Never flew one but, I checked with my brother who flies the B-747-400 for Delta. He said "On one engine you're basically a glider, you'll have a steady rate of descent and you need to have an airport inside your 'three-to-one' glide ratio. (For every foot of altitude you can safely plan on three feet of glide)
