Panetta: Obama’s Cuts Create ‘Risks’ In Military’s ‘Capability To Respond’

From CNS News: "The risks come with the fact that, you know, we will have a smaller force," Panetta said at a Pentagon briefing. "As we said, it’s larger than we had prior to 9/11, but obviously it will be a smaller force, and when you have [a] smaller force there are risks associated with that in terms of our capability to respond.”

I get a sense that Panetta is in conflict with himself over who he had to become, associate himself with and back during his rise in politics

JamesDrouin   January 28th, 2012 - 2:54 am

Leon Panetta is an idiot, but then, he's an intellectually retarded left wing liberal Democrat, so there's no surprise that he's also an idiot.

Anyone who does NOT understand that, man or woman for man or woman, the American fighter is far more proficient and deadly today than even 5 years ago is well and truly uninformed of reality and stupid to boot.

Hey Panetta, America gave up spears and swords a long, long, long time ago. And that's how far back you'd have to go to compare strictly on numbers.

Have a look at the term "force multiplier", and while you're at it, get an education on military capabilities.

Bearmaul   January 28th, 2012 - 3:22 am

Hmm, didn't they downsize the Army in the 90's, going from 18 army divisions to 10 and then the left spent the Bush years complaining our troops were overstretched and near the breaking point.

WorldclaZZ   January 28th, 2012 - 3:27 am

Broke Insane Obummer is right on track.
Downsize America.
Weaken America.
Remake US into a Switzerland or Swaziland.
No, thanks!

Respond to what exactly Leon? Shias killing Sunnis? Syrians killing Syrians? What other crisis is out there that we need a Trillion dollar military budget? All that money we spent in Iraq and Afghanistan bought us what?

emgreenlaw   January 28th, 2012 - 3:51 am

You've said it Panetta, out loud, so when something happens we know where to look. This entire administration has done nothing but make things worse for this country. Don't know how he sleeps at night.

AussieDon   January 28th, 2012 - 4:05 am

Obama is just a puppet but even he must be questioning the BS he has to read off the tele prompter these days. After all i'm sure he can just about manage to count.

One additional war against Iran and less troops to fight it, duh.

Nevermind you read a 8th grade level speech this week you must be due a holiday.

It was not that difficult for him……he is an inept California politician……the transition to cabinet member was seamless.

A_pen   January 28th, 2012 - 5:53 am

He's caught and looking for cover. It's only a matter of time before this whole house of cards built on the secret ambition to destroy the constitution and replace it with a despotic control comes crashing down. Panetta has a long history of communist ties and pandering that few will talk about yet know. Ask why he was unanimously confirmed by the senate. http://www.usasurvival.org/ck07.08.2011.html

LizardLips   January 28th, 2012 - 5:59 am

More proof of the progressives' dislike of the military.

A_pen   January 28th, 2012 - 6:03 am

Panetta even fears what he's helped create. This crisis may well cost him more than money can buy. To destroy the constitution is to destroy allegiance to it out of necessity. War, famine what have you are all played like finely tuned instruments. This next tune is with the Islamic chorus and communism. The danger has anyone with a tactical ear to the ground very concerned. read Andrew G. Bostom's essay link in Whittaker Chambers, Alger Hiss, and Panettagate; http://www.usasurvival.org/ck07.08.2011.html

Panneta is not qualified to be Secretary od Defense any more than he was qualified to be Director of the CIA.

He is a California commie. He doesn't care an iota for our military. He will say anything folks think a SecDef should should be saying about defense cuts.

GoldwatersChild   January 28th, 2012 - 6:19 am

Risks to our Military come from having you as Secretary of Defense. http://www.wnd.com/2011/06/311485/

Powell wrote that in the 1980s Panetta commissioned the IPS to produce an “alternative” budget that dramatically cut defense spending.

