Paris Pool Bans Muslim Woman in ‘Burqini’ Swimsuit

AFP: A Paris swimming pool has refused entry to a young Muslim woman wearing a "burqini," a swimsuit that covers most of the body, officials said Wednesday. The pool ban came as French lawmakers conduct hearings on whether to ban the burqa after President Nicolas Sarkozy said the head-to-toe veil was "not welcome" in secular France.

You can’t fight bigotry with bigotry, idiots.

naomi   August 12th, 2009 - 12:07 pm

If this woman’s body is covered in sores, open wounds, open cuts, etc – the health officials would not be able to protect the rest of the public. NO NO NO NO NO — HEALTH HAZARD – YES !!!

naomi   August 12th, 2009 - 12:11 pm

if this woman’s body is covered in sores,
a skin infection, cuts, etc. the
health officials will NOT be able to detect
this fact. NO on burqinis, in France
or anywhere where puclic shares a pool
with other people.

Whole point behind public pools is to reveal
as much skin as possible – to minimize
contagious diseases to other people
using the pools.

NO NO NO to burqinis. It’s not a moral
or religious issue: IT’s a PUBLIC HEALTH fact.

Kudos to FRANCE for balking at this.

look at the details   August 12th, 2009 - 12:21 pm

BURQINIS: Best way to hide those domestic marks of teaching the lower class ones in the family a teachable moment eh? No bruises visible, perfect for the muslim males.

Imagine being their lifeguard? Constantly be pulling heavily clothed woman out of the deep end of the pool? Do they get extra pay for this? Would another burqini clad life guard be able to get another burqini clad woman out of the pool? Can’t have men doing this, right?
Then he’d have to touch her during rescue, then they’d another honor killing…

Johnny   August 12th, 2009 - 12:23 pm

The muslim cave man,and there ignorant religion are ruining Europe.

sandy   August 12th, 2009 - 12:24 pm

All this political motivation is obvious and it’s time to stop pretending. If you wish to live a fundamentalist muslim life style – you will have to find a country more befitting. Europe and North America are not for you to impose your ways. France is a well established country where there is room for a multi-cultural community but you will have to respect the traditions and culture of the country you are in – not be hell-bent on changing it to suit yourself. Everyone knows that radical muslim fundamentalists have forced their ways on many countries threatening life or death. Your imposition is not going to be tolerated, nor should you expect it.

Greg   August 12th, 2009 - 12:25 pm

She should be fighting for her right not to wear that crap in public first! Thats almost as dumb as a burka or wearing a dog leash!

r finley   August 12th, 2009 - 12:31 pm

Every once and a while even the French get it right. These people need to go back to their sandbox and live in the 14th century in peace.

Kim   August 12th, 2009 - 12:46 pm

Stupid woman, if you want to have a swim with your kids, come of for women’s rights, equality of the sexes. I see no men wearing a burka or a “burking” bathing suit. All non-muslim countries should be very firm on this! And if your body is too ugly to show at the pool, stay home… God has made you, you should be proud of the body he has given you!

sandy   August 12th, 2009 - 12:49 pm

… p.s. There is something else that should be looked at here. There are many woman confronting the law on their rights to this strict attire, which is ironic because the attire they adhere to is imposed in countries where these woman have no rights to confront the law on such matters. The media needs to be thorough. Are these women merely flexing their muscles because they can – and do they need therapy? Are there fathers, brothers and husbands behind these women – pushing them into the spotlight? There is definite political motivation here and I applaud France for tacking the issue and not sinking away afraid of the racism card. Oppression of women is real in this world and our western cultures must work hard to preserve the wins we have made. Plus you might have to worry in the future about all the lovely artwork France is so noted for. Before you know it they’ll be destroying it all in the name of Allah – who by the way is called God in France. There is a real threat here – to a culture that wants to be maintained. If the world becomes a melting pot I hope to God it isn’t with a renewed sense of slavery for women and children.

HansJurgen   August 12th, 2009 - 12:52 pm

Oh, please, cover your face!

