I’m a part of Dean’s so-called multi-cultural Obama generation. If Obama has done anything for this liberal, he’s opened my eyes to what I DO NOT want from my government. We’re Americans, we do things differently (and, as it turns out, better). So, for Howard Dean, I say: I reject any degree of socialism or communitarianism.

The debate between Socialism and Capitalism is only over because Capitalism was bound, gagged, and locked up in a deep, dark dungeon around about the time the Fed was established and income taxes started being levied. Capitalism didn’t lose. Capitalism was never even allowed to show up for the debate—because if it had been, it would have won hands down. The best way for the Socialists to assure victory has always been to cheat.

Our nation fought and thousands upon thousands of people died fighting for freedom. Socialism is just one step away from communism, why after all the hard work we did to put down communism across the globe would we begin to embrace many of those same ideas?
The reality is simple. The left wing is willing to sell out the country simply for votes because they know the more people dependant on government either through handouts or through jobs will vote for the party who is pushing that agenda. It’s a pathetic and nothing short of treason.

Actually, while I have no use for Howard Dean, he is correct. Socialism is basically government controlling the means of the distribution of money. Therefore, Social Security and Medicare are Socialist, and we have had a mixed economy for decades. Communism is a Command economy, where the government determines what people want and need. It obviously has never worked because bureaucrats cannot determine what people want or need. Total Capitalism is the Demand economy where the free market determines, but in the Industrial Revolution the tycoons and robber barons ruled, and again the poor suffered. In between are the various mixtures of the two, which works, because the helpless, needy, insane, etc., need to be taken care of, and can be by a wise government. Unfortunately, a wise government is something we will never have.
So for 11 months the media, and Democrats, have blasted Conservatives, Tea Baggers, Republicans, Libertarians, and anyone else that have suggested that Obama’s policies are Socialist. For 11 months we were all called Racist, Biggots, Conspiracy Nuts, and God knows what else for even hinting that the Democrats wanted to move this country towards Socialism.

Howard Dean actually has it right… to a point. Yes, Capitalism is a part of human nature. This thing he calls ‘communitarianism’ – the desire to be part of a community is also a part of human nature. Where he has his cranio-rectal inversion moment is the idea that socialism is equivalent to a desire to help and support the community. That’s the part that, umm, makes great fertilizer.
People donate their time, money, and in the case of our soldiers, even their lives for the greater good all the time. This does not validate socialism. They do this because it is *their choice* to do so. Socialism is about stripping away choice and the wielding of power, not for the greater good, but for the benefit of an elite few.
As long as there are people who understand liberty and believe in freedom, the debate will remain far from over.

Without a wise government (which we all agree we will never have), Medicare and SS both went bankrupt and now the nation as a whole is bankrupt as well. As for the needy and destitute, individuals and small, local organizations (i.e., charities, churches) can, have, and do care for those people far better and with far less fraud than any government agency could ever hope to do. What you fail to understand is that is isn’t “free trade” and a free market that drives prices up and jobs overseas … it’s government interference and over regulation. Government has created the economic mess we’re in now, and they want you to believe it’s all the fault of “free trade”.
Government is responsible for the high cost of health care. Just use your head. Everything from free medical for illegals and underpaying doctors for Medicare and regulation inhibiting the sale of health insurance across state lines … all that must be passed onto the paying consumer.

“Free trade” is exactly what it appears to be. It’s the freedom of you and me to trade with whomever we please, devoid of protectionist regulation and tariffs. There’s no loss of sovereignty in that. Nor does buying a product from a dirt poor guy lower your standard of living. Quite the opposite, it raises your standard of living if your alternative was an equivalent product at a higher price. It’s not really rocket science, just basic common sense. Spending less on some item, leaves your more money to spend on other items. More stuff for the same amount of money = better standard of living.

Capitalism and Free Trade allow individuals to earn and spend their money (property) as they please. It’s either an individual choice to do what you please or a forced choice driven by the state and a select few in government. What the dems propose is not socialism. In socialism, everyone contributes to the greater good. What the dems are pushing is plain ol’ welfare. Citizen Anthony good post….I think people are smarter than you think…they may not understand the theoretical nuances of political forms of government but when you show them how each form will affect their lives they understand quite clearly…that’s how the argument needs to be framed…more taxes…less freedom…lower standard of living….negative outlook…all byproducts of socialism it become a monster and eventually a dictatorship…if we get back to the constraints of the constitution we can negate that….more control in the hands of few is what socialism is
