#OccupyEugene Tent City Displaces Farmers’ Market Threatening Hundreds of Jobs

Tom Hunnel has been selling glass jewelry at the Eugene Saturday Market since 1975. But the Occupy Eugene tent city has taken over the same spot where he does business.

"They're taking away my right to work," Hunnel said. "I have a right to work in this town. I pay rent on that spot whether I like it or not." Hunnel said that if the occupiers stay put, hundreds of folks who count on Saturday Market sales will be out of jobs.

Evidently it doesn't bother the Occupy people to hurt the little guy. It seems to me that they are exhibiting a good deal of selfishness. I must say that the Farmer's Market probably would have had to do a big clean up job before they could comfortably use the area.

eukodol   October 19th, 2011 - 4:03 pm

If this guy had any sense, he'd close the jewelry stand and sell bongs and patchouli. I bet you could get 10 bucks for a bag of Fritos right now.

peteee363   October 19th, 2011 - 4:06 pm

yes, let us protest the big banks, and corporations, while screwing some little guys, just like the banks are, wtf? none of these guys want jobs, they want more free stuff! when are they going to just give up already, this plan of thiers will never work.

NewRiverPatriot   October 19th, 2011 - 4:14 pm

Libtard scumbags! They should be thanking God (though they don't believe in one) that prison is a deterrent..

Reaganite2_0   October 19th, 2011 - 4:14 pm

Well they got their wish. They successfully took on the job makers and won (if won is the right word). Useless dumbasses.

shaggatha   October 19th, 2011 - 4:14 pm

This "protest" has nothing whatsoever to do with jobs. It has to do with domination. The farmers who market need to learn their place the same as the rest of us, you know.

AngrylilDwarf   October 19th, 2011 - 4:16 pm

Sorry, if I've paid rent on a space or place, and someone comes along and decides to occupy it without permission, welll… sorry for their luck.

freedomliberty13   October 19th, 2011 - 4:17 pm

Socialists: So focused on their fantasy of socialist utopia that they can't see the damage they are doing in the here and now. Conservatives: Believe it when they see it. Liberals: See it when they believe it.

6musket6   October 19th, 2011 - 4:26 pm

This will only get worse….much like the riots in berkely and tucson years ago…….it is all about THEM and what they want.

Cowboy Logic   October 19th, 2011 - 4:26 pm

The video did not clarify it, but I would surmise that OccupyEugene, is in Eugene, Oregon.

It "looks" and "feels" like Eugene, Oregon.

Figures….

Thinker822   October 19th, 2011 - 4:32 pm

Why is there any surprise, shock or outrage? No one really believed this was about jobs, right? This is about wealth redistribution, anti-capitalism, anti-Semitism, and the rise of national socialism.

If we have actual governance we'd wash the scum into the gutter with water cannons…but no, we have the Oministration and Hollywood running to stand beside this reprehensible lawless filth (the DNC's voting base). Again, NO SURPRISE.

Bohemond   October 19th, 2011 - 4:33 pm

Hoe to win friends and influence people….NOT!

Thinker822   October 19th, 2011 - 4:33 pm

Thinker822   October 19th, 2011 - 4:34 pm

Only the working American man and woman can go John Galt on their asses and the American ecomony. Flea bags with no jobs, no hope (hahaha) and no $hange (hahaha) can't move heaven nor earth.

Flea baggers have no power to change anything.

I get the strange feeling that OWS and Obama are about to shoot themselves in the foot.

PeaceSells   October 19th, 2011 - 4:40 pm

Between that and Cain's plan to tax the hell out of them with his new sales tax, the Farmer's Markets will sadly begin to vanish.

EricBrodin   October 19th, 2011 - 4:40 pm

HEY FLEABAGGERS! MOVE AND LET THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THIS COUNTRY GROW WORK!!!

PeaceSells   October 19th, 2011 - 4:42 pm

He pays rent on the spot if he is there or not? Sounds like CAPITALISM at work to me.

A_pen   October 19th, 2011 - 4:45 pm

I figure the tent city is a farmers market. They both sell stuff that isn't taxed, grows best with lots of manure and requires no labor to create.

RoninNH   October 19th, 2011 - 4:46 pm

Well, a few days ago these idiots decided to Occupy a park here in NH's largest city, but lucky for us George Bush got his handy dandy weather machine fired up and drenched them with a good downpour. The party is over and the losers have disbanded.

"This post contains mindless drivel designed only to provoke a response. I am not actually this stupid. But I do need the 3 cents per blog post to pay my bills."

It would save us all a bunch of time. Thanks.

