Without the bombings, due to a senseless attack on American soil, and the outlook of millions of more casualties due to a prolonged outlook for war, the decision to drop the two atomic bombs on Japan was both difficult but at the same time a necessary evil!!!! And by not defending this action, you dishonor the lives of every American soldier that gave their lives defending our freedoms and liberties from foreign aggression!!!
It was about saving 50 thousand to 1 million American combat causalties when we had to invade the Japanese mainland, not about the 200,000 to 4 million Japanese soldiers who would have died. The grand total would have been 250,000 to 5 million combat dead if the war had not ended when it did due to the use of the A bomb.
Americans should not be concerned about what Japan thinks about it – they started the war with us, China, and most of Southeast Asia. The Japanese are professional victims and whiners so typical of American liberal leftist dimocrats. Losing the war with America is the best thing that ever happened to them.

I and about 200,000 other servicemen were beginning preparations for the invasion of
japan. We had just completed the invasion of okinawa, the bloodiest battle of the pacific
campaign.It was an open secret the war department estimated 60 to 70 thousand army, navy and air force casualties in the final battle; invasion of the japanese homeland.It was august 1945. We were in subic bay Phillipenes when we learned of the first bomb drop, around the 6th.The Japanese high command wouldn’t seek peace talks until about a week later, when the second bomb was dropped.They still stalled about 4 to 5 days before agreeing to surrender.My ship, uss.teton was the sixth ship entering tokyo bay on aug. 29.Surrender ceremonies were september 2.I never heard one shipmate say, “we shouldn’t
have dropped the bombs”.
It’s interesting how so much of history has been forgotten, or worse… re-written. It’s also interesting how “citizens” have somehow come to the conclusion that wars can be fought cleanly and that only soldiers should die (as if that is somehow OK). We’ve PC’d everything including war. Well my friends, war is dirty, its rotten , it’s horrible and people die… and not just soldiers! Folks seem to have forgotten that when one nation/people declare war on another nation/people, it’s not only the soldiers who get involved. What about all the factory workers who build tanks and planes and ammunitions? And in most cases, the will of the people to be in the war is the only thing that keeps the nation in the war.
The goal of any nation should be to ensure that their nation wins the war and that the fewest number of their own people die in the process. If it takes a 1,000 of the enemy’s citizen to die to prevent one of their own from being killed, so be it..!!! Every nation SHOULD expect that if they pick a fight with another nation then the whole of their people, their whole existence is in jeopardy..!!!! For Japan to have picked a fight with US and to expect US to fight the clean fight is stupid. As far as I am concerned it should have been our leader’s opinion, no, it should have been their GOAL to ensure that we do everything in our power to stop AMERICAN people (yes, even the soldiers) from dying even at the cost of the entirety of Japan. How many wars would not be started or supported if the people of the countries involved knew that there was a high probability that they would be anialated?
I personally think that every leader SHOULD make it clear that if you attack their country then they will hit you hard, swift and without hesitation for the fact that your people will die. Someone here asked “what was he supposed to say?”, as if the only thing he could possibly do was to applogize… well, my answer to that question is that what he should have said was that America wants to be a friend of the world and that when nations work together with us then we intend to be honorable and good friends. On the other hand, if a nation treats us as an enemy and attacks us then we will be a terrible foe as evidenced by the fact that Japan attacked America and America made them pay to the point that they couldn’t stomach any more of their own death (remember, they were fine with as many Americans dying as they could generate). He should have also said… “Anyone hits us, we’ll hit them back harder..!!! They kill one of ours we’ll kill 100 of theirs.” And he should have said that no one should ever forget the lessons of WWII. He might also mention the fact that America played a huge part in funding the rebuilding of the two cities that were nuked.
And the same person asked “How can anyone defend dropping atomic weapons on civilian targets?”. I can easily defend it because that was the only thing then that would stop the Japanese leaders from waging war on AMERICA. Again, don’t pick a fight and then complain because the one that you picked that fight with kicked your butt. Besides, if you read your old history books (not sure the informations in the new books), America told them that we had the weapon and that if they didn’t end the war we would drop it on their cities. What’s interesting is the Japanese leaders let a second bomb drop before finally ending the war. Why not give in after just one bomb? One would think that the lives of their own people would have been more important than that. The fact is that it was only after they (Japanese leaders) knew that they had lost the support of their citizenry that they had to end the war.
War should not be clean and isolated to only the soldiers. It should hurt, and hurt bad. Everyone should have a chance to die if their country picks a fight with another. And I know, I know… America is engaged in a war in two theaters… so you want to know if I think we American citizens should have the opportunity to die. Well, I recall that we did have @ 5,000 of our citizens (not soldiers) die on 9/11. And, there have been many other attempts made to kill American citizens since then (unsuccessfully until the terrorist attach at Fort Hood). I expect that our country be diligent to protect against attacks on our citizens because the bad guys who don’t like us would absolutely love to kill some of our citizens..!!! I wonder how well the bad guys that we are fighting in the middle east would be able to hide amongst the “good people” in Iraq and Afghanistan if THE PEOPLE knew that the fact that they are “citizens” and not soldiers wouldn’t stop us from dropping carpet bombs on their villages? Cruel? Yep. End the war sooner with less Americans dying? Probably.
Of course the best way to end wars for good would be if we let only the politicians arm themselves and face their opponent politicians on the battlefield. Let’s make it so that only the politicians are the ones to face death, and let’s see how many wars there would be.

