Monster Truck Crushes Clunkers in Oklahoma

"The government says the old cars have to be crushed, but they didn't say how, so the dealership decided to make a spectacle of it."

WHAT A WASTE; FEDS ACT STUPIDLY   August 18th, 2009 - 4:34 am

For the govt. to insist that these so-called clunkers be destroyed is wasteful and shameful. Not very GREEN of them!!

There are plenty WORSE CARS on the roads–cars that expell huge quantities of smoggy exhaust and barely pass the smog-tests, but they still get better mileage than the assinine Cash for Clunkers rules so they don’t qualify for any cash incentive to help the cash-strapped owners to go buy a GREENER & CLEANER vehicle! How narrowminded and shortsighted! The Feds are ACTING STUPIDLY, AS USUAL!

A government sponsored Monster Truck event – Gotta love it!

America…this is sick. I saw in that pile a van that we drive…it is a 2005 Dodge Van Caravan. That is not a clunker!

My son needed a new car for his daughter since she was driving a “real” clunker a 1987 Buick Century that belonged originally to my 90 yr old uncle. It did not qualify! It was one mile under the limit as to fuel consumption. They wouldn’t take it! Ridiculous!

Some of those cars are of newer technology and should never, ever be considered clunkers.

These are the kinds of cars that individuals with little money buy to get them back and forth to work and such. A first car for one of your kids. They don’t pollute…they are still viable transportation and now they are destroyed…as a spectator sport so that our children can see the madness first hand and say that it is “cool”? What kind of an example are you setting for your children when you let them see such carnage first hand?

America…this ‘cash for clunkers’ was yet another bad judgment call from this Democratzi Congress and it’s leader!

It will be no different then the “rebate” programs that the car companies used to get people into the showrooms. It worked…they came…they bought…and they didn’t go back again until “another” rebate program was offered!

America…we need to wake up to what we are doing.

THE REVOLUTION OF THE SILENT MAJORITY – SILENT NO MORE!

1. GETTING INFORMED
2. GETTING INVOLVED

DON’T TREAD ON US…WE PAY YOUR BILLS IN WASHINGTON AND IN YOUR HOMES WHERE YOU WILL ALL BE GOING STARTING IN 2010 AND BEYOND…GUARANTEED!

Um, your 2005 caravan does NOT qualify because it actually has an average of 20mpg, which unfortunately for your grand daughter, is roughly the same average on the clunker… I agree, they should be a little more descrete on who is alotted the monies, but at the same time, I rather see it going to someone buying a car, instead of going to the banks… Another thing, the new cars bought should be made in america, no buts about it.

Dear shreddinsnow at 9:09 pm…thank you for your response to my comment. I agree with you, I would rather it go to the American taxpayer to help them buy a better car than a bank!

However, I would like to see all those viable cars that are being called clunkers being donated to people who really need transportation or have to buy a car because theirs just clunked out…and all they had was a couple of thousand dollars to do so. This program is not fair to the natural evolution of things including the life of cars and their viability!

Sure it helped alot of families who could afford to take on a car payment for a better car…but some families cannot even afford a car payment.

As to only made in America…I heard a report just after the first 4 days when the money ran out…that most cars bought were Hyundai, Honda and Toyota. But today we have to remember that just because it is an Chevrolet, Ford or Chrysler doesn’t mean it was made in America.

A great deal of the parts are assembled over seas and/or made overseas, etc. Same thing can be said of Toyota and Honda…they have factories here in America that employ Americans…Hyundai I believe does not.

So here we are with “global” cars…so it is hard to distinguish made in America or not! But your thought and your assumption that it be made in America is a great one!

I myself am very careful about buying anything made overseas. If I “want” it and it is made overseas…I don’t buy it. If I really “need” it, I sometimes have no choice than to buy something made in another country!

I buy American each and every chance I can get…but it is getting harder and harder and we must stop this process and bring those jobs back to America!

Thank you, again, for your response.

I said no buts about it! But thank you for your response Eileen

Yeah, I know it’s harder to buy anything american, but who’s fault is that? It’s the people that will go to walmart to save a dime on their milk, and end up buying everything they need for the house there because, hey, now it’s just conveniant.

Believe it or not, there are a lot of cars built here, and when I say that, I mean they are assembled within our borders, which your minivan is probably not btw (unless it’s the very few that were made in st. louis, but very likely produced in windsor, insert complaint about nafta here). Anyway, if the final production is here, it’s american made. There is absolutely no way to have all the components of a vehicle made in one region, it’s the basic law of bartering.

However, point being, there needs to be a lot more to be looked at when giving out this money, mileage just won’t cut it with the needy masses. The cars should be gas guzzlers, and if debated, then should be tested by the dealership (a lot of cars lose mpg the older they get), they should be more than 10 years old (to me, a 1995 mustang is still pretty new), and there should be a catagory for rust buckets (we’ve all seen them going down the road, great mileage but all the basic sheet metal is falling apart). I myself know a handful of people who didn’t even really need a new car, but guess what? Everybody’s jumping on the bandwagon if they can…

This govt program was designed with one thing in mind, get suvs off the road, plain and simple. And tell you the truth, I agree (even though I have 2), but let me tell you why I agree. On my last trip to Europe, the one thing that stands out in my mind the most while writing this, is coming back stateside, getting my luggage, walking to the parking deck, only to suddenly realize, just how big the cars we have here are. It’s unexplainable, and sounds a little silly, but we really do drive around in cars that are much bigger than the rest of the world. Don’t believe me? Take a trip…
