I'm amazed. Chris Mathews was actually sane for the first 45 seconds of this clip. Deporting every illegal immigrant is too costly and most of us would try to come to this country illegally if we were born in Mexico. We must develop a long hard pathway to legal citizenship with yearly fees to repay any unpaid taxes and deport all illegals with criminal records not related to their citizenship.

After sealing the borders, which will be no easy task, the next step is creating a system that will monitor foreign visitors, who must report their location and employer identification (if on a work visa). If they don't report issue a search warrant.

That's how I see it.

It is the law that you are NOT allowed to enter this country unless it is legally done through all the right channels.

It is not an easy thing to do.
You have to be sponsored in some manner.
You have to have at lest two medical examinations ( one to make sure you are not HIV positive)
You have to engage immigration lawyer.
That costs at lest $3000
All the paper work has to be sent in with all the details for a background check.
You have to go to the FBI to have your fingerprints taken
You have to have an exhausting interview at the INS and when all that is approved you can apply for a Social Security number which allows you to pay taxes and contribute to and be an active part of US society.
It takes a long time.

It is not easy and it should not be easy.
This is how LEGAL Immigration works. That's how I did it.

Crossing the border by ANY nationality IS easy and nobody should be rewarded for cheating the system.

Excellent post, but I might add that we could, I don't know, maybe enforce the existing immigration laws? That's core to the issue. Sealing the borders is not a hard task by any means. This can be done rather quickly, and with the right leaders – efficiently. Make no mistake, the border is open for a reason. I definitely agree that foreign visitors should be monitored.

My proposal has always been something along the lines of:

1)Seal the damn border
2)Pass the amnesty law, all illegals have 6 months to register as such, anyone who's background check shows misdemeanor or higher gets a free ride home, anyone illegal still in the country after 6 months gets mandatory time in the pen followed by a free trip to their home country's prison assuming we can trust said country to keep them there
3)Those allowed to stay get to pay a one time nominal fine, I say $10,000, for most that would be a steal considering how much in taxes they've skirted over the years and taxpayer subsidies they've been on the receiving end of. Fine need not be payed off all at once, but you cannot move on to step 4 until you've payed the full fee
4)Fine has been payed, now you get to wait 10 years before you can begin the naturalization process that legal immigrants go through
5)10 years later, no major crimes committed, you may now begin the naturalization process

All told, should take about 20 years as you suggest. Who says conservatives can't be fair and compassionate? Now, where the hell are the Republicans on this?
