Libertarianism is far from “Christian”. The early Christians were a community who cared for the “general welfare” of one another. They did have certain individual rights, such as property rights (Acts 5). A person gives up their right to their old lifestyle when they decided to make Jesus Christ Lord of their life and become “Christian”. A “Christian” is one who allows the WORD of God (Jesus) to be Lord over their life; one who seeks first of all the “kingdom of God and His righteousness” (read Matt. ch 5 through 7).

Nature teaches individualism? Got any examples of that? If anything, nature teaches that humans (and other species) fare a lot better when they band together. If you were really on your own, and not part of a society, you’d still be gathering berries and eating insects. Everything around you was created by other people. The very fact that you can wake up in the morning without worrying about some other creature stealing your food during the night is a testament to the importance of civil society.

This is one conservative Kentucky Republican not voting for Rand Paul. His views on the Civil Rights Act are inexcusable to me. As a Kentucky conservative political blogger, I’ve been paying close attention to Dr. Paul’s primary campaign claims. He has problems with the Fourteenth Amendment. His views are not in keeping with the historical values of the Republican Party. So, he’s a Libertarian? Then why is he running as a Republican? These particular views have no place in our party. Look at the Fourteenth Amendment provision in our pro-life plank. Push out the social conservaties and you’ll have a real problem on your hands. Hiding these views will only result in the same political phenomenon that occurred when Obama hid his views from the public. Eventually, the ramifications — or should I say, ‘randifications’ — will be clear to all and there will be backlash just as Obama has experienced backlash from the Tea Party movement. Don’t tread on me…….or unborn babies, Jews, blacks and the disabled. If he pulls out this election, he’ll be a one-term Senator. Kentucky won’t stand for it.

Libertarianism has nothing to do with religion, and as such has no bearing on Christianity. From a Libertarian perspective, one is free to engage in any religious practice they choose, so it’s not unchristian. I have to say this Social Justice theology crap is so vague, it’s difficult to get a good handle on exactly what the likes of Wallis want the world to look like. If one looks for a tight justification of it, one must look to Rawls and what becomes immediately clear is that in Rawls view, an individual’s natural rights can be traduced for the “common good” by government, at the point of a gun. What us crazy Libertarians are concerned about is where does this stop? Which of my rights can’t you violate to pursue your aims? And who defines the “common good”? I mean, should everyone have the right to a vacation, as was recently proposed by the EU? True, Wallis is wrong about Christianity. Individual rights come from Natural Law theory, which in turn comes from Judeo-Christian belief in a universal sense of right and wrong God has placed in every human heart. As individuals, Christians are obligated to be kind and generous with those in need from their own resources, but cannot subjugate their own conscience or the conscience of other private citizens to the slavery of governmental control. That would be grave sin. Good government is to stop bad people. Good religion is to create good people. Not a wall of separation, but a difference of function.
However, Libertarianism is in some respects also inconsistent with Christianity. Rand Paul’s view of federalism would enable some states to forbid abortions, but would also allow other states to continue the murder of the unborn. Are these unborn humans legal persons under the 14th Amendment? If so, his view is wrong, and basically gives the government permission to allow some states to foster a massive genocide. This is a fundamentally un-Christian view of government, and cannot reasonably be construed as pro-life. Life is for everyone, an inalienable right under the Declaration of Independence, and a basic premise of Natural Law and Christian ethics.
Such beliefs have consequences. Without a foundation of respect for life, why should we expect our leaders to respect any of the lesser rights?
Faith in God is a wonderful thing, but we should always question “religion”. The One True God is Holy, and good, and full of tender mercies and loving kindness. But, injustice angers Him. And He does not tolerate “other gods”. There is nothing to respect about any religion that promotes temple prostitution, murder, child molestion, belly dancing, porn, drugs, rape, homosexuality, mutilation, etc., while hiding behind a religious front and a burka.

I hate the equation of communism with Christianity.
Christianity is about free will. The choice to be charitable should be each of ours, not the governments. We need what we gain from being charitable voluntarily and those receiving charity need the gratitude they feel when they know someone has sacrificed for their benefit and the shame that motivates them to do their best. When the government steps in neither those giving or receiving charity get the benefits that our Heavenly Father intends.