Thinker822   October 19th, 2011 - 4:48 pm

You've never rented an apartment or an office space? Oh, you pay for your shelter by the day or hour? Or is it that your shopping cart can be parked in any alley at any time for free? Sometimes you guys are ridiculous.

Al_Gore_Sr   October 19th, 2011 - 5:24 pm

You, Know I've really have not shared this online but my Grandmother (Oma) grew up in NAZI Germany , And I have yet to see these stat's in the
History Books:
Each child was 'Entitled to 25 grams of the following when the Food cart passed their door – Margarine
Sugar
Flour
Salt
Fat
And She said you were always fearful that if you said 'anything bad about a Public
Official the Food cart would pass your door.
Does anyone have the stat's with a car for every German Citizen (VolksWagen)
Because this info has been erased from history by Liberals

eukodol   October 19th, 2011 - 5:28 pm

Yeah, I have to pay rent on my apartment whether I'm there or not, too. It's just not fair!

PACoug   October 19th, 2011 - 5:29 pm

Ahem…have you ever SEEN the Eugene Farmer's Market? A smellier collection of Birkenstock-wearing, broomskirt-clad, incense-burning hippies you never saw. It's a shame both sides can't lose.

OldWoman   October 19th, 2011 - 5:29 pm

The occupy people are middle class, scruffy spoiled brats who think the world owes them a living.

These Flea Baggers don't care about somebody wanting to work and as I gather Eugen Farmer's Market isn't too great. I have never been there and I probably never will.

ZoomZoomDiva   October 19th, 2011 - 5:36 pm

If he were voluntarily choosing to not use the space, or not use the space by some act of his fault, or even a misfortune that beset him, you might have a point. However, when Occupy Eugene is taking up space he has paid to use, and therefore has property rights to during that period… they should be evicted and forced to leave.

H_Tuttle   October 19th, 2011 - 5:37 pm

Who's holding others "hostage" now?

ZoomZoomDiva   October 19th, 2011 - 5:39 pm

…and consensus. They will have to appease each and every one of them in order to get them to agree to leave, even though they have no right to be there during that time. Force them to leave for enough time in advance to clean the area, until the market is over with enough time for the vendors to put away their goods and leave in an orderly fashion.

Common_Man   October 19th, 2011 - 5:46 pm

At least they participate in the economy.

This is actually a very fortuitous happening. There are many undecideds attending these rallies. The misguided but decent people won't be able to look around themselves without seeing that they are associating with anarchists and Marxist socialists. Many minds will be changed forever. Ask any former liberal what made them more conservative leaning. They will tell you that it was the other liberals. They're hard to be around.

They guy from the video looked a little bit hippie to me. I bet he's now reconsidering his views on a lot of things now that these professional moochers have screwed with HIS livelihood.

EricArthurBlair   October 19th, 2011 - 6:42 pm

Your twisted leftwing mentality is quite revealing, though hardly surprising. What bothers you most about this is not that the Fleabaggers have Occupied the space that this merchant has paid for, but that the guy has to pay rent for space that has been hijacked by a bunch of lowlifes.

And who do you blame for this guy's predicament? The Fleabaggers? No, the lessor.

Perverted.

PeaceSells   October 19th, 2011 - 8:20 pm

No, the guy rents a spot and the one he has a contract with doesn't care when they get their money either way – they can afford lawyers.

It is like renting an apartment – 9 times out of ten the tenet gets screwed over if anyone does.

That's capitalism – those with the capital have all the power.

PeaceSells   October 19th, 2011 - 8:22 pm

…but that the guy has to pay rent for space that has been hijacked by a bunch of lowlifes.

Pray tell, why does he have to pay for it, EH? Because some capitalist "contract" I'm sure.

The same "contracts" that were used as an excuse to pay enormous bonuses to the very people who caused their banks to be in debt – bonuses paid for by US tax dollars.

PeaceSells   October 19th, 2011 - 8:28 pm

Sure and they will have sugarplums dance in their heads.

EricArthurBlair   October 19th, 2011 - 8:41 pm

Pray tell, why does he have to pay for it, EH? Because some capitalist "contract" I'm sure.

Yes, because he agreed to pay for it. See, in a free society, adults are free to make agreements (contracts) with other adults. Even if you don't approve of them. And, you see, contrary to what the filth in the streets believes, people are not permitted to steal something from somebody else just because they want it. We call this behavior "selfish" and juvenile. This is how children behave. Of course, as the filth in the streets proves, some people never grow beyond this stage in life.

The same "contracts" that were used as an excuse to pay enormous bonuses to the very people who caused their banks to be in debt – bonuses paid for by US tax dollars.

