IS CHRISTMAS ABOUT A HOMELESS COUPLE

Every Christmas season we will hear the inevitable revisionist version of the Christmas story. Jesse Jackson was the first to turn Joseph and Mary into a “homeless couple” when he claimed that Christmas “is not about Santa Claus and ‘Jingle Bells’ and fruit cake and eggnog,” of which all Christians would agree, but about “a homeless couple.”[1] He repeated his “homeless couple” theme at the 1992 Democratic Convention:

“We hear a lot of talk about family values, even as we spurn the homeless on the street. Remember, Jesus was born to a homeless couple, outdoors in a stable, in the winter. He was the child of a single mother. When Mary said Joseph was not the father, she was abused. If she had aborted the baby, she would have been called immoral. If she had the baby, she would have been called unfit, without family values. But Mary had family values. It was Herod-the [Dan] Quayle of his day-who put no value on the family.”

Jackson made a similar claim about the biblical record in 1999 when he stated that Christmas “is not about parties, for they huddled alone in the cold stable. It isn’t about going into debt to buy extravagant presents; the greatest Gift was given to them although they had no money. It is about a homeless couple, finding their way in a mean time.”[2]

We can agree with Jackson that Christmas is not about Santa Clause and all the modern commercial trappings, but to turn the biblical account of the birth of Christ into a political hobby horse cannot supported by an actual study of the text of Scripture. Barbara Reynolds, a former columnist for USA Today, following Jackson’s early lead, scolded the Christian Right for opposing government welfare programs: “They should recall,” she writes, “that Jesus Christ was born homeless to a teen who was pregnant before she was married.”[3]

Hillary Clinton, in comments critical of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s homeless policies, sought to remind all of us that “Christmas celebrates ‘the birth of a homeless child.’”[4] Rev. William Sterrett told The Providence (RI) Journal the true Christmas story is about the poor and needy. “We have a very clear picture about the whole thing,” Sterrett said. “But the truth is Mary and Joseph were homeless. She gave birth to Jesus in a barn. This image captures the essence of a Christmas story because you cannot get any poorer than that.” Pat Nichols, writing for The Berkshire Eagle (Pittsfield, MA), concludes, “At the core, the story of Christmas is about a homeless couple about to have a baby. It is a story about poverty that most of us never experience, people with little more than they carry on their backs and a donkey to provide transportation.”[5] Have these people ever read the Bible?

Mary did not engage in premarital sex. Her circumstances, to say the least, were unique (Luke 1:26-28). Many young girls got married as teenagers.
Mary went to live with her cousin Elizabeth upon hearing about her pregnancy and “stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her home” (Luke 1:56). Presumably her parents owned a home and did not throw her out when they learned of her pregnancy.

Mary and Joseph were actually married at the time she learned she was pregnant even though a formal ceremony had not taken place. Joseph is called “her husband” (Matt. 1:19).

Joseph was a self employed carpenter (Matt. 13:55).

An edict from the centralized Roman government forced Joseph and Mary to spend valuable resources of money and time to return to their place of birth to register for a tax (Luke 2:1-7). Joseph’s business was shut down while he took his very pregnant wife on a wild goose chase concocted by the Roman Empire to raise additional tax money.

Typical of governments that make laws without considering the consequences, there was not enough housing for the great influx of traveling citizens and subjects who complied with the governmental decree (Luke 2:1).

Mary and Joseph had enough money to pay for lodging. The problem was inadequate housing. The fact that “there was no room in the inn” (Luke 2:7) did not make them homeless. If we follow liberal logic, any family that takes a trip is by definition homeless and finds “no vacancy” signs, is technically homeless.
Joseph and Mary owned or rented a home. It was in their home that the wise men offered their gifts: “And they came into the house and saw the Child with Mary His mother, and they fell down and worshipped Him; and opening their treasures they presented to Him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh” (Matt. 2:11).

Joseph, Mary, and Jesus became a family on the run when Herod, a government official, became a threat to them (Matt. 2:13-15).

