Maher on Mormons: Romney’s Faith Has Racist History

"A curse was placed upon him..."

You want to talk about a group with racism in its past…read about the Democratic party. The were the racist party from their inception right up to the 1960’s. Of course they want to sanitize their past, but facts are facts. It was the Republicans who fought against slavery and bigotry. Read up and learn about the slimy past of the Democrats.

Maladroit   March 13th, 2010 - 7:48 am

Oh, Maher said something derogatory?
Thanks for giving him the attention he wants here (again).

He has to say these things or his ratings will fall even further.

Right now, I believe he’s tied, all-time, with the 80s sitcom, “Square Pegs,” with Tracy Nelson. By spouting-off his usual bs, he can hold his dismal ratings there at least.
Doesn’t Larry King have more viewers?

poetopoet   March 13th, 2010 - 7:50 am

You of little mind and bounty B.M., the K.K.K. was and is a demoncrat movement, the demoncrats voted against all forms of civil rights in history, go homo to Anderson and congeal one another.

kmichaels   March 13th, 2010 - 8:02 am

Democrats have a history of lyn-ching 3400 blacks. Number of known Mormons Lyn-ching blacks? ZERO.
Dems have everybody beat in the historically racist department.

Nalora   March 13th, 2010 - 8:10 am

Loved that the black woman on the panel was the one to silence Maher with logic and reason.

giddy   March 13th, 2010 - 8:10 am

It amazes me how utterly giddy these two get when dissing religion or any of the morales or mores that built this great country. I’m in my 60’s and won’t see the complete ruination of this great society but watching it being systematically destroyed and demeaned by these giggling fools is hard to take. Wake up young people take back your country the country that use to believe hard work and living righteously was a good credo to live by.

Timothy   March 13th, 2010 - 8:12 am

Maher should shut up and give the lady a chance to talk but he’s afraid she’ll puncture his slanted argument.

kmichaels   March 13th, 2010 - 8:14 am

Jesus refused to bless and or serve anyone that was
not from “the house of Israel”. “know ye not that I am called
only to the restoration of the house of Israel”. The priesthood
was further restricted to members of the Israeli tribe of “Levi”.

Rod   March 13th, 2010 - 8:16 am

Maher is a fool who doesn’t even understand the meaning of words. The term “racist” implies one race being superior to all others. The left are some really stupid people. Last time i checked, Mormon was a church, not a race. Stupid does as stupid is, as Forrest would say.

“Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the peoples’ liberty’s teeth.”
-George Washington

“The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”
-Thomas Jefferson

Cog   March 13th, 2010 - 8:24 am

Joseph Fielding Smith died in 1918. If Maher wants that time period to be fodder for the slander mill, then he has picked his own poison. For starts, I would point out that Sen. Robert Byrd, D-VA, was said to be a Grand Kleagle of the Ku Klux Klan.
Maher’s remarks are slanderous, hateful, and intended to stir up vitriol.
Mitt Romney is perhaps the most qualified candidate in the United States to extricate us from the financial ruin brought about by Democrats. If Democrats are starting to demonize him this early, they are clearly threatened by him.
The demon in this story is Bill Maher.

cadpipe   March 13th, 2010 - 8:25 am

Maher’s religion of hating religion also has a violent and discriminatory past, anti religious Maoists killed thousands, as did anti religious Stalinists! He does not have much room to talk!

Don’t they realize that all religions have controversy in their history!

Painting Romney a Racist seems as if they fear somthing.

the cults Catholicism and Mormonism   March 13th, 2010 - 8:42 am

Oh my, how intolerant!

How do you KNOW it’s a cult?

By what it teaches!

Mormons teach that men become God! It is true, google Joseph Smith teachings!

The Roman Catholic ‘church’ teaches THE EXACT SAME THING!

Behold, their catechism, which JP II said is exactly what the ‘church’ believes!