Scooter   August 12th, 2009 - 1:01 pm

BON! Good! This is about a CULTURE WAR. If the French want to win, they must do things like this ACROSS THE BOARD and make foreign cultures assimilate. Good job!

Get a life!   August 12th, 2009 - 1:20 pm

What a bunch of bigots both in France and posting on this site. Nice try with the “we need to see your sores” bit. Why do you think that they put chlorine in pools? If you were really that concerned then all public swimming pools should be for nude swimmers only. Then you can really check out the body sores. There is nothing wrong with wearing a body covering swim suit if you want one. There are specially made suits for just that reason. If she wants to wear one, what is it to you? You don’t have to wear it so MYOB!

And Sandy, that knife cuts both ways. If you want to live a fundamentalist Christian lifestyle, then find some place else, too.

Other   August 12th, 2009 - 1:32 pm

Another article said the pool was forced to make that decision due to a federal law that bans fully clothed people from swimming in public pools. I don’t know the reason for that law but “sores” is stupid.

The pool manager was hamstrung since the law was vague on the woman’s garb, which is merely traditional swimwear, and banned her but also pushed the decision up so someone could consider it

What's the big deal?   August 12th, 2009 - 1:58 pm

It doesn’t look much different then a wet suit. What’s the big deal? Does France ban wet suits at the beach? No wonder everyone thinks that the French are a little nutty.

AtlasOjectivist   August 12th, 2009 - 2:09 pm

The big deal is – it is utterly ridiculous. Groups that want to live in different cultures must learn to assimilate.

zimpulator   August 12th, 2009 - 2:24 pm

ISLAM is a stone aged murder cult and all adherents are slimy murder pigs. Instead of saying no burqini they should be doing the st bartholomew day dance with them!

hj   August 12th, 2009 - 3:22 pm

Good Riddance!!!!!!
Go live in a muslim country!
See what they do to women there!
Ugh! Go way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seairail   August 12th, 2009 - 3:28 pm

I like it. France finally taking a stand on SOMETHING! Maybe there is hope for The Frogs. Muslim women of this sort need to get a grip on REALITY.

von bond   August 12th, 2009 - 3:31 pm

The reason for the no clothes swimming is the dye in the cloth will create problems with the filtration system. Aside from this is the fact of the absurdity of the situation. Acclimate or leave the country. This particular group of people have created trouble through out the world for thousands of years. Enough is enough! It’s time they follow the traditions and laws of the land or ‘go back home’.

MARK SPITZ   August 12th, 2009 - 3:53 pm

OK, let me get this straight. Muslim women are supposed to be protecting their bodies from view, with modesty a chief concern. Why then, would you want to be swimming around half naked people in your bat suit, then complain when they don’t want you around. Take them panties off there Ayshe, and jump in the deep end. The water’s fine.

hmm   August 12th, 2009 - 4:19 pm

Wouldn’t the world be a better place if we could wear whatever kind of swimwear we wanted without other people involving themselves?? It was a specially made swimsuit so it should have been fine under the rules.

Well done France   August 12th, 2009 - 4:36 pm

These Muslim women are trapped in the Stockholm syndrome in which the institution they are enslaved in (Islam) make them brainwashed to accept and uphold women oppression.

Break free from your shackles, off with the veil!

READ AYANN HIRSI ALI BOOKS!!!!

Xavior   August 12th, 2009 - 4:59 pm

If this woman is really concerned with showing herself in public then perhaps she should stay home. It would seem rather, that she is intent on making a statement and putting up a fuss. She should be refused entry for the sake of others enjoyment. If she truely wants to enjoy her Muslim freedoms then she should move to Dubai.

Ali   August 12th, 2009 - 5:02 pm

What a bunch of garbage! I can still see her face and that too is against muslim law. Stone her!!!

