harass others. It just means a citizen has a right to criticise their government without fear of reprisal for doing so, from their government.

So, everyone’s got that right. They don’t have the right (nor any “right”) to impose their views with force or forcibly on other citizens. The President, I note, is also a citizen.

I think the question here IS decorum and the utter selfishness of those who engaged in this violent, obnoxious outburts. They denied the other citizens their “right” to peaceful assembly, they attempted to silence the “right to free speech” of the President (who is also a citizen), they otherwise acted despicably without decorum as to the considerations of the general public.

If he confronted people who are against him, I’m willing to bet we’d respect him a lot more. If you look on Youtube there’s only a couple times anyone has ever been allowed to dissent from Bush in public: one was Colbert at the white house dinner, and the other was at one of the 2004 town hall things he did. He handled both situations really well I thought, but this should be something he does every week. If he really wants to act like someone who “truly believes” in what he’s doing and all that, then why does he hide from the public and only allow pre-screened questions and guests at his speeches?

Jamesb, the first government in the U.S. was the Articles of Confederation, not the Federalist Papers. The Federalist Papers were party manifestos for the Federalists (Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, etc.)
