Awkward…
Leave it to the Canuckel-heads to created a death trap of a luge run and be unable to light the Olympic cauldron on the same day. Dummies.
…and if palin didnt accept the vp nomination …. cry…cry…cryBabies

ghandi its people like you that give americans and conservatives a bad name. luge is a dangerous sport, period. but i like how you use a man’s death to get in a few comments to make yourself look funny. i know people that hate america, although i love your country, because of heartless jerks like yourself.
This is socialist perfection at it’s best! Let the people that don;t have have a clue, be the one’s we depend on!
leave it to the americans to allow terrorists to fly planes into the twin towers…. dummies.
Hey “hey Ghandi”: You think your country has no “heartless jerks”?
What a bunch of hooey the olympics is.
I stand by my comment. The Canadians are blowing it. Did you even get a gander at the death trap that was that luge run? Who builds an array of unprotected metal columns just outside of a sharp turn at what is arguably the fastest bit of the run? In fact other participants in this event refuse to go down this run due to the poor, treacherous design. This is beyond a “dangerous sport” this is negligence and to be blunt; incompetence.
As for your unwarranted attack on conservatives and Americans. Not American–doofus. Count me conservative though. I guess I just don’t like politicians spending other people’s money and curtailing my freedoms. So, conversely, I guess this would make you the ugly Canadian? I think it is far more heartless to create a death trap of a luge run and defend it, than pointing out just how crap-tacular the thing was built. Obviously, if you see the tape of the Georgian’s run, it’s so clearly a senseless, preventable death. a span of mesh would have easily prevented that fatality.
As for the great one’s torch moment. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was built by the luge designers too. Also, whats the deal with those giant torches? They look as if they reproduced the “Doomsday Machine” from the 1960’s Star Trek episode of the same title. What ever happened to just lighting a big cauldron? Even if this opening did go right, that was one tacky torch lighting.
So go back to yer Labatts–ehh–and while frying up some back bacon, congratulate yourself on the splendor of Canadian design and showmanship. It is to laugh. Give my regards to Farley Mowat.
for the luge designers….ever hear of netting? u.s. is sending tons to afica, maybe you could ask for some.dont like china, but their opening spoiled it for the rest of the countries.its hard to compete w/thousands of slaves at your command.anyway super boring opening for an olimpics,so switched back to fox for oreilly, hannity, gretta, for my nightly fix.

I’m tired of and unimpressed by the “collectivist lighting” thing.
A single torchbearer has always been the tradition, a single torchbearer should light it.
Why change things to be “progressive,” especially given how tricky it can be sometimes to get the thing lit.
”This is socialist perfection at it’s best! Let the people that don;t have have a clue, be the one’s we depend on!”
OMG OMG OMG i am canadian and this is hilarous and soooooo true !
The gods are not pleased with the olympics lately. This is a bad omen, they should cancel everything.
Canada’s Olympic Committee could learn a thing or two from this cartoon of Sarah Palin on Larry King.
They should just count themselves lucky that they all made it out alive with nobody being crushed or incinerated.
How did Canadians get to be so stupid? MARXIST=DEMOCRATS=TERRORIST all the same even the stupid Canadians know that.
The Olympics ceased being about sport a long time ago. It is now and will always be about money. I stopped watching a long time ago and refuse to waste my time on this drivel.
Hey, ‘Guest’ at ‘February 13, 2010 12:59am’: HILARIOUS! You hit everything SPOT ON! I copied and pasted your comment and sent it to many people w/ this video. Your best bit: “nookyaler ingineer”. Priceless! Carry on, keep spreading the truth, brother! The REAL truth, not the ‘Global warming also causes RECORD SNOWFALL!’
A good torchbearer stands where the cauldron is. A great torchbearer stands where the cauldron is going to be.
(To the tune of O Canada)
Poor Canada.
There’s no snow in your land.
We would have loved to see things go as planned.
The whole world watches as you try,
To put on a big scene,
And then it cries “O Canada”
When you screw up epic-ly.
God help you all, for the next two weeks.
Poor Canada, we feel bad for thee.
Poor Canada, we feel bad for thee.
The commentary here is ridiculous and is bordering on the absurd. Stuff happens. This is a complicated program and the fact that there was a technical malfunction is not that big a deal. We have always had a good friend in Canada and this ridicule is uncalled for.
