New Orleans Lawmaker Proposes to Sterilize the Poor

WDSU: New Orleans State Rep. John LaBruzzo said that the program he is thinking about would be voluntary. It would pay poor women $1,000 to have their fallopian tubes tied.

Why all the fuss? People won’t be forced to be sterilized. It would be their decision. If they want babies, they would still be able to have babies.
Quit crying.

Oh my   September 25th, 2008 - 6:46 pm

If I’m pro-choice for sterilization does that mean I support a womans right to sterilize herself if she wants? Help me I get confused on these issues.

lou   September 25th, 2008 - 6:48 pm

This is a dumb idea. And is strange. Why not just reform welfare and make incentives to work. Welfare doesn’t work. Welfare should be eliminated as much as possible but sterilization efforts even voluntary seem like social Darwinism to me. Just another waste of money. End welfare and put lazy people to work.

All for it.   September 25th, 2008 - 6:50 pm

It’s cheaper than welfare.

It’s cheaper than welfare.

The people who say that it’s racist…is racist.

If you say it’s racist when somebody say: “poor, lot of babies, welfare”, then you are the racist.

anon…whats with that dumb ass remark? no one is marching these women to the clinic..they are going on their own volition, so whats the problem?

Volk   September 25th, 2008 - 7:08 pm

Payments to people from the government to get people to do what the government wants.

I like it.

Pay them not to commit crime, not to do drugs, not to be fat, not to drop out of school, not to get an abortion, not to be illegal aliens, not to protest, not to drink and drive, not to litter, not to talk back to cops, not to disrespect our brave men and women in uniform, not to be poor in the first place, and, most of all,l not to whine about government nannyism.

Steve   September 25th, 2008 - 7:16 pm

Finally – a politician with an idea that’s outside the box! I’ve always thought that sterilization after collection and storage of either sperm or egg was the way to go. If I was supreme ruler of the world, I’d personally administer a “Parent License” test before releasing the sperm or egg back to its owner. ;-)

anon   September 25th, 2008 - 7:16 pm

I guess you’re right, Bevery. It is a “solution.”

Mary   September 25th, 2008 - 7:22 pm

Believe it or not, there are middle class women that would jump at this chance..They are not on welfare, but instead working two jobs to make ends meet with either no insurance or insurance that won’t pay for the entire prodedure, therefore leaving the balance for the woman to pay, which she can’t afford. They don’t want anymore children. To me it’s better than the alternative: abortion It’s certainly not racist. Just presented very ignorantly by a young gona collegist (a little play on words). It should be offered to all women if they want it. Free birth control pills, IUD’s, etc.

Mary   September 25th, 2008 - 7:27 pm

Volk:
I think your onto something. Some states are already paying low income kids money to go to school. Imagine that?

Bout Time   September 25th, 2008 - 7:42 pm

Why should taxpayers suffer welfare queens having more children to support. Want to have 6 kids by different fathers then do it on your own nickle.

Pandoraha   September 25th, 2008 - 7:44 pm

This character must have gone to Gehenna U. to learn sterilizing the poor is a good thing. Someone should have sterilized his parents.

SanDiegoView   September 25th, 2008 - 7:49 pm

In the 20th century the states were sterilizing poor children all over the United States in the involuntary method. It did not stop here after WWII. See (Google) Edwin Black and Eugenics.

The Bush family has history of funding eugenics societies and Prescott Bush held a Third Reich passport when still doing financing business with Germany long after the U.S. had declared war.

SterilizedWonder   September 25th, 2008 - 7:56 pm

Momma always said, “Sterilized is, as sterilized does.”

Everyone in the world should be sterilized at birth. Only those who have perfect genes and can provide a great life for their child should be able to propagate.

Funny how the VAST majority of people on welfare are WHITE WOMEN. But the video shows all blacks.

Gee, there goes that made-up racism again that blacks think exoists but really doesnt.

Anyway this is a stupid idea to anybody with a brain. But seeing as though it’s an idea from the south…Im not in the least bit surprised.