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
SECOND EDITION

PART ONE
THE PROFESSION OF FAITH
SECTION TWO
THE PROFESSION OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH

CHAPTER TWO
I BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST, THE ONLY SON OF GOD

ARTICLE 3
“HE WAS CONCEIVED BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, AND BORN OF THE VIRGIN MARY”

Paragraph 1. The Son of God Became Man

I. WHY DID THE WORD BECOME FLESH?

#460 “For the Son of God became man so that we might become God”

Looking inside the Catechism:
Introduction from John Paul II

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, which I approved June 25th last and the publication of which I today order by virtue of my Apostolic Authority, is a statement of the Church’s faith and catholic doctrine, attested to or illumined by Sacred Scripture, the Apostolic Tradition, and the Church’s Magisterium. I declare it to be a sure norm for teaching the faith and thus a valid and legitimate instrument for ecclesial communion. …

FastFacts   March 13th, 2010 - 8:49 am

Bill Maher has no freaking clue, never has, never will. He is such a bigot against any religion, both him and John. Anyone that tears down another person’s religion is unacceptable. I think Romney addressed his religion well. Bill Maher has a problem with all religions so hopefully these attacks will strengthen the Christians base as a whole. Besides I don’t believe any quote given by Bill are read in contents and I think Amy doesn’t either. I have studied them in school and most quotes people like to spout off were not true or put in the right content. I actually have a few mormon friends, who are black, I asked them why would they are part of that church, back when I was in class, and they told me that they have studied it thoroughly and found most claims to be false and of course there are a few bad eggs but the religion itself is good.

Besides the religious aspect, SkyBlu agreed that he was throwing swear words and being ‘frustrated’ with the day. It was even possible that he had a few drinks and that is why he covered his face and tried to sleep it off while the plane was about to take off. That is why SkyBlu was removed.

Could it be that Bill and John feel that Romney is a formidable foe against Obama in 2012, most likely. That is probably why the left is picking up their attacks right now. Is he Presidential material, time will tell, there are people that haven’t even joined the race but the left has done this with both Palin, attacking her unmercifully and also every other Republican candidate.

CHECKERS   March 13th, 2010 - 8:52 am

Hollywood idiot, Maher, projecting again!

What a racist he is! Note how he initiates an effort to divide us. Is he a marionette of the DNC or does he do this of his own volition because it’s for what he perceives is “the cause” [Dictatorship – one party rule forever by “Progressives” (code word for “Communists”).

I wouldn’t watch his terrible program if you paid me $10 million, $100 mil, no amount would suffice to endure such sh*t.

kay   March 13th, 2010 - 8:52 am

Every religion has some history, or practice, someone else of non faith or another faith can find fault with. That is why there are so many different religions. What Romney ‘believes’ is what is important. How he conducts his life is what is important. What he teaches his family is what is important. What he wants, hopes, will do for the American people, and for the country….is what is important.

The J F Kennedy family was chastised by the media and many people….because they were Catholic. So? At least he wasn’t involved in a religion that practices genocide. At least he wasn’t a flaming atheist, who believes ‘he….himself’ is the only important thing or person in life.

We all know how that “Catholic” President, JFK, and his family played out.

Founder and supporter of KKK and lynching as a tactic. Authors of Jim Crow laws. Authors of “separate but equal.” Whites only cares and drinking fountains. Segregated the govt by race. Segregated the military by race. Interned hundreds of thousands of American Citizens based upon race. Opposed the civil rights laws by the highest percentage of Congressmen. Responsible for the need for civil rights laws. Basis for laws for promotions, acceptance into schools, etc. based upon race. Appointed avowed racists and KKK members to the Supreme Court. Hey Bill, you sanctamonious jerk. Which organization has this horrid history of racism? The Democrat Party. Stick a barrel into your mouth and pull the trigger.

The democratic party has a history of racism as well…..I wonder if Bill Maher is aware of that and will mention it on his next show.

BY, FOR & ABOUT

A good start in better understanding a statement. Who is it by, who is it for and who is it about.

In this case, it is by a morally-suspect lost Jew, it is for the uneducated sheep, and it is about the smearing of a political opponent.

The details are pretty much moot at this point.