It is not lost on me that on September 11 all the incoming air traffic was accepted by Canada. Some 36,000 people were cared for by the capable Canadians with no notice when our airspace was closed. They are a stalwart ally and I would remind you that they are also our largest trading partner.
Their politics are of no concern to me as it is not my business. I am not Canadian and refuse to have an opinion about the politics of Canada.
Canada is a very good tourist destination in the summer and they have some of the best fresh water fishing in the world. They are friendly and welcoming to the tourists (unlike the folks of Maine- who want the tourist dollars but don’t want the tourists) and are our strongest military supporter in Afghanistan paying with their human blood so you folks should think seriously about your comments. In my humble opinion , these comments are undeserved.
sure pal said:
“leave it to the americans to allow terrorists to fly planes into the twin towers…. dummies.”
You know, I realize you are mocking an anti- Canook comment, but seriously, I actually heard this statement almost verbatim from a Canadian in Tokyo on 9/11/2001.
You guys really are bitter about your bigger brother to the south, aren’t you?
Yes, the Olympics did cease to be a sport because of dishonesty. The Olympics in China was the last straw for me- I will never watch it again because of what happened with the gymnastic competition. The Olympics has now become a show for the political leaders of the world to strut their power in front of everyones faces, instead of men and women showing their abilities and talent.
If you listened to that poet during the opening ceremonies (that talked about Canada’s invovation and the perfect socialist country). Pretty ironic that they cant get the fourth prop to work.
Irony, tried to pull off the perfect socialist country, while one of the leaders is recovering in an USA hospital from heart surgery.
It was designed by the Germans and sanctioned by the French who are in the leadership position for the IOC. There have been other deaths at the Olympics. Sports in general get more hazardous with time. We as humans push the envelope. I hope the rest of the Olympics are a success. British Columbia deserves better.
That luge run is a death trap. That poor guy didn’t even make a mistake, he was just along for the ride at that point. Also, as someone else has said, where was the protective padding to keep someone from flying off the track? Anything that would have kept him ON THE TRACK would have saved his life.
This was not the same as a skier skiing into a tree, this was a person who was little more than a bullet and totally at the mercy of physics. This guy died during practice, what happens when the Gold medal is on the line and the competitors have everything they’ve worked for at stake. They will push the limits, and if something isn’t changed, someone else will die during the competition.
My ship went to Vancouver to train with the Canadians in the early 70’s. I could not buy a drink for myself, because the Canadians paid for it before it was given to me. The treated US military like hometown boys. Their hospitality was beyond reproach.
On leave/liberty in California, I was cursed and spit on.
We can learn something from the Canadians.
The Candians IMMEDIATELY stepped up to the plate for the US following the 9-11 attacks. That’s what friends do. I am grateful.
The Canadians my run their country differently than we run the US — IT’S THEIR COUNTRY, and they certainly do not try to impose on our running our country. It what works for them doesn’t work for us, that’s their business.
Fond memories of Oil Can Harry’s…
A Good torchbearer stands where the cauldron is. A great torchbearer stands where the cauldron will be.
Go socialize something… even you own elected leaders come the USA for advanced medical treatment… what a joke. I was just amazed you all had a helicopter so the athlete could be taken to hospital this time… not like when your government run medical system caused the death of Natasha Richardson
I think the golden calf must have fallen in and jammed the gears.
I have always loved the Canadian people and enjoyed the opening of the Olympics. I am glad that it is back in Canada. Snow and ice seem to be their main sport. I felt there was a connecting spirit among all who were there. It came across on the screen. That’s what an opening should accomplish. Way to go Canada.
Even without the malfunction, that cauldron rivals Atlanta’s as the ugliest and most uninspiring cauldron in the history of the games. Looks like a middle school art project. Pretty lame. Pretty weak.
