A gentleman made this comment on HotAir – believe it needs to be re-posted for emphasis.
Most of the huffing and puffing here is pure nonsense, including AP’s comments.
1. He *WAS* legally carrying a firearm and breaking no law.
2. There was nothing the Secret Service could (or should) have done about it because it was legal.
3. To actually ATTEND the townhall, or be near the President, EVERYBODY (no exceptions) goes through the metal detecting and/or x-ray machines like at the airport. The area within the facility is sanitized just like at the airport. The man never would have been allowed in with his gun and would have gotten the same treatment if he tried to do so at the airport. If he tried, he would have been arrested.
I know because I have attended events which the President attended. I have personally seen and experienced these security measures.
The Secret Service is authorized by law to exclude weapons from the immediate vicinity of the President. And that is exactly what they do.
4. The President was never in any danger by this man, and the Secret Service knew it!
5. The fact that the Secret Service reports a higher number of threats to the President means jack squat. That’s not this guy’s problem (or mine or yours, either). Our rights do not depend upon the approval of the Secret Service OR the President of the United States, but are anchored in the Constitution.
6. Since Lincoln, *EVERY* actual, direct, attempt on the life of a sitting President (with one exception), where the life of the President was actually in danger, was committed by either a Democrat, Socialist, anarchist, leftwing terrorist, or Communist – all variants of LIBERALISM, not by the “right.” The lists of actual attempts includes Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, FDR, Truman, Kennedy, Ford, and Reagan. While not a guarantee, a reasonable assumption could be made that if someone goes after Obama, it would probably be one of the “angry left” upset that he didn’t or couldn’t totally implement the leftist agenda, and not a RKBA advocate.

We now have a president who cares. Funny statement. It’s proof is that he wants the US government to force more government run charities, to raise your personal costs, to give he and his friends more power, and to give you and yours less freedom. Being a gun ouwner and carrier myself, I am very proud of Mr. Kostric for standing up to Chris Matthews in the calm, cool, and articulate manner that he did. VA is also an open carry state and while I do not often open carry, I begrude no one that does. In my opinion, “Because I can, legally” is a wholey legitimate reason for carrying a firearm to any function.
I think the most troubling statement made in this interview was, and I paraphrase, when Chris Matthews stated something to the effect that “most people equate guns with violence.” It was one of our own founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson, that said: “The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”

A person who is correctly trained and in pessession of a firearm can prevent crimes from occurring. Not just against himself, but against others. Lots of people carry guns around the president. They’re called law enforcement professionals. Matthews needs to heed the idea that just because you carry a firearm you’re trying to commit gun violence. That’s the same as saying if you have a vagina you must be trying to be a prostitute. :)
I love my country very much but there are a few changes that need to be made to our out dated constitution. At the time of its writing our country was basically lawless. Much of our nation was undiscovered let alone established with laws and police officers to uphold those laws. Such is not the case today. We have law enforcement officials. This is not the wild west and there is absolutely NO NEED for the average American to carry a loaded weapon anywhere. This shows the rest of the world what a bunch of uncivilized morons some of the people in this country continue to be. Studies have shown that “nice” Americans won’t use a gun to protect themselves the way a lawless criminal would. The idea that we’re strapping guns on ourselves to defend ourselves is ludicrous. Rifles for hunting are one thing. Hand guns and AK 47’s are something else entirely. This country needs to wake up and be a part of the civilized world.
Really does not matter which journalist or network interviews wackos like this guy! I feel sad that these misinformed people, who view the our country with blinders on, actually have air time.

What’s the typical response time for the police on a violent crime in the city and rural areas? What’s the typical action of the police once they get there? Set a perimeter and call in swat, who then try to negotiate?
Meanwhile, more innocent people are getting shot and killed. I’ll take my chances protecting my own life, as your kids mourn your prior existence.
wow pol…you make it sound like weapons are firing non-stop…LOL This is beyond bizarre. Yes, there is crime in every city. That is why we have police not a bunch of moronic vigilantes which is exactly what some of you sound like. Had weapons not been so readily available there would be a lot more young people alive from places like Virginia Tech instead of families mourning them. Instead of making weapons more readily available for criminals to easily possess how about we make it harder for them to get them and allow our police to do the jobs they are TRAINED to do and not have to worry about whether the person holding the gun is a good guy who is showing his “rights” or a bad guy they end up needing to protect themselves against. Your ‘need to protect’ theology doesn’t hold water.

I resent your comment “That is why we have police not a bunch of moronic vigilantes which is exactly what some of you sound like.” I for one am no “vigilante”. Nor am I some sort of extremist. The police are there to “Serve and Protect”, but it has been ruled in at least one federal case (the specific case I cannot site at this time) that Police are not required to ensure the protection of the INDIVIDUAL citizen but rather the security and protection of the community. And for me, this is not good enough.
You bring up Virginia Tech. I live very close to Va. Tech and know families that were affected by the shooting. I also know the owner of the gun shop that sold the shooter one of the guns. The transaction was 100% legal. All required paper work was filed and submitted and a State Police background check was performed. The shooter was not a “criminal” at the time of the purchase. Nor was there any reason, under the law to forbid the sale of the firearm. It was later determined that a misguided state law regarding privacy was the “loophole” that omitted mental health records from being brought to bear in the background check. This has since been corrected.
My point? That laws, like the men and women that write them are flawed. But demonizing the machine (in this case a gun) does not make gun crime go away. You need only look across the water to Great Britain to see the evidence. If I remember correctly, essentially banned all firearms sometime around 1998. In the five years following the ban, gun violence increased 350%. How is that possible? After all, criminals could no longer get guns, right? WRONG!!!! And that is the basic flaw in the gun-ban argument. The black market still exists in spite of the law.
As a matter of fact, the law-abiding gun owner in VA is arguably, the least likely to commit gun crimes. A 2006 report by the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute (link: http://www.wpri.org/Reports/Volume19/Vol19no4.pdf) stated that based on data provided by VA that since the inception of the states “Shall Issue” law, only 0.2% of concealed carry licenses have been revoked. The report does not state the reasons for revocation, but being familiar with our laws I can tell you that committing a “gun-crime” is the most likely reason but not the only reason for which a concealed carry permit can and will be revoked. And “gun-crime” does not just mean murder or aggravated assault. Domestic violence, restraining order, and mental health issues can all result in permits being revoked regardless of whether a gun was present or used in any of the incidents. And I for one agree that any of these circumstances proves that a person may no longer be fit for the responsibility of carrying a firearm. Couple the fact that concealed carry holders are less likely to commit a crime with the fact that gun crime, and violent crime in general, has dropped in VA since the inception of the “Shall Issue” law, your argument that guns cause violence and deaths is statistically and logically incorrect.
Many concealed carry advocates, myself included, claim that while there is no way to prove it, if students at Va. Tech had been permitted to carry concealed on campus, the outcome of that tragic day may have been somewhat different. Now I don’t expect you or anyone else on the other side of the issue to concede the rationality of the argument that an armed citizen is more capable of defending himself or others from the kind of depraved individual that perpetrated such a gruesome act as the Va. Tech shooting, I can’t help but wonder, if I am not permitted to defend myself, and am to rely on the police to do it for me, why are you and others of the same mindset outraged at the legal ownership of firearms and not at the failure of the police force to prevent such mass murders as the Va. Tech shooting.
