I have no idea where people get the crazy loon idea that the Federal Government can’t run an all encompassing program like a National Heathcare Plan. It’s lunacy to think they cant. Lets look at all the successes, first off we have the Federal Reserve, then the FAA, schools are getting better all the time too.

Sure there are some things that need improvement, like welfare, child care, and civil rights, but those aren’t really programs. They should be programs but they’re not.

Usually whatever the Feds touch they succeed at, it’s when the Republicans get their greedy little white fingers in it is when things go all to heck.

Been there: ANYTHING the government runs, they screw up. They are not capable of running ANYTHING well. Hello?? Anyone home?? Doh! It is not their job to provide health care.

My main contention with this plan is that it was being rushed through congress without any real debate and most of the members did not read it or understand it. But this is a good answer. If taxpayer subsidies are not used to buoy up ObamaCare, than it will collapse in the face of private insurance. So eliminate everything in the Bill which also subsidizes this option by forcing all other private plans to conform to it by 2013 and then again in 2018.

The post office would not have a problem if the CARS money went to them instead.

UPS and Fed Ex are doing fine because they got into that part of the business that they could squeeze into. The US postal service still has LOUSY service and still gets the bulk of certain business and is still MORE EXPENSIVE than it needs to be. It is losing money and the US taxpayer ends up making up for their loss. And how long as the US postal service held their monopoly before UPS and Fed Ex did well? History shows that the monopoly of the US postal service has lasted for decades upon decades. Government monopolies can be broken, but only when the massed understand that there is a choice and that the private companies compete in areas that are finally legal to compete in. And finally, they end up succeeding against all odds and against the monopoly. How much better would the service been had the government not been a stumbling block for so many decades?

Oooh, I see what he was trying to get at. The competition part of it. He’s trying to say that the private sector (UPS & Fed Ex) can compete with a government entity (USPS), and in using the example saying that USP and FEDex is doing much better than the USPS.

The problem is, that’s assuming there will be a private sector to the health care industry, which the current HR bill shows will not be the case.

What would our shipping options look like if there were new provisions that stated if your current contract changes in any way with your private carrier, then it’s null & void, and you must use the USPS for all your future shipping needs.

Let’s compare apples to apples please.

The USPS has problems because it’s a business…period! And, there are alot of businesses suffering right now.

For all practical purposes, the USPS is a privately run, non-profit organization.

Does the USPS have a bureaucratic mindset? Sure. Are there Federal rules and laws they have to go by? Yes. And, many, many of it’s employees are UNIONIZED. But, the USPS is not a tax payer funded business. Except for the goods and services you pay for out of pocket at their counter, we as tax payers don’t pay for the USPS. It does not get tax dollars for current, ongoing business. The USPS earns the money it uses to run the business from the goods and services it provides.

(There are some tax dollars going to pay an old Civil Service retirement plan that was discontinued YEARS ago…and a good bet would be that pool of retirees is QUICKLY shrinking.)

So, if the USPS raises its rates (which it’s fixing to do again), then it’s only doing it to stay in business.

UPS and FedEx are doing fine. It’s the Post Office and the (government run) SENATE DINING ROOM that are always having problems. They all eat in the HOUSE DINING ROOM that is privately run and where the food is EDIBLE! Even Senator Dianne Feinstein said “WE MUST PRIVATIZE THIS”!

THE POST OFFICE is a model for our government health care…God help us.

The USPS delivers more mail in one day than FedEx and UPS do combined in a year, and it’s a lot cheaper than the private courier companies. But they’re still in business. It’s a decent analogy to make. Another is imagining if nearly 50 million Americans were told that they didn’t have “Education Insurance” and so they couldn’t send their kids to school. But private schools are still in business, right? Why is public education a more important right than public healthcare? And what is so scary about having a reasoned conversation about this instead of talking about “death panels” and “Washington trying to rush a bill through Congress?” When you scream and say nasty things about the President, you don’t sound patriotic. You sound afraid of logic.

That must be one of the biggest gaffes I have seen from Obama. The US Post Office has a complete monopoly, by law, for mail. UPS delivers packages, not mail. FedEx is an overnight courier service, not mail. Neither compete with the USPS for first class mail because that would be against the law.

I’ll give you all a real example of the Post Office. My company has a Business Reply mail. We pay for that service. The person in our Post Office who handles all of our Business Reply mail is on vacation for two weeks, returning 8/18/09. Now, all of my Business Reply mail just stops, not to return until they return. Boy if I ran my business that way, I would be out of business. That is exactly my point. There is ZERO accountability in Government Run Anything! ZERO. So you just wait for the Healthcare Pelosi, Reed, and Obama are going to give us.

I better start working out more, that will be my only chance.

The Post Office is mandated to provide mail service to everyone. If they could cherry pick like UPS and FEDEX they too could be profitable. Do some of you that think UPS and FEDEX are perfect realize they have a partnership in many rural areas for the Postal Service to finish delivery of their packages. UPS and FEDEX say there is no money to be made in rural delivery so they deliver to the nearest postal station and the rural carrier of the post office finishes delivery.
This being said I am no believer in Gov. doing what should be taken care of by private enterprise which is pretty much everything. Instead of becoming insurance providers they should look at ways to make insurance companies and medical providers work together to find a way to provide the best possible care at the best possible price. And we as consumers have to quit letting doctors order 50 tests when 5 may be all that are truly needed in the situation because “Insurance is Paying” and insurance companies have to get out of the medical field of deciding what disease treatments are best. It has to be something worked at from the consumer. insurance, medical provider level not Gov. becoming an insurer.

On May 7th, 2008, I sent an email to a postal inspector expressing my concerns about a resident in our community who was threatening to remove more than 50 mailboxes from his property in order to force people to buy into a clusterbox installation he had installed outside of our security gate. The great majority of people didn’t want to buy into his cluster box installation. They wanted instead to buy into another installation that was not completed inside the community security gate.