I’m surprised at the amount of anti-canadian vitriol on this forum. On second thought, though, I am really not surprised. Canada certainly has its problems – Human Righs Commissions, too much political correctness in its universities, too much tolerance for mediocre, gutless politicians (like ontario premier Dalton McGuinty) – but canada is also, in spite of itself, doing a lot of things right: it’s not waging imperial wars of aggression half a world away; its not unconditionally defending a terrorist state (Israel); its not sending 20,000 troops as part of a “rescue operation” to Haiti (my guess is that those troops are intended more as a reminder to South American nations of the consequences should they fail to embrace their subordinate role in Manifest Destiny than it is anything else); it’s not beating its chest about being a global superpower and then leaving nations like Poland and Georgia to fend for themselves in the face of a rapacious Russia; and its not exaggerating the threat of Al-Qaeda so as to justify its own exorbitant military-industrial complex. By the way: what a queer bit of hubris that a sporting event that 98 percent of the world could care less about – the super bore – is heralded as a global championship; it takes a certain amount of bizarro chauvinism to think that a silly sport you play but no one else around the globe cares about is somehow a global sport and that crowning one bunch of convicted felons in tights over another bunch of convicted felons in tights constitutes the crowning of a world champion. Americans are a funny people, to say the least – but its all explicable by virtue of the fact that their public school system is mired in waste, mediocrity and apathy. It might have been Kissinger who said that a large portion of the American populace is simply around to serve as cannon fodder in wars.
Ah yes: American “exceptionalism”. You sure are exceptional, all right – just like the kids who ride the short bus to school.
Gandhi’s Fist..I agree with you on this and most issues. That man’s death, for example, was needless and an outrage. Someone needs to be held accountable. Everyone knows this but, my friend, your hatred toward Canadians just isn’t helpful.
Hey Ghandi’s Fist,
You are a hate filled scumbag who adds nothing constructive to the conversation.
Go vomit your verbal diarrhea elsewhere. You give CONSERVATIVES a bad name!
Come on…..OK there was a little malfunction. Big deal. Once it was lighted, it was beautiful. I am an American of Italian nationality from Massachusetts and I love our Northern Cousins in Canada. They are our best friends, and we should stick by them. They have always been there for us. I wish the Olympics great success.
I feel bad for those Canadians that have worked so hard towards providing a venue for the masses. Is it not enough of a slap in the face with the malfunctioning cauldron set up, to not feel the compulsion to trash them?
As for the “Collective, everyone is a winner, and let’s ALL light the torch” deal. You Progressive Socialist S.O.B’s are the minority, so quit screwing with everything, OK?
Mark my words, if not now, in the next Olympics, they will give everyone a medal, just so no athlete will have their feelings hurt.
I totally agree that the “cauldron” is singular and the Canadians are attempting to impose their socialist tendencies on the rest of the world. I will not be watching any of these Olympics. My condolences to the Georgian’s family!
Here come the Drudge commenters en masse with their typical xenophobic, bigoted, neocon, Pat Buchanan-loving drivel.
Jeesh – enough HATE between everybody?
The Canadians are used to waiting for things like their health care.
Of course the Olympics in any country are just a spectacle put on by glory-seeking politicians and entertainment moguls in the hopes of impressing the lemmings enough for corporations to make a few bucks off it. We can see from the comments on this blog how it brings people together. Peace and love…
If a country ever did a stripped down ceremony they would be loved by the world! Say hello, let the athletes walk in, do the required flag and pledge stuff and then light the flame and say goodnight….I do not care about every native people, every art form you created and your country’s history since fish walked from the sea!!!!
Wow, color me surprised. Here come the Drudge commenters en masse with their typical xenophobic, bigoted, neocon, Sarah Palin-loving drivel.
what happened to that young georgian luger was a tragedy – and heads should definitely roll over that. However, to listen to a bunch of self-absorbed yanks use it as a cheap political point is insufferable – but, then again, engaging in cheap, self-righteous and hypocritical political theatrics is quintessentially american. hey, go back to cheering your boys and girls on as they shoot down illiterate goat-herders in the Afghan mountains and then return to the metropolitan centers where they (your blessed, “god-fearing” – but not law-abiding – marines) can deflower underage girls (its a marine thing). You guys are something else (insert eye roll here). Of course, I better not say too much or else y’all will send some laser-guided missiles into my modest flat, lol.
Canadians are good folks. If you ever meet them, you’ll know.
I agree, this whole mess has GOT to be Bush’s fault.
