Louisiana Walmart Under Fire for Selling Black Barbies for Less Than White Ones

"Walmart says this was a business decision... telling ABC News that the price reduction was meant to clear shelf space for new spring inventory. They say many items are marked for clearance, adding "both are great dolls... one was marked down due to its lower sales to hopefully increase purchase from customers." That reasoning works for lots and lots of products, but maybe not in this case. Not everything can always come down to a business decision."

Supply and demand maybe?

Wow!   March 12th, 2010 - 1:28 am

Could it be more about the color of the dress?

Little girl:
Mommy!! I want one with a pink dress please!!!!

Mommy:
OK, lets get you that one then.

Oh no! Supporters of blue dress will be next to file a complaint.

iconoclastKM   March 12th, 2010 - 2:46 am

The black Barbies sell slower because there are less (13%) black people in the United States buying them.

THAT is how market forces WORK, dammit!

It is actually a good thing because, people who are black, white, green or blue can purchase them at a BETTER (less is better, no?) PRICE!

Jeez!

Driefromseattle   March 12th, 2010 - 2:50 am

What message does it send??? That Walmart needs to clear their stock! What a bunch of idiots!

THIS IS ABSURD   March 12th, 2010 - 5:01 am

Sheesh, can things get any more ridiculous in this country?
WHO comes up with this stupid crap that they call “news” anyway?

LizardBrainedLinnie   March 12th, 2010 - 5:30 am

Walmart did make a bad decision…. to overestimate the quantity of black dolls that would sell.

Now they have two options to rid themselves of the overstocked black dolls.

1.) Reduce the price of the black dolls. It is called “clearance”….very small profit margins.

2.) Dispose of the dolls in the dumpster in the back of the store.

If one wants to imply racism then we need to look at many things here. The racism could be traced back thru the supply chain.

Think about this for a second. Walmart negotiated the purchased a “lot” of white dolls and a “lot” of black dolls from a manufacturer. We have no idea if the manufacturer charged more for the white dolls than the black dolls. Could the manufacturer have produced more black dolls than the market would absorb….? Maybe it cost more to produce a black doll than a white one…? The manufacturer had to negotiate the purchase of white plastic and black plastic from a vendor. Question..? If the vendor charged more for white plastic than black plastic were they racially motivated?

Walmart shipped white dolls and black dolls from a warehouse some where. How did they decide the ratio of black to white dolls to send to each store? It is obvious you would ship more black dolls to a store in Detroit than to a store in Vermont.

See how stupid this is…? The person or persons who drew attention to this is just ignorant.

As Americans we do not have the right to “not be offended”.

Maine Coast   March 12th, 2010 - 7:04 am

The white Barbies have more titanium dioxide in them, which costs more, hence the lower cost for the other. Yeah, that’s the ticket. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. It surely can’t be economics!

Maine Coast   March 12th, 2010 - 7:06 am

Has Al Sharpton gotten out his bullhorn on this yet?

It is just good business sense. Why keep a product that is losing money.

demdicks   March 12th, 2010 - 8:00 am

“Not everything can always come down to a business decision.”

And just who in the hell selected you as the arbiter in this free market decision?

Here’s my arbitrary decision, boycott all of CNN’s advertisers!!

Wolf caught on tape: “I’ll be anxious to hear what our viewer thinks…..”

If this story does not spell out for the uninformed who really sees color in society, I don’t know what else you can say. God bless America, where people are allowd to be stupid and good people die to preserve that right. It’s an amazing country if you understand it. Don’t let the left take it from you.

Jana   March 12th, 2010 - 10:47 am

Even posters on The Huffington Post have flamed this complaint. Enough, is enough already. You can’t scream “racism” about everything in life. Barbies sell differently from one store location to the next, depending on the local population. They often switch stock, and transfer items to different stores that are selling more of one type of item. It is standard practice. Walmart is only looking at managing it’s stock, and making a profit like any other store. If some liberal group is saying that a reduction in the price of this season’s Black Barbie will plummet a Black girl’s self esteem, then it is really making Black women look like they have zero self esteem, and thus, ‘keeping them down’. These people need to grow up and get a life.

CommonSense   March 12th, 2010 - 10:52 am

OH DEAR LORD! Now market demand is trumped by Affirmative Action. Perhaps the market desire to buy a darker Barbie isn’t as big as the market desire to buy a darker President.
Get over yourselves people!

