Mother of Three Dies After Chiropractic Adjustment

WNYW: A Connecticut mother of three suddenly dies after a spinal manipulation, and now her husband wants the public to be aware of her story. Michael McCormick sometimes fights back tears when he remembers his wife Kim McCormick. Kim was only 32 years old and the mother of three young children when she passed away.

About 10 years ago my dad used to go to his chiropractor weekly for what he called “rapid cervical spine manipulation”. We noticed that sometimes following these appointments he was slightly confused, sometimes showed sluggish speech and had trouble with his fine motor skills (like buttoning his shirt). He never seemed alarmed and became agitated when we asked if he was OK. He recovered within a few hours. What we now realized is that he was probably experiencing a TIA (trans ischemic attack) and we should have taken him to the emergency room and discontinued the chiropractor. We all blame ourselves that we did not connect the dots from the chiropractor to the apparent TIA’s. He finally suffered a huge debilitating stroke (same day as his weekly chiropractic appointment) and was confined to a miserable life in a nursing home where he mercifully finally died. We did not learn about TIA’s until it was too late. My mom was so upset dealing with the massive stroke that she never pursued the connection to the chiropractor. I think this cervical manipulation is much more dangerous than the statistics show.

The husband is the spitting image of my Uncle John, but even were that not so, I would have had to tap out. It’s important to get this kind of information out there, though.

The only chiropractic I’ll ever use is NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association). It deals only with one vertebrae, the atlas, and the healing effects are almost immediate and long-lasting.

According to this story she didn’t die of the stroke, she died from having the plugged pulled on her life support.

My heart goes out to this father and three children.

I’m replying to Cranky Catholic. The husband stated his wife was brain-dead. That means she no longer had any blood flow to her brain, which would have been verified by nuc-medicine blood flow studies. Also independent neuro exams by Neuro surgeons and other tests. She truly would have been deceased and mechanical ventilation would have been futile other than for prompt organ donation. I worked in a trauma-surgical ICU as an RN for 12 years and also I’m a practicing Catholic too. Good luck and God Bless the husband and father in the story.

Death from a chiropracdtor is news because it’s so rare.
Death from regular MD’s is so common that they don’t even make stories about it in the news.
More people die from doctor’s mistakes than from guns.

RobbieK   November 24th, 2009 - 10:45 am

Dave – I agree. When 41-44% of Medical Doctors in this country are using illegal drugs and addicted to legal drugs, with a life expectancy of 57 years old, I minimize my trips to the Doctor. I’ll continue to see my chiropractor.

Doug   November 24th, 2009 - 12:32 pm

Lets see … this year the AMA claims that over 100,000 patients were killed by their MDs (iatrogenic deaths). And this news gets headlines? The American Medical Association wants to maintain its monopoly over medical care to keep its members rich. How about some news on the 100,000 patients killed by their MDs?

It’s a good thing that she died. There is no way that we would have covered her!

It’s that precondition clause, you know…

Now if you excuse me, I have to count my bonus money.

Five million…

Ten million…

Twenty million…

Insurance company CEO   November 24th, 2009 - 1:43 pm

You know, some companies will pay for chiropractic care…but not us! We figure it’s experimental and unproven so why should we?

You have to make a profit, you know…

Twenty-five million…

Thirty million…

Why would anyone risk a serous injury by letting a crackpot doctor wannabe twist their neck. These people go to technical school and have very little medical experiance.

You have heard about M.A.D.D. mothers against drunk driving. However, When the A.M.A. (THE A.M.A.!) publishes figures reporting 100,000 hospital/Doctor caused deaths a year it’s funny there is no local chapter of Mothers Against Doctors and Hospitals…….. and btw these are the reported figures and I’m sure they are accurate because they would never lie to us, would they? I’m a Doctor,Trust me.

Insurance company CEO   November 24th, 2009 - 2:53 pm

brent,
We don’t understand it, either. That’s why we won’t pay for it! Of course, we won’t pay for a bunch of other stuff, too, so if she wants to get some relief from pain, she’s free to try whatever she wants…just as long as we don’t have to pay for it, that is.

Thirty-five million…

Forty million…

I keep reading all this about the greedy insurance companies but anyone who knows very much about health insurance knows that most medium to large companies are self insured and that the big insurers just administer their plans. So it is the employer that decides what is covered in their plan not the insurance company. The average person does not know enough about their insurance plans to know their rights related to their coverage. Every state has different rules about challenging any decision made regarding coverage. But if the federal government gets control of this there will be no challenge as is the case with medicare and medicaid. This is also why SEIU is so desperate to get members to get dues to fund their retirees medical plans but if the government takes over they will have the best of both worlds, government insurance coverage for its retirees and the largest union in the world, the government medical workers. With regard to the chiro issue people show be warned if there is any chance of stroke from the manipulation.

lamchops   November 24th, 2009 - 9:03 pm

Said she went to the chiropractor because she wasn’t feeling well and having headaches. Might have been having a stroke or about to have a stroke before she got to the chiropractor.

Friend   December 1st, 2009 - 4:22 pm

Cranky Catholic – Kim was my friend and the only reason she was put on life support was because she was an organ donor and they needed to keep her organs going until they could get the donors ready for surgery…so don’t make a comment unless you know the truth!

Dr. Pfefer at Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City has created, through research, three tests to determine who may be at risk for an upper cervical adjustment.

jeff   December 7th, 2009 - 5:54 pm

Mary…..Its called an interal coccyx adjustment. It is a real adjustment if your coccyx has subluxated anterior. If you had this condition it would be almost impossible to sit on a bike. Some states this adjustment is not legal.