That bast*rd!
way to make the chinese look like rock stars canada! The Chinese pulled off a show 1000 times more complex with no errors. The difference is that in China the goober who screwed up the torch ceremony would have been shamed for life. In Canada they will make the chump a hero and write articles about how tough it was for the poor victim of the malfunction. Steve Nash and Gretsky should have set the guy who screwed it up on fire with their torches.
Oh Canada . . . 33 million people devoted to mediocrity — how quaint.
god, you right-wingers are retarded.
Maybe the Western nation’s should have just let China host the Winter Olympics.Western Nation’s cannot even afford a book of matches any more.
Hey, Hey Ghandi: Excellent posts.
Of course, there is a very good reason why politicians spend other people’s money to curtail your freedoms: They need to get reelected so they can continue to spend other people’s money to curtail your freedoms.
Graft don’t spread itself, you know.
Be cheeered! Bureaucrats know much more about the best ways to spend your money than you do.
Gosh. Let all this self-interest run amok, and you know what you got?
Prosperity.
Long love socialism, the greatest misery factory the world has ever seen.
By the way, how come no African American torch bearer? How come no Hispanic torchbearer? Why the bigoted hate?
Western Nations fail miserably when they try to imitate Socialist China, Chinese wouldn’t have mucked it up.
Listen you conservative wackos it is people like you that give this country a bad name. You will take anything even the olympics, which is a peaceful act to bring the world together, to get your stupid redneck points across. All of you capped on the liberals for crushing on Bush and the Republicans at every chance and you are doing the same thing. So how about you losers drop the stupid partisan wining and grow up a bit. Oh and Gahndis Fist your a real piece of work, people like you are the exact reason why the world hates America.
So we had one pillar not come up on time… but the cauldron was still lit and is burning still. I guess one pillar down is better than two towers in flames, eh?
GO CANADA GO
I stopped watching the Olympics after NBC turned it into one week long sob story. Always going for personal tragedy to the next.
I guess to attract women viewers. “oh look he’s playing despite the fact his 87 year old Grandmother has had foot amputated from diabetes..more after this commercial.”
Oh and when they thought it in the Olympic spirit to let the NBA All Stars play against the Irish Basketball team. Enough all ready with the the Circus of Stars approach to programming.
What a lovely display of Canadian engineering prowess…It’s somewhat embarassing, but let’s all be nice now…come on, “we are the world, we are the children…”
Hey, Taxcut,
I remember the Gretzsky quote myself.
The luge accident: I wish they had not put the video on TV. We really didn’t need to see it. I feel terrible for the athlete’s family and loved ones. I thought it was fitting the way the opening ceremonies were dedicated to him. Lindsay Vonn was a bit inarticulate when she said, “I wish the best for the family.” Wish the best? How about: I want to send my sincerest condolences to the family.
Whats with bashing Canada, they never did anything wrong. They have a beautiful country and nice people. But oh wait their socialists so I guess that automatically makes them evil Marxists who want to overthrow the capitalist society. Get a life, you conservatives are such children, its people like the morons posting these absurd comments that give America the idea that we are all arrogant idiots. How dare you take that twenty one year olds death to get across a political point, you guys are something else. The olympics are a time for peace and friendship and all you people, like Ghandis Fist, are just destroying it. You complain about liberals you guys are just as bad
Pretty sure they’re still ‘looking in to’ the under-aged gymnasts that kept Americans from gold medals, after websites clearly showed they were under age. How would you like to work your entire life for a medal and have it stolen by Politics?
congrats Canada – we may not always agree but I’ve always had respect for my Canuck brethren. Too bad that your Canadian flag – which is a great flag – got twisted up by that flag pole blower or whatever it was. And that torch contraption probably worked flawlessly in practice before some little wire probably shorted out at the worst time. Oh well – murphy’s law. I’ve could have done without all of the artsy stuff in the ceremony as well…it did all get pretty tedious…especially that interprative dance by the girly looking guy doing ‘both sides now’. I can only look at another male’s ephemeral looking face for so long. But all in all not bad.
Taxcut:
Excellent!!
The torch lighting ceremony is a pagan ritual.
This guy got rid of $100,000 of credit card debt using
the info inside this easy little e-book…
http://scottchopchop.com/
OUCH – This event wasn’t so great.