“The congressional supporters for the Institute for Policy Studies included many of those who biennially commission I.P.S. to produce an ‘Alternative’ Budget that dramatically cuts defense spending while increasing the spending for social welfare to levels only dreamed of by Karl Marx,” wrote Powell in the November 1983 issue of the American Opinion.

yossarian22   January 28th, 2012 - 7:18 am

Of course the cuts hack into the military response capabiltiy. This is something we seem to have to learn from time to time; hopefully this bitter leason we have been taught by Obama and his ilk will stay with us for decades, maybe forever.

freedomliberty13   January 28th, 2012 - 7:46 am

Up until now, "Red Dawn" was just a movie about a hypothetical future invasion of America by her enemies. Obama seems determined to try to find out if this could really happen once he decimates our military's ability to protect us.

Iamwitheileen   January 28th, 2012 - 7:53 am

America…the fraud in our White House is on a mission for the NWO types…to take down America at any cost and in every way…and now it is our military and the defense of our nation that is at stake.

He is going to go against his oath to 'preserve and protect'…by taking money from our defenses to give to other areas…and probably those will be entitlements to buy votes to keep his deaf, dumb and blind and inner city plantation slaves…in the pen…where he wants you!

While we are taking down our defenses…enemies of the United States of America are increasing theirs…and don't think they won't be using them against us one day!

So to all you who love your Chinese manufactured IPhones…enjoy them…because YOUR money…just helped them build their Navy with YOUR money!

Panetta: Obama’s Cuts Create ‘Risks’ In Military’s ‘Capability To Respond’
This is part and parcel of Obammy's "Fundamental Transformation" of America into a dung heap.
Obammy wants his own private army which is better equipped and better funded than the regular army. He is well on his way to doing this.
America is dying before our eyes and we are doing nothing about it.

EOD   January 28th, 2012 - 8:55 am

Panetta's Cuts ALSO Create ‘Risks’ In Military’s ‘Capability To Respond

thrddg   January 28th, 2012 - 8:56 am

Panetta is a lacky/tool who will fit into any government job slot he is placed in doesn't matter if he is not qualified or does't have the background in that field. Even though there is a possibility of people dying I have yet to see Panetta resign. Why bother with weak statement, say what you mean Leon. Quit trying to give yourself an 'out' in case things go bad, you can say I tried to warn you. Weak, and this counts as leadership.

MARYP912   January 28th, 2012 - 9:02 am

Frankly, I've had the opportunity to talk with some of our military personel, from the 3rd ID and from Parris Island….and they like the idea of traveling to Japan, Germany, and now Australia. They like the job they do. Make no mistake….no one likes war. But they are ready to defend our country and our countries interests at any given moment. Owebama has promised all these folks jobs when they come home. My question is: where are those jobs now? Owebama says there will be incentives for those businesses that hire the military. Great…but what about the millions of people that have been without work during this Presidente's reign so far? Why no incentives for them? Another important fact: our military is voluntary….there is no draft. They signed up for this type of "job." And they will tell you that in a heartbeat. So, once again, Obama screws up. Call me crazy, but given the circumstances and present conditions of the way the world is today, I just don't see anything wrong with having the largest and most powerful military in the world.

erboothe1   January 28th, 2012 - 9:31 am

Did it ever occur that's what BHO wants.

grimreaperxx   January 28th, 2012 - 9:55 am

unfortunately, he is about the best Democrat member of the cabinet.

He has on several occasions publicly challenged the President's policy as it relates to the military and international relations.

I will bet you if had a conversation under the cone of silence, he would probably rip Obama's Middle East (Least) policy and the Cairo speech initiatives.

cothel   January 28th, 2012 - 10:07 am

I have a hard time understanding why a $250 – $300 billion defense budget can't be enough. Our military is so large now that we can't seem to restrain ourselves everytime there's some upheveal or skirmish going on somewhere. We are NOT the world's Police Force!!!

Mrs.Tank   January 28th, 2012 - 10:14 am

No we aren't the worlds police force we are our own, and we should have as large a force as possible with all of the unrest that is in the world today. Haven't you noticed how many enemies obama is making of countries that were once our allies? With obama at the helm anything could happen and we must ALWAYS be ready, have you seen the freakin' size of China's military, theirs could wipe ours out in no time flat, couple that with Iran and Russian and Venezuela and we'd have a REAL problem.

Mrs.Tank   January 28th, 2012 - 10:16 am

We'll be alright, our GI's don't forget how to shoot once they come home. :-) Of course I'm all for the largest possible military force on the planet, barring that though I say we prepare our own selves.

