We all have to pay for auto insurance, so why not pay a mandatory gratuity?

What an asinine statement….you mentioned to different worlds. If I come to your house and say I fixed something and after I left the item did not work to your standards are you going to pay me to come back a second time?
So, if one does not do the job that they are being paid for to being rewarded for them why should they get 100% pay or profit. Instead of an 18% gratuity….the customer should have a choice….from 0% to 18%.

Rob   November 19th, 2009 - 9:29 pm

You’ve got to be freaking kidding me. This just opens the door for establishments to add ‘mandatory’ gratuities to their bills and force people to pay extra.

Local News   November 19th, 2009 - 9:35 pm

“It was a happy hour that went horribly wrong”

Try reserving that statement for when things go horribly wrong…….

What would you say if weapons were involved?

“It was a happy hour that turned out not so happy.”

I know you have to turn it out quick, but try harder next time….really.

oldbluesboy   November 19th, 2009 - 9:44 pm

The thing to say here is…”I will never go back to that establishment or any others that have a mandatory tip stipulation”. That’s market driven economy. Let them fail because of their elitist attitudes.

Local News   November 19th, 2009 - 9:52 pm

Word

David   November 19th, 2009 - 9:55 pm

Why the hell would you go back there, idiot?

Terry   November 19th, 2009 - 10:00 pm

This is why the police fear an armed public. Apparently the police don’t even know the law and are acting under the “color of law.” Had this couple shot the police for attempting to kidnap and ransom them (what an illegal arrest is) then I would have acquitted them.

Local News   November 19th, 2009 - 10:11 pm

Also, note that they were arrested, and no one is crying racism. It appears that they did not verbally flip out on the arresting officer(s) and throw racial accusations at them. White people at a Irish pub not tipping? Looks like someone was profiling…..

Why is our POTUS not having a beer with the patrons and the bar employee? That seems 10x more appropriate than the last time he did.

anon   November 19th, 2009 - 10:19 pm

Bad service after a reasonable length of time? JUST LEAVE… Do not touch food, put 1 penny down as a TIP. By the way tip means—to insure prompt service—-. Bad TIP’S give good prompt service and the money will come.

No Grats   November 19th, 2009 - 10:40 pm

If it is added to the bill and mandatory then it shouldn’t be called a gratuity. Then it is a service charge for large groups. If they have bad service then give them some bad publicity. March out front with a sign – it would do more good.

anon   November 19th, 2009 - 11:35 pm

Now there’s two “anons” or is it three?

Spike   November 20th, 2009 - 12:13 am

ALERT. How many times has this establishment added the mandatory Gratuity, to only have people pay a tip, on top of the gratuity, not aware that it was already included.

IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY!

Hooter   November 20th, 2009 - 12:14 am

GUESS WHAT! THIS DID MORE HARM FOR THE PUB! BAD PR!!!!! WOn’t win you knew customers.

steve   November 20th, 2009 - 1:56 am

Anon, stop with the car insurance analogy. You used it on the Pelosi post, come up with something different.

BETHLEHEM RESIDENT   November 20th, 2009 - 2:45 am

Way to go LEHIGH PUB, you just got yourself a bunch of “We’re A$$holes” advertisement! We will respond accordingly. Was $16 worth all this bad publicity? You’ll be the first to know! HA! You sucked when I ate there, so nothing has changed. BTW Gratuity has as it’s root “gratitude” which further means “grateful” as if you are “grateful for decent service” MORONS.

Lisa B.   November 20th, 2009 - 5:55 am

This news story WILL NOT be good for this pub, or any who has a mandatory tip, which is fine by me. There is no excuse for lousy service. I hope this place goes out of business….

JohnB   November 20th, 2009 - 7:37 am

If the tip is mandatory, then it’s time to sue the pub in small claims court for not delivering the product (food, drinks and service). Next, do not ever go back there and make sure that everyone knows that the attitude of the establisment towards the customer sucks. Drive them out of business.

Tom   November 20th, 2009 - 7:52 am

…entitled?

Eddie   November 20th, 2009 - 9:18 am

Lehigh Pub….hope you go out of business! My daughter is a waitress at a high end restaurant while she is college. She is really service oriented. She thinks the customers were right on the money and did the right thing!