Blachburn   September 25th, 2008 - 8:37 pm

I wish somebody had given Mrs LaBruzzo money to have her fallopian tubes tied with barbed wire.

Bubbala   September 25th, 2008 - 8:45 pm

Everyone (so far, previous comments) is missing the point. The video (and opinions expressed in it) are from NEW ORLEANS. The complaint is that “increasing numbers of people are seeking government-funded support” (or, welfare — living, housing, food, health and educational payments from the taxpayers).

WHO is “increasingly” populating New Orleans? People from “Latin America.”

So THE UNDERLYING PROBLEMATIC CONDITION HERE (or, rather, addressed in this video, from and about New Orleans) is that this increasing immigration issue is importing or allowing to be “self imported” (either legally or illegally) people who arrive in the U.S. without intent or ability to self-support, and with the assumption that they can be supported by others.

As to the optional “sterilization” issue — our nation isn’t producing (if New Orleans can be used as an example) (same with Chicago, Los Angeles, and a few other large urban areas) self-supporting populations, but people with “reduced fitness.”

We need to stop paying individuals (of all kinds, all locations, everywhere in this nation) to be non-supporting and to be non-productive. I’d include a moritorium on immigration (all of it) for about ten years to be reasonable.

THEN re-evaluate what’s what. So far, we’re importing or allowing to self-import most people from civilizations where the assumptions are that “the state” will or “has to” provide for them. This is a radical change from generations past, wherein immigrants arrived in the U.S. (and then reproduced here as citizens) without the assumption that anyone would or should support them. That’s the big change and why we’re literally paying people to be non-productive and dependent (bad approach overall).

This is a current issue. It was in the New Orleans newspaper on 9/23/08. I am assuming the interview with Mr. LaFonta was recent as well. If so, he should refrain from calling anyone an idiot until he has mastered the skill of reading a calendar. The year is 2008, not 2007.

Bubbala   September 25th, 2008 - 8:51 pm

ALSO, focus on WHAT produces children, or, “too many” children to the poor and dependent. Something’s obviously incentivizing too many among those who can’t or won’t support themselves, to overpopulate. What’s occuring is that the taxpayers “pay for” every child born to a dependent mother (female dependent on social services to support herself, including food, housing, educational and healthcare “programs”).

We can’t punish children for the acts and behaviors of their parents but there has to be a better way than what’s going on (in which social-services dependent females are literally paid by how many children they bear — have more children [or any children], and get an income taxfree and workfree). THAT’s why many “poor” females have children and continue to have those they clearly can’t support themselves.

For adults (both females and males) who don’t rely on social services to support themselves, who recognize their individual responsibilities in bearing and raising their children, they control themselves more astutely. Few people have child after child when they have to contend with the expenses realistically themselves.

John   September 25th, 2008 - 8:57 pm

Why not just simply cancel welfare for everybody. People should work for their money.

Bubbala   September 25th, 2008 - 9:00 pm

JN: about your statement, “the vast majority of women on welfare are WHITE…”

THE MAJORITY IN OUR POPULATION OVERALL are White. Therefore, there are “more of” any kind/behavior/condition present just because there are more White people…

Changing, however. AS I WROTE PREVIOUSLY, the issue is New Orleans here, this video, and New Orleans has been and remains “majority” Black, with increasing replacement occuring of those by Hispanics/Latinos.

I suppose you can include “Hispanics/Latinos” as “White” but few people today do so…

THE ISSUE, however, isn’t what race or ethnicity someone is BUT WHAT THEIR VALUES ARE.

The majority in New Orleans (previous, current and arriving daily) include an increasing majority of PEOPLE who ARE EXPECTANT OF BEING TAKEN CARE OF. That, I’m sure, includes all or any race or ethnicity, but in New Orleans, there’s an increasing population surge among people arriving from South and Central America. They arrive in the U.S. (New Orleans and everywhere else) with an assumption from their own civilizations that there’s some “government” or “community” providing their needs — so they seem to be assuming that the U.S. is going to be the same as Mexico (“free education” — “free doctors” etc.).