I’m amazed how politicians and social critics are quick to quote and misquote the Bible when they believe it supports their quirky political views. When conservatives appeal to the Bible, we hear the inevitable “separation of church and state,” “you can’t impose your morality on other people,” “religion and politics don’t mix.” The Bible is clear on moral issues that are culture killers: homosexuality, homosexual marriage, and abortion. The Bible is also clear on the moral issue of poverty. Nowhere in the Bible is civil government given authority to help the poor by raising taxes on the rich to pay for wealth distribution schemes. In fact, as history shows, the “war on poverty” became the war on the poor.[6]

We would be more accurate to say, using liberal interpretive methods, the Christmas story is about how taxes hurt the poor and government decrees can turn productive families into the disenfranchised by keeping a counterproductive law.

Social and economic justice as it relates to the bible refers to the INDIVIDUAL using THEIR OWN wealth to help the poor.

Glenn’s problem (and most of ours) is that if a church uses those terms as it relates to a central authority (state OR church) FORCING people to surrender their wealth to be distributed by a small group to a group that THEY determine (without input from the owner of said wealth) are worthy of that largess.

In such a system, usually as an oligarchy, the amount of seized wealth does not get to the poor without a certain amount of “vig” being taken be the elites for their own purposes.

Of course, these elites don’t provide the wealth that they have acquired,why should they?
They are, after all, more important than all of us “little people”

There are NO verses in the Bible that support Social Justice as the above video would define the term. The Bible warns about government power and encourages individual giving NOT forced by government – so called “Social Justice”.

The Pharisees and Sadducess were Christ’s enemies who were the elites of His day. They too would preach a type of “Social Justice” but would deny the more important issues.

In the Old Testament when the people asked for a king, God warned about the injustice of government. The Bible is most compelling about individual responsibility which is why today’s progressives hate it so much and – like history – they are doing everything they can to pervert it’s truth.

I’ve been a Christian 45 years… I’m not offended by Glenn. These guys talking are insane. Charity is a condition of the heart NOT the Government Social Program. As long as the government only throws money at the poor and keeps them in their chains the poor will never be helped. Christianity, that I’m familiar with, changes a person’s HEART and makes them see others as God does. When you see a person as God does you are moved with compassion to help that person… not just be giving them money but by becoming involved in their lives and finding out what can be done to relieve their oppression. Then you sacrifice to alleviate said oppression. In the spiritual realm, when you sacrifice to relieve another oppression blessings occur, not only on those in need but also on those who are being charitable.

This is yet another reason why government run “Social Justice” is so HEINOUS! It removes from the giver of the gift, the element of compassion; and it removes from the recipient of the charity the element of gratitude. When compassion is removed from giving, it is replaced with a hardening of the heart; when gratitude is removed from the recipient of charity it is replaced with a spirit of “entitlement.” These have a diabolical synergistic effect that feed on each other; class distinctions form and animosity between the classes is exacerbated.

Sad that this is not so readily apparent.

1. The Bible says give from your own wealth as in private charity (numerous places)
2. The Bible calls for low taxes (see Solomon)
3. The Bible repeatedly rips kings in many eras for over taxation
4. The Bible says pay your taxes
5. The Bible praises a tax collector for giving back his taxes to the people he took it from
6. A disciple of Jesus was a former tax collector and was an example of how people Jesus would reach out to people of the lowest profession – which were tax collectors and prostitutes.
7. The Bible says true religion is caring for widows and the fatherless – on your OWN dime

Social Justice is simply stealing from the rich such that they cannot fund new companies and create new jobs is a crime. Private Charity is focused giving that meets the needs of people precisely. Giving money to a drunk for example is dumb. Most government charity results in dependency. Look at what social justice housing projects bought the black community over the past 40 years.

This seminary illiterate should understand that justice for the poor has conditions in God’s Word. One of many examples would be contained in 2 Thessalonians Chapter 3. A few verses in particular that excludes the lazy and contemptuos from justice are shown here:

2Th 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

2Th 3:11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.