Genene   November 20th, 2009 - 10:10 am

In defence of Anon using the car insurance analogy…why not?? Obama uses it all the time, where it’s not an equal comparison, and nobody questions him or says it doesn’t apply!

B17Engr   November 20th, 2009 - 10:28 am

A tip is decided by the customer!
How about the baloney “shippng and HANDLING”?
Don’t you have to handle the product to ship it?
This whole thing is ridiculous!
Good service deserves a good tip, if you can afford it.

JK   November 20th, 2009 - 10:33 am

Dictionary definition of Gratuity-Something given voluntarily or beyond obligation usually for some service

Key word here: VOLUNTARY

James K   November 20th, 2009 - 10:42 am

Actually, even if you agree with the “mandatory gratuities,” the argument is easy to win: This couple did not receive a proper compensation – good service – for the gratuity, as admitted by the pub.

jason   November 20th, 2009 - 10:44 am

Tipping is BS anyway.
People slowly accepted this and now it’s embedded in our society.

R.J.   November 20th, 2009 - 10:56 am

Greed, go figure.

Bill Smith   November 20th, 2009 - 11:00 am

JohnB beat me to it, but I’ll post anyway.

Lehigh Pub, this cuts both ways. If you CHARGE for something, you have to DELIVER it.

Now, here’s something for you idiots to chew on:

I’m not a lawyer, and I only know what I saw in this video, but seems to me, if you cause people to be ARRESTED under false pretenses, YOU are in trouble, criminally, and civilly. False Arrest. That means they can SUE you.

temple62   November 20th, 2009 - 11:19 am

This is an establishment to be avoided. The liberals believe someone should pay charges just because they have hung a sign so they appear to be a “pub”. I would expect the “restaurant” to have coughed up free drinks or free desert for lousy service.

temple62   November 20th, 2009 - 11:25 am

Reminds me of two waitress flexing their hatred for each other at a customer’s expense. One bumped another dumping a pitcher of hot coffee in the lap of my business associate. He was writing out the payment at our table. Three of us scrambled to get him dry napkins to wipe the hot coffee off his slack and sports coat, but he got no apology from either waitress. He continued writing but removed the tip. This restaurant closed this year. Funny how that happens isn’t it!

kmichaels   November 20th, 2009 - 12:30 pm

Lehigh Pub sure must feel stupid now when they are getting all
of this bad press over a unearned tip.

Dictionary   November 20th, 2009 - 1:05 pm

gratuity [grəˈtjuːɪtɪ]
n pl -ties
1. (Business / Commerce) a gift or reward, usually of money, for services rendered; tip.

Since when is a gift or reward mandatory?

Rusty   November 20th, 2009 - 2:36 pm

Under what statute??? No one should pay for lousy service.

Joe the Cheapskate   November 20th, 2009 - 3:24 pm

With the economy the way it is these people have a nerve to expect a tip at all nevermind 18%. The days of the 10% tip were fine until a jerk by the name of Reagan decided that taxes should be paid on it. Eating out is enough of an overpriced rip-off without the added burden of tips. Let these people pay their staff a decent wage and keep their hands the hell out of our pockets. If most of you knew what goes on in restaurants you’d never eat out again and you certainly wouldn’t tip for the privelege.

k train   November 20th, 2009 - 3:34 pm

If it’s mandatory, it’s not a gratuity, it’s labor. Nuff said.

Anon II   November 20th, 2009 - 6:34 pm

Gratuities are NOT mandatory. That’s exactly the point. They are for service received and akin to a gift. Look it up.

Laffing   November 20th, 2009 - 9:07 pm

T.I.P.S. = To Insure Prompt Service!

A pub that needs a different waitress and bartender it sounds like!

tk   November 21st, 2009 - 10:25 am

All they had to do was ask for three checks. Are you telling 8 guys who come after a round of golf they need to be treated as a group. A tip is given for service above and beyond, this tells you what level of service you can experience at this place.

Daisy   November 21st, 2009 - 4:08 pm

Once again, Pa’s ‘finest’ prove themselves to be complete idiots. Why on earth did they even get involved in this matter? They compounded their idiocy by arresting the wrong people.

If the police responded at all it ought to have been to cart the pub owner down to the station in handcuffs and book him for calling in a false report. Reminds me of the dumb-a-s woman who called the police because — what was it? McDonalds? ran out of french fries .. they correctly arrested her .. not the french fry guy!!