I got a response from the postal inspector on May 12th.

They are specifically excluded from that market.

They are “doing fine” in the market segment they’re permitted to compete in.

However, if the law were changed and they were permitted to compete for regular mail delivery, they might not be “doing fine” in that market if the government competed unfairly in that arena, such as imposing general taxes on everyone to reduce the cost of postage, etc.

The government, on the other hand, continues to exist in this business at all only because the government grants itself a monopoly in the delivery of regular mail.

That’s the only reason we still have a Post Office. Government fiat.

Also, companies dont offer post office as a life saving benefit for being employed. It’s pure and simple, if govt gets into healthcare it WILL suffocate private insurance and create a single payer system. Johnny Dollar (are you the famous insurance radio guy?): The USPS works well enough, but it doesn’t offer anywhere near the services, have anything like the scope, reach or profitability that UPS and FedEx does. And there’s speak of them cutting back services. Which is a wide-open opportunity for FedEx and UPS to just fill in where the government was useless.

The analogy is appropriate in one respect: The USPS provides adequate service for every American to send a letter to any other American for the relatively low cost of 44c. I can send a letter across the street for the same price as to Hawaii. Is that fair? No. Is it the best service? No. But it provides a basic level of service for everyone. If you need overnight service, signature deliveries, etc. then you can go with a private carrier who provides extra services for extra cost. USPS does compete in this field (Priority Mail and Express Mail) and tends to be competitively priced. The video clip does seem to make the case that you should have private options in any such system.

The gov. has not given any money to the post office and on top of that the fed. gov. has required the post office to pay ten years in advance to retirement. 44 cennts can send a letter from key west to alaska, plus forward it to a second address if they have moved.

I have shipped via Post Office, UPS, FedEX, and DHL and the ONLY one to have lost items consistently…even with tracking and certified mail….is the post office.
The last one was a bank check that was sent Priority, with all of the bells and whistles to insure it got to it’s final destination. The party never received the check and after 10 days, the Post Office finally tracked it down in a town that was 100 miles away from the destination…and that was only due to my diligence..not their.
That was the last straw. If I want on time and guaranteed delivery with no incompetence, I use UPS or Fed Ex. I have no doubt that health care would be similar.

It’s actually funny that Obama brought this up because I made a similar analogy just a couple of weeks ago, but I told the truth. Of course there is the obvious fact that the Federal Gov’t has run the Post Office in to 10’s of billions of dollars in debt but the argument itself is a fallacy.

Page 16 – Sec.102 a(1)(A) – of the bill clearly states that all private insurance providers may not enroll any new members after the first day the bill goes into effect. If you can’t figure out what this means, I will use the Post Office/FedEx/UPS analogy that the Administration lifted and twisted leaving out the most important part of the bill.

Lets say that the Federal Gov’t decides be cause not everyone can afford to use FedEx/UPS so there should be the gov’t option. But of course, if you’re happy with UPS or FedEx you can still remain a customer of theirs. But there is only one catch… or two…. or three.

You see from the first day the bill goes into law, FedEx and UPS will not be able to sign up any new customers… EVER, and if by chance, a FedEx or UPS customer wants to switch from FedEx to UPS, they can’t. They can only switch to the USPS… and if they don’t like the USPS… tough toenails… they can never go back to the private company.

To make matters more fun, in the next Section (2), it specifically states that rate changes of the private companies will only be allowed if the gov’t says so.

So what do you think will happen if a FedEx or UPS is not allowed to expand its customer base but the USPS not only can expand their customer base but also control the rates the competitors can charge? The companies will go out of business and quickly.

That’s the big lie. Obama is trying to suggest that private insurance companies will thrive under this plan? Wrong. It’s designed to kill private insurance and they know this. If an insurance company cannot increase it’s risk pool, rates go up for everyone exponentially, everyone leaves and the gov’t has effectively destroyed private health care.

You can’t have competition when both sides don’t play by the same set of rules. The USPS doesn’t rig the game against Fedex and UPS.

BTW: The bill makes constant references to Y1 which is “Year One.” Do you know when Year One is? I assumed that it would be the year that the bill went into law. Well, I was informed the other day by AZ Congressman John Shadegg that “Year One” is 2013. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought this was urgent and needed to be completed in 2 weeks or people would be dying in the streets. No, it turns out that they don’t want this to go into effect until after Obama runs for president in 2012.

The Fed, which was the proximate cause of our entire economic catastrophe (keeps rates too low, too long, fractional reserve lending, fiat currency, etc., etc.). The FAA, which has had outdated systems for, oh, 30 years and can’t seem to update them? A public school system that is 2nd in the world in terms of per capita spending per child, and yet ranks, what, 40-50 in the world in terms of performance?

Even if they could run something, we shouldn’t be taking this risk. Haven’t we learned anything about systemic risk after (stupidly) bailing out the banks? Don’t centralize important functions — decentralize them. Give the power back to the states and the people and let them experiment and figure out what works. The government already spends 50 cents of every dollar. Government is the problem not the solution.

Costs are accounted for but how will those that work for the Federal plan be accounted for with meetings, etc? First .. the post office does not get government subsidies, but must run on it’s own merit. And didn’t they just want to cut back to every other day for home delivery because of the expense?? Is that what will happen to health care then?? If it gets too expensive they will just cut back???

Second .. the US postal service is an amazing entity. It delivers huge volumes of mail and rarely loses anything. But to compare it to FedEx and UPS just isn’t right. The USPS has a lock on certain types of delivery because it’s too expensive to have multiple carriers … mail to your door and junk mail. So will private insurance become the same thing?? From what I’ve seen in other systems, yes. Most people will gravitate to the cheapest thing possible, no matter what the service. The wealthy, who can afford the best care money can buy, will always be able to get top-notch service. It happens today in the FedEx, UPS, and USPS delivery systems, and in the France and Canada and Cuba health care systems. You want next day delivery?? You have to pay big bucks for it. You want a package whenever we get around to it?? Oh .. that’s really cheap.