WATCH MORE ON THE OLYMPICS AT: http://www.americanparchment.com
I, and the other Olympic Mascot Buddies, are pissed off that so many of us Canadians sit here in our smug nanny state and get huffy when someone – particularly an American – points out from time to time that our emperor has no clothes. Especially when we trot out a program like the Olympic opening ceremony last night that, while it may have had some bright moments, had the pacing and delivery of a Rotary talent show in Tumbledown, Saskatchewan….”And next, some more native dancers…let’s hear it for those kids, folks”…
These yobbos, who are quite content to enjoy a lifestyle that feeds off the American colossus, then dare to infer that America deserved enduring the terrorist acts of 11SEP. That’s crap. My apologies.
I can not begin to explain how inappropiate your comment is Owenn Finn.
I realise you are trying to be cute, however you are actually a sick individual who should seek help.
I grew up near Buffalo and watched the Olympics almost exclusively on Canadian TV. Canadian coverage was always vastly better, fairer and more complete. You were able to see all the participants, not just the top competitors plus the Americans. Also, my life would not have been the same if I had not grown up watching Tiny Talent Time. Thank you Canada!
What the hell was up with that dweeb poet and his bizarre Declaration of Identity/Insecurity? Hey Canada, if you need to declare it, you don’t really have it. Wow, how pathetic was that?
@surepal: Leave it to Canadians to allow those terrorists to pass through your country. Canada is much like Americas undeveloped back yard. Kinda shitty and not really worth developing.
I think the Canucks did a great job, even with that minor technical torch lighting glitch……….
In fact, an excellent job for a bunch of socialists!
I never would have chosen Gretzky to light the flame though………he gave up his Canadian citizenship to become a U.S. citizen, and he now lives in the U.S.
Worse yet, he married an American woman! And he is raising his kids as Americans!
If I were a Canuck, I be furious with being represented by Gretzky………..
But fortunately I am not a Canuck!
Also, the opening ceremonies are far too long………..in all these games, summer and winter. And they are too expensive………time to limit the cost and length…….
It was snowing inside the stadium. I think we just found a way to stop Global warming. what do u think?
Canada is a country filled with left wing socialist weirdos. It attacks those who are the most capable and elevates untalented left wing losers with finances appropriated by an Orwellian tax system.
The luger would have lived but had to wait in the government run healthcare hospital in Vancouver…………….see people, this is what happens when you get government run healthcare………you wait…….then you die.
HA HA HA – must of been French Canadian built. LOSERS. USA envy is eating up Canucks up.
From an extremely right wing American,
I am embarrassed for my colleagues comments. Canada has always been there for us. I don’t know where this vitriol comes from.
I’m sorry for how things have started out and the loss of life. I wish you the best.
“This is beyond a “dangerous sport” this is negligence and to be blunt; incompetence.” I believe the correct term would be “criminal negligence”.
The Canucks knew they had a dangerous run and proved it by not letting it be inspected by many nations, including the US.
Has anyone noticed how lame this is? The music and all the spectacle? NBC already wrote off a $240m loss on this fiasco, and watching this is like watching a struggling movie star getting old.
Have the Obamunists blamed this on Bush – and global warming – yet?
The designer of the course is German. They conducted 2500 test runs over the last year and had a 3% crash rate. Typical for all new courses. Ghandi is a fine example of why no one likes americans.
Gosh, why is it that socialists always use ad hominems to make their point? Stooping to the level of saying that conservatives are stupid only proves how shallow your arguments are.
A better argument to defend Canada would be this: Canada is a very complicated, regional country and there are a lot of us there who are trying to change the culture there so that our reputation as a socialist paradise will change. Right now, our Conservative government is actually doing some things right – considering our opposition Liberal Party wants to ensure that Canada will be a debt-plagued, abortion overseas-funding, job-killing nation.
Before you tarnish a whole country, remember that no nation is ever that simple.
News headline: “One out of four Canadians suffers an erection difficulty”.
Tom said: “Here come the Drudge commenters en masse with their typical xenophobic, bigoted, neocon, Pat Buchanan-loving drivel.”
Tom reminds us that the Party of Tolerance rarely exhibits the trait they demand from others.
Progressive (translation – liberal nutcase) C eh N eh D eh – nuff said
yuck. honestly people, of all the people to hate on you all hate on canadians…What is the purpose? I have been there a few times, perfectly nice people. ???? I am a conservative, but I don’t assume that EVERYONE must think like me to be a good person. I feel terrible for the luge guy, but he decided to do the sport. He accepted the risks. You would think conservatives would be all up on personal responsibility.