That’s a radical change in civilization from the previous and mostly “European” influenced United States, wherein welfare was something available to the disabled and elderly. That’s the changing factor (gone from being associated with the disabled and elderly citizens, to “services” that the average Joe or Josephina can and does rely on).

yo1   September 25th, 2008 - 9:03 pm

JN the vast majority are not white women. It is almost 50/50 but see blacks make up 12% of the population -I could be off with my caculation but blacks are around 5.2 times more likely to be on welfare.

Bubbala   September 25th, 2008 - 9:11 pm

yo1: I assume that “JN” was using “White” to include Latinos/Hispanics…which is misleading overall, however one figures statistics.

New Orleans isn’t a “White majority” location, obviously. And because the video (Representative and voiceover) report that “increasing numbers of people” there (in New Orleans) are reliant on welfare, that then associates the New Orleans’ increasing population with welfare.

Looking in general at WHO the “increasing population” IS in New Orleans, we see increasing arrivees and their children from Central and South America…that means, Hispanics/Latinos since few people in those locations who immigrate to the U.S. are “White” in the European/Nordic sense as to ancestry.

I read numerous reports that after Katrina, large numbers of Hispanics/Latinos began arriving and settling in Louisiana. I’d assume that’d include a certain percentage from Arizona and Oklahoma among the illegals from South/Central America in the U.S. illegally (leaving states that began enforcing immigration laws), but the “new arrivees” in New Orleans, specifically, are said to be mostly from South and Central America (and who are mostly entry-wage earners — which would explain the “surge” in dependence there on welfare by “increasing numbers of people).

AlmostThere   September 25th, 2008 - 9:16 pm

yo1:
I think I can safely assume you do not live in New Orleans or even La for that matter. I’d wager the black population is somewhat larger than you suggest in the state and am SURE it is larger in New Orleans.

All for it.   September 25th, 2008 - 9:21 pm

Who care what the race of the abusers are. We need to fix the system or set a limit.

People who are in the country illegally or have not contributed to taxes should never receive any social service.

JB   September 25th, 2008 - 9:38 pm

For all you in the liberal “herd” clamoring for socialized medicine – pay VERY close attention here. This is the classic case of how the state will turn on you when you rely on them for everything. The state cannot “love” – only a person can.

Next they’ll be talking about “culling the herd” – voluntarily of course.

“Any government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take it away” – Pres Gerald Ford

Bubbala   September 25th, 2008 - 9:39 pm

“People who are in the country illegally or have not contributed to taxes should never receive any social service.”

I AGREE (completely). HOWEVER, what happens is that illegal aliens gain access to social services “indirectly” BY HAVING CHILDREN. Their CHILDREN are aided and assisted by U.S. taxpayers, and in doing so, the parents (even illegal aliens) are supported. THUS, they’re incentivized to have as many children as possible (life-long stipend, housing, food, etc.).

demdicks   September 25th, 2008 - 9:44 pm

End all social programs completely, only resuming limited services only after being assured that never again will a single dollar of tax money will go things like ACORN, Jackson, Sharpton, Trinity United, La Raza, etc. Making these race baiters go it on their own will go far in saving money and making the perpetually indignant shut up and go to work.

Meg28   September 25th, 2008 - 9:56 pm

This is America not a third world country. I would much rather see pregnancy avoided instead of aborted. If you already have 1 or more children that you are struggling to take care of then it’s good financial incentive to prevent future pregnancy. Then people can concentrate their efforts (if they are making any to begin with) to get off welfare and make a better life for the kids they have. It would be wonderful to see people break the cycle of generation after generation on welfare. Wishful thinking I suppose…………….I think it a good option for people to take if they wish to.

Hi IP727,

Actually, I’m against abortion also. Maybe I’m an asshole, but I’m no Nazi.

