Gutfeld and Ingraham Mock NBC Reporter’s Claim That Saddam Was ‘Moderate’

NBC Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel claimed that had the US not invaded Iraq, Saddam Hussein was moving toward moderation. Fox News' Greg Gutfeld and Laura Ingraham react accordingly.

Makes you wonder if Hitler might have become more accomdating if we had just left him alone long enough to get rid of all those pesky folks who didn't agree with him. This clown should be locked up in a cell with a Charles Manson and let him explain the real meaning of moderation,

Tyler520   September 5th, 2010 - 2:37 pm

Obama claims to be a "moderate," too – I guess they are working to destroy any meaning behind that word, as well.

If someone who fills a grave with 10,000 people is considered a "moderate," or gases 800 people, I hate to see what any dedicated fanatic is willing to do.

I once, very recently as a matter of fact, held Dr. Laura in high esteem. Her "N" word rantings changed all that and now I wonder how much credibily she has among conservatives, since she has announced her intention to quit her radio show. That said, her presentation here is impressive. Maybe she would do well to take after the father of our country, George Washington, and release her slaves now once and for all. I would hate to see her strong opinions on this video compromised by a most unfortunate slip of the tongue (albeit eleven times…)

water_buffalo   September 5th, 2010 - 3:10 pm

the left only enjoys destroying the USA they hate destroying our enemies …. they specialize in building up our enemies

tftx22   September 5th, 2010 - 3:12 pm

'more moderate'? Hmm…Yes, Bush was a backward A-hole who is at fault for taking that upstanding man out of power…
The only person who was 'accommodating' is the media to the left when they try to blame Bush by rewriting history!!!

4arepublic   September 5th, 2010 - 3:12 pm

I think you have confused two Lauras. Laura Ingraham is the one in the video, not Dr. Laura Schlessinger.

scramasax   September 5th, 2010 - 3:13 pm

Wrong Laura. The Laura in this Video is Laura Ingraham, author of the "Obama Diaries" and other conservative books. You're are thinking of Dr. Laura Schlessinger. Both have radio talk shows.

tftx22   September 5th, 2010 - 3:15 pm

This is not Dr. Laura, this is Laura Ingraham, a conservative political talk show host on Fox News. -123pts? I'm disappointed in you, for making this mistake, gee, I wonder how that happened…

TheRightWing   September 5th, 2010 - 3:22 pm

And here I thought that any reports of Saddam being moderate were SELF-mocking. Sure. Like Joe Stalin was our misunderstood ally. Uh-huh.

Anyone damn fool enough to be deluded by such nonsense has an IQ of oatmeal and shouldn't be allowed to breed.

4arepublic   September 5th, 2010 - 3:23 pm

The drive by media will only be happy when we bow to everything foreign. Oh, hold on a second, Obama already does that.

RightUnite   September 5th, 2010 - 3:24 pm

I think it's time we let her put that nasty radio episode of a few weeks to rest. Did you watch this video? this woman is a leader of the conservative movement and needs our support. Let's forget about her uttering the "N" word and get back to changing what is left of this country!

skipper99   September 5th, 2010 - 3:37 pm

NBC "Chief" foreign correspondent? Ya gotta be kidding us, right? IF Engle had a functioning brain cell he would be a danger to himself. Makes one feel ashamed that idiots like Engle have a "platform", such as the incredibly shrinking audience as NBC affords, to spout their absurd crap.

ed357   September 5th, 2010 - 3:37 pm

JEEZZZZZZZZZZZ DUDE………..

HOW STUPID ARE YOU ? ? ?

CAN'T YOU KEEP YOUR BLOGGING POINTS STRAIGHT?

sachablue1   September 5th, 2010 - 3:42 pm

Richard Engle has lost any & all credibility.
He "covered" the Iraq war, ONLY because the American Military "covered" his AZZ !
Teaming up with horrific, Rachel Maddow,
as the Combat troops, made their way out of Iraq, was a disingenuous farce.
They, conveniently used the military & then proceeded to disparage them-
with their nauseous Anti-American bashing.
For Engle– to predict that Saddam would become a "moderate" is laughable—–what an idiot!