I work at UPS in Louisville. I see cargo can after cargo can filled with mail from the post office. They can’t even deliver all their mail. The Post Office needs the private sector to even get its job done. That was the most stupid remark Obama could have made. And as Harry Reid would say, “this bill is lost”.

The postal service does not pay income taxes, property taxes, or vehicle license fees.

It cannot effectively run itself because there are politics involved with running its business. This is why it loses money.

How can anyone think that healthcare will be handled differently. But of the three, UPS, FedEx, and USPS, should any one of them go belly-up, which do you suppose the Federal Govt. would use tax dollars to prop up? The answer, of course, is the Postal Service (a private corporation that has already received rescue from the Federal Govt. on many an occasion) would get help. I for one have no problem with this, as the USPS provides a helpful and necessary service, even should one of the giant shippers go broke. But, apply now this logic to the health care industry, as Obama attempted to do here. He was trying to address concerns over a government takeover of the industry. But by his own argument he shows us that A) the Federal Government can’t run anything on such a scale with anything like efficiency (the military doesn’t count because it’s anything but efficient; it only matters that it’s the best, whatever the costs), and B) using the example of the Post Office, even when it does fail, the Federal Government will provide an unfair competitive advantage, the ultimate result of which will be that the USPS ultimately, if the Government so desires, will be controlled by the Federal Government. I hate to be too deterministic about these sorts of things, but the end result is inevitable. No government voluntarily curtails its own power(s).

Do a Google search for Postal Service appropriations to see. Health care, on the other hand, is not mandated by the Constitution, or even allowed to be dealt with by the Federal government. Read the Tenth Amendment to see for yourself.

It is a private “non-profit” organization registered as a corporation in Delaware. It issues stock that is non-transferable and not available but by invite only. The stock pays 6% dividends, as dictated by law.

The Post Office is losing money because the people working there have no idea what good customer service is. I don’t like going to the post office and stand in while the people at the windows move at a snell pace and take their breaks while there is long lines. The customer service is UNSATISFACTORY, As for GM I wasted all day last Friday at Cowboy GM in Silsbee, Texas just trying to get a price on a new truck. All I could get from 2 salesman is how much could I pay monthly. I never did get a price and will not go back their. As far as health care leave it like it is except make changes to Medicad. The USPS operates as a Gov’t enterprise and supports itself through the sale of its product…. postage. Most postal workers do their best each day with what they are given. UPS and FedEx do have a universal delivery mandate. How many people know that they pay the USPS to deliver their parcels and overnight letters??? It’s called “Delivering the Last Mile” program, and it’s been a great partnership. The Postal Service is not losing money the way it’s said. The USPS is the only company/agency whether public or private that is required to PREPAY health benefits for FUTURE retirees! That was $5.6 BILLION last year. NO OTHER COMPANY OR FEDERAL AGENCY IS REQUIRED TO DO THAT! How much does UPS and FedEx have to pay congress each year??? The answer is a BIG FAT $0! The USPS pays anywhere from $350-$500 million each year! Also, when gas prices go up (doubled a year ago if you recall)UPS and FedEx routinely add a fuel surcharge… something the USPS cannot do. AND a HUGE difference between UPS, FedEx and the USPS??? The USPS is a constitutional function of government set forth by the founders. That means the gov’t is supposed to deliver the mail… Did you know that the USPS delivers more in 3 days than FedEx delivers for the entire year??? Did you know that the USPS delivers more in 7 days than UPS does for the entire year??? The USPS is a great value for the money.

Two problems with his comparison:

1) Nobody competes with the Post Office. The Post Office has a monopoly on all mail smaller than 8 1/2 X 11 a monopoly on stamps, stamp prices and a monopoly on mailboxes. Try mailing a letter at FedEx. You can’t – that’s not competition. And the Post Office STILL can’t make money in a monopoly.
UPS and FedEx compete in the non-monopoly markets outside the Post Office’s monopoly. And the Post Office can’t compete there subsidized!

The government can’t run the Post Office or Amtrak. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing twice and expecting different results.

And now we are to believe that government health care ever going to be cheaper than private health care?

The president is already admitting in a comparison that government run systems are worse than private systems and solely have the problems? The post office is required by Congress to maintain tens of thousands of money-losing retail outlets, deliver 6 days a week, and serve areas that are money losers. The private sector companies, whose profits are down in the 60 – 70% range despite the sweetheart contracts they have to fly the USPS mail, don’t do any of these things. USPS is a government agency whose services are priced to break even so there is no cost to the taxpayer while the private sector companies’ services are priced to provide a dividend to their shareholders.

A question for the President: Are UPS and FedEx lending the government $6 billion each year? Until they do, don’t compare their performance with USPS.

First of all FedEx is NOT doing fine. My husband works for FedEx. We’ve taken pay cuts, watched people be escorted out as they were laid off (something FedEx has never had to do before), and watched our retirement matching go away.
Since Jan. the employees at FedEx have not been allowed to buy paper, pens, or any other office supplies.

The reason private insurers will go out of business is because they are giving small employers an INCENTIVE not to provide employer based health insurance and kick everyone over to the public option plan.

Watch how slowly the average teller at the post office moves when going to get stamps, check for packages, or drop parcels in a bundle. (Compare UPS or Fed Ex employees.) And how much time is wasted by those constant question about insurance, hazardous materials, etc. – hey you think maybe if I put it in a Priority Mail box with Priority Mail tape and a Priority Mail mailing sticker that you don’t have to ask me how I’m sending it?