No work, no food? Who are these “busybodies”? Those working not at all? Like government? Those who produce nothing yet take what they choose from those who do work. That is a very good example of conditions of justice and each individual is accountable to God for their own free will.

I think Glenn is right on. Social justice is a political strategy for redistributing wealth through taxes and spending. If a church is advocating for social justice, it is not preaching from the Bible, it is rather distorting the Bible. Helping the needy is called charity, it is an exercise of Christ’s love. It is essential to our salvation. Why does a church need to advocate for more government programs? It is a church’s responsibility to teach the congregation to help one another. If a church is advocating social justice then it is declaring that charity can be replaced by programs to tax and spend. Glenn Beck may sound harsh when he says to leave churches that advocate ’social justice,’ but if a church is preaching social justice, it is not just a church, but another vehicle for the government to gather votes for higher taxes and more social programs.

Jesus never once plead with Pilate to improve the conditions of the poor, it was to the ‘Young rich man’ himself. He taught that the responisiblity of caring for the poor is on you and I, not the government.

Scriptures do not say ‘Steal from one guy, and give his possessions to another guy’.
Rather, I believe it instructs to give FREELY. Which is why all studies show that Conservatives are more generous than Liberals who depend on government to help others. And I am 100% positive that the Bible doesn’t say anything about stealing money from people in order to pay for the abortions of other people. No ambiguity there. But, liberals have never understood this, or much of anything else in the Bible. They think Christ was some hippie guru with a ‘Peace’ sticker on his hemp backpack, whose message was little more than, “Be nice to people”. They also believe that ‘Turn the other cheek’ means Christians are not permitted to fight to protect themselves or their neighbors. In fact, we are mandated to love and help our neighbors – especially when roving bands of terrorists are running around murdering and torturing people. The word “Charity” in the bible, as in Faith, Hope and Charity is a mistranslation of “Love” Once, charity did indeed mean love. Progressives have changed it to mean government charity which is a lie.

I HATE it when people speak and then use generalizations to include all people. When I hear Obama and Pelosi and Durbin (The NEW Harry Reid) and Reid use the term, “the American people – this – or the American people that”, I cringe. They have no idea what the American people want or think because they are demented and don’t listen.

I have a Ph.D. in Psychology and I specialize in perceptual psychology…..ie, the study of how people look at and act upon the stimuli that makes up an individual’s “reality”. And I think I have cracked a very interesting vault of info and I thank the Democrats for it.

As you may or may not know, all visual information enters the optic nerve criss-crossed and upside-down….then the info travels through the brain and is sorted, discarded, saved or acted upon. Clearly, there are scientific facts that support that liberals actually have nerve and chemical issues that keep them from seeing the world for what it is. Oddly enough, I work at the most liberal university in California and my research rattles most other professors here. So, Obama, the professor…..well, I KNOW how he thinks….or, in reality, doesn’t think. He is a mimic and relies on his “learned” ideology to define his thought processes. He is cold-hearted and very shallow. He is a very dangerous man, because he can be easily swayed and can not think for himself. He has never had truly original thought. He has a very hard time making a real decision based on his own experiences and insight because he has none. A GREAT example of this is his voting record when he was a state senator in Illinois. He is in record as voting “present” on 99.99% of all legislation. THAT is scary.

FACT: Obama has a very serious mental illness. If empowered, he will be more dangerous than Hitler or Stalin.

FACT: Obama and his minions need to be removed from office as soon as possible.

That said, I would like to quickly respond upon the “idea” of social justice. Jesus’ teachings on social justice can be summed up in one phrase; “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. As you see, there is no mention of government determining what “social justice” is. Jesus teaches us that we as individuals need to use our free will to decide to look out for people whenever possible. Social justice comes from each of us deciding to reaching out and helping others.