Take a look at this:
ttp://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/04/14/arrest-warrant-issued-saddams-daughter/

It has been well known, since fleeing Iraq, Saddam's daughter is obsessed
with regaining power, in her father's name and has been
funding the insurgency, that has killed Iraqis & our soldiers.
Saddam's two evil sons are gone-
that leaves his daughter & her sons to regain power—
of the country that "BELONGS" to them……lovely ?
Families ,in power don't like to have THEIR country removed
from their possesive, greedy hands….behind the scenes, they will do ANYTHING to regain control.

During the Gulf War, The Iraqi people were desperately, hoping, President George H. Bush
would not, just free Kuwait from Saddam's grip, but continue onto Baghdad and rid
them of Saddam's regime—once & for all.
They have been begging for America's help for years, to overthrow Saddam.

President George W. Bush, emphatically, stated that ANYONE harboring terrorists,
would be held responsible.
Saddam gave safe harbor to brutal terrorist, Abu Nidal, for years.,
as he continued recruit & train terrorists.
Saddam was paying up to $25,000 to families of "useful" suicide bombers,
throughout Palestine and the Mid East.
All this evilness flies, in the face of Engle's supposedly "moderate" vision of Saddam Hussein.
Engle is a mere reporter, not a "Insider", as he would like to think, he is.

All of the positive work done, by the American Military, in Iraq
has been overlooked & dismissed, by the wretched media.
They were too ungracious to shed one
bit of shining light on the Bush administration.
Frustrated soldiers, will be the first, to say how one-sided the coverage was—
after they have worked so hard and experience gratitude, from the Iraqi people, on a daily level..

Engle & Maddow, along with all the others,
purposely, failed to report on any positive results.
THAT is a travesty, in light of all, who lost their lives, trying to make a difference.

There is much left, to be told about Saddam & this war, by "TRUE INSIDERS"—
history will prove George W. Bush was right, about much, more than anyone knows…..
it will make NBC & the Mainstream Media look, like the BIGGEST fools, EVER,,.,justly so !

Tango2niner   September 5th, 2010 - 3:44 pm

Engel must be gettting dizzy from all that spinning…So I guess Gang Rape, Nerve Gas, and dismemberment are OK too …just as long as its done in moderation of course.

WTF? Where the hell do they get these people?

haha, I freaked out too, man. I tried my hardest to be professional and not give them fodder. There are more than two actually, there are countless, try to be factual as possible, now he is going to go around thinking there are only two lauras, and we'll have you to hold responsible for confusing the poor kid. ;-)

My sister in law visited a couple weeks ago from Boston. I couldn't wait to get rid of her, on the way to the airport, she disagreed with everything Dr. Laura was telling people, than had the nerve to ask what her credentials were…"Um, more than you…" My car, my radio, have a problem with it you can walk your happy @$$ to LAX. I hear a $200 taxi ride gets you there faster too.

I thought lefties were supposed to be open and understanding people, but their track record speaks otherwise. Maybe if they were more open and 'wise' they would hear both sides of the conversation before saying things like these.

We approved the attack on Kuwait. He came to us since Kuwait was slant drilling in to Iraq and was ALSO AN ALLY just like Saddam was and we told him to deal with it and we wouldn't interfere. It was a set up by the little Rumpelstiltskin character Wolfowitz that got TWO Iraq wars started.

Guckert2_0   September 5th, 2010 - 4:27 pm

My wife is a big fan and made me read her best sellers including "Stop Whining, Start Living" and the new one "The Obama Diaries". I have to say that she comes off way better on TV than on the radio. I'm with everybody else. Let's get past the racist language, using racial language offensive to Negroes on her radio show last month – hey everybody has a bad day. And listen to what she has to say about taking back our country.

Did he say moderate???!!!! Did he hear about the acid baths? Or putting people feet first in a chipper/shredder??!! Started out head first but Hussein missed hearing them scream. Or how about the rape rooms where women were strapped down, gang raped and then the video of the assault was mailed to all the relatives.