Brother Johnson   March 13th, 2010 - 9:52 am

Mahar is a tool. He quotes a comment by a mormon leader from 1963 and misleads his audience as if the comment was made recently. Our terminology has changed in the last 50 years. While segregationists used vile words, those supporting integration used less harmful words back then that today would sould vile. An attempt to understand a comment made in the past with today’s norms is stupid. Imagine trying to understand the words “the gay white way” from the 1920s. The meaning today has nothing to do with the meaning then. And the mormon leaders comments then were not ment to be offensing. In fact, the comments made in the entire article were very supportive of integration. See http://www.blacklds.org/look.

Maher is a pathetic bigot of the worst kind. This is America, for now, and we have valued our religious heritage and its enormous good on society since our founding, yet this Marxist, Maher, would join with other progressives to drive religion from us, being the only thing that stands in their way of enslaving us and allowing their elitist domination over our lives. Progressives are the enemy to freedom and liberty and this is the stuff civil war and great bloodshed is made of, which seems to be the direction Maher and the progressives are driving. What’s the difference between their intolerant, fascist agenda and that of Hitler, Marx, Lennon, Stalin or Ahmadinejad? Honestly, nothing.

1) Harry Reid is a Mormon
2) Obama went to a black supremicist church
3) Obama’s church was anti- white AND anti-Jew
4) Obama’s church was pro socialism
5) Obama’s church is racist to this day
6) Obama shows signs of being a racist now still.

Willy boy Mar claims to be agnostic. That’s Greek for the Latin word, “Ignoramus.” There, I believe him. The English word is “Doofus.”
There have been more murders by Ignoramuses and Atheists than by any other religion. Almost all Ignoramuses and Atheists are extremely racist. Willy Boy is a shining example of straight-up racism. All he sees is race. But then, all a pickpocket sees is pockets.
Willy Boy, who believes he has descended from pond scum shows his racism every time he opens his pie-hole.
You can spot a racist because he finds racism everywhere, just as a man who never bathes finds a stink wherever he goes.

At some time Mr. Bill will have what is called his “Come to Jesus meeting”. Paul of Tarsus was a persecutor of early Christians, He held the coats of those who stoned the followers of Jesus, Bill hasn’t come to that, yet, perhaps when he is on his road to Damascus he too will be struck blind and asked why he is persecuting Jesus. There are no lost causes, up and until they suffer death, hopefully Mr. Bill will awaken befor he finds out too late to do anything about it, that he was wrong.

JohnnyBoy   March 13th, 2010 - 10:38 am

The Mormon Church is under a great deal of attacks right now from the left. Whether its for their support of Prop 8 or their stance on strengthening the family or religious bigotry. Update on Prop 8 – according to http://www.americanparchment.com and last time I saw anything on it. The court was done hearing arguments and were determining what they thought. Problem was that the judge was actually gay with strong opposition to Prop 8 in his personal time. That seems like a problem.

Snailmailtrucker   March 13th, 2010 - 10:56 am

Why is it that the liberal Democrats are always the ones bringing up RACE.

“WE, THE PEOPLE” don’t bring up RACE often, because we don’t see RACE as an issue, as does this tiny little person.

It appears that the liberal Democrats see RACE in everything that they say and do.

WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU?
They are trying to start trouble between the races… just another way to try and destroy America.

Sophie   March 13th, 2010 - 10:58 am

Joseph Smith resoundingly condemned slavery. In fact, at the end of the 19th century, under his direction, the Mormon church used its own resources to purchase freedom for black slaves. In the 70’s the Mormon church opened its priesthood to black males, who today, serve in high places.

I don’t recall ever hearing of the the Jews, the Catholic Church or the various protestant denominations, ever buying freedom for slaves, yet Mr. Mahar seems to have no issue with their running for public office. Mr. Mahar has clearly shown himself as nothing more than an ignorant bigot.

It’s interesting that Willie is the name of the character in “V” that Maher plays when he’s not being Freddy Krueger.

Based on Maher’s logic, Harry Reid needs to be relieved of his responsibilities immediately
because, as a Mormon, he espouses seething Racism. Then there is POTUS, with NO religion……

kmichaels   March 13th, 2010 - 11:23 am

The fallacies of calling any religion a cult are many. It is especially silly to use it in reference to
any Christian religion, since Christianity itself, using the same logic as those proclaiming that
Mormonism or Catholicism is a cult, would have been considered a cult by the Jews during the days of
Jesus. The religion back then had a small following and the Christian religion itself states
that followers of Christ would be considered a “peculiar” people, or in other words, somewhat
set aside as a “special” group of people, not quite “of the world”.

