The Government is the one that is mainly at fault for this disaster because the MMS (Minerals Management Service) were totally inept in regulating and overseeing these oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and elsewhere. BP was negligent as well but the “overseers” of these oil rigs i.e. the MMS are the main culprits for not doing their job of regulating, overseeing, and securing these oil rigs in the first place. If the MMS was on the ball this oil rig disaster would have never happened to begin with in my opinion. And that darn Obama goes around pointing fingers at everybody else but where the blame really lies and that is ON THE GOVERNMENT’S SHOULDERS – AND NOT BP’S!

We basically have an inept administration where Obama would rather party at the White House and do a timid photo shoot on a beach in Louisiana to try and give a ‘false’ appearance of empathy rather than to actually get involved and do something substantive about PLUGGING THE HOLE in the Gulf! I really believe that Obama wants this disaster to continue because if he didn’t HE WOULD BE DOING EVERYTHING IN HIS POWER TO GET THIS THING RESOLVED ASAP!!! Instead the whole Obama administration and several of his Obamatron buddies are laying back partying and laughing at a recent White House dinner with the crowd uproariously laughing and giving applause when Paul McCartney disses Bush yet again, even though Bush has been gone from the White House for a year and a half and the remark McCartney made didn’t make a lick of sense! In fact the Obama administration seems to be alluding to George Bush as the actual cause of the Gulf disaster when listening to his staff give their talking points about the situation! But that’s what liberals tend to do i.e. blame “everyone else” but who’s responsible and that would be the Obama administration itself. When Louisiana and most of the Gulf Coast is facing a gigantic and nightmarish disaster of epic proportions with NO end in sight what does Obama do? Why he party’s at the White House on what seems to be every other night then during the day he goes out and does a photo opt with some Basketball team and then plays some golf and later shoots some hoops with his homey’s and if he perchance gets wind of the American people once again voicing their outcry and disgust about the Gulf oil situation he reluctantly gets onboard Air Force One and heads down to Louisiana and starts pointing fingers at BP and whoever else he can pin the blame on and after about an hour or so later he hops back on Air Force One and heads back to D.C. after accomplishing absolutely NOTHING! PATHETIC!!!

If they had called Dick Cheney and Haliburton the problem would have been taken care of by now.

Without writing hundreds of pages, the deregulation of the private sector is essentially what led to the collapse of CDFs, CDOs, and the housing market, which caused the bottom to drop out of the stock market, which caused people and companies with private investments to lose a lot of money. The money that the wealthy lost caused the trickle-down model to grind to a halt while the lack of tax revenue and oversight of the welfare of the state is what led to the downward spiral of desperation, caused jobs to evaporate, and left people of all classes with less money in their pockets.

If you don’t believe that the GOP was behind the housing crisis, check out Bush’s May 17, 2002 speech on “The American Dream Downpayment Fund.” The harbinger of times to come is downright creepy.

Agreed, with the singular caveat that there is a notable split in the GOP. A substantial percentage of the GOP, including such notables as George W. I don’t doubt that deregulation may have contributed to it. I suspect it has. But I do not agree that it was “essentially what caused it”. Did the actions of the Federal Reserve, by artificially lowering the interest rates for the extended period of time that they did, not contribute mightily to the overheating of the housing bubble? And the Federal government, by overriding the market and forcing banks to accept loans that they would otherwise have not been able to pay, in the name of increasing minority home ownership, also contribute to the collapse? And the tax structure, whereby homeowners were, (and still are), encouraged to mortgage everything to the hilt in order to shelter some of their wealth from the IRS. And it is obvious that in spite of many regulations that were in place, criminal activity still occurred on Wall Street. These all contributed to the bubble in substantial ways.