Moderate??!! Everyone and anyone who disagreed with Hussein was killed and their families along with them.

I am speechless.

PilgrimPatriot   September 5th, 2010 - 5:51 pm

Guckert,

They are not the same person: THIS Laura – the one in the above video clip – is LAURA INGRAHAM. She wrote "The Obama Diaries".

The Laura who wrote "Stop Whining, Start Living" – and the same Laura who used the N-word several times on her radio show, merely to make a point about how ridiculous political correctness is – is Dr. Laura Schlessinger.

ronfromflorida   September 5th, 2010 - 5:51 pm

Sure Saddaem was a moderate and the luntaic who stormed the discovery channel with a gun and a bomb demanding they show more programs dedicated to the elimination of man on the planet wasn't a Left Wing extremist.

CheesecakeLarry   September 5th, 2010 - 6:56 pm

It's been fun reading the posts here. I guess at mediamutters, they don't judge you on actual IQ points. . . .

That Laura Dern was a hottie in Jurrasic Park, but when she used the N word and was on O'Reilly then married George Bush, what was she thinking???
And that Greg Peck guy, when he starred in the movies in the 40's and 50's he was better than now, and when he dived off the board in the olympics and cut his head and got AIDS, well that sucked.
And that Saddam guy? He made great gyros when he worked down the street and didn't he have gas when he ate some curds or something?

Whether posting here or being on NBC, it just makes you wonder who they knew to help them get computers, show them how to turn them on, and to actually have them not piss on their feet on a daily basis.

PilgrimPatriot   September 5th, 2010 - 7:12 pm

Yeah, and don't forget about John Voigt, when he had his car stolen by that guy from 'Seinfeld' and then he lost it and started using the N word during his stand-up routine.

And when Penn…you know, the magician guy….he started telling everyone how great Hugo Chavez was and his buddy Teller lost it and tried to eat a tiger. And I'm sure he used the N word at some point.

Just another distraction from the biggest story ripening and ready to blow, the usurper is going to be forced to step down or be run out like a rat in a barn fire. BTW, Bush and Cheney did do that to us. The whole lot in DC have done nothing but toy with the nation for quite some time and it is high time they get their hats handed back and sent packing. Nothing but nothing pisses me off more than thumbing a nose at our constitution. The wisdom and blood put into it 230 years ago still surpasses anything these crooks today can come up with to outmaneuver it. Still, they try like addicts robbing a drugstore.

RobNJ   September 5th, 2010 - 9:50 pm

Maybe if instead of removing Saddam from power, we just sent Jimmy Carter to Iraq and Im sure everything would have worked out just fine.
It worked out so well when Clinton sent him to North Korea,
(except for the pesky fact that Carter gave them time to go nuclear)

Liberty_Dude   September 5th, 2010 - 10:01 pm

Have to go against the narrative here.

I see nothing wrong with what Engel said. Stating that Saddam might have done a better job containing Iraq is not an endorsement of the atrocities Saddam committed. In fact I think I would agree with him – Saddam and Iran were bitter enemies, in fact the Iran-Iraq war was perhaps the most brutal war in the Middle East, with 1 million casualties. If necessary Saddam would've had no problem taking extreme measures to defend itself from Iran. Remember Iran is flanked by us on two sides with Iraq and Afghanistan, it's reasonable to suggest they are more bellicose as a consequence of the quick example we made of Saddam..

In general though, now that we seem to be winning the media war, we most certainly SHOULD NOT degenerate into the witch hunting that we so despised when the leftists were the only media game in town. I'm a big fan of Gutfeld, but he and Ingraham piling on Engel for an innocuous comment was childish.

The_Businessman   September 6th, 2010 - 7:48 pm

The left hates Bush, but Saddam Hussein is a moderate. Brilliant. Liberals are pure, 100% subhuman scum. That's all there is to it.

ronanderson303   September 6th, 2010 - 10:17 pm

Question for you: Would you have been in support of our government backing South Africa during Apartheid, or Pinochet, who murdered thousands of his own people in Chile? Because those are the types of nations we supported while Republicans were in the Oval Office.