The bombing of Hirosima and Nagasaki are historic and actions of wartime leaders. Given the facts of Japanese resistance on Iwo Jima, Okinawa as well as the horrors of other islands and perverse destruction in the Philippines, the decision was correct.
The real question is where does the world go from hear. Nuclear proliferation is a fact. More nations are becoming nuclear powers and time does not stand still or run backwards. Iran will become the next nuclear power and eventually Japan will become a nuclear power.
So many more Japanese (and of course AMericans, British, Austrailians, etc) would have died than did at Hiroshima and Nagasaki had their been an invasion of Japan. Ah but revisionist history is one of the things Marxists are all about isn’t it?

Fact. My father and my husbands father expected to be deployed to Japan before the bombs were dropped. My husband’s father was in a unit that was expected to experience 100% fatalities. Japan started the war and was not admitting defeat. Seems to me it was self defense.
Can’t we admit it was harsh but necessary? There are moments in history that are sad but inevitable. We’re in one now and why do we have to justify self-defense because our leaders don’t think we have a right to exist? When terrorist thugs are pointing a gun at me I don’t much care about a stammering, evasive, wimp standing next to me parsing out whether I have a unique perspective.

Obama was so anxious to get to the question about North Korea that you couldn’t help but think he was about to say “God_D America!” at any moment if things didn’t move along quickly.
Both sides have agreed that the dropping of the Hiroshima bomb was necessary to stop the war. Japan would have never stopped fighting right down to the last man. It is sad that so many civilians died, but it did stop the war. As for the Nagasaki bomb, there has been speculation that it was not necessary, and that Japan was in the process of surrendering when this second bomb was dropped. Some have even said it was “pay back for Pearl Harbor”, but it is all history now.
The U.S. did render immediate aid, and helped in the rebuilding of the infrastructure of Japan. Not something too many “victors” in war would have done to a defeated enemy.
I have a question. Did any of Obama’s relatives ever serve in the military, or risk their lives for America?

There is no real Defense of Killing civilians EVER. Combat should be between armies. Lincoln began this Modern day total war against his own people, and it has steamrolled from there. At least the US military today tries to avoid civilian loses.