You may say you are not a Nazi, but the Nazis were against abortion,

In 1936, Heinrich Himmler, Chief of the SS, created the “Reich Central Office for the Combating of Homosexuality and Abortion.” ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazism )

in 1933, in their first year of power, the Nazis passed a law forbidding abortion to Germans, increasing the penalties as they had been before Weimar liberalization.(24) The Nazis wanted to increase the birthrate so as to have soldiers for their military.

Jennifer   September 25th, 2008 - 11:16 pm

I think the voters should pitch in and have LaBruzzo STERILIZED! It would be a good deed for the state of Louisiana to prevent him from reproducing. Furthermore, I think castration might also be a good idea, to help this man keep his ideas in check. (It would be “voluntary”; wink, wink! If he agrees to voluntary exile from the U.S. and swears never to enter politics anywhere in the world, then the voters might reconsider his situation.) It will save the great state of Louisiana from further embarassment.

Alex   September 26th, 2008 - 12:36 am

The headline should read: “Poor Propose to Sterlize New Orleans Lawmaker.”

I don’t like people relying on others for their daily bread unless they are handicapped, disabled or needy veterans. The rest can take a flying leap! We only have an obligation to those AMERICANS who through no fault of their own cannot take care of themselves. Period.

As for illegal aliens, immigrants and others who arrived here and dropped babies… Send them back humanely to their country of origin and say good-bye and good luck!

America is not the dumping ground for the world’s problems, as we have enough problems caring for our own. We don’t want any more refugees from third world countries who don’t respect our society, obey our laws and refuse to learn our language.

Good riddence. Please have a good trip home!

Some people are so easily led around by the press

Freddy   September 26th, 2008 - 8:50 am

It is a great idea. I see poor white trash people everyday with 3 or 4 kids that they can’t afford. They spend money on beer cigs & lottery and none for their kids something to eat or close to wear.
There is a large portion of our population that don’t need pets much less children.

IP727   September 26th, 2008 - 10:09 am

Proportionately there are more minorities on welfare than whites. Go to a food stamp or soc sec office sometime.
Have them all spayed or neutered before it’s too late.

What is this strange fixation that the State of Louisiana has with peoples reproductive organs?? the Governor wants to castrate rapists(chemically and surgically!!) and this guy wants to sterilize the women,…

there are better ways of dealing with crime and poverty.

JN   September 26th, 2008 - 1:16 pm

“the VAST majority of people on welfare are WHITE WOMEN. But the video shows all blacks.”

Almost true. Half are white. Half are not. Statistics look more grim when you look at percentages of population, and numbers on assistance.

Statistics also look grim on graduation rates, but they mirror the public assistance percentages.

Teenagers having children “for a living” with multiple fathers who don’t take care of their children — is not a career, although we have made it one.

It’s a dead end job, not only for the mothers, but also for the children.

It also comes with a massive cost to the rest of us. We pay the bills, we pay for the schools they don’t go to, we pay for the support programs for their worthless children, we pay to lock up their children, we pay higher insurance costs due to their kids crime, and most of all, we pay the price when our neighborhoods decline, our property values drop and when our family members are murdered and beaten.

Enough. End the cycle of poverty for both Black and White. Welfare is not “compassionate”, it’s slavery.

Another idea would be to remove children from chronic assistance black-hole families (when bad things happen to most folks, they’re off welfare within 5 years). Give foster care a chance — these kids have no chance currently.

Vicky   September 26th, 2008 - 6:09 pm

We have a rather large Hispanic community here in Georgia and I have to say that all of the ones I have met have been hard working, family oriented people. They are a kind and friendly people group from what I have experienced. I understand the issues surrounding illegal immigration are myriad and know the job loss incurred by the situation. Being in construction we often lose jobs due to the immigrants ability to outbid us, however, I cannot forget we are talking about human beings here. And I fail to see how tubal ligation is any different than abortion as far as gov. paying the cost. Why is ok for gov. pay for abortions and that not be racially motivated. Unless, perhaps, Planned Parenthood is afraid of all the money they will lose from not aborting all the children not conceived.