Moreover, President Obama has, against his own campaign promises, despite the mandate given him upon his election in 2008, and despite his own admission that we have NO MILITARY OBJECTIVE in Iraq, extended our presence there. And to this very day, he is conducting an undeclared war in Pakistan, a sovereign nation, using predator drones, with a reported sucess rate of 14 civilians killed for every terrorist. In President Obama’s first year in office, our military has fired more drones into Pakistan than in all of President Bush’s eight years, with each unit costing $4.5M to purchase.

So, when you say, “that’s how the GOP has hurt our economy”, and when “getalife” says “the cons destroyed the country”, I ask why are the Democrats not equally to blame?

Both the economic collapse and the two wars we’re fighting are so big and unbelievably complicated that it’s really only possible to understand a part of them. Of course it’s naive to think that one party is solely to blame while one is unaccountable. That said, I was responding to your post where you asked what the GOP did to “destroy our country.” I don’t think our country has been destroyed, but I think it has been hurt by the Great Recession and the two wars – major events that occurred under GOP watch. So the short answer to your last question is simply, the GOP is to blame because it happened under their watch and was the consequence of their stated ideology, and the Democrats are to blame because they either helped it happen or were too weak to stop it. But BOTH parties need to stop bickering and learn from it.

To your critique of Obama – I vividly remember watching Bush announce the 48-hour ultimatum just before we went to war in 2003. I thought it was a terrible idea then, and I think it’s a terrible idea now. Likewise, I disagree with the drone strikes in Pakistan and the continued war effort in Afghanistan. I have two family members there now, and it scares the hell out of me to see who they will be when they get back, if they get back at all. I hate it and it kills me to even think about it. I’m angry that he isn’t pulling every troop out and that he hasn’t closed Gitmo like he led me to believe back in ‘07.

The only solace I take from him is that he has shown time and time again to be honest, straightforward, and measured in his leadership. Situations change and decisions are not always clear, but demanding otherwise is unrealistic. I fear the day that Obama loses his credibility in the way that Bush did.

Thank for your thoughtful, civil remarks as well. The childish name-calling, and blind party loyalty can make it all seem pointless at times, for sure. Nevertheless, our country’s problems warrant far more serious attention than mindless rhetoric and schoolyard insults. I am willing to reconsider my positions in the face of facts, or superior arguments, and welcome them from you.

We still do not know all the facts, and likely will not for decades if ever. However, we citizens still have a role to play, and an obligation to do what we believe is in the best interests of the country, using the facts as we know them, or believe them to be.

We agree. But many here and elsewhere tend to blame one of two people for all our woes – Bush or Obama. And that is ludicrous.

That would depend on how one defines whose “watch” it is. When you only consider which party controls the White House, it’s easy to blame the GOP for the Great Recession and the two wars. But consider that all legislation passes through the House and the Senate. Indeed, the “purse strings” of the country are in the hands of the Congress. So when speaking of deficit spending, and the national debt, and the economy during the Bush administration, is it not proper to note that the Democrat Party held had a majority in the Senate in 2001, and 2007-2008, and that the House was under Democrat control in the last two years of his administration? Is this not even worth noting, given that the Great Recession started during the last two terms of the Bush White House?

Consider also one of the most powerful and influential positions in the world with regard to our economy, and a position that the People do not even get to vote on, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve. Do not Alan Greenspan and Ben Bernanke deserve considerable scrutiny, if not blame, since monetary policy plays such a profound role in our economy? If so, then under whose watch did they serve? What about their two-thirds Senate approval upon Presidential appointment? How did the Senators vote? Relevant questions, in my opinion.

As for the two wars, those who blame Bush are so narrow-minded that they hardly bear discussion. It is as short sided and incomplete a statement as would be stating that World War Two began because Tojo attacked Pearl Harbor. To blame the GOP exclusively for the two wars is equally misguided, and not because the Democrats were too weak to stop it. You were right when you said they helped it happen. They were actively involved in the fight against Al Qaeda before most of us had heard the name. Many of them voted in favor of invading Iraq, specifically WITHOUT a UN resolution authorizing it. Then they repeatedly voted to fund it. Then they achieved majority control of both houses of Congress, and the White House, with a clear mandate to stop it. And to this day, it continues.