MAKE MY DAY   August 12th, 2009 - 5:02 pm

GO AND SWIM (IF YOU ARE ABLE IN THAT MONSTROSITY OF A BATHING SUIT)IN A POOL IN AFGANISTAN!! I’M SURE THE FRENCH DON’T WANT YOU IN THEIR SOCIETY, IF YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO *CONFORM* TO THEIR DRESS CODES & LIFESTYLE!! I THINK ALL YOU MUSLIMS SHOULD JUST STAY IN YOUR OWN COUNTRIES….YOU SEEM TO CAUSE TOO MANY PROBLEMS, AND WE ARE “NOT” OBLIGED TO ACCEPT YOUR WAYS!!

Anne Malcolm   August 12th, 2009 - 5:12 pm

Leave it to the French to take a strong stand on something as important as FASHION.

Seriously, if the pool has rules she can go somewhere else, n’est pas? She chose to dress this way knowing full well that there are consequences for your personal decisions. This is what being LIBERATED means, sisters. Taking full responsibility for your personal decisions, not making your decisions everyone else’s responsibility.

Having said all the above, I’d like to have one of those suits, not for religious reasons but rather for aesthetic reasons: I feel sorry for anyone having to look at my out-of-shape body!

Willy   August 12th, 2009 - 5:15 pm

Hey Muslim lady- SHUT UP! Go back to the middle east sandbox and the male domination you love.

Kelley   August 12th, 2009 - 6:01 pm

How about a compromise? When Muslims stop setting cars on fire, for at least a week, then they can wear what they want until the next car fire. Until then, they can wear what they want in the country they came from.

I’d put them on a boat in their heavy swim suits and drop them off one mile from their homeland shore.

BTW, your suit is a safety hazard. I’ve been a lifeguard. I sure as heck wouldn’t want to try rescuing someone weighted down with that monstrosity.

Wally Steverns   August 12th, 2009 - 7:26 pm

This suit would be very appropriate for the beached whales squeezing their business into a bikini, really who need to see that what about the children???

rcl   August 12th, 2009 - 7:33 pm

From an equal rights perspective I think the woman should be allowed in. If there’s a health issue, which I think is probably phony, it could be resolved with a simple request for a moment’s inspection by female staff.

Still, I think Europeans have to force Muslims out of Europe. Therefore I don’t consider bigotry against Islam something to be avoided, but encouraged. Islam is not just a religion, it is an imperial philosophy bent on one goal, domination of any society it inhabits. There is no place for equal rights in Islamic philosophy. When Saudi Arabia extends full rights to Christians and Jews, only then should The West extend full rights of citizenship to Muslims. Whatever laws or amendments are required should be made ASAP. Islam is not welcome in the West.

Harry Johnson   August 12th, 2009 - 8:45 pm

As ugly as she is she should be required to wear it.

dilbert   August 12th, 2009 - 10:20 pm

Islam is not a religion. It is a political ideology that should be rejected by every nation! Religions do not profess to have as their aim to take over the world. This is the basis of islam.

eyerag   August 12th, 2009 - 10:38 pm

Dear Neo-Nazi commentors:

“First they came for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up, because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me.” –Pastor Martin Niemöller

Jack   August 12th, 2009 - 10:39 pm

That is one ugly woman. I am in favor of covering that nasty face as well. Yikes.

Dawn   August 13th, 2009 - 12:07 am

Is it just me or does she have 2 black eyes? I as under the impression they couldn’t wear makeup so does she naturally have dark circles under her eyes or are they in fact bruising? as for wearing the burquini, get your own swimming pool.

DT Wood   August 13th, 2009 - 12:13 am

She looks like an ad that belongs on a can of tuna fish. Apparently Muslim men have absolutely NO SELF-CONTROL, and so they force their women to wear hefty bags, or this sort of “bathing suit.” If they cannot keep their eyes off women, they should be forced to wear blinders, and then the women could wear whatever. Ironically, thousands of men have now seen her in this outfit via TV and the internet, while only a handful of men might have seen her in a regular swim suit at her local pool. Is that really modesty? She draws much more attention to herself by doing this interview. This poor woman is enslaved and doesn’t even realize it! How sad.