A big thing people never mention is that the Japanese government had enlisted the Japanese people as soldiers in their war against the free world. They trained women and children with weapons and ordered them to attack and kill the enemy. That means the Japanese Government eliminated their civilian population. This tactical decision made every city — including Hiroshima and Nagasaki — legitimate military targets.
A Marine who fought from island to island against the Japanese survived these battles but considered himself and his company the walking dead. They would have to face the enemy again on the islands of Japan. In his heart he knew he would not survive. The bombs were dropped and the war ended. He was saved by the brutal devastation. He felt selfish to be happy to be alive when so many thousands died.
My mother was beaten by the Japanese to force her to speak Japanese during the WWII occupation of Korea when she was a 5 yrs old. America and the bombs liberated Korea as the Japanese fled in panic. Later the North Korean communists descended and again the Americans saved my mother. I am American and I owe much to America. Let them try to leverage the bombs as a ploy to revise history and to paint America as the aggressor. One saved American soldier’s life was worth it, then, now and forever. America first.
I live in Japan and have for 16 years and every Japanese I talked to young and old but especially the old are so grateful for america. They gave freedom to women, the soldiers were nice to them when we occupied Japan right after WWII and yes many saw their families destroyed but they are smart enough to know that it was their military style Government who put young boys in torpedos that were aimed at the USA boats with drugs injecting into them right before they were forced to commit harikari for their leaders who were really bad people. The Emperor who they thought was a God and deeply disappointed them when they found out that he was human like they were. They believed in him but when they lost they were shocked. Because of America, Japan was given a constitution, much like the USA, and opportunity to become the number one economic power in the 1980s and 90’s until their government started spending and became corrupt like America Government is today. It is never the people who are bad but the one’s who govern if left unchecked and who gain power and misuse that power.

I have a question. Did any of Obama’s relatives ever serve in the military, or risk their lives for America?
Almost everyone I know had a father or grandfather who did, or did so themselves.
I am often appalled at the ignorance and heartlessness of the far right.
Obama’s grandfather marched in Patton’s army,in WWII.His uncle was part of the American brigade that helped to liberate Buchenwald.

I was stationed in Japan when the Movie Pearl Harbor came out over there. History has been re-written in the all the Japanese Text Books purposely leaving out the fact that Japan Attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. When the Pearl Harbor Movie came out there was a lot of disbelief in Japan. One of my Japanese English speaking buddies talked to me about it. I told him to go to any Non-Japanese/American website and look up history there. He later came back and apologized to me for the Attack on Pearl Harbor. Also there were Protesters in front of my Base Month. After the movie got released, no more protesters. The U.S. was a Neutral country before the Pearl Harbor Attack. The only ones fighting the war were the ones that felt they should get involved. Pearl Harbor brought America into the war, and WE finished it. I Guess Obama doesn’t see that part. Figures since all he knows about U.S. history is what he learned from his Muslim Teachers and Communist buddies.

My Father was a co-pilot on a B-25 bomber. Towards the end of the war he was flying the bombing missions over Japan that some have mentioned here. He saw the mushroom cloud of the first bombing. Now well into his 80’s, he has never talked much about the war, especially when I was younger and wanted to know “what my dad did in the war”.
He has said that he would have hoped the atomic bombings would have never HAD to take place because of what it did to future generations. That being said, he knew that it was the solution to ending the war because the horror of invading Japan would bring even larger casualties.
He knew the enemy would not just surrender. It was an enemy that would fight to the death. The emperor was a god and they would give their lives for the emperor. In this country, most are unable tot understand that kind of mentality.
It does sound a bit familiar. Go ahead, call it a “mental instability”, call it what ever you want. Too bad we don’t learn from the past. Oh, that’s right, it’s all different today…

I doubt that Bama actually knows any of the history of the war with Japan and was caught completely unprepared to speak on it. His handlers let him down on this one by not preparing him for this certainty. Since he has kow-towed and apologized for all actual or percieved transgressions by America all over the world, naturally the Japanese thought he might be willing to apologize for bombing them during the war they started with American and Asia. They never seem to remember that simple fact.
The Japanese have been trying to get an apology from us for decades. They do not however seek apologies from China, Phillipines, Vietnam, Burma, and all the rest they devastated in Asia with death tolls due to the Japanese of millions.
We owe them nothing. The 105,000 they lost in that time of war to the atomic bombs saved millions in lost lives in Japanese and American soldiers. Their post war association with the United States has made them the most advanced country in Asia and a close second only to the US in economy and technology. Our relationship to Japan has been the most supportive and benevelent of any nation on the Earth. They are a free and independent country and their asociation with America is voluntary and mutually beneficial.