Mr Free Choice   March 12th, 2010 - 11:31 am

I am offended too. The majority of these black dolls should have been aborted at the factory like we do in society.
Then, there would be this surplus of black dolls that put Walmart in this position.
PLEASE…exercise your freedom of choice.

Mr. Free Choice   March 12th, 2010 - 11:35 am

I am offended too. Many of these black dolls should have been aborted at the factory like we do in society.
Then Walmart would not be in this position with an excess of black dolls.
PLEASE…excercise your freedom of choice.

Commieobamie   March 12th, 2010 - 11:37 am

Better start pushing that 7-up. Too much cola being sold.

Snailmailtrucker   March 12th, 2010 - 12:11 pm

Only CNN or some other Liberal organization could make selling a less expensive doll into a RACIST issue!

roger   March 12th, 2010 - 1:17 pm

Check your Constitution, I believe that would be 3/5 of the price.

Hey, what happens when they don’t sell and they toss them out?…. just saying.

R from ID   March 12th, 2010 - 2:18 pm

Give me a break!

If nothing more, this should be a good thing. The end result is that more of these black Barbies will be sold and played with by children which may lead to some little girl seeing that ballerinas can be any color.

This just goes to show how over the top white liberals will go to show they are not racist and totally PC.

Sheeeesh!

Snailmailtrucker   March 12th, 2010 - 4:55 pm

The liberals battle against WalMart continues.

Here you have WalMart giving a lower price on a doll that perhaps some of the lower income families may not always be able to afford.
Now, these little girls (hopefully they are little girls) can have a nice new doll to play with….. BUT HERE COME THE LIBERALS!

THEY WANT TO MAKE A RACIAL ISSUE OUT OF THIS TOO.

And you wonder why LIBERALISM IS A MENTAL DISORDER!

IDIOCY   March 12th, 2010 - 6:37 pm

WHAT THE…????
Obviously, there was MORE DEMAND for the WHITE DOLLIES than for the BLACK dollies. That’s how the free market works: You pay MORE for what is MORE in demand and LESS for what is less in demand.

WHAT IDIOTS!

arnie   March 12th, 2010 - 7:21 pm

Those Walmart racists are at it again. I walked through the men’s wear and found black Spiderman t-shirts on sale, priced alot less than the white Hunting t-shirts. And in the grocery aisle, black beans were marked down, but not the navy beans. And another thing, why do they only sell white lightbulbs and no black ones? They are out-right racists and there should be a national boycott on Walmart starting today.

Fang   March 12th, 2010 - 7:21 pm

There is a larger racial issue here then just Barbie Dolls…..OLIVES. That’s right…OLIVES. You ever noticed that all the green olives are always put in a nice glass jar BUT…all the BLACK olives are put in a tin can? LOOK AROUND PEOPLE!! WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE?

Belus   March 12th, 2010 - 7:54 pm

For crying out loud, this makes the news? If the white doll had been half priced would it be news worthy?

LOL LOL!   March 13th, 2010 - 5:33 am

Arnie and Fang: Thanks for some loud guffaws!
:-D

kay   March 13th, 2010 - 9:41 am

Oh Please…..

Waaaaaaa…….Would you like some CHEESE with your WHINE???

In a 80% black population like Atlanta, Georgia…..they probably sell for MORE than the white Barbies. Maybe blacks have African dolls they like more than Barbies! If those African dolls sell for more than Barbies……can we all whine and throw tantrums about the inequalities in all our lives????

I can’t believe ANYBODY EVEN CARES about this pitiful non crisis.

Nit-Pickers!

Mr. GJG   March 13th, 2010 - 4:35 pm

If the white dolls were marked down instead of the black ones then what?
More racism of course, because your charging blacks more then whites.
Its a win/win for the race baiters.

cs   March 13th, 2010 - 5:04 pm

For cryin’ out loud! If the store sells the black Barbie for a higher price, the race baiters will stomp their feet, offended that customers favoring them are being charged more!

More s t u p i d i t y from crazy people.

Owen   March 13th, 2010 - 5:32 pm

The only way to keep “racism” alive is to manufacture some to keep the voters in line with your party. If it was me, the second I got wind of this “story”, I would have run a buy one get one free offer just to stir the pot(no pun intended).