Lee   August 13th, 2009 - 7:43 am

These incidents are just about flexing the Muslim muscle. The men (Muslim)
go out of country and buy young girls, they beat their wives, they murder women
in the name of “honor” so when these women move to another country why don’t
they get some brains and either leave this confining religion or stay to
themselves in their “harem” beliefs. These incidents are just agitation for
their cause. Some Muslim man is behind it all, you can be sure.

jess   August 14th, 2009 - 10:38 pm

um, excuse me but that muslim women should be able to do whatever she wants, she has her rights, and no is to tell her what she can and cannot do. She is proud of her religion and is not afraid of what other idiots will think. And no this woman is not enslaved, she is not doing this for men she is doing this for herself because she upholds her beliefs there is no need to degrade or judge her like that as seen in the many idiotic posts.

M   August 16th, 2009 - 6:12 pm

To all you well-educated people out there, Islam doesn’t force women to cover their faces.
And she has to be able to wear whatever she wants, especially it’s in her religion.
And what does the bruises have to do with anything?
Muslim women are not beaten, we are more respected than most of you people.
Respect.

Thorien   August 16th, 2009 - 10:58 pm

Seems to me that whenever the French grow a pair they get huffy about the wrong things (OMG, yarmulkes and crosses and hijabs and turbans!). This swimsuit doesn’t present a health hazard because the wearer will be swimming in chlorinated water (should ppl be screened for sores in places normal suits cover before swimming in chlorinated pools?). It’s also not likely a safety problem because the fabric looks like a kind that doesn’t absorb lots of water (this isn’t one of those crazy dress things women used to swim in around the turn of the last century).

I don’t like women fighting for their “right” to be opressed, but this swimsuit debate is just skirting the issue.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

Chris   August 25th, 2009 - 4:58 pm

The dress code is a law in France, end of story. In Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia etc. etc. the French are required to follow the laws of those lands so why should this be any different?

Burqini Wearing In Question « French at Drake   August 30th, 2009 - 11:49 pm

[...] Apparently, to the officials, it looks more like clothing than swimwear: no swimming while clothed. I have been to a French municipal swimming pool where I wished that there had been more clothing on certain individuals. Carole, the women in question, is a convert to Islam. She talks about her reasons for wearing the maillot intégrale in this interview: Carole defends burqini  [...]

Elise   September 24th, 2009 - 12:14 am

Wow, the fact that people on here are so closed minded and utterly IGNORANT is such a shame. You think you know about muslim women and the religion Islam…and yet i bet none of you have asked a muslim woman how she feels, or talked to a muslim about their religion. There is no health code violation, a male or female could have some nasty std or something else but its covered from their bathing suit. Come on, stop making excuses. Its pure racism and the fact that you are afraid of something you simply do not understand. assimilate you say? Okay, then let her wear the burqini. Because covering up and being modest has been around way longer than anything else. Would you tell the Virgin Mary ‘come on take your panties off and get into the deep end!’ no i don’t think so. Neither would you to a nun.

Alexandra   September 24th, 2009 - 12:52 am

ignorant people that posted here dontl deserve any effort of reading their rubbish. All the respect for the French woman strives to obey to Allah, this is her jihad with the world and she will be rewarded for this.I like to see revert people are so strong!I am a revert myself and class you as ignorant people as you suppose that we women are forced to do things and opressed. We have to agree that there are individuals that treat women bad but these specimens are far more spreaded in europe and america.ever heard of getting frunk and killing the wife?sounds familiar?look at ur news then!So stop pointing to other people;s mistakes while you are a bunch of loosers, you have no morals anymore, you have reached the bottom line of samelessness!we have aour faith and high morals and we fight for them and preserve them because this is healthy.you have nothing but rubish, values that already have been lost in time.you life is just fashion, alot of food, alcohol and sex with people that wontl recognise u next morning.this is you shitty life, you think it’s very cool, oh i;ve been there and it;s just an illusion.I pitty you all, and i sincerely hope one day you will realise you can have a better life based on strong morals and decency.