The invasion of Japan would have made the D-Day invasion look like a day trip. Go to the D-Day museum in New Orleans and look for Operation Olympia.

Conventional firebombs in other cities killed more people than the nukes did. America has NO reason to apologize for using nuclear weapons. Dave, the estimations of American loss are 500,000- 1,000,000 casualties for the invasion. The Japanese had prepared every household with weapons and had taught the women and children to use spears. The Japanese loss of LIFE was predicted at 5-10 MILLION. You are astute in all your observations.

God, do any of you know your own history?
First, the attack on Pearl Harbor was never intended to be a surprise attack with no warning. Unfortunately, on December 6, 1941, the Japanese Embassy staff had the day off for a Japanese national holiday. The entire secretarial staff was drunk or partying when the 14 part message from the Japanese government declaring war on the USA arrived. The ambassador and his aid, not trained in typing and decoding, did all the work themselves. After re-typing page after page to get rid of all typographical mistakes, and even then still missing a few, realized they were late for their 11:00 am meeting with Cordell Hull, and didn’t arrive at the State Department until 12:45 pm. At this point it took 25 more minutes to get in to Secretary Hull. When Hull did arrive, after hearing of the start of the attack on Pearl, then reading the 14 part message declaring war 15 minutes to late to do anything, he confronted the ambassador and his aid declaring treachery on the part of the Japanese Government. Unfortunately, for the Ambassador, he had know idea that his government had planned an attack on Pearl. If the Ambassador had arrived in time for his appointment, the US government would have had at least an hour to issue a war warning to all of their bases, which moved the bases alert status to active ship search with aircraft, Base CAP, harbors cleared, ships at general quarters, airfields on air attack warning, and communication and early warning moved to a war footing. By chance and ill planning, the Japanese went from carrying out a brilliant and stunning attack on a foreign military power, they instead ended up being declared war criminals.
As to the final invasion of Japan, the invasion was code named OPERATION DOWNFALL, to be complete within one year of the end of the war in Europe, and consisted of two major components.
* Olympic . November 1, 1945. Invasion of Southern Kyushu to provide a large base for naval and air forces within range of Tokyo.
* Coronet . March 1, 1946. Invasion of Central Honshu and Tokyo.
Between the two, the estimates in casualties added up to over one million men MIA, KIA, and wounded. This was without consideration of the Japanese attack plan which involved over 15,000 planes to kamikaze attack the invasion fleet. They also planned on military units intermixed with civilians armed with bamboo spears and bow and arrows to mass rush the beach heads to throw the invaders back into the water. It would have been a slaughter. The Japanese High Command gave conservative estimates of twenty million casualties and two million US casualties to repulse the invasion and with another forty million before they would be utterly defeated. These numbers shocked the Emperor into doing something that had almost never happened before in Japanese history, the Emperor decided to Rule instead of Reign. The Emperors usually served as the religious godhead to the Japanese people, the Emperor left the actual rule up to the Privy Council and the Prime Minister, but this time it was different. After seeing the massive casualties and realizing that the Japanese people could be wiped out as a people, he ordered the Privy Council to seek peace. He told them to contact the US government and seek a deal even if it meant that the Emperors position was ended. The first contacts to ending the war were going out as the first bomb landed on Hiroshima. To the deniers of Hiroshima not being a military target, you are wrong.
During World War II, Hiroshima was a city of considerable military importance. It contained the 2nd Army Headquarters, which commanded the defense of all of southern Japan. The city was a communications center, a storage point, and an assembly area for troops. To quote a Japanese report, “Probably more than a thousand times since the beginning of the war did the Hiroshima citizens see off with cries of ‘Banzai’ the troops leaving from the harbor.”
The center of the city contained a number of reinforced concrete buildings as well as lighter structures. Outside the center, the area was congested by a dense collection of small wooden workshops set among Japanese houses; a few larger industrial plants lay near the outskirts of the city.
The houses were of wooden construction with tile roofs. Many of the industrial buildings also were of wood frame construction. The city as a whole was highly susceptible to fire damage.
The population only numbered 255,000 based on records from the numbers used for food vouchers to feed the city pre-bombing.
The city of Nagasaki had been one of the largest sea ports in southern Japan and was of great war-time importance because of its many and varied industries, including the production of ordnance, ships, military equipment, and other war materials. The narrow long strip attacked was of particular importance because of its industries.
In contrast to many modern aspects of Nagasaki, the residences almost without exception were of flimsy, typical Japanese construction, consisting of wood or wood-frame buildings, with wood walls with or without plaster, and tile roofs. Many of the smaller industries and business establishments were also housed in wooden buildings or flimsily built masonry buildings.
Nagasaki had been permitted to grow for many years without conforming to any definite city zoning plan and therefore residences were constructed adjacent to factory buildings and to each other almost as close as it was possible to build them throughout the entire industrial valley.
Between the two cities, using the high end total of 365,000 total deaths and casualties from 1945 – 1995, this was a minuscule number compared to the estimated 21 – 22 Million casualties if operation Downfall had been carried out.
For those stating that it was the Russians declaring war that forced surrender, it wasn’t. It was the second bomb on Nagasaki that convinced the Japanese government to acquiesce to the Emperors wishes wholeheartedly. By this point, Truman had been informed of the Japanese desire to surrender without a need to protect the Emperors position, and he decided to accept the surrender but keep the Emperor in his position as a constitutional Monarchy. This recognition was also asked for by McCarthur, who knew as the soon to be Military Governor of Japan, he would need the Emperors position in place to make the transition easier to US rule. The surrender speech was announced on August 14, 1945 to the Japanese people, and even this involved controversy. Some of the generals wanted to grab the recording of the Emperor and force him to rescind his decision to surrender. The Emperors staff smuggled a recording out in some laundry and had it brought to the radio station for broadcast. As soon as the broadcast was heard by the mutinying generals, they gave up and surrendered. The Russians declared war on Japan August 8, 1945 two days after the first bomb. They invaded Manchuria hours after the second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki August 9, 1945.
The Russians knew of the peace deal being made because of their own diplomat in Japan who was a Russian spy, Richard Sorge. They declared war to get in on the spoils with barely firing a shot to actually help the pacific war. A state of war still exists between the two, and Russia still holds the Kuril and Sakhalin islands to this day.
The US never needs to apologize for dropping the two bombs. To save 22,000,000 lives at the cost of 365,000, was not a decision that merits the claim of being immoral or wrong.

