The arrest was an overreaction and stupid. I don’t care how good an officer is, if he can’t just leave when he was done with the investigation and chose to arrest a man at his own house for yelling, he is dumb and a terrible officer. I bet Gates wishes he could keep the tax revenue that goes to this police department and spend it on his own private police, a police that cares about him and lets him vent if he feels they have treated him wrong.

Free Country? America a country where if you yell at a police officer in your own home, after he has completed his investigation, and you’re not impeding his investigation, you get arrested. And they act like they were upset that in Iran the police were using tear gas and arresting people protesting in the streets, calling it human rights violation. WELL WE CAN’T PROTEST IN OUR OWN HOME IN AMERICA! The laws are suppose to protect the people from the government, but it seems like people are so focused on the fact Gates was mad, or accused the officer of racism, that they are excusing the officer for arresting a man on his front porch.

If a white man said the things Gates did and behaved the way Gates did to a police officer they would definitely be arrested the same way Gates was. Any law abiding citizen should expect that yelling at police and saying “your mama” in any context will most likely get them arrested for disorderly conduct. Most people of all races know better and are raised not to yell at police.
Crowley had to fully investigate what was going on. What if Gates was actually a hostage to an intruder in his home who had told him to confront Crowley under duress? Crowley had to spend time there and get the facts. Gates did not have to scream so loud that Crowley could not even talk on his police radio.
You should all read the actual police report before making any decisions about this.

This is like a Hollywood script: a black Havard professor who has built his entire career from books and papers describing how black males are treated differently in American society, has a conflict with a white police officer who teaches a class on racial profiling.
The professor start name calling and name dropping, then brings the cops mother into the story, but not before the “stupid” cop sets up the professor with the ole’ “lets talk about it outside your house” routine
The professor then obliges the cop and leaves his residence where he has less rights and easily gets arrestd on a slam dunk disorderly charge
but wait,… this professor is friends with the first black president of the US. The president then calls the police stupid for arresting his admitted friend…this is like a mini series

Yes, and the tie goes to the cop – deal with it – this Harvard Racist Professor was trying to encite and was held accountable for it. That’s not just freedom of speech it’s enciting or disturbing the peace. It’s a big issue because of the race baiting from the black community not a cop who was responding to a breaking and entering call.

The second officer who responded (an African American) stated that the officer went by the book and that it was Gates himself who brought it on, by behaving so belligerently. In fact, this officer gave seminars on how to avoid racial profiling and still this libs are foaming at the mouth.
The officer would be well within his rights to go after Gates for defamation and should. This is another case of political correctness run amok. Gates should apologize, as should the POTUS for elevating this so-called professor’s shenanigans to a national level.

It was ego vs ego. But… Office Crowley and other officers were responding to a possible break in call. He found someone inside the home and asked for ID, which he should have. The police report from a second office stated that Gate’s reply were “NO I WILL NOT! THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS TO BLACK MEN IN AMERICA! YOU DON’T KNOW WHO YOU’RE MESSING WITH!” I think Office Crowley was following police procedure. Only Gate and Obama made this about race at the home and on national TV. Office Crowley should have arrested Gate and he had the right to because there are disorderly conduct laws. Crowley was just doing his job and Gate was disrespecting him instead of thanking him for trying to protect his home. He didn’t know Gate live there without seeing prove. A police office is ineffective if the people do not respect them and the laws they represent. That is why Obama should have kept his mouth shut.

How do you “calibrate words differently”? In my lifetime, I have never heard anyone ever say that they should have calibrated their words differently. He said the police acted stupidly. I heard him say it. I saw him say it. He meant what he said, and said what he meant. I can’t imagine what would happen if I ever told my employer that I should have calibrated my words differently.
