A real hunter always ALWAYS knows exactly what he is shooting at.

Heather   November 19th, 2009 - 4:03 pm

What kind of idiots go out in the woods during deer season without wearing blaze orange?

Boogy Man   November 19th, 2009 - 4:14 pm

Very well said Kmichaels

Drano   November 19th, 2009 - 4:16 pm

Something fishy with this story. He isn’t deaf so he could hear them talking. Students collecting frogs are going to be noisy not silent. Hope they did a blood test on Bubba.

Chris   November 19th, 2009 - 4:17 pm

kmichaels: exactly, what the hell is wrong with this man? You don’t fire unless you clearly see your target. ETF?

kmichaels   November 19th, 2009 - 4:18 pm

I have to agree with Heather on the fact that anyone in dear hunting areas understands that they should wear
bright orange if they are going to be in the woods. This does not excuse the stupidity of any hunter that does
not completely ID his target first. But non hunters have to have some common sense as well.

What a silly statement Drano. Lots of nature watchers are very quiet. It is idiotic to assume that they would be making lots of noise.
However, a hunter still needs to make sure of his exact target. He jumped the gun, so to speak and will pay for it with the rest of his life.
To be blunt, HE WAS STUPID.

Also, as mentioned earlier, all non-hunters should be aware of wearing bright orange whenever in dear hunting zones.

Eddie   November 19th, 2009 - 4:48 pm

I agree that your statements are right on the money, kmichaels.

Non-hunters have NO obligation to know what season it is. Such comments are as itiotic as the guys who pull a trigger without KNOWING that they ARE shooting at a deer.

People who want non-hunters to share the blame are no different that those who want rape victims to recognize “how they contributed” to the act.

Please spare us any illogical rebuttals to this post. The only thing rational folks want to hear from the posters of “blame the victim” comments is a complete and unqualified retraction.

I agree this hunter should be more aware of his target. I hunt deer regularly in south Texas. I never take a shoot until I know exactly what I am shooting at. You have to know if you are shooting a buck or a doe. This guy is either stupid or possibly lying. I also agree if you are in a wooded area to wear bright colors to be easily identifiable from a large distance.

Now if the victim had been raped in a bar, would Heather’s response be outrage or something like:

“What kind of idiots go out in the nightclubs during beer season wearing short skirts and low cut blowses?”

Grammar Freak   November 19th, 2009 - 5:15 pm

“Officials in Virginia say a college student was shot to death, and another one injured, while collecting frogs for biology class by a hunter who says he mistook the classmates for deer.”

Please correct the above sentence to say: Officials in Virginia say that while collecting frogs for a biology class, a college student was shot to death, and another one injured, by a hunter who says he mistook the classmates for deer.

Makes more sense, right?

Heather – What kind of idiots go out in the woods during deer season without wearing blaze orange? <<< It isn't the responsibility of the non-hunter to put on Blaze Orange. Stop blaming the victim! It's the responsibility of the Hunter to 100% identify their target before pulling the trigger. Any hunter that accidentally shoots a human being because they thought it was Game, is a complete MORON and shouldn't be allowed to touch a firearm. If this was an accident, then the moron shouldn't face any jail time, but he needs to be banned from owning a firearm.

Please don't butcher our English language!   November 19th, 2009 - 5:20 pm

The Megan Patterson in the video needs to learn how speak our language properly. I can’t stand to hear the “lazy tongue”.

Collecting frogs? Is that what they call it in Virginia? The national news reported that the student shot in the hand had his arm around the student that was killed. Apparently she wasn’t wearing orange… was she wearing anything?

pig   November 19th, 2009 - 6:16 pm

He shot them on purpose. My guess is he even had a scope. He was probably “pissed” that they were scaring off HIS DEER, and was going to “Show Them”.