Jan, please read my previous post. It was the 2nd Army HQ for southern Honshu Island. An Army is composed of Divisions. As you can see an Army Group HQ was worth more than a Div HQ. Your other points I covered also. The difference though, between Pearl and Hiroshima, was that Pearl was a strictly military target. Hiroshima, due to the overwhelming numbers of Mom and Pop businesses predominate throughout the city that constructed components for planes and guns, required a large attack or the A Bomb, to destroy the cities industrial capacity. Again, the attack on Pearl was never meant to be a surprise attack without a declaration of war first. It was also to be an attack on a military target only. Due to a miss-communication between the attacking planes lead plane, and the following level bombers, the bombers dropped their loads on the fuel supply tanks instead of on battleship row.
The lead plane fired one flare to signal they had achieved surprise, and on this signal the zeros were to break off close cover and instead strafe the airfields. The lead Zero did not respond, so the attack commander fired a second one, which the Zeros then responded to by breaking off and diving. Unfortunately, the level bombers seeing both flares, took this to mean that they were to break off and attack the fuel stores instead of the ships at anchor. The smoke rising from these fuel fires caused some of the bombers to become confused and dropped in the wrong areas. During the battle, there was only reports of 2 groups of 3 planes each, dropping bombs in a civilian neighborhood and the base hospital. If not for the smoke, there probably would not have been any civilian casualties caused by the Japanese. Of the 2,386 Americans killed, 55 were civilians, and most were killed by unexploded American anti-aircraft shells landing in civilian areas.
Finally, as to initiating the war on the Japanese part, you need to read some history texts covering Japan from 1900 to 1945. I could write a book on this part, but please take my word on this; the Japanese did not want war. They were pushed into it because of the intransigent stubbornness of their Military, and pro military politicians. As well as, the US’s failure to deal with the Japanese over the China problem with a greater willingness to listen and understand the Japanese problems involved, instead the US took a hard stance and a dictatorial tone. These were the two greatest factors pushing the two towards war. With miss-communication in their dealings, and a lack of trust between the two negotiating parties, as well as the Japanese government trying to make decisions without even listening to advice from their own ambassador on the scene 14,000 miles away, it can be easily understood how the two sides could push each other towards war. Add to this, Cordell Hulls own racial bias towards the Japanese, which was reflected in his decision making process in the deliberations of the two powers, where he would refer to them in private as slant eyed, devious, liars, and thought they were racist towards whites. He also refused to listen to the US governments preeminent expert on Japan, the American Ambassador in Japan, who had lived there 15 years and was married to a Japanese woman, spoke both formal and common Japanese, and understood the Japanese power players and political structure better than any other westerner. Hull was also receiving the Japanese governments secret communications because the US had broken the Japanese Diplomatic Code back in 35.
Unfortunately, because Formal Japanese which was used in all Japanese Diplomatic communications was rarely taught in the US and the more common form was, the translators were misinterpreting the messages. Where one would say, “a 2″ thick, T-Bone steak cooked on the grill”, the translators would read, “a piece of dessicated cow flesh, burned over fire”. This caused Hull and his advisers to question the true intent of real attempts by the Japanese government to come to a peaceful resolution. What they were being told and shown, didn’t fit what they were secretly reading so they assumed the worst, instead of assuming that what the were told was truthful. Sadly, misinterpretations like these, can sometimes lead to war.