I just yesterday got a package delivered by the post office. It looked like they kicked all the way from my grand daughter in California to my home in Texas. I am afraid that the Rationing Boards who will be deciding my health care will treat me in the same way they treat my mail. Their attitude is – “We deliver a lot of mail. What’s the big deal? It’s only one package”?

And who runs the post office…? Enough said!

Several points of fact.

In 2004 the Postal Regulatory Commission recommended to Congress that the USPS be required to pre-fund its retirees health benefits…as well as make “catch up” payments. This was passed by Congress in 2006. No other company, or governmental agency, is required to do that. If it was not for those payments the USPS actually had a surplus of over $2.5 billion dollars the last two years. And would only be in the red by $700 million this year. Which considering the economy, and the scope of what the USPS covers, isn’t too bad. There are alot privates companies that would love to have those numbers.

The USPS is required, by law, to deliver to every address in this country 6 days a week. From NYC to the Alaskan out back. Contrary to popular belief neither UPS nor Fedex delivers to every address in the US. Being private companies they can “cherry pick” who they do, and do not, deliver to. It’s a little known fact that the USPS delivers hundreds of millions of packages every year for UPS, Fedex, DHL and others. You require UPS and Fedex to deliver to every address in the US 6 days a week and see if they make a profit. Which is why, despite some of the comments on here, UPS and Fedex, nor anybody else, would want the USPS’s responsibilities. The USPS moves more pieces, in one day, than UPS and Fedex do combined in a year.

Several countries in Europe, I think its around 12, have tried privatizing their postal services. In all but 2 instances it has failed. Either the companies that held the contracts went broke, or dumped the problem back onto the governments. In Germany, one of the two places privatization has succeeded, the cost to mail a letter is $1. If it costs $1 to mail something from one side of Germany to another, just imagine what it would cost to send something from Florida to California.

I trade sports cards as a side line/hobby. I can ship one to anywhere in the US, through the USPS, for about $2 with it delivered within three days. The cheapest UPS or Fedex will ship them is $5, with it taking 5 to 10 days to arrive. Being able to send something anywhere in this country for 44 cents is a bargain.

Whether you like it or not there are still tens of millions of people dependent upon the USPS. Either they are behind the technology curve, or can’t afford computer/internet access. Until the government puts a computer and high speed access into every home, people will still depend on mail. And you can just imagine how much it would cost to provide all of those people with a computer and dsl.

The USPS is not a private company. No matter what some people may claim. If it runs a surplus, the extra money goes into the general fund and is spent by Congress. It’s employees come under CSRS/FERS and retirement checks are stamped “Treasury of the United States of America.” It is a governmental agency just like the USDA or Corps of Engineers. The only difference between the USPS and other federal agencies is that it is the only one that’s required to fund itself. If other government agencies were required to do that it would cost you $50 a person to get into Yellowstone park.

I wasn’t aware of a law or rule that said private schools couldn’t enroll new students or re-enroll existing ones that dropped out or changed their status (rough analogy to HR 3200).

Even if Obama is trying to make some poor example for private businesses being able to compete against public ones it’s still not valid. The Post Offive CAN’T go out of business and has always had far worse service- with far slower time in transit- than the private companies. When the Post Office tears something up they just send you a letter saying “sorry” compared to UPS which insures ALL items automatically against damage or theft. The Post Office has enormous problems with employee theft and they are so well known that many people use UPS or other carriers solely because of them. The diamond district in New York gave up on the Post Office years ago because so many of their items were being stolen before they got to their destination. The Post Office pays NO income taxes to the federal government while UPS alone pays over a billion dollars a year in various state and local taxes. Remember that there are NO taxes paid by the P.O. on their millions of gallons of fuel used every year, they never have to pay a parking ticket, and no money goes to local schools from property taxes on any of their thousands and thousands of buildings and property because they are exempt and pay nothing. They don’t even have to pay matching funds for things like social security benefits etc. on their employees that all private businesses must pay, because their employees are federal workers and covered by the federal government. Even with such enormous advantages the Post Office STILL can’t operate at a profit because it is so extraordinarily inefficient and so poorly managed. They would cease to exist tomorrow except that they can simply run deficits forever and they can’t go out of business.

The last thing the Post Office needs is to be thrown into the friggin’ health care debate by the President…..

It’s outlined in sections 440 and 1904 of the House bill (Page 838), under the heading “home visitation programs for families with young children and families expecting children.” The programs (provided via grants to states) would educate parents on child behavior and parenting skills.

The bill says that the government agents, “well-trained and competent staff,” would “provide parents with knowledge of age-appropriate child development in cognitive, language, social, emotional, and motor domains … modeling, consulting, and coaching on parenting practices,” and “skills to interact with their child to enhance age-appropriate development.”

I think it is ludicrous and there are better ways of going about it than what is available now. However back to the argument!
He never said post office is efficient, he never said let’s run health care like our post office. He said that private enterprises can operate even when gov’t agencies operate in the same sphere. If you are going to make a compelling argument, you will have to prove the following:
When gov’t entered the marketplace, it destroyed private enterprises. If you can’t give an example of when that happened, you can’t bash the man.

And UPS REMAINS THE ONLY one that delivers to every address in the United States. All of the folks in rural areas that are even somewhat remote know that the Post Office doesn’t deliver to them- they require them to get a post office box and drive into town to get their mail! The Post Office has been doing that for years while still claiming to service all addresses. UPS, and to a lesser extent FedEx, are often the only ones who drive to those homes in the country where many people even run their own businesses nowadays via the internet.

The USPS delivers hundreds of millions of packages every year for UPS and Fedex. UPS and Fedex pay the USPS $2 per package to take it “the last mile.” It’s to areas that they DO NOT deliver to. I just wanted to let you know why I am opposed to government health care.