Typically, those referring to other religions as cults tend to intolerant and filled with various
forms of elitism and personal arrogance.

kmichaels   March 13th, 2010 - 11:25 am

Maher is not considered popular. His following is almost exclusively liberals and
it is not due to his comedic style but rather his anti-conservative views that draws
the liberal crowd to him.

Stewart has a more diverse following however it is still mostly liberal but not quite
as bad as Maher.

Rambo   March 13th, 2010 - 11:27 am

America is about FREEDOM of RELIGION – freedom to worship or not worship any religion.

America is about individual mutual respect for those of different religions (including mormans) and those who choose not to be religion, not about any of those religions or athiests pushing around the rest of us..

America is about the absense of Government’s legal permission to form or establish a religion. That means the State is not to be worshipped.

While religion is a form of control over people, instilling it’s core values, morals, and belief in its followers is positive for society. As Karl Marx (or was it Lenin) once said, “Without religion, anything [meant in the pejorative] is possible.” Like cutting off heads, killing millions of people to gain state ends, all kinds of perversity ….

Yours certainly rates in the top 3 of the most ignorant statements I’ve read on Breitbart, ever. I’m sure your parents must be very proud of you. To be an agnostic, as I am, simply means to be skeptical in the absence of irrefutable evidence or proof supporting the existence, form and nature of “God”. To be an agnostic is to be open-minded and rational. It is not to be closed-minded, bigoted, and fanatical to the point of murder. Agnosticism does not equate to being an ignoramus, a racist, or a murderer. Agnosticism is the only belief system that I am aware of that requires proof in support of it’s beliefs.

Show me a mass murder by agnostics, and I will respond by showing you ten million more that were either committed in the name of God, or by Atheist Communists who intended to make the State God.

kmichaels   March 13th, 2010 - 12:05 pm

Not being one to turn down a debate, I will state a little on the subject of becoming like God, using
nothing but the old and new testament. I would propose that the Judeo Christian scriptures reveal
a plan that has always been, from the beginning, to become like God.

1) We were created in God’s image.
2) We are referred to as God’s children.
3) God is referred to as “our Father in heaven, heavenly Father, Father of our spirits, etc.
4) Jesus himself was accused of making himself a God, and in response he said this:

Jesus was referring most likely to this Old Testament verse
Psalm 82:
6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are achildren of the most High.

John 10

33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?

5) Lots of other scriptures indicate we have an option to become like God …

Acts 17:
28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.

Romans 8:
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

2 Corinthians 3:
18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Galatians 4:
6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Ephesians 4:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.

1 John 3:
1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

Revelation 3:
21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

The scriptures seem pretty clear that we have an option very natural indeed, of becoming like our parent, our Heavenly Father, to become a joint heir with Christ
to receive everything that God has, to sit on the throne of God, with Jesus. That at least is what the Christian scriptures teach.

So, for those that are fearful of this concept, then you must necessarily argue with your own Christian scriptures which seems to make the father son relationship quite clear.

His mother is/was Hebrew, meaning that Willie Boy is a Hebrew, and not by choice.
I think that this is the root of Willie’s problem. He may deny God, but his parents did not. What does this say about his family relationships? Perhaps Willie could spend some quality TV time going over his early days and what happened to him.

Mormonism in a Nutshell…

What Do Mormons Believe: The Primary Differences Between Mormonism & Christianity

What Do Mormons Believe: Divine Authority

The Mormon church uses two sources as its primary authorities: the Book of Mormon and the Bible. The Doctrine and Covenants and The Pearl of Great Price are also viewed as divinely authoritative. The Christian church uses the Holy Bible alone as its authority from God. Joseph Smith is not recognized as a prophet.

What Do Mormons Believe: The Nature of God

The Mormon church sees God as the Supreme Being of the universe. However, He gradually acquired that position over a long period of time by living a perfect and righteous life. God the Father has a body (flesh and bones). The Christian church proclaims God as eternally and infinitely supreme. He is the same today as always. He is a spirit Being.