Now, modern social justice is an ideology, especially when viewed through the eyes of people Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Durbin, Sean Penn, Whoopi Goldberg and the like. Where ideology becomes very dangerous is when it is designed to be defined as and having principles that intertwine with government and/or spiritual or religious. Because of this, any type of government ideology that ferments, promotes or pushes social justice, in essence, is illegal…because of the laws defining the separation of church and state. When social justic is defined by group ideology or government, and not from individuals, it becomes a pseudo-religion. A lot of people don’t go to church or believe in religious principles or practices. Bill Mahr, Sean Penn, Rachel Maddow and the rest of that gang are great example of this. What they believe in is their own self-defined ideology of social justice based on humanism and “presentism”. Presentism is defined as, re-visiting and re-defining history based on current hindsight.

God has given us all free-will. What we do with it will define what our after-life experience will be. Individually, we have to take up a personal dedication to engage in honoring the needs of social by looking out for our neighbors and those who are less fortunate. When Obama and his minions want to force us to do this based on their beliefs of what social justice is, well, they have crossed the line and become a shadowy religious movement….and that, my friends, is where the real danger lies. Obama’s lack of understanding about what real social justice is and from what soulful place it comes from (i.e, an individual’s choice) is clearly exposed in the fact that he sat in Rev. Wright’s church for 20 years and NEVER questioned what was being said. That should give us all pause to think and an use Obama’s action as a filter we can hold up to his life to help us better see what drives this man. Like the blob-like creature in the comedy, sci-fi movie, “Evolution”…..Obama is gonna blow one of these days.

Sadly, Obama is getting sicker and sicker everyday. It is a compounding sickness. If he is empowered, we are in for a world of hurt.

Beck is not crazy. He IS and very entertaining historian. If you read his books, he relishes and shares his historical research and it is quite fascinating. If you don’t believe what he lays out, then I challenge you to do the same research and come up with a viable reasoning. As opposed to using “presentism” to define history, he goes back to the “times” and analyzes the issues surrounding the times and why those particular issues had sway on decisions and the outcomes.

Know this folks, Obama is sick and inexperienced and needs to be removed. As an example, have you ever worked with someone who causes nothing but trouble and are difficult to work with? Well, that is because they probably are inexperienced and have deep feelings of inadequacy. They are floundering.

That defines the liberals who are in power and support those in power. Their goal is to perpetuate their mental illness.

The idea that Jesus preached government control and coercion for “social justice” rather than to be your own brother’s keeper is absurd. No one who hears “social justice” and thinks they’re talking about their own charity work. They immediately, and rightly, think of government using the force of laws to achieve desirable outcomes, usually doing far more damage than good.

I believe in the Golden Rule, I try to practice it as much as I can and I am disappointed in myself when I fail to do so. I do not believe in “social justice” nor do I believe such a thing is a tenant in Christianity.

Hmmm…I thought the Bible was all about Jesus Christ and God’s perfect work of reconciliation of man to Himself through His redemptive work on the cross (John 5:36-40: …You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life. And they are the ones witnessing of Me…, Luke 24:35-37, etc). I thought it was about mercy and grace (Eph 2:8-10) whose fruit was willful (voluntary) individual good works.

Social justice is socialism, which is not advocated in the Old or New Testament. What is a given is
care for the poor and the widow and orphan or leper and blind and so forth. And the scholar is wrong on the Bible when it calls social justice the heart of the Bible. The gospel of salvation is the core and from that core comes caring for others.
If one wants to undercut care, simply work in one’s own strength and sooner or later the “needy ones” will wear you out and disappoint you. The marvelous ministry of the Salvation Army is one life change and help. But having worked with the Salvation Army locally, the staff is not a bunch of chumps, as a government agent often is. Doing a job, as in government, is not the same as caring for the whole person.

You CANNOT “Legislate” Morality! The bible challenges us “personally” to help the needy. It NEVER mandates governments to DO anything. You, as usual are missing the point! This county has always helped it’s poor, and the poor of the world through CHARITY…since the Government got involved in “helping the poor” it has only gotten WORSE!