Big reasons? My parents and grandparents have military insurance. My mom is now living with us and is very feeble physically. The paperwork that she has to fill out and the hoops that she has to jump through to get her medication is unbelievable. I pray that she never gets to the point where she can’t fill out her own paper work, because I don’t know that I could do it, and I certainly don’t want to, even though I am well educated. My mom has worked in the medical profession in a variety of capacities including medical records all of her life, but even she struggles and finds the forms confusing.
All of these new people having to fill out the forms. All of the new people having to process the forms. All of the people having to wait in line for someone to help them fill out the forms. All of the people having to be trained to help all of these new people fill out the form. But wait, what happens when someone makes a mistake?
You send my dad the wrong medicine and he will take the wrong medicine. Oh the line and waiting for a mistake to be corrected..if death doesn’t occur. All of the gas used to go back to sit in line and wait for a mistake to be cleared up. BTW where do all of the new doctors come from?

Now when I had health care and needed a prescription. It was simple. I can assure you that it is not simple for my mom or my dad. I can also assure you that they have made several mistakes!!!!

I have been w/o health care for the past 9 years. I have been forced to eat right, exercise, and take care of myself. When I had health insurance I went to the doctor a lot. Now, I never go. I am alive well and doing much better than I would be If I still went to the Dr. over every little thing. Who knows what medication I might be on?

I actually started becoming very interested in my health at an early age, because both of my parents are in very poor health. I have to say that I believe that they are where they are in part because of the enormous amount of medication that they ingest daily.

High blood sugar and blood pressure really should be treated by diet and exercise not a pill. Most illnesses can be treated without doctors. One medication leads to another as side effects of the initial medication are treated. My mom will have eye surgery this month to correct a problem that her medication caused. If it doesn’t work she will have to have the surgery again. Then she may still lose her eyesight. How sad!

BTW I am in complete agreement with all of the other reasons that everyone else I know is opposed to government run health care.
I AM not the uninformed moron that you would like to make me out to be. My sister works for the post office. I have never seen the govt. do anything well…except to tax me out of the ability to save for retirement.

Oh, and by the way… guess who delivers all the marketing inserts and junk mail to the postal service???? Umm.. that would be FedEx and UPS.. Yes, you guessed it.. We are under GOVERNMENT contract to deliver these materials to each and every Postal location.. Why? Probably because we can deliver 99.8% of all shipments on time. Maybe if the Postal Service offered actual transit times on parcials and mail, they could get some business… but until the outdated systems and officials in place see this, nothing will change..

Typical Liberal Logic: Government-run program (Post Office) doesn’t destroy competition. The proof is in the fact that it needs constant Taxpayer Bail-outs. Therefore, “Single-Payer” won’t destroy Private Insurance. There is NO comparison between the two! But wait, ‘Single-Payer’ will somehow NOT require constant bail-outs. Because it has to compete. Just ignore the sections in the bill before Congress that gradually kill Private insurance and force people into Single-Payer. Ignore that it will Insure the UnInsurable and that current systems (Medicare, Medicaid: both bankrupt, by the way) cost over 25% per person than private systems. ALSO if a senior returns to the workplace, the payment is made a second time – YES – DOUBLE PAYMENT because congress never authorized reducing the wage-earners double payment. With the possible exceptions of the military and NASA of the 60’s and early 70’s, pretty much EVERYTHING the government touches is a complete and utter failure. Public housing, social security, medicaid, medicare, public education, the VA hospital system, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Amtrack. Let the market decide. Free up insurance companies to operate across state lines so that we get REAL competition into the market place. Let everyone purchase their own insurance and if employers wish to subsidize their employees benefits as a perk of employment they can do it. Make all health insurance premiums tax deductible for everyone no matter how much money they make. The free market ALWAYS works and government ALWAYS fails. Millions of people making hundreds of millions of decisions every day are better at allocating scarce resources than a few hundred government bureaucrats trying to do it all. People know better how to spend their money than the government does.

Governments should pave the roads, enforce the laws and then, get the hell out of the way. That’s what makes a great country. Socialism has been tried and it has failed everytime. Socialism creates resentment between those who work and have the fruits of their labor taken from them and those who have those fruits handed to them when they did nothing to earn them. If you take the concept of private property and the risk/reward system out of the economy, you no longer have an economy. Russia figured this out, China is quickly figuring it out. When will American liberals figure it out?

As a female postal employee of 23 years life inside the usps has never been easy.Its run tlike the Military , that never bothered me it just gets the job done, like any other employer, they have always wanted 10 hrs worth of work for 8 hrs a day. With that said I have loved my job. I have raised and fed and clothed my children with this job . I will always be thankful to the usps. The usps is not subsidized by the government and we have not asked for any bailouts other than price on stamps and not forcing us to give 10 years of prepaid funds into future retirements .which by the way is there anyone who can move 10 times and still get their letter, yes through the usps.I emplor people to do your research and know that the percentage of lost mail is so low and that the automated machine is usually the culprit at eating your letter. Dont think the future hackers wont get into your bank accounts the smarter they get , so remember when you are wishing us away, we have always been to your home everyday watched your neighborhoods for vandals and for most of the time delivered good news!!!!!

RC in OK – Suggest you move to outback Alaska and stick up your mailbox and see how many days the USPS delivers to you. Heck, there are places in the panhandle of your state where a homesteading rancher would not get mail delivery. You’d either have to stick your box next to some road which could be miles away from your residence or else get a P.O. Box at the nearest P.O.

Like most government operations, it’s a union outfit run on seniority. It’s inefficient. And I for one don’t want to subsidize somebody in one of the outer Hawaiian Islands sending letters to Houlton, Maine. I don’t buy the argument that it’s great that we can send letters anywhere for 44c. Everybody needs to learn to pay for what they do, whether it’s $100 to go to a National Park or 10% of house value to insure in the 9th ward of N.O. If it costs too much to mail letters people will stop doing it, find alternatives, or move. Markets rule!