another low point in the history of President Zero. Defending the atomic bombs dropped in Japan is one of the easiest things, ever. Dropping those two bombs saved more lives than anything. I’m sure the Japanese are also thankful the war was ended abruptly and not with us invading them. Millions more Japanese lives would of been lost had we landed troops on their beaches like we did in Europe.
If we’re lucky this disgrace of a man will be impeached before 2012, he’s well on his way.

More civilians died in the firebombing of Tokyo than did in the atomic blasts. Had we not dropped the bombs and invaded, estimates were 1.5 million U.S. casualties, 4 to 6 million Japanese dead. The Japanese were training to fight to the last person standing. The bombs however horrible, were the right decision.
Also realize, the Japanese had detonated their own nuke about 2 weeks before the US struck. The Japanese had their own “Manhattan Project” in captured Korean territory and had been working on it for years. They would have used the bomb on us if they would have had one available and a delivery system to do the trick.

what the hell are you talking about. There is no apologist rhetoric in my posting. What I stated are facts, not the drivel you state. I never said that the Japanese were justified in going to war with the US, I stated the reasons for how both sides pushed each other towards war. Japan could have avoided war by choosing 10 – 15 years of poverty instead of attacking. Just as well, the US could have avoided war by dealing with the Japanese in a more open and honest manner than what they did. Both sides made bad choices, but the Japanese must take final responsibility for the outbreak of war.
As to a holy war, smoke another Bong full. It was not a war pushed by religion, it was a militarist war pushed by the Japanese military. Also, your casualty counts are way off, mine are based on the War Departments own estimations, and the Japanese High commands own military evaluations, not on what you read on wikipedia.
As to Japanese detonating a nuke, what kind of pot are you smoking, I would like some. The Japanese were 10 to 15 years away from any type of nuclear device. In fact, they never pushed a Manhattan type project, because their own scientists said it was beyond cost for any nation to build one, so they never even started a program. I think you have been reading to many conspiracy theories on your web site.
