Jimmy Carter once tried to shake my hand at a public event and I had the same reaction as you discuss. I told him I couldn't shake the hand of someone who hurt our country as much as he did without listening to advice or changing course.

I believe that the hate arises because they refuse to look in the mirror to see the sources of their own problems. This leads to blame external factors for failures to study, graduate high school, marry before producing children, staying off drugs (these harmful factors are not exclusive to one race). If one thought that someone else did this to you, it creates hateful feelings. But it also causes them to do nothing to change their behavior because "it's not their fault." I believe that Obama himself was raised in this thinking so that even at this stage of his life, everything bad that happens in his life is "someone else's fault."