Paul there are restrictions as to where a box can, and cannot be placed. For example, if it would require it to be near a ditch, the counties will not allow it. I’ve seen country graders grade down mail boxes that were placed where they didn’t want them. There could have been any number of reasons why they weren’t allowed to place a box next too their house. How many miles off the direct line of travel would it have been? What is the normal conditions of the road? Etc, etc. I know from personal experience that I couldn’t get UPS or Fedex to deliver to my residence, but got mail there everyday. And I lived inside a small town.

That 44 cents is an average cost that it takes to mail something. If you don’t like paying 44 cents to send something to California, or wherever, use UPS or Fedex and pay $5 a shot.

After I stood in line for an hour, a postal employee told me (with glee) that my paperwork was not correct (on a minor technicality) and that I would have to some back another time. FedEx and UPS, on the other hand, have gone out of their way to assist me more than once without me even asking. While I understand that there are over-officious bureaucrats in any corporation who love to stick it to people – I’ve seen it far more in government than in the real business world. I need government health care like I need a hole in my head. (No worries there, a hole in the head is probably not covered under OB-Care)

And keep in mind, the Post Office is only even REMOTELY viable because there is a law prohibiting Fed Ex and UPS from delivering first class mail. This is what happens when Obama goes off-prompter. HE TELLS THE TRUTH!!

When the Left use to criticize Bush we use to use a lot of hyperbole which turned out to be almost true. You are correct, the USPS is not financially subsidized by the Fed Gov’t Nevertheless, it is without dispute a Federal Program. -It (the USPS) is legally defined as an “independent establishment of the executive branch of the Government of the United States,” (39 U.S.C. § 201) and is wholly owned by the government and controlled by the Presidential appointees and the Postmaster General. As a quasi-governmental agency, it has many special privileges, including sovereign immunity, eminent domain powers, powers to negotiate postal treaties with foreign nations, and an exclusive legal right to deliver first-class and third-class mail.

“Establishment of the executive branch” and “controlled by Presidential appointees” is enough to establish the Gov’t has control. I repeat –Makes you real secure re: federal run/subsidized health care doesn’t it? If you want substitute “establishment of the executive branch” for “federal run” and “controlled” for “subsidized”. Net result is the same.

What counts is what is actually in the bill and after it is passed it is too late when you find out that your health care may be limited because of what is actually in the bill. It isn’t like Hussein hasn’t lied to the people before. He promised that under his health care plan, those who did not have insurance for what ever reason, would have access to the same health care that he and members of Congress enjoy. And UPS REMAINS THE ONLY one that delivers to every address in the United States. All of the folks in rural areas that are even somewhat remote know that the Post Office doesn’t deliver to them- they require them to get a post office box and drive into town to get their mail! The Post Office has been doing that for years while still claiming to service all addresses. UPS, and to a lesser extent FedEx, are often the only ones who drive to those homes in the country where many people even run their own businesses nowadays via the internet.

Oh really now does the UPS deliver mail to the Indians living at the bottom of the Grand Canyon? I don’t think so the mail is delivered by donkey every two weeks to the canyon floor and it’s not just mail that is delivered as well the only other way there are delivers is by military helicopter!!!

Another alternative is the medical system run by the Indian tribes. The one that controls where I live, the Choctaws, is a joke. You get free eyeglass lenses, every two years, but not frames??? No contact lenses, no Lasik surgery. Dental care only once every 6 months. You can only see doctors 4 days of the week, without an appointment. I’m not a member of that tribe, so it doesn’t impact me. But from what I have been told by the Choctaw people, it sounds alot like health care rationing.

craig those are “privileges” that go back to the founding of the country. But, along with those “privileges” comes conditions. Requirement to mail, for free, anything your Senator/Congressman wants to send out. Free mail for the blind, military personnel overseas, cut rates for media mail and non-profit groups. Not to mention having to keep open over 10,000 post offices that don’t even break even, much less make a profit. As I mentioned in a previous post, require UPS and Fedex to do the same things the USPS does and they wouldn’t make a profit either. Nor would any private company that took over the responsibilities of the USPS. Europe can provide us with over 10 examples of that.

1) Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the “government” post office a private quasi-government entity? I think a little research will show that they are a private entity with government ties.

2) I know Obama was a law professor, or at least claimed to play one on TV, but he might just want to actually check US Code before opening his mouth. Technically, you can’t send “correspondance” (ie. letters) via any service except the postal service, it’s illegal to send a letter via UPS or FedEx. So they really can’t lawfully compete with letters, only bulk cargo.

3) Here’s a dirty little secret: FedEx has had a contract for Next Day/Second Day Air delivery for the US Post Office for years. The USPS doesn’t even do it themselves.

Fedex moves the mail..we unload and upload tons of mail every day thourgh out the United States..I cant speak for UPS but I am sure they have contracts as well with the post office..

The USPS has tipped into a spiral that will bring larger rate increases at shorter intervals and less service, such as no delivery on Saturdays because the cost of postage is too high and the better technology now available with internet mail and online banking.

Regular mail is the core business and revenue source with the USPS. They have priced themselves right out of the market. They have failed at doing anything to stem the hemmorage and in fact every time they raise the price of postage the hemorage gets worse.

We should do away with the USPS and let FEDEX, UPS and others do it all. I would bet prices would come down and stockholders will make a fortune. Just get the government out.

Bob The USPS has a contract with both Fedex and UPS, as well as private airlines, because the government prohibits the USPS from owning it’s own aircraft. As for the “quai-government” part, the USPS was a Federal agency until 1974. It still is, except for some semantics. Postal employees come under Federal retirement, and their checks are marked “Treasury of the United States of America.” Plus you try messing with one and see how long it takes them to send you to Leavenworth Kansas for the next 2 too 4 years. Sounds like a government agency to me.

