I would argue that it one cannot feel compassion for someone whose house burns down and also feel compassion for someone who burns their own house down.

I don't think that people have a moral obligation to anyone else other than to not harm them or steal from them, and of course our only legal obligation to one another is to do all you have promised to do in a contract. Come to think of it, I think that these simple building blocks–tort and contract law–are the very basis of Western Civilization.

If you choose to extend charity to me from your own pocket, that is up to you; I certainly don't expect that you should or think you are selfish if you don't. And at the same time, any charity you would happen to extend to me should be upon your terms and your discretion as to the duration of your charity.