I agree with those who are saying this guy is perverting the message of the bible regarding the poor. OF COURSE we should take care of the poor. The debate is whether the individual or government is responsible. I am not an expert on the bible, but I don’t remember any passages that say the government is. The message that is implied by liberals is that nobody would take care of the poor if the government doesn’t “force” them to through taxation. My personal opinion is that people would be MORE inclined to give money to the poor if they knew the government wasn’t. There would also be more money because we would be cutting out the bureaucracy and red tape. And I feel like people that are poor would work harder to overcome their situation because it’s more difficult taking money from fellow citizens in the community rather than some faceless organization that sends them a check every month. If government was not involved, I think there would be many individuals, churches and other charitable organizations that would step in to give aid.

When I registered to vote I sat down and reviewed which party I should register with. IMHO the 3 of my favorite presidents are Lincoln, T-Roosevelt and Reagan are the reason why I joined the Republican party. 25 Years later the party love has become something very different. I find it very disturbing that we have been in bed with big business so much that we have lost our ways. While I do agree that government is there to do good for the commonwealth, and lower taxes I ask myself at what cost. Social Justice is NOT the heart of the gospel. There is justice at the heart of it, though. Man was destined for Hell because of his sin. Somebody had to pay. Jesus paid the price, so men don’t have to. He took our sin; we get His righteousness. That is justice; the debt gets paid. But it is a justice with a whole lot of mercy thrown in.

I’ve been doing a great deal of reading about the history of the “progressive” movement, mostly from their own. Progressivism is not compatible with the Constitution, personal liberty, or Christianity. It is anathema to all three. Why do you think progressives relentlessly try to undermine the Constitution, don’t recognize personal/individual rights, and oppose any public acknowledgment or manifestation of religion? Their heroes are consistently some of the darkest and most demonic butchers of human history. It is no coincidence! It’s who they are at a fundamental level! They are tyrants to the core!
Early progressives taught what they termed the “social gospel”. Initially, it was intended to help the downtrodden against the powerful and the rich. But now, progressivism has transformed the idea of social justice into precisely the opposite. They want to compel all of society to support their big government, big Wall Street, and big union elitist rule through onerous regulation and burdensome taxation. They are striving toward a global elitist dictatorship in which only the “collective” has rights — NOT the individual! Progressives are the Borg of our day, and they see each of us as nothing more than a “seven of nine” in that collective.
Americans must begin to realize that progressives are enemies of our freedom, our prosperity, and the system of government that made the USA the most prosperous and powerful in all of human history.

I’ve always been intrigued by the story in the Bible of the rich young man who came to Jesus and asked what he needed to do to have eternal life. Jesus told him to sell his property and take care of the poor. But what Jesus DIDN’T say was just as instructive. He DIDN’T call for Roman soldiers to confiscate the young man’s property. He left him with the power to choose. He recognized the young man’s right to make a choice. That’s why he was so distraught about it. He knew that he had to choose.

I am a Christian and I am NOT offended by Glenn Beck. Communism and fascism in general always comes in the disguise of peace and charity. It always ends in chains and firing squads. Just this morning, we were discussing a passage from Luke in my Bible Study class. The passage included the parable of the prodigal son. This is the story of the younger of two sons who asked his father for his inheritance so he could live his own life. The father agreed and the younger son went to live his life, his way.

Needless to say, the younger son spent his money on a lavish lifestyle until it was all gone. He lamented how there was no one that would give him anything. He had to do something to provide himself some food. He was so hungry, he took a job that had him feeding the pigs.

As he feed the pigs, he thought that even the people who worked for his father would have more to eat than he did. At that point, he returned home, where his father welcomed him back with a celebration. The older brother was mad that the father would welcome the younger son back with such a celebration. The older son would not participate in the celebratory return to the home.

Now, the moral of this parable is to point out that one person being saved for Jesus leads to celebration in Heaven and really does not have anything to do with the subject, but the fact that this was another instance where Jesus pointed out the importance of supporting ones self and not to expect someone else to provide for them.

As many have pointed out, there are far more instances in the Bible where self reliance and personally driven charity is a foundation block to being a Christian. Making a personal choice to give to the church, a local or national charity or even the guy standing on the corner looking for beer money is the choice Jesus was talking about. The Roman government did not have a welfare system in place during Christ’s ministry. All the Romans were looking for was money to build things and buy weapons to kill people.
