Graphic Video: Olympic Luger Thrown From Sled, Dies

Watch CBS News Videos Online

CBS News: A men's Olympic luger from the country of Georgia died Friday after a high-speed crash during training. IOC president Jacques Rogge said the death hours before the opening ceremony "clearly casts a shadow over these games." Nodar Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled, went over the track wall and struck an unpadded steel pole near the finish line at Whistler Sliding Center. Doctors were unable to revive the 21-year-old luger, who died at a hospital, the International Olympic Committee said.

While I truly feel sorry that this accident happened… these people choose to compete in these events and they know the dangers.

My thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family!

RIP Sir   February 12th, 2010 - 4:47 pm

Take the video down Breitbart… Have some respect …..

Kek   February 12th, 2010 - 4:48 pm

Holy shit!!! How in the heck could the morons in charge of the Olympics thought the open beams was safe?!? Good grief.

It was Bush’s fault.

Not too smart putting metal pillars next to the track like that.

Just shows how fragile life is. God Bless him and his family.

THE FEAR OF GOD IS THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM!   February 12th, 2010 - 5:22 pm

So, Audrey, you think people can somehow benefit from your thoughts?

Or, exactly, what do you mean?

john   February 12th, 2010 - 5:30 pm

Very Very sad. God Bless.

Hope they do something with those support posts that are there — yikes.

Chuck Hanks   February 12th, 2010 - 6:29 pm

How very, very stupid of those in charge not to have those pillars so close to the track not thickly cushioned. He might have lived if one of these fools at this event thought for just a little that these STEEL pillars five feet away might be trouble.

AVIDEOGUY   February 12th, 2010 - 6:41 pm

THE VIDEO SHOULD DEFINATELY BE SEEN – SO PEOPLE COULD BE MORE SAFETY MINDED – ESPECIALLY BY PEOPLE THAT DESIGN SUCH THINGS – THEY SHOULD HAVE HAD A WALL THERE AND HE COULD OF JUST GLANCED OFF AND NOT HAVE BEEN KILLED

twanaj   February 12th, 2010 - 6:48 pm

god bless his family . fix that track now !

Everyone should thank the engineers who put that death trap together.

StopWaste   February 12th, 2010 - 7:28 pm

Condolences to the family. Olympic or professional speed-oriented sports are always dangerous because they push the boundaries to be faster. The guy came in at the top of the curve then lost control, strange the track funneled in so narrow. If the track was wider at that point, I don’t think he’d have bounced at the inner curve. I think they better fix it ’cause wrapping cushions around the steel pillars won’t help at that speed. Maybe widen that inner curve and put high plexi-glass walls on both sides. A tragedy.

deadjournalism   February 12th, 2010 - 7:37 pm

Who’s the brainiac responsible for this? You don’t have to watch the video. The sound alone is extremely effective. He hit that steel post with the back of his head at 90MPH. You can hear that echoed twang caused by his helmet. His brain was dead at impact. His heart was probably still working, but his brain was destroyed on impact. It’s almost like falling from a building head first. The video is actually CBS footage they are playing online. Don’t think CBS isn’t making money with this footage. Every 1,000 clicks they make money.

Michael   February 12th, 2010 - 7:42 pm

Criminal negligence on the part of the designers of that event. MY LORD IN HEAVEN protect the rest of the poor souls that dare to do this sporting event.

Randy   February 12th, 2010 - 7:46 pm

they need Safer barriers! it wouldn’t have mattered if the post were padded, it’s the sudden stop that gets you.

RIP SIR: Breitbart is a news organization! They had nothing to do with the death of this athlete! It is their job to show & expose the flaw in the design of this track by showing this video! They WARNED us of GRAPHIC CONTENT! You are playing politics with this horrid accident. If you don;t like it, don’t view it and don’t click the play button. You are not the editor of this website, you KNUCKLEHEAD!