When criminals like President Clinton’s National Security Advisor, Sandy Berger, a Democrat, steals Federal documents from the National Archives that pertain directly to the Clinton Administration’s handling of terrorist attacks, it leaves me with no doubt that the blame for our government’s mishandling of the Al Qaeda threat cannot be laid at President Bush’s feet exclusively. Who knows what other Al-Qaeda-related documents he stole? Why was Obama not arrested in Sudan, when Madeline Albright supported it? Why did Susan Rice, Richard Clarke, and Sandy Berger NOT want to arrest Bin Laden? And what did Berger NOT want the world to know?

Did it really all happen on Bush’s watch?

I am more than a bit surprised with Obama. How is this not a continuation of the neoconservative Bush Doctrine?

For me, Gitmo and the war go together. I think the wars should stop. But, so long as we’re calling it a war, and continuing it, and capturing prisoners of war, they have to go someplace. I support housing them at Guantanamo, under military supervision, and trying them in military courts. That doesn’t imply or suggest an approval of torture or mistreatment. But that happens in civilian prisons as well. The bottom line is, we need to end our interventionist foreign policy. It is the source of the majority of our problems abroad, and a great many of them here at home.

I respectfully disagree, as to his honesty and straightforwardness. I agree that his leadership style is measured. One could hardly call him a maverick or a cowboy. His change of position, relative to the wars, despite substantial changes in conditions on the ground, is an example of his lack of honesty and follow-thru. I also was disappointed to see that despite his promises to the contrary, much of the health care debate, bribery and deals, all occurred behind closed doors, and not on television as he promised.

As an aside, if one wants to discuss party partisanship, no better topic exists that the passage of the recent health care reform legislation, for it was passed without a single Republican vote – not one. Whether you support it, or oppose it, the Democrats without a doubt own it.

His job approval rating reflects a steady decline, but he hasn’t come close to challenging GWB’s lows of the high 20s yet. Okay, let me be the first to defend BP. Never has anyone anywhere done a better job. We only have limited comparisons, but they are already ahead of the Ixtoc spill. Most of you complain because it doesn’t match your fantasy of what the cleanup should be, but nobody has a magic wand, and none of you have any idea of what you’re talking about, you’re just judging someone for doing something YOU couldn’t handle. Explosions are accidents, and it stills smells to high heaven the way that all the safety backups failed just right. This almost invariably means sabotage. Done in such a way as to cause a massive spill that can’t be stopped quickly. Sort of like the econuts have done in the past, you know? But everyone’s down on BP when they are doing a bang up job, unless you think they’re supposed to wave their hands and snap their fingers and make the oil disappear. And to remind everyone who is predicting disaster for the next eighty bazillion years…Ixtoc damage was over in a year, the effects were gone in three, with little or no cleanup. What you should be doing is contrasting the way a third world accident was handled (Ixtoc) and the way BP does it. Of course, Ixtoc wasn’t handicapped by Barry trying to stop everyone from succeeding at anything. I’ve never seen anyone do so much to prevent success while threatening to “kick some ass”.

Of course, if anyone else can show me where anyone else ever did better than BP is doing right now, comparable problems, I’ll be glad to listen and change my mind. But only if you allow for all the handicapping Obama is doing.

And I’d just like to mention that Bush’s numbers were in the face of a very hostile press and a large, concerted fifth column of “community organizers” out to destroy any positive image of him or Cheney or any other Republican. Compare that to the fawning treatment Dems get now. Compare the same treatment in the minority for them then, and the same hostile treatment for conservatives now that they are in the minority.

Those numbers are not comparable. Like comparing apples and freight trains.

Barry Sotoro’s comment about kicking ass was as mentally stupid as the man hmself. It purely showed his cockey ignornance. He is not a man, he is a piss-ant.