As for our ‘imperial’ wars…um, I guess whatever dim wit said that one thinks it is okay for thug dictators to repress and savage his people for decades on end. That makes sense because nobody in a socialist country will take the side of the dissenters in Iran. NOT even our own presidential boy wonder. Collectively our leaders have failed. Period. We need new leadership who understand personal initiative, personal responsibility and freedom and DEMOCRACY. As for Israel being a terrorist state, How would canada like to be surrounded on all sides by people committed to seeing them wiped off the face of the map since their inception. What really gets me about Jew haters is the amount of terrorism and bloodshed they ignore from hamas and hizballah. When has a jew come on to public transport and murdered people through suicide bombing. They have the right to self defense. So does america. So does canada.
I think the Canadians did an admirable job with the opening ceremony.
I know and work with a lot of Canadians, they are fine people.
You who are bitching about the politicizing of the games, grow up. You get zero points for pointing out the obvious. Money is how the world works. If there were no money, nothing would happen. Clever, and not so clever, people figure out how the system works and then use the system. If you don’t understand that you are highly naive, it’s not going away, ever.
As to the death on the luge, I am truly sorry for the driver. My sympathy goes out to his family and his Country,.
Im honestly done reading this website. Filled with right-wing heartless loons.
Damn Canucks! Was about to diss them till they light the the damn thing and see all that fire & flame…Got to love that Carbon footprint–Go Canada!!!
Question on Opening Ceremonies: Who were all those Unemployed, Fiddling, Tap-Dancing Goth Bikers? Are they what best represents Canada today?
Is it fair only four people can light the Olympic torch? I think everyone who wants to light it should be able to light it. Thanks for the free healthcare!
This screwup never would’ve occurred except that the PC Canucks felt they had to be “fair” to four people, just like the libtards who feel there should be no winners in Little League games.
Now the Olympic committee finds that the course didn’t cause the death of the poor luger? What nitwit would put a series of unprotected posts next to the fastest curve on the course?
There’s an old Scottish saying: The more complicated the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain.
Typical Drudge readers, enjoy your tea party and national bankruptcy caused not by Obama and his “socialist” policies, but by Dubya and his debt financed ideological war. Ignorant policies and ignorant people (like many on this post) are why the world now feels the 9/11 terrorists were somewhat just in taking innocent lives in the US. The invasion of a sovereign Iraq and the ignorant rhetoric that have come out of this country in the past 8.5 years took away all the sympathy and empathy the world felt in the weeks following 9/11. Bottom line is Canada is well liked and respected globally, has 3 of the 10 most livable cities in the world (The US has NONE), and a financial system isn’t in disrepair. So before you start making ignorant comments, take a look in the mirror. The American century has come and gone. Show some dignity and become a participant in the global community or you will end up as irrelevant as your friends in France.
Obviously a women was in charge of designing and implementing this….
hey ghandi ,
What makes that clown, “ghandisfist”, a conservative. You are a stupid ass just like him.
I am an American. I lived in Canada for several years. I am really sorry for the ignorant comments made above. There are a lot of Americans who can’t see any further than their own butts (since that is where their heads are). Canada is a great nation and a great beacon of light for the world.
Good one TAXCUT! LOL. “A good torchbearer stands where the cauldron is. A great torchbearer stands where the cauldron is going to be.” If only Bob Costas was so clever. Canada is a great country with smart people – but there is an undeniable hatred and resentment of America that is not at all appealing.
LOL!… Canadian technology at its finest. The Germans would have had such a contraption debugged with a micrometer or not gone with it altogether if it showed itself to be unreliable.
I really liked the part with the fiddlers. Was very exciting and entertaining!

The malfunction is Bush’s fault. It was also caused by global warming, which everyone knows is Bush’s fault. Well, perhaps not all Bush’s fault. Let’s not forget Reagan and Nixon.
They called Jimbo Carter, the nookyaler ingineer, to fix it, but his helicopter got stuck in the global warming caused sandstorm outside Vancouver.
D’bama was too busy rehearsing with his teleprompter to do anything, but he will form a panel and discuss it early next week.