I can change my health insurance company if they do not provide the services I desire. If the government gets involved and they choose the best course of action for me how will I ever get them out of my health care? I vote NO on any federal government health care program. The VA care stinks, Medicare stinks, the post office stinks. Why would anyone want the Government to run any part health care?

As a side note: as a FedEx employee and crewmember, we ALREADY carry almost all of the USPS Priority Mail. FedEx signed a 7 yr, $7BN contract in Sept ‘01 to carry postal freight and priority mail. That’s why you see FedEx drop boxes at almost all Post Offices. Since that ‘01 contract, we have renewed a new contract with the USPS through 2013 and to keep the politicians in KY and GA happy, UPS has also signed a similar contract with the USPS.

In effect, FedEx and UPS ALREADY carry the mail — and so do most passenger airlines too (but they are weight and size restricted for security purposes…)

Mr. Obama is out of touch with reality. Though the Post Office has been losing money, for me, the service has been wonderful. I routinely receive First Class letters in Atlanta from Los Angeles in only two days. I receive my Netflix DVD’s from the Atlanta metro distribution hub on the next business day after ordering it on-line. So I have no complaints with the Post Office. They are doing just fine in my opinion.

Why would the average citizen not expect the U.S. Post Office to do well, it has a monoply on the mail. There is no incentive to improve or be productive. One reason that Fedex and UPS is doing very good is that they can deliver o-n t-i-m-e! The only reason the post office offers some of their services is because of competition from those two companies.
Whenever I hear of some government person complaining about their work load, I just have to laugh, because no government organization has to compete for anything!

I work for the Post Office! It collects its revenue like a private business. The problem is it is RUN BY THE GOVERNMENT! A local postmaster can’t make any decisions without going up the food chain to finally get permission from some Gov’t official or Gov’t board. Sound familiar? Welcome to Gov’t run health care! I can tell you, there are more employees of the USPS than you think who would love to see it get out from under the Gov’t and be bought by UPS or FEDEX, or some other PRIVATE company. But the Postal Unions contribute tons of cash to Congress(Dems) to maintain its monopoly and protections! I haven’t talked to a carrier yet who isn’t in favor of going to a 5 day delivery week. UPS and FEDEX, which are enjoying profits, are free enterprise private corporations, capitalism in action. The U.S. Postal Service, which is losing money, is a government corporation. See the parallel here to health care? A free enterprise capitalist health care system, properly regulated, is a much better and less costly system of health care than goverenment socialism. We just need to reform it somewhat to eliminate a lot of little-value-added middlemen taking profits; and fraud in the hospital, nursing home, and other aspects of the health care industry, all of which cause health care costs to rise. Finally, the number of 40 million+ uninsured is being tossed around, but millions of those are very healthy young people who have just graduated and are looking for jobs with health benefits, which they will find within a year, or else young healthy people transitioning from one job to another.

Federal Reserve – The federal reserve is an agency that controls monetary policy not a government program. They have 2 central goals, keep the employment rate high while keeping the rate of inflation low.

The FAA is a regulatory agency not a government program.

I know Obama was trying to make a point that private companies can compete effectively with government entities, but he ultimately proved a point. Profit motive in the private sector means better service at lower prices. In short, the customer pays a fair price for what they get. Profit motive is absent in government, thus constituents get what their elected officials decide to take from a minority and give to the masses. The entire healthcare debate is centered around villifying the evil rich people who should be paying for “insurance” for the downtrodden. In one breath, the current government healthcare system (medicare/medicaid) is broken; the next breath spews forth the claim that putting more people into the system will fix it. Using our president’s analogy, we should force people to start using the post office for their mail needs. This way, nobody gets what they want, but the government entity can expand and survive with increased direct and indirect public subsidy. My opinion in a nutshell is that government programs (like the post office) should be a last resort that fills a gap that private enterprise cannot meet. Want to send a letter 1000 miles and can’t afford the $9 to do it overnight? The post office will do it for $0.44 (and perhaps $0.05 in direct subsidy)and it will be delivered at the government’s leisure. I would like to protect my right to pay for the health coverage that I have now, instead of sacrificing my quality of care to subsidize somebody else’s. I am selfish, but I have a hard time understanding why somebody has more right to my money to pay for their insurance than I do.

I am a 25 year veteran of the usps and can tell you from experience that it is run by morons with no business sense. The latest great idea is to cut off the supply of stamps to the retail units so customers can’t get the stamps they need and must buy them online. We are forced to follow a script with every customer which does nothing but piss them off. They intentionally understaff the window to inconvenience customers so they will use the automated machines. If you notice after rate changes 1 and 2 cent stamps are impossible to find. Just some examples of a government “business” at work.

And to solve any problem like the Post Office’s problem 15 or 20 of our elected officials and their families will go to some island in the pacific for a couple of weeks and study their mail system and when they come back they will call all the baseball players together and ask them if they used drugs. And there are a lot of baseball players so this will take a few months and by then it will be time to collect some money from the lobbyists so they will be able to buy enough votes to get reelected.

