Do I have a right to choose NOT to have health insurance AND to go without medical care in an emergency? Or what about the freedom to choose NOT to have health insurance and then to allow my assets to be used to pay for medical care after an emergency?
The core question here is, is this a “free” country or not? Is the government going to force me to buy something I may never use? People in prison get free health care at taxpayer expense. So if people are incarcerated for not having health insurance, I still have to subsidize their health care, PLUS I have to pay the costs of keeping them in prison. What we need to do is just kill anyone who doesn’t have health insurance so they’re no longer a burden on society. After all, you aren’t allowed to drive a car if you don’t get auto insurance. If you don’t get health insurance, then you should be allowed to live.

Remember, the basic purpose of auto insurance is to protect the OTHER PERSON. Typically only liability is required which it to replace / repair / fix other people’s property and medical to pay for other people’s injuries. Granted, full comprehensive coverage is available but is only mandated when a lender requires it as part of a loan.
Plus, people don’t use auto insurance for every bit of maintenance and repair of their car. Can you imagine putting in a claim every oil change or every time you replace a bulb? Auto insurance premiums would be through the roof if we did, yet this is the model being used in the health care arena.
But we can’t be surprised they can’t seem to get their facts straight. Hell, they are also putting the reason for this contrived emergency at the feet of G.W. Bush and the insurance companies, all while praising their own, like the late Sen Kennedy, for their efforts in fixing the system. But remember, this is nothing new. In fact, they gave us the system we have today – not Pres Bush, not the insurance companies- government did it.
Back in the early 70’s when government (both republicans and democrats) wanted to do something to fix the rising cost of health care (also brought on by govt interjection into the private sector). So the left, including Sen Kennedy, suggested the government should pay for everyone’s health care, and put forth the idea of the HMO.
Now, we are supposed to trust them to fix the system they created.

People should be allowed to opt out, but if they do we simply don’t offer them public health insurance benefits. They pay out of pocket if they chose to be uninsured and need heath care. It’s the same thing we have today.