The question isn't whether Saddam Hussein was "moderate", the question is whether removing him from power was worth the lives of over 4,000 American soliders.

My point is that we've allowed many leaders who were much, much worse than Saddam to remain in power. Had we not gone into Iraq, things would at the very least be more stable there, and a lot of mothers wouldn't have dead sons and daughters to show for nothing.

I think what Richard Engel is saying is that the "devil you know is better than the devil you don't know." At least with Saddam, we knew what we were dealing with.

ronanderson303   September 6th, 2010 - 10:22 pm

And who does FOX News work for? The Republicans, not the people.

Unless by "people", you mean people who agree with you. And really, that's all that matters these days, right? God forbid we live in a nation where there can be intelligent discourse about our political differences. If you can tell me where that news channel resides, I'll tune in.

ronanderson303   September 6th, 2010 - 10:27 pm

Check your history. Saddam Hussein was not an Islamic radical, nor did he preside over a theocracy. The fact is that his was a secular regime that used Islam as a tool to get people in his region to "rally around the flag" in the same way that Bush used Christianity during his presidency. Iraq during Saddam's rule had a sizable Christian population and a not-so-small Jewish population.

In the same way that Tito kept all the ethnic hatred in Yugoslavia in control, Saddam did much the same thing in Iraq. As long as people didn't challenge his regime, they were mostly free to worship as they liked in private.

Iraq under Saddam was nothing close to a theocracy, and to suggest otherwise is revisionist history.

ronanderson303   September 6th, 2010 - 10:33 pm

Nice job of not demonizing your political opponents. What did a liberal ever do to you to cause that sort of vitriol? Liberals are people who have a political view that is different than yours. Nothing more, nothing less. Resorting to nasty hyperbole doesn't accomplish anything other than to make you feel like you're a better person than you are.

The_Businessman   September 6th, 2010 - 10:39 pm

I used to be a liberal and then I realized what I was. Backwards, upside down, anti-American, and everything I accused Republicans of being.

FreeJeffMacD   September 7th, 2010 - 5:54 am

Laura and Gutfeld yuk it up while promoting Gutfeld's "Red Eye" show, his book and also Laura's book.
The piece is a big commercial that simultaneously smears NBC and Engel's view that Saddam would have become more "moderate" had we not removed him from power. It's Fox News at its best.

FreeJeffMacD   September 7th, 2010 - 5:54 am

I dunno what Engel meant exactly but we do know now that Iraq did not possess nukes or other WMD – or a well-equipped fighting force, so moderation of some sort by Saddam would not have surprised me. Engel has been in the middle east long enough to qualify as an expert in my book. Laura did stop ridiculing long enough to admit late in the piece that Iran would not have been as strong now had Saddam remained in power.

FreeJeffMacD   September 7th, 2010 - 5:55 am

The people of the United States did not know that George Bush had a "get-Saddam" policy when he took office. We did not know that Tenet would be co-opted, Powell would be out-manuvered, or that Rumsfeld would force Shinseki out and send an insufficient force to insure victory.
In supporting the war, the people of the United States did not know that the admisnistration's war planners had no plan after our initial success other than to turn Iraq over to Ahmed Chalabi. The people of the United States didn't know the extent of Rumsfeld's power in the administration – it took the 2006 election disaster, finally, for George Bush to get the balls to fire him.

FreeJeffMacD   September 7th, 2010 - 5:55 am

Rumsfeld's war planning cost our people 4200 deaths, 30,000 wounded and $750 Billion. The war did not pay for itself, and the big winner so far is IRAN.
So, if Laura or Gutfeld think Engel's wrong about a "what-if", it's no big deal to me. There's plenty of blame to go around for what actually happened.

The opposition forces to Pinochet were as bad, if not worse – 2 sides of the same coin with a nearly identical rap sheet and modus operandi. The ENTIRE UN provided support of South Africa, while the US government was one of the most vocal UN parties to instigate the government of South Africa to change without having to force it via muscle…something you leftards should appreciate.