What Do Mormons Believe: The Nature of Man

The Mormon church teaches that humans exist as spirit beings before their birth. At physical birth, bodies are given to these spirits. They are also given an opportunity for free-will choice. The physical world represents a period of probation. The status of a person in the afterlife is determined by the way that person lived his/her life on Earth. If the person lived by a satisfactory standard, (including the fulfillment of Mormon temple obligations) that person has the potential to become a god in the after-life. The person can also produce “spirit children” to populate a world of his own (like God did with the earth). The Christian church holds that humans do not exist as spirits prior to being born into the world. Humans cannot attain godhood or populate other worlds with “spirit children.”

What Do Mormons Believe: The Nature of Jesus Christ

The Mormon church views Jesus and Satan as spirit brothers and sons of God. God put forth His plan of salvation for the world, and Satan proposed his own plan. Jesus accepted the Father’s plan and offered to implement it as the Savior. The Father chose Jesus, and the spirit of Jesus was given a body through the virgin Mary. He was crucified on a Roman cross, and rose from the dead three days later to establish His deity. The character and life of Jesus is attainable by anyone who performs at such a righteous level. The Christian church teaches that Jesus Christ has existed eternally as the Son of God, the second “person” of the Trinity. Jesus took on human flesh about 2000 years ago and was born into the world through the virgin Mary. He was crucified on a Roman cross for our sins, and rose from the dead three days later to establish His deity.

What Do Mormons Believe: How do we Achieve Salvation

The Mormon church holds that Jesus Christ overcame physical death and guaranteed physical resurrection to all mankind. However, spiritual death can only be avoided through personal obedience of God’s commandments. Forgiveness of sins requires faith, repentance and baptism by an approved Mormon priest. The practice of baptism for the dead is an extension of this belief, in which Mormons are baptized in proxy for those who have died without proper baptism. The Christian church teaches that we are unable to live a life righteous enough to meet God’s perfectly holy standard. Therefore, we establish a relationship with God by faith in the work of Christ on the cross, not by our own works. Baptism and good deeds are acts of obedience to God, but not the means for gaining eternal salvation.

What Do Mormons Believe: Life After Death

The Mormon church maintains that although there is temporary punishment for those that are most wicked, Jesus Christ will establish a new kingdom that will consist of three levels: the celestial kingdom, the terrestrial kingdom, and the telestial kingdom. The Christian church holds that there are only two possible fates after death, heaven or hell. These locations are final, both physically and spiritually.

Joseph Smith Jr., the founder of Mormonism, claimed that an angel had given him a set of golden plates engraved with a chronicle of ancient American peoples, which he [Smith] had a unique gift to translate. In 1830, he published the resulting narratives as the Book of Mormon and founded the Church of Christ in western New York, claiming it to be a restoration of early Christianity. They later became known as the Church of the Latter Day Saints. Tragically, the Holy Bible (which Mormons are suppose to adhere to, along with their Book of Mormon and Pearl of Great Price) Revelation 22:18 emphatically states: “I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book”; and Rev 22:19 “and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.”

So therein lies the conundrum with Mormons, in that their leader Joseph Smith Jr., clearly claimed “additional” ‘revelation’ from God with his claim of the golden plates that were supposedly given to him by an Angel (in which there were no actual witnesses to prove or substantiate his claim), and the Holy Bible in the book of Revelation saying that if any one “adds to or subtracts from” God’s Word (whether Angel or man i.e. anybody) – God’s wrath abides on them and they shall NOT inherit the kingdom of Heaven according to God’s own word(s). So you can imagine why Christians deem Mormonism as a cult dreamed up by founder Joseph Smith Jr. (who was a known “trouble maker” being charged with insurrection and later sentenced to jail and then later escaping jail and then later surrendering himself to the Governor of Illinois and then later dying in the throngs of a mob while he awaited trial) and yet Mormon’s, to this day, essentially deify him as a god. So this is what Mitt Romney will have to go up against with the vast majority of Americans, who according to polls, claim to be of the ‘christian’ faith (and much to the chagrin of Bill Maher and John Heilemann obviously). Although, clearly, not ALL Mormons are as heavily steeped in the tradition(s) that the original founders of Mormonism partook in such as racial ambiguity, polygamy, Wildcat banking, etc.