We don’t need to waste money on this guy, just stick a tire around him and burn him in the street.

people-with-guns-kill   November 19th, 2009 - 9:37 pm

AS a Canadian this make me smile and happy to be where iam , Where we have gun laws so morons like this one is running around with a gun , America you can keep your gun murder captital on your side .

chris in VA   November 19th, 2009 - 9:46 pm

The shooter was trespassing on private land adjacent to the college, he had no hunting license, he had a long criminal record that precluded his having a gun legally, and he is NOT representative of Virginia hunters. I am one, as well as a teacher of college students in Virginia, and this guy should hang six ways to Sunday, for my money.

This is not about gun laws, it is about the death of Jessica Goode, age 23, a beautiful girl who lived ten miles from here. May her soul rest in peace, and may her killer meet justice in this life and mercy in the next.

hey people-with-guns-kill;
sure, we have some stupid people with guns, but we’d rather have that than a nation of serfs and sheep. have a better day, eh.

Katz   November 19th, 2009 - 10:47 pm

A man in the woods with a gun is not necessarily a hunter. Even if he claims to be.

dontflagmebro   November 20th, 2009 - 9:46 am

Sounds like another attack on the 2nd amd by a stooge. This guy is a criminal not a licensed hunter.

if history serve me , i hardly say they are serfs and sheep they did invaded and took over America in World war 1 , But they are so darn nice they give us back our country.

And before president Obama step up effort in afganistan, the Canadians was the only country on the fronline kicking tails. while other countries stay away from the action.

And is the only nation in North America if we didn’t have their back, They can whip up nuclear weapons in a matter of weeks so to speak ,they do have the technology and scientists.

1st rule, NEVER even put your finger on the trigger until you’re ready to shoot
2nd rule NEVER point a weapon at anything you don’t intend to shoot
3rd rule. NEVER shoot anything you can’t FULLY and POSITIVELY identify.

Accidents do happen but when you intentionally point, aim, id your target and pull the trigger that’s no accident. I have been hunting for years and don’t shoot most of the time because I’m not certain of the shot and or can’t get a full clear view of the target. I have seen dogs, even a pony (yes a pony) and they can all look like a deer in the woods, when you only see part of something you can turn it into anything you want to imagine. Point is there was a deliberate action and a conscious decision made to shoot. He did intend to Kill what he shot. Not an accident by any stretch of the imagination. This is almost like saying I thought those kids waiting at the crosswalk were the freeway off ramp.

roger   November 20th, 2009 - 3:02 pm

looks more like tweeking poacher than a deer hunter.

Sorry you are incorrect, Canadians haven’t invaded the US in the 20th century. Now during the War of 1812, as part of British troops, remember Canada was a colony at that time and not a commonwealth nation, they did invade the US, but were eventually repelled. Long story short, Treaty of Ghent ,signed on Christmas Eve 1814, officially ended the war status quo ante bellum , although that information did not reach British forces which invaded Louisiana and were soundly defeated at the Battle of New Orleans, January 1815.

This is what happens when Hunters get BUCK FEVER! there are so many Inexperienced hunters taking to the woods, that some will shoot at anything that moves!
TRAGIC! that this incident would occur.People need to be held responsible for their lack of knowledge when they are holding a gun. And if they cant hunt responsibly , they shouldnt be issued any permits. I mean , we take drivers tests to maintain our drivers licenses. but Hunting permits are given out willy nilly to anyone who wants one. Even if they’ve never hunted before.
Perhaps the DNR should offer classes for hunters every so many years..just to refresh their memories and show them actual DEER PHOTOS..so they dont get it wrong while out on their quest and greed to kill anything that moves!
I am all for being able to own guns, but its things like this that make you want to CRINGE

Lee   November 21st, 2009 - 11:06 am

This guy was trespassing. He wasn’t even suppose to be in the area he was hunting in. A quarter mile from the school! Probably poaching. He didn’t even see his target! A disaster in every sense of the word. Idiots like this give the gun controllers ammunition rightly or wrongly to attack the second amendment.