Spouting "woulda, coulda shoulda's" is for the intellectually bankrupt – it is impossible to contemplate hypotheticals. Do I think the death of American soldiers are worth liberating Iraq? In hindsight, no, but my opposition greatly differs from the typical rationale of a leftard (or do you prefer Paultard?); it is my opinion that a single American life isn't worth saving a million Iraqis – the Iraqis are nothing more than a bunch of mongrel beasts that deserved Saddam Hussein.

However, by dictating the value of one life over another, as you did, you have proven that leftist "humanism" is a bogus ruse. Please feel free to inform the Kurds that there are "degrees" of mass murder, and that the genocide of their people by Hussein simply didn't peak your meter enough to give a damn.

The BUTCHER OF BAGDAD…yeah, that just screams moderate!!! Go sell your "moderate" bullshit spin to the Kurds.
Oh, and Gutfeld ROCKS!

Right on Tyler!!!

the fact that a manic like saddam is even considered a moderate moslem should scare the u.s. poopless. a murderous amoral animal who attacked civilians with gas, regularly raped the women and children of enemies, ruined large areas of the ecology and generally killed people for no reason makes him worse than hitler doesn't it?
i do not think anyone would accuse hitler of being a moderate, would you?
it is not revisionist. it is a fact. for a moslem saddam was downright modern, which should give us an idea of what the idiots in iran are capable of doing.

Well said, but you make a lot of unsupported assumptions:

I never said I was a liberal. My comments are rooted in old-school conservative realpolitik. People like to assign the insult of "liberal" to those who don't agree with them, but to resort to stereotypes serves no purpose other than to make you feel good about yourself. It doesn't make your argument any more valid.

Second, you assumed that my comments suggested that I thought we should have allowed Saddam to stay in power and that I was mimimizing his atrocities. Nowhere in my original post did I say either. Saddam was a horrible dictator who was brutal to his people. Again, my comments were not based on my opinion of Saddam or what he did, but from a realpolitik position, which usually ignores moral questions. The realist point of view, and the one that I presented above (again, without personal judgement about whether it is right or wrong), doesn't value any one life over another. It only seeks to accomplish what is best for the State. I think that was the basis for Richard Engel's comments, and thus the point of context for my post.

More to say, but ran out of room….

ronanderson303   September 7th, 2010 - 7:48 pm

Finally, what makes the Iraqis "mongrel beasts"? The Iraqi people are one of the most highly educated & socially liberal in the entire region. As I stated before, Iraq was home to a significant population of Christians and Jews. Are they also mongrels? Or is it just the Muslims in Iraq, who, by the way, were also among the least radical in the region? It wasn't until the power vacuum that existed after Saddam that the religious radicals were able to gain a foothold.

You have a lot of strong opinions. Too bad none of them are supported by the facts.

ISLAM IS NOTHING MORE THAN MODERN DAY NAZISM!

The World tried to appease the Nazis until it took a World war to set them straight. The USA and allies bombed them to dust, cleaned out the vermin, and then aided their recovery. Now most of the Nazis are gone and Germany is a reasonably good neighbor. Of course that was WWII, an age when Americans were tough and proud of being ONE NATION UNDER GOD, not a bunch of progressive, politically correct, whiney babies!

Mohammad Amin al-Husayni was a Palestinian Arab nationalist who met with Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler and Adolf Eichmann in 1941. Al Husseini found the Nazis to be a strong ideological match with his anti-Jewish brand of Islam, and schemed with the Nazis to create a pro-Nazi pan-Arabic form of government in the Middle East.

Rules for Radicals: A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals is the last book written by community organizer Saul D. Alinsky before his death in 1972. Published in 1971, it was Alinsky's attempt to impart his theory and methods of organizing to the current generation of young activists, largely drawing upon his own experiences.

The book opens with a mention of Lucifer reading:

"Lest we forget at least an over-the-shoulder acknowledgment to the very first radical: from all our legends, mythology, and history… the first radical known to man who rebelled against the establishment and did it so effectively that he at least won his own kingdom — Lucifer."

Lucifer is POTUS now…not for long:)