Mitt Romney himself has publicly acknowledged a personal ’saving’ relationship with Christ and I think his admission was a sincere one. Although, the convoluted and quirky traditions, practices, and beliefs within the Mormon church as a whole will certainly cloud, smear, darken, and in the end obviously “hinder” the chances Mitt Romney will have of becoming our next President, in my opinion. It’s too bad too, because Mitt himself is a shining example within the Mormon church, as indicated by his upstanding and conservative family values, his leadership abilities, his belief in Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior, his intelligence and problem solving capabilities, as well as his well known and highly touted business savvy. And simply being a Mormon shouldn’t automatically disquality an American citizen from holding the highest office in the land if that person is otherwise qualified to do so – whether black or white, red or yellow, rich or poor, Mormon or Baptist, Catholic or Presbyterian, Atheist or Agnostic, etc. Although an avowed Atheist would have a MUCH harder time becoming President (unless he or she falsely confessed to a religious belief to get elected) than a Mormon would ever have in my opinion. And that’s why Bill Maher and John Heilemann, in particular, are left to squander their lives making derogatory jokes about religion and religious people, while Mitt Romney continues to ascend the ranks and may in fact become the next President of the United States of America. >> And if all of this gets past the Breitbart moderators I will be utterly amazed and in awe. ;)

All religions have a history of racism. Sorry Bill, you don’t get to pick and choose, you sorry sack of SHEEEET.

Pat   March 13th, 2010 - 1:24 pm

Mr. Maher is ill informed. Mormons helped African Americans escape slavery for years before and during the Civil War. Better than Obama who belonged to a hate filled church for twenty years spewing Black Liberation Theology that has called for extermination of whites. Or a Democrat party that led efforts to lynch Blacks in the South after the civil war. Or a former KKK member, still sitting Senator Byrd, who was leading that organization when Blacks were subject to racist murders in his State. This is not a matter of whose the racist. Its becoming clear the left in this country has gone off the rails. After the next election policies must be brought in to force a fair and balanced aspect to all forms of education, the media, and entertainment. imagine Mr. Maher having to deal with Glenn Beck sitting at the same desk every day..

kmichaels   March 13th, 2010 - 2:53 pm

Mike, I beg to differ with you on several points, but there is not enough time to correct your many errors. You did a valiant attempt to explain as an outsider what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is but it was found severely lacking.

Your first error is the oft used deception of claiming and assuming that the LDS church is not a Christian church, so you lay out all of your comments based on a false premise to begin with. There are differences between every Christian denomination. It is simply showing your own arrogance and elitism to assume that you are a true Christian and that Mormons are somehow false Christians. As the scriptures say, by their works shall you know them, and many that condemn Mormons as non Christians seem to betray the works of arrogance, false pride and some basic anti-Christian behavior.

The real answer about what Mormons believe is that they believe in the Christ and the God that is explained in the Old Testament and the New Testament. I would venture to say, after decades of study, that the LDS teachings on God and Christ are more in accordance with the Old and New Testament than the majority of those that assume they know better and take it upon themselves to teach us what they call the truth. Invariably their beliefs don’t stand up to the scrutiny and information actually given and stated in the Old and New Testament.

On the subject of salvation, you are sorely missing the big picture, as was clearly described in the Old and especially New Testament. Mormon belief on this subject is in complete accordance with these books. In short, the New Testament states that we are “saved by grace” and “rewarded according to our works”. This is not one concept but two. One is salvation, given to all men, freely by God. The other is rewards, which, according to the scriptures, are given “according to your works.” Now many not close nor familiar with the actual scriptures, take a fairly naive approach to this concept, and assume wrongly that salvation constitutes something that it does not.

What is more ironic is that those claiming they are saved, and why they are saved, tend to be doing exactly what the scripture said not to do, which is to boast about their own salvation based on simply mouthing the words that they accept Jesus. Jesus clearly died on the cross for all of mankind, not a select few. He went on to say that if you truly love him then you will keep his commandments, that faith without works is dead, and that we will be rewarded according to our works.