Mrs.Tank   January 28th, 2012 - 10:21 am

Why these leftist morons are so willing to let themselves be used as pawns is beyond me, have they no pride at all? I mean it's obvious that they are all following a plan but WHO is enforcing it and WHY do they feel they NEED to follow it?

LayerDepth   January 28th, 2012 - 10:24 am

Appearances only. He is cut from the same cloth, knows how bad this is for the USA and relishes her destruction as does any leftist.

antilibterds   January 28th, 2012 - 10:49 am

No we are not the world's police force but nations have come to rely upon the stabilizing force that the US military provides globally. If the US is no longer capable of providing this there will be a void and do expect India, Brazil, Russia nor China to pick up the slack. It just will not happen so do not be surprised if chaos ensues. Not trying to scare you it is just the facts when it comes to the corruption of mankind. Geeze have you even ever seen China honor a UN trade sanction. No they always violate the trade sanction to gain an edge economically.

Canserveitif   January 28th, 2012 - 11:43 am

Panetta…the time is coming where you will have to explain yourself. I suggest you come clean about all your nefarious dealings with your boss.

ForgottenDreams   January 28th, 2012 - 2:02 pm

I really don't want my loved ones or me to die for no good reason, but if we cut our military and then China, North Korea, or Iran are emboldened to nuke us, our deaths will be swifter and more merciful than waiting in line with a treatable medical condition hoping to see if we quality for medical services under Obamcare/Romneycare.

Roger   January 28th, 2012 - 4:35 pm

I think it's no big leap to see where this is headed.

Destroy our forces, then pounce on Iran when we don't have the strength or capability to deal with them.
America comes out shredded and Obama will have forced a 'post american world' on us.

Makahala   January 28th, 2012 - 7:02 pm

Obama is a Clear and Present Danger to the United States. Any president who put willingly puts the country should be impeached and tossed in the slammer.

Saltire   January 28th, 2012 - 7:32 pm

Looks to me like a guy who lost his argument in the Oval Office and now has to justify it.

Saltire   January 28th, 2012 - 7:49 pm

Yes, and they cut the Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. Between 1992 and 2000, the USMC was reduced in numbers from 193,000 personnel to 171,000 personnel. In 2002, USMC personnel was increased to 175,000. The current plan is to take the 202,000 Marines and reduce their numbers to 182,000. This is a mistake in the current atmosphere of terrorism and international tensions.

The Navy was reduced by a substantial number of ships and one carrier group. The Air Force went from 76 to 50 wings.

Then came 9/11 and the increases for national security. Has our requirement for national security changed that much since 9/11? I don't think so.

neoconsblow   January 28th, 2012 - 9:51 pm

What risk to military capability? Does he mean the U.S.'s ability to play "World Cop" with American tax dollars.

Cut the DoD budget – let the neo-clowns cry all they want.

wohlfguy   January 29th, 2012 - 6:34 am

wohlfguy   January 29th, 2012 - 6:34 am

Piss off douche.

Prof_Turgeson   January 29th, 2012 - 6:39 am

Having the right equipment and backup under fire isn't something those who have never been attacked by those who mean to kill understand at the levels necessary to make realistic military budget decisions.

Were their progeny out there in the line of fire, a circumstance with which few members of Congress these days must contend, I think they might develop an entirely different perspective about ensuring that DOD has the means and wherewithal to guarantee mission fulfillment and force protection.

You can bet your bottom dollar that if Congress had to rely on the U.S. Military for the security around Capitol Hill, it would be the best funded department in the government.

Don't forget it was Clinton's cuts that also meant new and updated equipment and vehicles were never made available. Our body armor was obsolete, our vehicles were unarmored and our men were forced to resort to making field modifications on our vehicles to make them more survivable in combat.

But how the left did scream that all these things were not instantly available when Bush was in office.

Face it, the left hates the Military (less when they are in office more when they are not). So cutting funds looks good to them from a personal and financial perspective. Then they hope a Republican will be in office next time there is a need for combat troops. So they can blame them for the military being ill prepared.

neoconsblow   January 29th, 2012 - 8:53 am
