‘Heimo’s Arctic Refuge’: Meet the American Who’s Never Seen Video of 9-11

VBS.tv: Raised in suburban Wisconsin, Heimo set off in his teens to the Alaskan Bush to pursue the Davy Crockett lifestyle in more or less the only place it was still possible. Amid numerous setbacks and misadventures, Heimo gradually learned how to master his terrain, provide for his Eskimo wife, and rear children in one of the most inhospitable environments in North America.

He’s never seen a lot of things….so what?

keep2theright   March 1st, 2010 - 9:57 am

According to how a lot of people vote in this country, I’d say he’s not the only one who hasn’t seen the 9/11 video.

Suburban Wisconsin? – Probably a nutcase from Madison…..the same place where they gave $159,000 of taxpayer money to a city bus driver last year.

this land is their land, this land ain't your land, from California... h   March 1st, 2010 - 10:26 am

Well, I guess he won’t have to worry about eminent domain for a while.

temple62   March 1st, 2010 - 10:48 am

He can join the other 52% who fail to be informed – they are the ones who voted for Obama.

arw   March 1st, 2010 - 11:34 am

That means he’s never seen American Idol or Michelle Obama’s arms. Oh no. The horrors.

kay   March 1st, 2010 - 11:38 am

Well, the secret is out, now. Obama will find him….so the recluse can pay lost tax revenues, health care fees, fishing fees, land squatting fines, cutting timber fines, poaching fines, and rain taxes ( for waste pollution).

All the things Daniel Boone never had to deal with, and more.

sage   March 1st, 2010 - 11:43 am

LOL! “They” dont need him to leave in order to “drill for oil.” Anyway if this guy is so remote how did they find him in order to make their little video of the guy? hmmmm…more than meets the eye.

LoneSurvivor   March 1st, 2010 - 12:04 pm

Hey! Fly him to NYC and he can be the lone ‘untainted’ juror in KSM’s trial, huh??

That’s OK, the MSM has made certain, since 9/11/01 not to let America see the footage either.

You know, back in the frontier days folks hungered for information.

ron   March 1st, 2010 - 12:15 pm

Oh… Shame on me for liking my running water and gas heat or hunting at my local food mart…. shame, shame..

Lew   March 1st, 2010 - 12:19 pm

Interesting Video. I wouldn’t mind a short visit, but I am to cityfied to live there. He has some interesting videos on this site.

Jeff   March 1st, 2010 - 12:24 pm

Did any of you commenters actually watch this video? The guy seems to be an outdoors living legend type, there is a book about him and was a National Geographic documentary in the early ’90’s about him too.

sage   March 1st, 2010 - 12:31 pm

After watching the entire movie I have to say that was a very cool little video, Heimo seems like a cool guy, reminds me of Bill Murray. A very cool way of life, rugged and individualistic. Good film!

CommonSense   March 1st, 2010 - 1:03 pm

These folks are pretty neat. I’d move in a second if I thought I really had the same sand.
Here’s the original (Dick Proenneke went at the age of 51) who did it and built it all by himself and even filmed his exploits:

@Jeff   March 1st, 2010 - 2:47 pm

oh for crying out loud that dude has all kinds of crap made from petrol and all of it made in the city. nylon fishing line, fishing gear and reel, lures, nylon clothes and sleeping bags, generator, plastic shotgun shells, rubber water proof binoculars, hip boots, 60 below boots, plastic handle knifes, iron stoves, steel gun barrel, emergency plane, radios, sat phone and the satellites in space, and all the technical knowledge to make that stuff all brought to him buy civilization. And the gathers and hunter he loves to talk about died very young from infections. he is putting down modern life, but he is a dump a$$.

wilmac   March 1st, 2010 - 3:04 pm

txFirehawk   March 1st, 2010 - 3:48 pm

Simply amazing. I would love to go spend a week or two up there. I thought he would be a loner type as well, but he seemed to have a heart as big as the state he loves.

Thanks for posting this.

kmichaels   March 1st, 2010 - 5:46 pm

I don’t know, but he sounds like a dumbass to me.

Tic   March 1st, 2010 - 7:30 pm

kmichaels – He would most assuredly think the same of you also

Lloyd Mongo   March 1st, 2010 - 8:35 pm

What a bunch of DOLTISH comments by fools who obviously didn’t even WATCH what they’re supposedly commenting on. I believe Comments are for the content, not the title you IDIOTS! This guy is awesome for his independent grit. I highly rate this video for documenting such a rare and inspiring spectacle.

katy   March 1st, 2010 - 10:18 pm

That was excellent!!!