Just to clear up some B.S. by some people posting who know nothing about transportation OR government.It is in UPS and FedEx’s charter tha they are prohibited from carrying first class mail. It is only the Post Office that is allowed to. Both UPS and FedEx operate 6 days a week, and even deliver on Sundays if they are backed up by natural disasters or large problems and need to catch up- something the Post Office NEVER does. By the way watch after the next hurricane or other major disaster and see how quickly UPS and FedEx restore service compared to the post office. UPS is often running within several days while the post office has people picking up their mail at the Postal station only after several weeks have gone by, and delivery service takes even longer. Taxpayers pay for the Post offices benefits and retirements since they are paid out of tax money regardless of whether they are losing money. THE MONEY DOESN’T APPEAR MAGICALLY DOES IT? Contrast that with the hundreds of millions of dollars that UPS and FDX pay INTO the government every year. The Post Office pays no federal taxes on the millions of gallons of fuel they use every month, no property taxes on their buildings or property, no ad valorum taxes on their equipment, no social security/FICA taxes on their employees, no workers compensation charges, no road use taxes or fees, and no parking tickets either. Is that a level playing field with private industry when your largest cost items are covered by the government? ALL innovations in the transportation industry, from tracking packages, to service guarantees, to hand held computer devices, to the use of planes to accomplish faster and faster transit times are, without a single exception, initiated by the private companies. Many postal facilities operate with equipment that is decades behind what UPS Yet even with the post office running with what amounts to huge multi billion dollar subsidies every year they are operating at huge losses anyway. And that is payed by taxpayers ib what is essentially a hidden tax as are all subsidies, tariffs, government rebate programs et cetera. The government has no money except for what is taken from you- the taxpayer.

That is the way of almost every place in the world. Unless the government ratchets down on the freedoms of choice for citizens, it will stay that way. One word about the US Postal service… I put an important letter in my mailbox and after several days of the mailman not picking it up [my work schedule prevented me from taking it immediately to the post office, myself], I called the post office to see if there was a problem with my mail carrier.
I was told that it wasnt the mail carrier’s job to pick up the mail. They only deliver the mail. EXACT QUOTE, folks. Our tax dollars hard at work.

I don’t understand how ‘big pictur’e is an answer to my original question. Everyone’s arguement is based on the idea that this will end private insurance. You are saying that by letting this happen the n the long run or the big picture we will be giving in to the government, but their is no facts to back that up. If anything a crappy government plan will only empower the private ones.Every singel government program (that can make money) has private competition. Even the army has a private option(Backwater) that is making a ton of money.
My point about hospice care has nothing to do with faith in government, all I’m saying is that it is something that already exists on the private level.

No, there are many reasons to oppose this health care “overhaul”, the fact it will put most private insurance companies out of business is just one of them.

Runing the Gov’t is like running a business, or better yet, like running a not-for-profit business – As a business owner, when you think about spending more money and /or offering more benefits you must first think about how it will affect the cost of goods, then think about how it will affect the retail price of your product. There comes a point when offering too many benefits, too many pay raises, etc can put you out of business! (Auto mfgrs, Banks, Invest. firms for example. Thank you in part to the labor unions)
In a sense, this is what our govt has done. And it’s not the puppet (Bush/Obama), but the puppetteers! And we voted for them! Speaking out at town hall meetings is our right as citizens. The is a workable health care plan out there, just not the one being presented now.
My point is look deep into the Senate and the Congress, take time to really understand what those we voted for claimed and what they’re actually doing (or not doing). You will find mostly that they’re running the business out of business but rather than fix it with the “tough love” thats needed, they continually try to band-aid fix they’re shortcomings with takes and more taxes and more taxes. And this is certain to put this business out of business. Let’s start impeaching our senators and congressmen for failure to run a successful business! Lets hit ‘em hard! You may think a government plan is right, I think it wrong, this legislation is yet another straw on an already overloaded camel’s back. I don’t like government imposed, but taxpayer financed bailouts, buyouts, rescues and stimulus packages that have been stuffed down my throat. It is another instance of BIG government taking another private piece of my life by telling me what I can and can’t do…and get this…they are making me pay for it. How would you personally benefit, if at all, from this Health Care Plan?

Actually, the postal service is not a federal agency. Not completely anyway. It is actually a semi-independent company, which runs and regulates itself without government intervention. It does get money from the government each year to “compensate USPS for postage-free mailing for all legally blind persons and for mail-in election ballots sent from US citizens living overseas. A portion of the funds also pays USPS for providing address information to state and local child support enforcement agencies, and for keeping some rural posts offices in operation.” The USPS also does not have to pay taxes.

As is typical of all big companies these days, the higher up gets HUGE bonuses while the mail carriers, especially rural carriers, don’t even get enough mileage pay to cover their gas expenses, much less maintenance on their vehicles, which they provide to work in…

Believe me, my family works for the postal service. With the way they get screwed at work each day, maybe I wish the government WAS running the show…

omstrat… Health insurance reform is not all about giving out free health care. Yes, some will be subsidized, but not all. Take me, for example. I don’t have health insurance through my employer. I have tried to buy individual health insurance, but have been turned down, and it is impossible to buy dental insurance in my state. In my area, there are no other jobs. I could probably get a job at a local grocery which offers insurance, but i would be making about 1/3 what I am now and would quickly have to file bankruptcy, even if I was able to get a second part time job. Relocation is not an option for me right now because of health and family concerns.

I don’t want anything for free. I just want access.

I know that there are those out there who think that they’re owed something. I am a Democrat and I’ll tell you that I think they’re wrong. I am not for free health care for all, but I am for affordable and accessible health care. But, I am also for helping someone when they’re down. I’m for cracking down on those who abuse the system. But, I know several on the flip side of the that argument… Rich folks who are able to invent and get creative with tax shelters each year… while vacationing oncruises disguised as business trips, writing it all off, claiming losses when they’ve actually shown a profit, and getting big huge tax refunds every year… I’m pretty sure that not all people who think they’re owed something or will cheat to get what they want are poor and lazy…

Lastly, if you all think that government run health care is so wrong, then I assume you will all refuse to take part in Medicare when you’re old enough to qualify for it.

If UPS and FedEx are doing so well, why is the post office delivering the “last mile” for them. We get pallets of parcels that UPS and FEDEx won’t touch because it costs them too much to stop at so many households. Hmmm? They pay us to deliver these parcels.