Steve in Phoenix   February 12th, 2010 - 8:10 pm

That track is a killer. Coming out of that turn there is bottleneck clear as day and when he hit the bottle neck the sled has no where to go but where it did. That is so tragic. How can you design such a bottleneck into the track.

MysteriousNibbLr   February 12th, 2010 - 8:10 pm

While I do agree placing steel pillars right next to a luge track is an engineering disaster, and the world needs to know so this is avoided in the future, I would like to see some positive news about the Olympics on BBTV. I’m not going to hold my breath though, because I know as well as BB does gore and sex draw the most hits to his site, which in turn draws more advertising money to BB’s bank account.

aw shuddup   February 12th, 2010 - 8:22 pm

“RIP Sir” and “Rexter”, this video is not Breitbart’s video, idiots. It is from CBS News. Do you see where it says “CBS NEWS” right on the video, idiots? Does that make it okay then? Of course it does.

Vherno   February 12th, 2010 - 8:28 pm

That is horrible. What a tragic loss to the Olympic family, and the World. Seeing this helps show the arrogance of the safety officials. I had no idea of the ridiculous amounts of metal beams along that part of the track, where speeds will be an excess of 90?

JeffroBodine   February 12th, 2010 - 8:32 pm

Breibart didn’t make you watch the video, Rexter, and nobody gets to be six forever although we have a political party in this country that has deluded many people like you into “feeling” that you have such a right. Do you “feel” that way about all the porn on the net?

Off Duty   February 12th, 2010 - 8:36 pm

Bad track design.

father_moray   February 12th, 2010 - 8:40 pm

Vancouver killed that boy…so who needs SAFETY and PREVENTION? That competitor did. Pity Vancouver apparently passed the buck on safety and prevention. Great job.

Criminal Negligence

Stopwaste   February 12th, 2010 - 9:05 pm

Condolences to the family. High velocity sports are always in danger, especially if they’re Olympics or professional. Faster speeds means higher risk. Cushions around the pillars won’t help at those speeds. They need to widen the inner curve and put plexi-glass walls in that area. The guy bounced off the inner curve then flew out off the track. I read further details about the accident; other teams except Canada, were allowed to examine the track while it was being prepared for the Olympics. One of the luge athletes complained that they were crash-test dummies for the track.

Robert   February 12th, 2010 - 9:15 pm

We can all thank the supurb engineers.

Grossly Negligent Engineering   February 12th, 2010 - 9:22 pm

They might as well have put a steel beam in the middle of the track. God bless this victim of man’s drive for excitement and excellence meeting grossly negligent engineering.
Shut this track down. And get someone with common sense to inspect the rest of the facilities before anyone else surrenders their life in a game.

So sad. Please remove this video. This is not what any grieving family member or friend needs to see. Have some respect for the young man who tragically lost his life living out his passion. My prayers go out to him. May he be with the Lord in Heaven forever more.

Francine and others – take a screenshot to commemorate the lowpoint at this news blog.

jorge   February 13th, 2010 - 12:34 am

was someone paid to design this death trap.

Gimme a break Terry et. al.   February 13th, 2010 - 12:52 am

Listen folks, it’s an international sporting event broadcast throughout the world, the footage was on CBS, probably on youtube and a million other sites by now, and the last thing his family is doing is surfing the net looking for videos. This is a news site, and this was news today, so get over it already, or take it up with CBS. Folks like Terry glory in the opportunity to criticize Breitbart, but come here every single day to post idiotic comments about zionists and J3ws. You’re “indignation” is so transparent it’s sickening. Grow up already.

checkit   February 13th, 2010 - 12:54 am

wow, that was sad, hope he knew God.

AND WHAT MRON PUTS any type of a solid pole right there? The designers are total morons, at least cushion them to the max.

I think these olympics are the worst to date, as in to many things going bad.

very sad. Fix your relationship with God you never know when that time will come, or if you will have enough time to even blink. Don’t wait get right with God now.

