The man configured 5,000 school computers to run SETI - a shared computing effort that is attempting to analyze radio signals from space to search for aliens.

I’m SICK of these COWARDS. YES, on PRINCIPLE the employers are right. But don’t make up some malarky about it costing anything significant because there is a half-second delay to access your document.

Imagine how much money is wasted hiring people they don’t need. I promise you that is more costly than this.

Those figures don’t even begin to make sense

It has a huge cost. SETI takes the PC processor to full capacity. It draws much more power from the power supply on the computer. It creates much more heat in both the computer and power supply. This heat, like in all electronics, contributes to the premature failure of electrical components.

The computer uses bandwidth to transfer files, and has another software application that can conflict with the corporate applications, which can create a large support cost for the company. Corporate bandwidth, though abundant, is not free. Multiplied by 5000 computers and you have a problem.

That ‘1/2 second delay’ will irritate the snot out of experienced PC users. It’s not OK. He didn’t get permission first, either. I’ve fired PC guys like him for far less than just being stupid.

Misleading…
He was actually fired for a list of OTHER things…

>Gilbert police found 18 computers and other equipment stolen from the district.

>District officials said they learned Niesluchowski never installed firewalls.

>District officials also say he failed to train and supervise other tech staff.

>Purchasing decisions are made with no consultation or input from others.

>Budget perimeters are not defined or scoped.

>Decisions are made in isolation with no input or communication with stakeholders.

>downloaded pornography

Many people and organizations run BOINC in the background on servers and clients including ours. The network is twice as powerful as the World’s fastest super computer. I suppose this was just strange so it got a head line…

Arizona is full of illegal aliens, you don’t need any software to find them.

You Earthlings are sooooooo behind… We will schedule you for replacement on December 21 2012… :D

Here is your final frontier:

Imagine, hydrogen gas, in the space of a tiny grain of sand… Accelerate that tiny volume of gas’s few protons, in a relativistic way, to the mass and energy that would vaporize a Mac 18 wheeler truck… Then smash it in the space the size of two tiny little protons, to reproduce the big bang a t+ 0.000,000,000,001 seconds :D

No need to fasten your seat belts. That don’t ‘matter’ :D :D

Gravity is a tiny “weak” force… The LHC will allow the “STRONG” forces to come flying out!!!

Many thanks to all those humans out there that help with the computing power needed to make the LHC work though LRC@home!!!!

Let’s hope you don’t destroy the universe :D :D :D

The program works as a screen saver. So if your computer is not being used, the screen saver kicks in and processes SETI signal data. If that is wasting computer use, you better turn off all screen savers as well. Secondly, if in fact they would discover a signal, part credit would go to the school.

Imagine a piece of equipment actually working and doing something when you are not using it.

I bet she’s an alien, listen to the pride in her last sentence explaining a statistical loss.