Putting aside the fact that this is a ridiculous non-sequitur — there was no contract to bail out the banks. That was a (very stupid) choice made by clueless, selfish and/or greedy politicians. The banks should have been allowed to fail, so they understand that the next time they take risks, government won't be there to catch them when they fall. By bailing them out, they are only creating more Moral Hazard — an incentive to continue to engage in risky behavior.

This is the reason government sucks — they know they can never fail and they always have somebody to bail them out when they do.

PeaceSells   October 19th, 2011 - 8:44 pm

there was no contract to bail out the banks.

The contract was with the parasitical execs working for the bank.

EricArthurBlair   October 19th, 2011 - 8:49 pm

And what did those contracts have to do with the government's decision to bail out the banks?

Absolutely Nothing.

Thinker822   October 19th, 2011 - 9:12 pm

Eugene is the land of degenerates. As someone who knew people who lived there yonks ago, and who dated someone from there, I can tell you wholeheartedly that as a city, Eugene occupies some of the lowest intelligence on the scale. They only vote Democrat, they only watch Ducks football (which is a tragedy in itself), and have one of the most boring downtowns in all of Oregon.

AZCobraman   October 20th, 2011 - 12:10 am

You know, in all likelyhood the owner of the spot is the city. The farmers market contracts with the city, takes out insurance etc. and rents the spots to vendors. But regardless of the mechanics of the system, the only bad guys here are the asswipes squating on the park and ruining things for everyone else all in a vain attempt to look important and pretend they are doing something useful with their lives.

A_pen   October 20th, 2011 - 3:01 am

Your "create" I did not mean. I thought someone would throw that back. Shall we debate nature being the source of all prosperity v. government or v. man ? That would be fun. It would put the entire entitlement picture back in focus. It would also cause us to re-evaluate the purpose of money and it's true value. What do you think?

whyurwrong   October 20th, 2011 - 4:42 am

Yes, it does sound like capitalism. This "capitalism" put food on his table, until a bunch of lazy spoiled brats showed up for reasons they can't even explain. Is there anything more greedy then wanting someone to take care of you with their hard earned money, so you can lay around and get high all day. Also I don't think they "let" anyone have that space, we all know that as soon as they ask them to leave things will get violent. They think they have the right to take over the space, not the people that pay the rent. The videos from around the country prove that they are greedy, selfish, oppressive, racist, violent, and willing to trample anyone who stands in the way of their agenda. Isn't that everything they whine about capitalism?

Bohemond   October 20th, 2011 - 5:16 am

Okay.

“God, who hath given the world to men in common, hath also given them reason to make use of it to the best advantage of life, and convenience. The earth, and all that is therein, is given to men for the support and comfort of their being. And tho’ all the fruits it naturally produces, and beasts it feeds, belong to mankind in common, as they are produced by the spontaneous hand of nature; and no body has originally a private dominion, exclusive of the rest of mankind, in any of them, as they are thus in their natural state: yet being given for the use of men, there must of necessity be a means to appropriate them some way or other, before they can be of any use, or at all beneficial to any particular man.…Though the earth, and all inferior creatures, be common to all men, yet every man has a property in his own person: this nobody has any right to but himself. The labour of his body, and the work of his hands, we may say, are properly his. Whatsoever then he removes out of the state that nature hath provided, and left it in, he hath mixed his labour with, and joined to it something that is his own, and thereby makes it his property. It being by him removed from the common state nature hath placed it in, it hath by this labour something annexed to it, that excludes the common right of other men: for this labour being the unquestionable property of the labourer, no man but he can have a right to what that is once joined to, at least where there is enough, and as good, left in common for others.”

John Locke, Two Treatises of Government II, Ch 5 "Of Property"

RexSalvator   October 20th, 2011 - 7:30 am

This is working<b/>
but this is not

A_pen   October 20th, 2011 - 10:39 am

The last sentence will be taken to mean that government must divide all because there is not enough left for others or what of it there is is not equal in quality. But for the fact it is government itself that now infringes upon the right of all men to take of nature equally. OWS does not however seek to toil with nature just to be paid to stay in their cities where nothing lives but politicians and their victims. Why they simply don't move to occupy land as the hippies did must be because they know it is hard work, doesn't pay enough to satisfy their greed and would require them to live by the laws of nature.

I only wonder how long one can exist on money in a city that no man outside it will transmit his property into. I'm assuming the 2 week figure is about right, rich or poor.

falconsword   October 31st, 2011 - 3:08 pm

Property rights mean nothing to these jerks. Is anyone surprised, I mean truly surprise, at how we currently have as a president? I recommend a judicious use of fire hoses, preferably when the temp is near freezing. If they don't respect anyone's rights, why should we respect them?
