Graphic Video: Sisters Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver

KTLA: Police have released graphic surveillance video in hopes of finding the hit-and-run driver who struck a teenage girl and a 3-year-old a few days after Christmas. Police said the driver hit a 14-year-old girl and her 3-year-old niece as they crossed Main Street near 43rd Street at about 6 p.m. on Dec. 28.

I’m pretty sure that driver was George Bush

Fine, I’ll mod myself this time:

Show me a green card and I’ll feel sorry for the 3 year old who was dragged out into traffic. A 14 year old should be able to figure it out, and she almost killed her sister. If you are going to jaywalk, maybe you should take a look around first.

But let’s face it. Black people and Mexicans can’t cross the street. They walk right out in traffic and expect that you will be able to stop. Had they crossed a few seconds earlier, they would have been mowed down by the minivan traveling at roughly the same speed.

I’ll also lay money that the driver was an illegal without insurance. Once again, we pick up the tab for the bills.

Spandex bike helmet folks are worse. They dart out between parked cars and run lights like they have deflector shields, and I really don’t feel bad for them when they end up as hood ornaments.

Oh, we’ll have the left screaming for billions to spend on PSA ads during prime time for a “look both ways campaign”. I’m sure all their buddies will make out well, just like what happened with the “stimulus” spending.

WHITE CAR,thank goodness it wasn’t a Black car.
LOOK BOTH WAYS ,BEFORE ACROSSING A STREET!

OK NUMBER 1 I FEEL SORRY FOR PIG AND GRASSY KNOLL, ITS NOT LIKE THE TWO KIDS RAN OUT AT THE LAST SECOND, THEY WERE ALREADY IN MOTION CROSSING THE STREET WHEN THEY WERE HIT. NUMBER 2 YES THEY WERE RELATED HOWEVER IT WAS NIECE AND AUNT. NUMBER 3 HOW SICK DO YOU PEOPLE HAVE TO TO BLAME THE PEDESTRIANS AND NOT THE DRIVER. AND IN EVERY STATE DRIVING MANUAL ACROSS THE COUNTRY IT STATES, “PEDESTRIANS ALWAYS HAVE THE RIGHT AWAY”, AND IF YOU LIVE IN THAT AREA CROSSWALKS IN RURAL AREAS ARE NON-EXSISTANT SO YOU CROSS WHERE YOU CAN. IT’S SAD WHEN PEOPLE JUST DON’T GIVE A CRAP ANYMORE AND LAUGH WHEN 2 CHILDREN ARE INJURED TO NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN, THEY WERE ALREADY CROSSING THE STREET AND FOR A DRIVER TO PLOW RIGHT INTO THEM AND NOT STOP IS WHAT YOU SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT, NOT THE POOR VICTIMS.

Trisha,

First off the caps are obnoxious.

Secondly, no — pedestrians do not have the right of way mid block. They also do not have the right of way when crossing against a light at an intersection. There’s a word for that, they call it jaywalking.

Don’t believe me? Try it yourself and see if you get hit. Walk right out into a busy street and “expect” a driver to swerve to miss you, or slam on the breaks.

Drivers manuals do not say you have to avoid jaywalkers. And legally, “It’s OK to hit them, you just have to stop after you do it”. It is perfectly fine to mow down a pedestrian if you were not operating your vehicle in an unsafe manner.

It appears the driver was doing roughly the same speed as the minivan that just went through seconds before, and she was following the minivan at a safe distance. Speed was 35 according to some reports. I’d guess the speed limit was 30, but within 5mph is perfectly acceptable. Car speedometers just aren’t that accurate especially on 10 year old cars.

On a rural road, you are expected to “look both ways”. I believe there are some old Disney cartoons about that. Perhaps you can still find them on Bitorrent or youtube if you have issues.

Thirdly, I do blame the Aunt (although the headline reads “Sisters”) for leading a 3 year old out into traffic. How can you not. She almost killed a child and it was her fault. If the driver stopped, there wouldn’t be any charges — at all, and this wouldn’t be a story. Why? See my second point.

Great example teaching the kid how to cross the street. Hopefully the girl makes a full recovery and remembers it.

“TRISHA,” you wrote, “…IN EVERY STATE DRIVING MANUAL ACROSS THE COUNTRY IT STATES, “PEDESTRIANS ALWAYS HAVE THE RIGHT AWAY” [sic]

You are wrong. Pedestrians have the right of way in crosswalks, whether marked or unmarked and as long as they’re crossing with the light. By definition, crosswalks are located at corners, not in the middle of a block.

But thanks for playing.