Diamond Jim   February 13th, 2010 - 1:10 am

This is unf@#$!%ing believable! This is the first I’ve seen of the accident. Were they trying to get someone killed? If the socialist Canadians don’t have the dollars to complete the construction of the “Sliding Center”, they shouldn’t be hosting the F-ing Olympics. This luge course is an accident waiting to happen – any idiot would see that.

I’m freaking pissed right now! Idiot Canadians!

Jana   February 13th, 2010 - 1:12 am

The sports announcers commented that this luge track was “the” most dangerous in the world. I have to wonder why they would build one that was so flawed in design? I have to agree with others, that the metal pillars were responsible for that poor young athletes death. Without them, he would have suffered much less serious injures.

kmichaels   February 13th, 2010 - 1:32 am

I hope he was Muslim – those 72 virgins sound great right now.

subjectoftheussa   February 13th, 2010 - 2:28 am

it was a fluke accident in a dangerous sport it wasn’t the track’s fault

Roger   February 13th, 2010 - 3:25 am

I sure hope you dont keep running this video~ Im sure glad there was no video when my dad died, would have been of him puking up blood from a heart anurisem. This sucks that his family has to be reminded with pictures of how thier loved one died…..

Roger   February 13th, 2010 - 3:31 am

If you listened to that poet during the opening ceremonies (that talked about Canada’s invovation and the perfect socialist country). Pretty ironic that they cant get the fourth prop to work.
Irony, tried to pull off the perfect socialist country, while one of the leaders is recovering in an USA hospital from heart surgery.

Xander Crews   February 13th, 2010 - 4:40 am

wow! He hit that pole all like…BOOSH!

myleftbrain   February 13th, 2010 - 6:28 am

From an AP story:

The International Luge Federation and Vancouver Olympic officials said their investigation showed that the crash was the result of human error and that “there was no indication that the accident was caused by deficiencies in the track.”

___________________________

So they decided it was all this guy’s fault. And they’ve decided to make no changes to the track!

Brilliant!

claspur   February 13th, 2010 - 8:05 am

Keep the track, nix the I-beams.

Gimme a break Terry et. al.   February 13th, 2010 - 8:46 am

*sic “your”

Toch   February 13th, 2010 - 9:03 am

Kek, you are right. They didn’t even pad the beams!

Peter   February 13th, 2010 - 1:34 pm

Allright folks- move along- nothing to see here – the “Authorities” have declared that there’s nothing wrong with the track – those posts right alongside the run have nothing to do with it….go about your business…

Kevin   February 13th, 2010 - 3:41 pm

This track is not new. The Canadians practice there all the time, many have hundreds of runs. The American athletes don’t have that many passes up there maybe a 50 run average. There’s not a lot of money in Luge. There’s no big budget to travel to all these tracks. Many times these athletes go a month at a time between practices. This is the first time Nodar Kumaritashvili saw this track. The last Luge fatality was in 1963. This area of the track needs to be widened up and protection for the athletes. Very sad.

Rick   February 13th, 2010 - 10:08 pm

A plexiglass or lexan wall would probaly work. Do it now.

Josh   February 14th, 2010 - 10:42 am

Ouch !

skred   February 14th, 2010 - 4:37 pm

Please don’t pull this video.
It needs to be available so it can be seen how the track was at the time of the accident.
Someone is getting all the video of this pulled from the internet, and with the Olympic Committee in Vancouver saying it was Nodar’s fault and the track was safe.
Please keep it up.

brian   February 16th, 2010 - 10:52 am

Breitbart have more class than nbc/cbs. The media will not show the execution of a death row inmate that deserves to die. Why would we show the last moments of someone’s life that did not? I am appalled by the people in leadership positions that would think that it is appropriate to show another humans death for no other purpose than to appeal to man’s fascination with death and get a few more hits/viewers. Would you want your son, daughter, mother, or father’s last moments to be publicly broadcasted? This is an easy decision. You would not show a dog being slaughtered or killed, why would you show a human?