However, some less well read Christians make the case that one enters heaven based upon accepting a name only, and not following it up with good works. Again, the scriptures say otherwise. So the confusion comes from reading a few cherry picked scriptures which constitute about 2% of the subject, then they go on and ignore the other 98% of the scriptures that state that you are rewarded according to your works.

Saved by grace means simply that God chose to offer his son as a sacrifice. That this was a gift and not earned. That it was the result of his grace and the good grace of his son Jesus.

How does one gain eternal life? Let’s let Jesus answer directly from the New Testament.

Matthew 19:
16 ¶ And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none agood but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

So the short answer is, if you want eternal life or to enter into life (eternal) then keep the commandments. Notice no mention of the word grace or salvation here, or even accepting Jesus’ name. The answer to a straight forward question about gaining eternal life was, keep the commandments.

Matthew continuing … (the young man asks Jesus which commandments must he keep in order to have eternal life)
18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

The young man states that he has keep these commandments since his youth and asks is there more that he should do.
20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
23 ¶ Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.
24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
25 When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?
26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
27 ¶ Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?
28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

So then, Jesus’ answer is all about good works. I find it ironic that so-called Christians condemn Mormons for believing in the same works and keeping of the same commandments that Jesus himself stated must be done in order to gain eternal life.

So no Mike, Mormons don’t have it wrong, you do.

As to your comment on Revelation and not adding to the word of God, I have to point out that you miss the key point again. This is a general concept about how it is always wrong to add to or take away from the word of God. A similar warning is given in the Old Testament. Using your logic Mike, we would have to toss out the entire New Testament since it was new words added to the previous words of God found in the Old Testament.

I should also inform you that the book of Revelations, according to biblical scholars, was created long before the many letters written by Paul. Yet you simplistically assume that because it is now placed last in the New Testament that it was chronologically last to be written. Again, you simply assume way too many childish things about the scriptures then put yourself forward as an expert on what true Christianity must be about.

2 Timothy 3
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

According to Mike however, God ceases to talk to man, and man can never be perfect and that good works to him are foolishness.
The scriptures appear to be more on the side of the LDS people than that of Mike and those that condemn others without a sure knowledge of their own.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized during our countries most racist/slave period. The mormon’s were already despised, persecuted, homes burn and chased from Ohio, Missouri, Illinois to Salt Lake Valley. I can only imagine the persecution if they had openly accepted blacks in the church. Baptist, Lutheran and Catholic church’s of the 1800’s were not openly acceptable of Blacks either.
I’ll make sure that Bill Maher is baptized posthumously just for kicks.

Jay, if the mormons were prosecuted and unaccepted by other religions during the slave period then it would seem that as a matter of values the mormons should have RESISTED racism, not try to be the most racist so they could be accepted.

The QUAKERS had a long and strong position against slavery and the subjugation of other human beings because to do so is NOT Christian. The Quakers didn’t waver one bit during the worst times of slavery. Sorry, the mormons, southern baptists, catholics, etc. have NO excuse for racism.

Jay   March 14th, 2010 - 1:52 am

I should say that blacks were always accepted. A few even traveled to Utah with the early saints. The Priesthood was not given to them until 1978. I guess you all would say that the Jews are racist, because not all Jews can perform the priesthood duties or rites. The Levite Jew hold certain rites that other Jews don’t.
If you don’t believe Joseph Smith was a Prophet, then what does it matter to others if blacks or any one else could not hold something that you don’t believe Joseph Smith had the right not give or give?

jdog   March 14th, 2010 - 2:46 am

Mormonism has a history of racism?? Really?? This is the religion that advocated for the freedom of slaves (when it was unpopular) and were persecuted for their beliefs. OK.. let’s pretend you are right. Let’s see who else has a history of racism. White people have a history of racism. Democrats have an awful history of racism (Maher… that blows your image). Black people have a history of racism (as do all races). Atheists have a history of racism. The human race has a history of racism.
If you belong to any one of these demographics… clearly your culture or existence has something to do with racism. Big deal… let’s move on.
